  • Well it finally happened, I got my 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stuck in some snow. Thankfully with X-mode I was able to break it free.

    All season tires are junk, seriously. Your tires are OK, but Blizzaks, or other. A/T tires that are rated for 50,000 miles are more, will get you much more traction... It's amazing what "real" snow, or A/Ts' will do for you....
    Subaru's are amazing... Thanks for your testing!!!

    Thank you for these videos! I'm enjoying watching them! I bought a 2023 limited last spring. Had buyer's remorse after I got home, just because of the amount of money spent after driving a cheap Prius for 7 years.... Thankfully that night we got 9" of snow (we rarely get big snow storms in Minnesota, believe it or not). So the next day, I went out to pick friends up and go to the auto show... Even on stock tires, it did great on unplowed roads! However, I pulled to the side on a residential road while waiting for my friend to come out of the house. I sat for a few minutes and that was enough for the snow under my tires to turn icy. Needed a nudge to get moving again. Now I have snow tires. And wishing for snow! It keeps going south of us... Maybe Feb and March will bring us some snow...

      I read your comment.
      When your factory tires wear out, buy a set of Michelin Cross Climate 2 tires.
      We have them on both our Outback and our Forester.
      We live in a very mountainous area of north central Washington state, 5 miles from town on a private road. We get 5-7 feet of snow every winter.
      We’ve found that the Cross Climate 2 tires are Awesome on dry, wet, slushy, snowy, logging and forest roads. They suck on ice, but you can drive on them year round.
      We had to have Discount Tires order them but they’re worth the wait.
      When they wear out, we’ll definitely buy them again

    Seems like a Subaru Forester Wilderness would be just fine for my needs....right now would be a great time to be able to test one out...roads are clear for the most part now, its the driveway that would be the test as on the exit its a slight incline with some deeper snow from the snow plow.

    The snow looks wet and heavy, it's not a powder you can blow through covering your front hood, Subaru is doing pretty well for the conditions and for the type of car you have on a nice summer day in, feeling confident in corners with decent speed. That's what Subaru's are goo at:)

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  Před 6 měsíci

      Absolutely! A week ago it started out as powder with horrible drifts from the wind, then as it’s warmed up it’s become wet and heavy lol. I’ve taken some Silverados and Mazdas out since making this video and it sure is interesting/fun to see how different AWD/4WD systems and their tires do. Thanks for watching! 🙂

    Cool video! The day I picked up my Crosstrek in SLC a big storm was moving in. The next morning it was a full scale blizzard. I decided to go to McDonalds to get some breakfast and test my CT in the snow. I drove back roads and saw lots of stuck vehicles, including some badass high horsepower expensive vehicles. I was able to putter right along with my humble 152hp CT making it to McDonalds and back with no problem. I don’t even have X mode but I could turn off TC and manipulate the 6 speed gearbox well enough to keep moving. I haven’t encountered snow since that day but I know my CT is capable. I live in a warmer climate currently. What I sacrifice in the cool factor is compensated by extreme practicality. I know I say it all the time but I just love my Crosstrek.

      That’s was an awesome way to break it in! Yeah, in this video X-mode showed me that it’s actually a very good program and made the difference to getting unstuck. I’ve never needed to use it before. I’m sure an experienced driver can get out without the system, but for the regular person it’s nice to feel like you have those assistance programs as progressions to how stuck you are lol.

    Been driving trucks/4Runner for years, but the Subaru OBW is really just drawing me in. Having kids now I want something that can get decent mileage, carry the family with nice amount of space and comfort. While still being able to hit some trials and go to the really far out spots on the beach, and this just looks like it would be perfect for that.

Those ads that all companies have of cars blowing up a mountain pass with no traffic are so unreal. I’m on my 5th Subaru because I drive in the city snow not some fairyland ad.

    Interesting how different snow can be from place to place. I was bombing up steep hills in 10+ inches of snow here in Tennessee in a 2000 Impreza with fifty dollar walmart tires and the only problem I experienced was a big rock buried in the snow that put a hole in my oil pan. I literally couldn't get stuck if I tried. That Wilderness can probably handle 2 feet just fine.

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, I was honestly really surprised that it got stuck like that. But the snow was becoming pretty heavy/wet. This morning I published a Silverado ZR2 on 35” Goodyear Wranglers and even that got stuck in 2wd in similar or less snow haha.

    I found my 2023 picks up loads of snow in the wheel arches and along the sills. I mean serious amounts, so much that it’s rubbing on the tyres.
    If left uncleared overnight, it freezes solid and I can’t use the thing. My 2019 was no where near as bad.

      Haha 😅 I have no problem demonstrating in my own vehicle if it will be helpful for others and my own learning experience. But I wouldn’t intentionally get a dealer or some else’s vehicle stuck if I don’t know for sure it has the capability to get unstuck. Like a Silverado ZR2 I just tested. I got it stuck in 2WD knowing with 4WD and front and rear lockers it could easily get out when needed. 😁

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  Před 5 měsíci

      That’s a good idea! I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂 If you haven’t already done this you need to edit and make your own preset that includes the defrosters and circulating airflow. And then every time you want that specific setting to help blow on the windows and melt faster click on that specific preset. It’s definitely not a perfect system. And I also have difficulty with it at times. Best of luck!

    Bud love your channel and your videos but you have to put this in manual mode! Put the shifter in manual, just stay in first gear and then pick x-mode! This way you are not going 40 miles an hour and sifting to higher gears you are staying in a low gear and you can let x-mode do ti's thing.

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208

      @johnkkkj Před 11 dny

      @@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Now we are both dying for snow in the middle of July! 😄
      Honestly before you try it in the snow try a bit on dirt to see what I mean. Those paddle shifters will hold the gear in place as long as the drive mode is in the manual gate and not regular drive. And there is no bleeping to the higher gear, you can redline it! So now it is possible to hold your foot down let x-mode do it's thing without going 40mph or overheating. Besides you have tonnes of torque on the low end that's what you want!
      This might even prevent high centering as you will not dig a pit for the tires.

    Was the non-wilderson Forrester able to get out of this type of snow?

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  Před 6 měsíci +1

      That video wasn’t quite like this one trying to get stuck. It was more about seeing how the model/tires compare to the other vehicles I tested. They basically all did the same drive.
      In this video the Forester probably would have done nearly the exact same if tested in the same lines. I don’t think the extra power from the turbo helps because with traction off you can spin any of the Subaru wheels fast. All the Subarus I’ve driven in the snow have done a great job, but the tires do make a difference. And I think mine having 34k miles is slowly starting to show with its traction lol.

    • @arndtbc
      @arndtbc Před 6 měsíci

      My 23' Touring came with the Falken Ziex tires. I really haven't heard much about them when they where down a bit I'm going to change them out to something else, maybe the Michelin Crossclimate 2. Maybe you could do a video on your experience with different tires tire options? Thanks again, great videos!@@AutomotiveAnonymous208

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  Před 6 měsíci

      I had actually meant to do that and realized it was a Limited XT I had the key for and not a regular Limited. I’m unsure that the turbo actually makes much of a difference, I wouldn’t think so compared to the tires on the vehicles. The snow is starting to melt, so if we can get more snow in the next month I’ll try to make more of these videos and include a non turbo! 🙂

    • @Wrang15
      @Wrang15 Před 6 měsíci

      It's more about tires. I have a limited 2.5 on oem tires it gets around. My touring xt has snow rated tires and tends to over power them in brake traction. But in the Subaru manual they recommend starting in 2nd. I live on dirt roads that they don't salt never been stuck. I never use x mode with the after market tires. Snow mobiles run around too and pack things to ice.

    Meh, I’m on my 8th Subaru. Manual transmission would be so much better than the CVT.
    I don’t like the CVT. Too much tire spin. With a manual transmission you would get out of the deep, wet snow, without much tire spin.
    IMO, the best Subaru I’ve had, in the snow was my 95’ Legacy Turbo 5 speed.
    I have a 23’ Outback XT limited, so far we haven’t had much snow. I’m waiting for a good snow.
    The gas mileage is abysmal. 14 to 16 gallons, around town. Haven’t had a chance for long highway driving.

    • @johnkkkj
      @johnkkkj Před 12 dny

      The problem is most people just don't understand how to put the damn car in manual mode and keep it in the first gear. Then go and select X mode! don't just stand there spinning wheels in total automatic, there is a manual m ode on the car but no one is using it. Same as stick! It will hold the gear you select without shifting! Best of all worlds, X-mode on first gear!
