$125,000 ANGLE OPEN
Dick Weber Lanes, Florissant, Mo., Feb 6-11, 1984
Burton Angles Record
Nelson Burton Jr. bowled a record-breaking four-game series as he captured the $125,000 Angle Open. The PBA Hall of Famer and ABC-TV's expert commentator qualified fourth for the stepladder finals and averaged 262, totaling 1050 for the afternoon en route to the $20,000 top prize and his 17th PBA championship.
Burton's first victim was Paul Gibson, 278-218. Marshall Holman went down next, 279-217. The tightest match was against Pete Couture who pressured Burton to roll a 10th frame double, which Burton did, to record a 257-249 victory.
Top-seeded Pete Weber could not keep up with Burton's strike blitz, losing 236-184, in the familiar surroundings of Dick Weber Lanes. Burton's series surpassed the previous record of 1021 set by Larry Laub in 1972.

Bo was always my favorite growing up... never missed pro bowlers tour. Those were the greatest bowling days in my opinion...
The late 70s-mid 80s were the best,absolutely
say what you want, but this was one of the greatest telecasts in PBA history!! Bo with kind of a comeback, Pete tournament leader and Dick and Chris in the booth, all taking place in St. Louis hard to wite a script like this!!!
What incredible bowling by Nelson Buron Jr.!! Did you ever see so many pins go off the lane on his strikes? That inside line was amazing. The ball stayed on that line right to the pocket and then..boom.Thanks for the video.
I watched Bo Burton and the PBA tour religiously on Saturday afternoons and still remember this stellar performance. Hard to believe that it would turn out to be his last PBA title.
Yep, Bo's swansong...and in heroic fashion
I miss bowling on abc television . After bowling in the junior leagues in the morning watching pro bowling in the after noon. That was great with those commentator great show .
You, too, huh?!
I used to bowl in the junior league 8th grade through senior year in high school. 1984-1985 season was my best (8th grade). Trophies for
high series: 543
high game: 231
3rd place AND for bowling 231, got my name in the local paper as being the highest of the grade school boys. The gentleman that was the highest for the high school boys that year, bowled a 232, 1 pin more than me. Happened
Feb. 09th, 1985
& was in the following week weekend edition of my hometown paper. Before departing the kiddie league, in addition, in high school, brought home trophies for 1st place, 3rd place and high series: 589.
6 of the 7 trophies 🏆 I have I got in the junior leagues. My last,
1994 - 1995 season:
high game: 254.
Next and last season, although I didn't get a trophy for it, bowled a 652 series:
(223/203/226). The current PBA telecast a little cheesy. The best was Bo & Chris.
Man, does the opening of the show bring back memories! So great. I remember bowling in the junior league on Saturday morning and then watching the tour on ABC that afternoon. 3:30 eastern time start, I believe.
Same, Junior league, fly home watch the show, and head to the pro shop and drill up a ball that the champion rolled.👍
I did the same thing.
Did the exsct same Dan . Loved watching on Saturdays at 230pm. On ABC.. Chris and Bo were the best team ever
With my dad we’d watch every Saturday.
Never miss it
And every Sunday afternoon my parents my sister and I would go to the lanes and bowl
Great memories
Same here. Saturday afternoon with the PBT got ya fired up to go bowling on Sunday. Man, such simple times. Damn. What happened?
My all over all favorite episode of Pro Bowlers Tour
Every teenage bowler who thinks the only way to score big is to hook the hell out of a resin ball from their arsenal of 6-9 they bring to junior league should be made to sit and watch this performance by Bo Burton. One ball, frozen rope, 260+ average.
Amen.
Chris Freemesser well said! Amazing performance from Bo! Beautiful performance! This is what impresses me, not hook!
I want gigantic hook. Bob Handley with resin.
USA Citizen I want a gigantic hook like Robert Smith, “Maximum Bob” had more revs than any of today’s players
Absolutely. I was 13 and in my bowling phase then and if you didn't crank, you were a puss. I thought Bo and Mike Durbin were weak sauce....now at 51 watching these again, that's the shot, man. Right up the pipe, mashing. These dudes with 600 revs, erector set splits, missing 1 pin spares with regularity, fighting over water bottles crinkling....its always cliche to say 'its not like it used to be' ...BUUUUUT thats because usually its true😄....NOW GET OFF MY LAWN.....and settee 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was the best stepladder performance of all time. The record may have been beaten since then but no one has ever crushed the pocket shot after shot for four games like Bo did. I have never seen pins leave the deck like they were doing for Bo that day. It was like a vortex was sucking them off the deck.
Watched the Pro Bowlers Tour with my parents (both Bowlers) from the Billy Welu days. I loved Nelson Burton Jr when he took over. These videos bring back memories. I bowled leagues with my mom and my dad when I grew up.
man used to watch this every weekend then wide world of sports. 84 was my second year of bowling didnt start till l was like 23, i had one of those original hammers. Burton is using. a great ball.
I love at 57:00 where Bo steps away just after he threw it like, “bank”. He knew that struck as he let go. Classic!
Lmao. Yep.....Bo was kickin ass and takin names on this day. Just mashin
What a memory. Watched it between shots during junior traveling league. As awesome as Bo was that day, Couture's 8-pin was crucial.
I remember bowling in several pro ams in my home center in Cranston Rhode Island
And one memory that stands out is my keeping score for Bo as he rolled a 300
I just watched a 21 year old Bo Burton Vs. The Late Great Dick Weber( RIP) from 1966// and this came up [ Wow!!! 18 Years Later, and Bo Looks Jacked👍👍
He was put together.
I absolutely love watching these old matches. I can't get enough!
Also exciting that I've finally decided to pickup a urethane again after almost 20 years
of using strictly reactive resin balls. The Pitch Black will be here in a few days. 😎🎳
I love these old Pro Bowlers Tour shows.
Some of the greatest bowling ever on television. Nelson Burton was a the top of the game; some of his strikes were among the finest and most powerful I have ever seen.
If this doesn't teach you that "straighter is greater" then nothing will.
An unparalleled exhibition of accuracy and power.
This hit is insane! 32:00 Look at those pins dance!
Pipin' it!!
The St Louis Bowling Mafia: Bo, Dick and Pete!
I love watching these old commercials. No Wokeness in them.
NELSON BURTON JR YOU'RE MY FAVORITE PROFESSIONAL BOWLER! CHRIS HOCH
43:50 - Saved By Zero - The Fixx
What bowling by nelson hardly missed the pocket, low count 8 in 4 games no opens, and back in the days before the big reactive balls came along.
Me too...every Saturday..and I mean EVERY Saturday without fail.
ME TOO. I NEVER, EVER MISSED A TELECAST!! The sky could have been falling, I would still have had my eyes glued to the T.V. I taped them all for about 2 years as a junior bowler on my Panasonic tape recorder with blank Certron tapes. Watching my favorites. Burton announcing with expertise and such passion and enthusiasm!! Roth!! Holman!! Guys like Pete Weber, Wayne Webb, Voss, Johnny P., DICK WEBER announcing when BO Burton was bowling, and the classy Anthony. Roth with his look of determination to strike! Then, young bowlers like Norm Duke doing well.
Bo is a great bowler! AND when I get to see the most prideful and short tempered PBA bowlers get defeated it is WONDERFUL!
Haha that dude in Burton's tip was jacked!
Hell, Bo was jacked
Every Saturday afternoon on ABC watched every week.... worst mistake ABC sports every made elimatinating bowling on Saturday... was never the same since then... Beau and Chris were the best
56:54 - talk about clutch. It's not easy for anyone to get up and bowl two strikes in the 10th to win a match. Bo Burton had ice water in his veins.
Bo had been hitting the gym.
In case you dont know that is Randy Cotures father
Pete Couture was (Divorced) my great uncle and this is the first time I've seen him bowl.
When I was younger I could crank with the best of them. Remember the saying "crank you go to the bank, stroke you go broke?" When your body says oh no you don't well let's just say at 72 OUCH! @ I'm watching Bo's style @ studying it. It's made a big difference in my game.
Claude Heffington thank for reactive resin, I used to crank my urethane ball but at age 69 my wrist isn’t as flexible. I tried a purple Hammer this fall and had to sell it, great ball for anyone that still has the touch
Best advice I ever got about bowling balls- "most people buy a ball that hooks to much for house conditions. "
Rest in Peace Pete Couture
the semi final match was exciting and very close
Andrew Phillips
Mark Roth and Earl Anthony have bowled some exciting matches
George N. Pappas and Ernie Schlegel have bowled some awesome matches
@Andrew Phillips TROLL ALERT !!! Andrew Phillips the TROLL of the PBA
At 32:05 montrous strike and pin action
Lol...even Schenkel said it, too. It was like he threw a grenade down there

35:40 -- eric clapton playing over bo burton's tip. :-)
Clearly they messed up that graphic at 29:53, and the funny thing is that Holman actually finished 2nd to LAST in the 1982 Firestone TOC!
Marshall Holman won the Firestone in 1976 and 1986. Prior to the 1986 Firestone, Bo Burton mentioned that Marshall had done practically nothing in the Firestone since his 1976 victory.
4:05 - "Union of the Snake".
Yes. I wanted to hear some eloquent comments from Bo.
Is that Bill Smitrovich, who played Drew Thacher on Life Goes On, in the Scope commercial that starts at 4:46?
Yesh it wuzh.
1:17:28--Could that be a 17-year-old Leanne Barrette in red in the second row, behind and to the left of Couture?
@ 1:53 there's the rest of the final field of 5 bowlers
The Flea Pete Couture !
Wow! Now THIS is a GREAT PBA TELECAST. In my top 5 ever. Just possibly MY FAVORITE EVER. BO BURTON bowling VERY good. Pete Weber leading the tournament in the top position for the title. Dick Weber announcing AND trying not to be too biased for Pete to win. DeeDee Weber was there as was JUANITA WEBER to be with her husband Dick and watch Dick & Juanitas son bowl. "Magnificent Marshall" was bowling competitively. Cissy Burton was there for her emotional support for BO. DICK WEBER ANNOUNCING IN TOP FORM. And. Brian Voss made the top 24 as did Bill Spigner who is Mr. Versatility. WHAT A TELECAST!!!!!!!
Too bad they ended so abruptly, with no presentation ceremony.
I would guess that ABC was in a hurry to get back to the Winter Olympic coverage. CBS had a similar situation after the 1992 Daytona 500. The victory lane celebration wasn’t shown so CBS could resume their Winter Olympic coverage immediately after the race.
Bo Burton won a few matches on tour.
Lots of sub plots to this show. Maybe the best PBA show ever....next to '96 Learn Jrs nuclear devastation show.
Nelson Burton Jr had a record breaking day as he climbed the ladder to win the Angle Open
Andrew Phillips spoiler ASSHOLE
Yeah you really need to get a life. Trolling bowling videos and giving out spoilers. Pathetic dude.
@Andrew Phillips TROLL ALERT !!!! Andrew Phillips the "MC" TROLL of the PBA on You Tube .......
jeez Petey fell apart mentally almost immediately.after 3rd frame the score was tied and he looked like he was gonna cry. good idea by the network to just let him bowl championship game at his house while commercials played lol.
I didn't know Paul Gibson was married to Wynonna Judd.
who misses wood lanes?
Ted Hannahs missed the show by 24 pins.
Sludge I bowled next to Hannahs in the USBC Open, he’s an ass
Thanks for the comment, Douglas. I am always interested in how the professionals conduct themselves.
RIP. PETE.
Steve Jorfi Pete Weber ?
@@douglasharris5216 He was most likely referring to Pete Couture.
@@veggieoilerfan2940 I bowled with Pete Couture in the 1978 Masters
Bo had home lane advantage.
It was also Weber's home turf
Although Pete was bowling out of Jax, Florida, at the time.
