The Google Pixel is one of the most value-packed smartphones on the market. In fact, Google is likely selling the Pixel for no profit or even a slightly negative margin. But, despite how value-packed the Google Pixel is, no one seems to want it. The Google Pixel doesn’t even control 1% market share globally and one of the main reasons for this is that customers don’t always truly want what they say they want. For example, customers say that they want a cheap reliable smartphone but what they end up buying is an iPhone. This doesn’t just apply to smartphones either. Consumers in all sorts of industries end up buying something that they don’t necessarily say they want. Another perfect example of this is when Payless ShoeSource rebranded their stores with high-end branding and pricing which people were much more receptive to. This video explains the pitfalls of giving customers what they ask for and why that usually doesn’t play out as well as you might expect.

Their price in Europe at least are absolutely competitive. The performance are similar to top tier Samsung and Apple smartphone and they sell for like 60% of the price.

I agree. He seems to miss the point on some things and gloss over others. If you just look at global market share, then Apple isn’t too big. According to Oberlo, as of November 2023, Apple has a 29.64% market share in the smartphone market worldwide. This means that almost three in 10 smartphone users worldwide use an Apple phone. From what I know, Apple is popular in the USA, but I don’t know what other markets Apple dominates in.
Google has had different manufacturers make their phones over the years, including LG, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Foxconn. However, this inconsistency in manufacturers does not necessarily mirror the inconsistency of the quality of Google-branded phones. From my own experience, Google, aside from their camera, didn’t seem to provide a better experience or features compared to something like Samsung.
When Google Nexus first came onto the scene, people were used to buying phones that were subsidized by carriers. It was a big jump from paying close to nothing compared to the starting price of $529. I think back then, subsidized phones with a plan came to around $50 a month. Today if people go with a big carrier they end up paying the same excluding the cost of a phone.
Samsung, a Korean company, owns the US (outside of Apple). Google is made by Americans and they aren't buying it
the only reason I have reservations about the Pixel is cause Samsung's not quite there yet compared to Qualcomm, otherwise it'd be the auto-buy brand that the Notes were back in the N9 days
Also the Pixel is not available worldwide - for example Google doesn't sell phones here in Indonesia

The thing is, apple and Samsung are so well established when someone says they have an android, most people first thought ironically would be Samsung rather than Google. Not that being established is a guarantee, just look at HTC, Nokia and blackberry
I actually don't think this is the issue. All-in-all smartphones are really not that expensive, at the very least we should see more rich people adopting it. But Pixels have software support that is delayed by chariers, hardware quality problems, software lifespan problems etc.etc.
Nah, most people go for asian brands, like Xiaomi, because they have very low prices, and people don't care about quality, just high numbers. Asian brands come up with the eye catching innovations, but they are never as well implemented, as on a Samsung phone though.
One thing about Pixel advertising (would also apply to almost the entire android smartphone ecosystem) is that whenever Google gets celebrities to endorse it, it seems forced advertising in a way as vast majority of them use iPhones. In some instances, celebrities were tweeting the Pixel ads while in the tweet the following quote came up "Tweeted from an iPhone"
Google absolutely does not listen to their user base for what they want... They requested headphone jacks as microSD storage expansion, larger storage on the base models, more storage on high-end models, fingerprint sensors being moved to the back. All of those hardware decisions that they could differentiate themselves with, they ignore and they push their software. And even then Google will give you awesome software like voice commands that work when your phone is locked and then take it away from you

It's also important to note that Pixel phones are only *officially* available in 21 countries, almost all of them are developed with high-income and already sizeable iPhone market share. Pixels do not make much sense there, with high prices (except in the US), not many highlight features, and small to no brand recognition. If only Google also made the Pixel phones officially available in more countries, including developing countries such as India, Egypt, and Indonesia, I think they would be successful.

I feel like a big issue with Google as well is that they limit their actual market potential too much.
That is to say, they don't actually sell their phones in that many markets. Doing this just inevitably leads to less global market share.
Thank god cause their phone absolutely suck, pixel 7 pro was the worst flagship I ever had.
terrible performance, poor battery life, it overheating all the time, camera glass can crack from heat lol its build quality is worse, and mine actually died from water damage after being dropped into the water for half second, the phone was looking like brand new, no scratches chips, glass cracks etc..

You stated the reason for them not being popular outside of the US market right out in the first minute. They're not priced competitively for most of the big markets outside of the US. Their appeal in big markets such as India and China is simply being a premium product from a reputable company, but then Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo/Oneplus/Realme gives a more premium option with better specs often at the same, or in the case of Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo/Oneplus/Realme, with better prices.
Most consumers buy a Samsung phone because they walk into a carrier store or a Best Buy and they sign up there. Which includes a payment plan broken over a period of years for the phone. Most people don't buy their phones out right.
It would help if Google put much much more time and effort into the Tensor chip, to help performance and overheating.
If they could do that while offering what they already do, they'd easily be the best, considering how customizable and easy Pixels are to use.
don't think that will convince any iphone user or aspiring iphone user to give up Apple. Apple is almost always 2nd best when it comes to hardware, with the exception of SOC, but people never believe this due to their aggressive marketing and, as the video tells us, the appearance of status when you're an iphone user - "iphone is best", "Apple invented smartphones", " Apple invented tablets", etc - all of these are either purely false, or just wishful thinking.

But Pixels with something like GrapheneOS are the most secure and easy to use, no matter how you look at it. It's kind of crazy knowing how little they are used.
Either they need to fix Tensor or go back to SnapDragon. overall, my Pixel doesn't get too hot. Even Snapdragonn CPUs can get toasty. Also the 5G modem on Pixel is still lacking.
I had a 4a and now using a 6a, I think battery is my biggest gripe but otherwise I really like them. Great value
I only really felt my Pixel 8 pro get really warm when I first had it.
After a little while, it stopped getting warm and it doesn't do that to me anymore. To be fair though, I run Graphene Os on it and they might've fixed it on their end, so I can't say for regular Android that comes with the Pixel.
Biggest mistake Google did was ignoring the huge Midrange segment, a phone for USD 200-300 would have been a great hit in the emerging countries especially Asia, South America and Africa where the premium phones are highly unaffordable for the majority of the population. Good and affordable Midrange phones will be a great sales booster for any mobile manufacturer.😎😎😎
In my country more than half of the phones are android, but GOOGLE REFUSE TO SELL THEM HERE, and we are 19 million people in this country, and we are not poor at all, most people have flagships.

That's what I got, noice. the FUTO app does AI voice transcription and since the phone has those tenser cores i guess it runs a lot faster, even their "slow but accurate" model runs fine. nvm it is the pixel 7

The problem with the pixel is that it's not exceptional in any category but the camera (and even there it's debatable due to the quality being from post-processing). The pixel is a great phone but the average person has barely heard of it, nobody looks for the #2 way to lose weight.
It's not a uniquely Google problem, brands like Nokia also flopped due to not having a flagship to make the lineup desireable.
Your point on "aspirational" is correct, but it's not because customers don't know what they want. Rather it's because the priority is to be closest to what they perceive to be "the best" even if wrong. That's why customers would rather buy the mid-ranged version of a samsung or apple than a much better pixel or a xiaomi.
But the bigger hurdle is whether or not they've even heard of xiaomi or pixel before. Most consumers aren't into phones the way we are and only have a vague idea of what brands exist on the market.
I'm from the USA, Xiaomi doesn't seem to be available at the local stores or cell phone service providers. Unless you are a tech enthusiast then you know where to search and find them. As for smartphone tech, it has gotten so good most people don't need or want to pay for the top tier smartphone. I am not sure if problems in the past have plagued Pixel/Google phones in the past. Over the years Google had many issues with their smartphones from the past: overheating, bluetooth problems, camera issues, software bugs,screen coloration, ect. Google has had different manufacturers make their phones over the years, including LG, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Foxconn. However, this inconsistency in manufacturers mirrors the inconsistency of the quality of Google-branded phones. From my own experience, Google, aside from their camera, didn’t seem to provide a better experience or features compared to something like Samsung. Then again I'm a tech and keep track of tech and what reviewers say.
@@tamwilfred True,.. Also they need to have a strong USP apart from the camera.. The average person likes a great camera , but they also need a great battery/very good software. Not everybody likes just stock software and then having to download bunch of apps to do stuff which other OEMs provide out of the box.
If google just concentrates on software customization and better battery , they'll surely capture better market share.
Battery and heating issues, due to substandard Samsung foundries fabrication when compared to competition.
Meanwhile, I've been a Pixel owner since the 4 but skipped to the 8. The camera on a $600 Pixel battles out with $1000 Samsung and Apple. It's not the fastest, but its fast enough for my needs at almost half the price. Also the Pixel 8 isn't huge. It's small like the Pixel 4. A selling point.

They're cheap in the US, with all the perks and features yet no one wants it because it's not apple.
In the other 16 countries where it's available (small indie compagny new to selling phones) the prices are pretty high and absolutely not competitive, and there is so many features missing.

And 5G and VoLTE is also not available in regions Google doesn't sell it officially. Here in Maldives, Pixels are the only ones that don't have that support since Google blocks it in software for our carriers

1. They are not available in stores like iPhones.
2. They dont have the 512GB option on all colours
3. The (majority) features are only available in the USA( where Apple dominates)
4. Internet modems on Pixels are iffy(they are inconsistent, like when you are on an ISP that loads youtube faster than the app launches and an ISP that take 50ms extra after the app loads) in Europe.
5. Fast charging is locked to their specific chargers.
6. They have poor software support.
7. Software updates are sent to carriers and not directly to phones.
8. Until 2023 they had industries shortest software lifecycle support

Tried the Pixel and iPhone side by side and returned the Pixel. The hardware wasn't worth the price despite good software. Iphone did the core stuff better - battery life, app quality, cell quality, overall camera quality. Plus the accessory market is huge.

Google Pixel is basically the iPhone of Android. Mostly focused on minimal design and excellent software. But there's a reason Android users use an Android, and that's because it has better hardware and value. Pixel hardware is fairly basic and not best value whatsoever. Google is not really good when it comes to selling hardware.
Crapple phones accessories aren't even that great. Talk about garbage quality over quantity.

The main reason why Pixels are not selling in the market is because of their Tensor chip which is still generation behind the competition. Samsung learned their lesson and brought snapdragon chips in their S23 series.

Samsung and Apple are the ones that come to mind right now. OnePlus is closing the gap too but Google is way behind. They have cancelled too many products to be taken seriously by customer
The biggest reason I didn't get the 7a is the slow charging (maxes out at 18w, no support for Quick Charge, only USB-PD, which AFAIK means it only reaches 18W on USB-C)
Dunno, even the P4 had quick charge. Its a bit slower than Samsung, but I use wireless charging and when I wake up, my phone is 100%. I have the P8, 55% battery left in 16hrs of being awake. It does my needs.
Many pixel features advertised are not available in Singapore. Like the call waiting or assistant answer features.
This is ridiculous because Google's regional HQ is here in Singapore. This is on top of neglecting the flagship price tag on it.

The problem is the branding of the company. People like the iPhone because it's apple not because it's the "best" phones. People in general don't trust Google therefore don't trust the phone.
I think Pixels are really good for price you get. And I like the stock android.
Chief problem with Pixel is that I don't see them in all the stores like other brands. And if it is there, it's not as prominent.
Pixel is not "stock Android", it's using Pixel UI which is only available with Google's Pixel. There's tons of Google apps and software, more than stock Android or even other brands like Sony or LG.

In Greece we have a saying: all about looks, everybody buys an iphone, because they want to look cool and it is easier to fit in.
With Pixel's current problems it certainly isn't the brightest buy either. It legit has only 2 hour SoT.

On the iPhone who has major heating issues, for example the iPhone 15 gets way too hot when u r using the phone while it's charging, the phone is lagging, do u know how dangerous it is for a smartphone to get these high temperatures? The motherboard can get damaged and then the phone is useless, u need a new phone. In smartphones the heat cannot escape and u can't cool a smartphone off, because there is no space to put a cooler on like a PC. When I pay 1000€ (in Greece all the phones are more expensive, because of the taxes) for a phone, I expect everything from it, no lag, no issues with the heat, no battery issues, nothing, but the reality is different.
I would buy an Android if they gave iOS like experience. Meaning simple, easy, fast, no bs, no bloatware, no spyware

I switched from my Pixel 7 Pro to the iPhone 15 Pro Max and now, two months later, I miss my Pixel. I don’t know what everyone else see because the OS on the Pixel is so much better. Simple things like editing text or going back to the previous screen are simply better but I did try to like this iPhone. I will be selling it tho lol
Opposite situation for me. Went from a Galaxy S10+ to an iPhone 12 regular and never looked back. Later on I tried out an S22 Ultra and although it was an amazing experience i never managed to get that same spark I did with iPhone. I sold it and kept my 13 Pro Max. Currently using the 15 Pro Max and so far it’s been great. What consumers really want boils down to what their phone experience is like mixed with what they usually want in a phone that fits their usage style/what they’ve adapted to. Power word being preference. Although there have been times where I do miss having an Android.

What, are you going to say that because it’s iPhone that it’s crap, when so many Android skins/OEM launchers have used or taken inspiration from the iOS and its aesthetic? Performance tests show that the hardware on the iPhone have also lived up to its name.
Simple reason, they don't intend to compete with sales nor focus on the revenue they just want to promote the best features of Android, so people can make the realization that an Android phone is better than Iphone. So, even if people dont necessarily buy the Pixel, they're satisfied enough if people buy an Android device. They profit massively from bringing people inside the Android/Google ecosystem.

Just imagine Google actually taking seriously the Pixel line Up worldwide, India and latin america are such a big market for Google and they doesn't sell their phones there, I'm from Mexico and I love having a Pixel, such a feature pack phone and a great alternative to those Xiaomi things, but I had to buy it over a third party on Amazon.

Google sells their phones in India. The issue has been mostly with their service network in india.

In the US, iPhone dominates for many reasons, a common one is iMessage along with the ecosystem locking people in, leading to peer pressure
In other regions, it’s brand loyalty (imo)
All this to say, there are many reasons, and the ones you mention are definitely part of the conversation, but I think a lot is missing

One thing to add, I think giving people “what they want” is really a vocal minority
The general public doesn’t care about the specs, they just want a phone that works, at least from my experience working in the telecom industry for the last decade
I am currently using the pixel 8 pro and loving it. I've never had a pixel until literally now. I've had the iPhone until after the 6 (I had a 6 not plus) and loved it. Most recently I was all about OnePlus phones. I started with the 5T, then the 6T then 7 Pro then 9 pro and that's what I just switched from. The battery life of my pixel is amazing, literally all day battery at least. I will say performance is lacking even compared to my older OnePlus 9 pro but it's still pretty good for regular stuff. But OMG the cameras! The photos are super awesome and true to life colors and sharpness! I can also do soooo much with the AI and editing before and after I take photos or videos. I'm now a pixel fan and will stick with it for the foreseeable future!
Same here. I'm from the Philippines, google pixel phones aren't available in my country so the only way to snag one is to buy outside of the country or in the grey market. manage to find one(6a) and will never return to any android/ios phone(previous phones are xiaomi poco f2 pro and iPhone Xs). the features exclusive to stock android from google itself is phenomenal! it may not have the fastest chip nor have the infamous fruit logo for the status symbol but wow so wow! just buy one and then try it for a week or so, then tell me if it's not good. 99% of the time you'll be surprised, it may be the only phone you never knew you need.
I have a pixel and love it, I think the problem is that it's not an everyday name, like Samsung and iPhone

Yeah it's seen as a software company, with stuff like it's search engine, CZcams, Gmail, Android etc. If they market the pixel more then people would actually buy it because most people don't know a Google Pixel is an option when buying a phone
@@LogicallyAnswered Google was never known to be a phone manufacturer. It was just the brand behind the software. Apple shows how important the combined hardware and software experience needs to be for the user.
they make it so hard to get your hands on one, so of course the market share is low. Google as stated has more money than all its competitors, so they really don’t care on how well the Pixel line does. I believe it’s just there to show other vendors what they expect in how they use Android.
I have to disagree. I believe the two main reasons are availability and price. Outside US Pixel Phones are hard to find and insanely expensive. There's really no advantage in buy one of these outside US.
The funny thing is if you want a product to be successful never really prioritize the rational customers because they'll tell everything they want but in practice they're a tiny slice of your customer base. The overwhelming majority of people don't decide upon these things rationally but according to how they feel about it. The iPhone appeals to how a person feel to the point where we spend irrational amounts of money on it. People don't really buy the thing but the idea behind the thing. While google is saying all the right stuff unfortunately it won't "turn anyone on" just like a good guy on paper yet the ladies flock to the "misguided" fella lmao
I actually ended up buying a "high-end" gaming laptop from costco because I wanted a new laptop and my dad (the costco membership holder) informed me about a sale they were having. Still got a regular iphone instead of a pro series though
That's the best combo. Better to buy a beefed up gaming pc than an expensive phone unless you really like mobile games.
Hi Hari. I felt this was one of your weeker videos. The take was naive. And I am saying this as an Android guy. There are good reasons for why Pixel's market share is lacking.
Also blaming customers is never a good look, it brings one's intellect into question if not the motive.
None knows the pixel, that's why they don't buy it. I have a pixel 6a and none knows what a pixel actualy is, they think it is a chinese smartphone and not Google's phone.
Every time a family member asks me what phone they should buy I tell them to get a pixel, they say they've never heard of it but then buy one anyway. Every single time they've loved it. Google just needs better marketing.
Edit: Also they need to enable features like "now playing" by default. They have all these great unique features that most pixel owners don't know about because the average person doesn't look at reviews for their phone or explore the settings menu.

As much I hate apple, they are right. Since I go Bluetooth, I never go back but of course it is my personal preference

- Pixel's performance is similar to or even less than many phones in the same or less price range, Ex. iQoo Neo 7, Poco F5, etc. Even though Pixel has a Tensor chip, it is just a rebrand of Samsung's Exynos, Yeah there are some differences between them, but according to me, these differences are one of the downsides.
- Pixel's Network Performance is abysmal, at least in India. Random drops in network connectivity even in areas supporting 5G. For many $200 smartphones from Poco, Xiaomi has better network performance than Pixel.
- Pixel's camera is pretty cool but causes severe heating issues, usually due to its Tensor chip.
- Pixel's battery is pretty bad, smaller capacity combined with power-hungry chip.
I think Google is trying to solve many problems at the same time so that they have differentiating factor compared to other phones, but I think they have only cracked the camera problem.
While pixels try to give everything, their core functions have pretty serious problems jus like how pixel 6&7 had network issue

My current Pixel 4a did not last a year without its problems rising.
1. Constant overheating - when full brightness or full volume on speakers.
2. The battery that lasts less than 2 hours on single charge if using LTE + videocall, light gaming, or camera in general.
3. Plus Google bloatware that wants to know everything about you - all the time, which becomes annoying at certain point.
current is an exaggeration when it's been out of support for more than a year now. It might also be the worn out battery, as the Pixel 4a hasn't been produced for years.

The problem is all companies are getting greedy: no headphone jack, no micro SD, and no charger in the box, they are all doing collectively and profiting from it. So by not listening to customers, yes you're right they do make more money but people are not very happy and will try to find alternatives when available. Google market share only increased bc LG and Huawei left the US market, so it's artificial growth.
Am Currently using Pixel 8 pro and am very satisfied with this phone . Google themselves to blame for not getting more market share because they don't sell in many countries. Have to buy parallel imported Japanese version here in New Zealand

Except you know, the Pixel is not really that competitive when compared to the top dogs when it comes to performance? The main thing is supposed to be the ai enchanced pictures that look great but the rest of the phone falls short. It excels at nothing but the picture taking aspect. It still has average performance, average battery life, okay screen. Noone asked for what the Pixel excels at because that niche is already filled by iPhones and cameras.

You forgot that the price is very good for what you’re getting. No one needs the “performance” flagship Apple or android phone give. Most people just buy it for the brand.
I agree with suspecm6316. No one asked for a phone with more AI features. I want my phone to be effortless to use and reliable. It should feel natural. iPhones do feel that way, and OnePlus’s and Samsung’s too. Pixels have always been awkward since pixel 6. Techies love them but they are a pain to use everyday. So no Pixel is not a good phone, they don’t really know what actual users want . Reviewers and techies who love such phones are a vocal minority that don’t really cause a phone to excel or fail.
@@LogicallyAnswered That's the thing. It's not a solid phone. A solid phone is iPhone (as much as I despise their anti-everything that's not just blindly consume product stance). There really isn't a "solid phone for cheap". I know because I tried hard to look for one. I had to take some compromise and prioritise one feature over others and bought a motorola because of their excelent battery saver features built into android, but it's below average in everything else.
Buying smartphones really is as simple as, you want a solid phone with no compromises? Tough luck, the closest we have is iPhone but you have to deal with Apple bs. You MUST prioritise a single feature and buy a phone that does it best. Or go with the flow and buy a samsung, xiaomi or huawei I guess.

I used the Pixel since it was first released. Had to change back to iphone last year but I REALLY miss my pixel and will def go back for my next phone. I also advise everyone I know to get a pixel and they're great value and great phones.
I really love pixel phones. They have incredible cameras, the best feeling of android, good IA functions, but I think pixels don’t age good, and they also are not power machines, tensor processors are just not so good (I had the g2)

Just feels like Google is chasing Apple fans, but it seems like other Android OEMs are as well. I had a Pixel 6, but moved to an Xperia 5 IV (Japanese version) because I just wanted a damn SD card slot. Both phones only have 128GB, but for $35, I was able to add 512GB to that for my new phone. Maybe I'm not the average purchaser, but that's why I dumped my Pixel and I wasn't interested in the Pixel 7 or 8.
It's sad the Pixel isn't sold worldwide. Having the ability to have GrapheneOS is a gamechanger in the fight for privacy and security.
Graphene Os is pretty underrated tbh, although I can see why most Pixel users probably don't wanna switch.
It is quite a bit of work to get all the data transferred over, and getting everything up and running at first.
Sandboxed Play Services definitely is one of my favorite parts about it tho.

They don't have 5G and HD voice in basically most of the world. Google just blocks it in software in unsupported regions. The pixels are not that good in terms of performance when compared to others and the price increases significantly in most of the world.

No expandable storage, no headphone jack, no removable battery, emphasis on the camera and the weird lump for said camera when smart phone cameras have been plenty good for years. Each successive model gets more and more expensive. The pixel really isn't anything I want at all. I used and mostly enjoyed the first generation pixel despite major issues with the amount of storage available and since then it has just dropped features, gotten more expensive and they also reneged on their promises of free cloud storage (which was their stated reason for limiting the storage options) and even revoked the free storage you got from owning a pixel. These things are just a bad experience and if they can't figure that out, they can't be helped.
Edit: forgot the stupid hole on the front screen, not buying a phone that has a hole in the screen either.
I hate the front cameras as well which is why i still use oneplus 7T Pro 6.7inchs of all oled screen
The thing with Pixels is that they don't age very well and lose performance very quickly compared to other android phones. That may be a reason why people aren't buying them.

The main reason they don't sell well is because you don't have to buy them if you want to be in the Android ecosystem. If you want to be in the iOS ecosystem, you have to buy an iPhone. Google has never truly supported the pixel with all of its might and power
They are also harder to find in my experience. Id have to import one, and why bother when I can get a samsung or oneplus with a warranty for less money

Normally due to the tropical weather here, battery life is always slightly less than what is projected.

2. Now we need a phone that can take atleast 300 photos which means the phone has to survive atleast 3-4 hrs with the camera app. Thats not even possible
3. At the end of the day I want my phone to stay alive to be able to pick calls. Coz that's what phones are primarily there for

As someone who dabbled in game development, when we do playtesting, we're discouraged to ask for feedback and instead rely on facial cues, body posture, and actual gameplay decisions rather than words. Video games are very much a in-the-moment activity, and when people are asked their opinion, not only does it take them out of the moment, but then they have to convey their experiences into words, which itself is quite difficult, as we all experience things and speak differently.
I don't think it's correct to say consumers don't know what they want. They know what they want, it's just difficult to communicate, as is all communication.

The problem with the Pixel is that the camera is only good for basic point-and-shoot. For someone who wants manual camera settings a Samsung Galaxy S Ultra series is better.
they have a "pro camera" mode now, at least on the 8 pro. I don't know about the other models. I heard they were differentiating 8 and 8pro even at software level, but I think that's a very wrong approach from Google. There is already a HW difference, no need to make it a lesser choice, but probably they hope they will sell more pros based on that...

You make some good points about why the iPhone sells so well, but they don't really apply to the Pixel. The reasons Pixels have so little market share right now are...
a) They aren't sold in most countries
b) In the few countries they are sold in outside of the US, they are more expensive and lack some of the software features
c) They're new! I know Google just released the Pixel 8, but in hindsight their first real iPhone competitor was the Pixel 6, and even that one was a buggy first-gen product. So, considering that the first actually good reliable iPhone competitor from Google (aka the Pixel 7) was only released a just over year ago, and they've already seen increased market share, it's a little too early to make any conclusions.
I'm a proud owner of a Pixel i payed 300 bucks for. I spend about 30 minutes a day on it my phone, so there was really no way i would pay much more for a phone for the price of a high end GPU.

Everyone is listing very important things but are missing two key points.
1. During the Tech boom of early 2000’s Apple was able to position themselves as the “cool/artsy alternative” to A traditional PC
2. At the same time, Apple positioned themselves as a premium brand in comparison to other tech brands with their use of minimalism.. in stark contrast to the marketing of the late 90’s and early 00’s
3. Once the first two was completed. Apple then positioned itself culturally. In a very similar way to Starbucks, Target, and Chick-Fil-A. A feeling of upper middle class minimalist suburban culture

I am a pixel user outside of the supported countries, and all their call features, like call screening, hold for me and direct my call aren't available. 5G, despite hardware being existed doesn't work. I have solved the above issues by simply rooting, but the market share is definitely increasing, the pixel users used to be like very rare, but the number of pixel users i've seen past month has been insane, despite google not even officially selling the phone in my country.
Also pixels were always really good, but they started featuring a really good screen and the size only since pixel 6 (which most people actually cared about). So i am actually gonna bet on this getting more and more customers. When i walk, there have been so many people asking me what phone it is, so the phones are eye catching for sure. Google is making the mistake of concentrating its customer base in USA, because america has this weird problem with imessage and most people don't even consider other phone brands, whereas thats not an issue outside america, hence people are more neutral with their choice of phone and think a bit more objectively.

I don't agree with the statement of the video, Google Phones stopped giving customers what they wanted since Pixel 2 XL. Nowadays they don't even include a fingerprint scanner in the back, no headphone jack, no UNLIMITED GOOGLE PHOTOS back up space, etc. What is the point of getting a google pixel nowadays if you don't get the cool pixel benefits? Google ads aren't nothing compared with the savage ads mocking the iPhone back at google pixel 1 in 2016 and google pixel 2. Those were real ADS that made me try pixels.
Also the new huge belt desing sucks compared with the panda design from Pixel 1 & 2 XL. Nowadays the most expensive Google Pixel on the market always gets a cheap on-screen fingerprint scanner, not unlimited google photos quality, no headhphone jack, not a great speaker, etc. Pixel were good until Pixel 5A 5G, from that point they're going down.
This is US-only based analysis. Very poor. Most of the world buys smartphones for cash without contracts. Chinese brands are insanely popular outside US. Pixels are simply diffucult to find outside US. They are sold with high mark up and with no warranty, but many people still want them.

Sony's flagship phones have all of that. I have a 512 GB SD card full of music in mine and listen to it through the 3.5mm jack all the time.

Google doesn't sell well, because you can get a phone 2 to 4 times cheaper, which is still of good quality and will do at least 80% of what the Google phone does. So, why spend more?
I myself was about to get Pixel, until I manually checked sample photos and seen so many defects in those, that I wonder who ever said Pixels have great cameras?
I ended up buying OnePlus and I'm very happy about it. No regrets.

You are wrong, pixel market share is low because it is over priced and does not offer the premium product that an s23 ultra and an iphine 15 pro offers. It's more of a niche gadget with interesting AI features but does not excel in anything over competitors, not in gaming, performance, premium quality, price performance ratio, or even camera performance. As is, it does not compete with Samsung and Apple in the premium category, it does not compete with Chinese phones in the price performance category, it simply does not compete.

S10e is a great phone. I regret switching to the S21FE. S10e was great and honestly S21FE was slow until Android 14. S10e is so well optomized software wise!

I can speak as a Pixel owner, Pixel is far, faaaar from a perfect phone. Actually I wouldn't recommend it to people who are not photography enthusiasts.

Again, if camera is important to you, go for it, but otherwise, pick something different.
It's more like people don't know what is possible. No conscious consumer can or will just buy random things like some tech enthusiast, especially if they have been burned before. Phrasing it as not knowing what they want, is kinda weird.
People know what they want, which is first and foremost, ease of use, then good value (they dont know how much an SOC costs so they just go by something that is expensive), and long term support, and thats what market research shows if you analyse it properly and not just look at what item they buy. It cannot provide data about a possible new thing because it doesn't exist yet.
It's these things that made iphone popular and the "genius" of Jobs. He simply demonstrated it with a whole event instead of a random ad on whatever most popular media outlet.
The whole status symbol aspect is a by product of the price. If the phone/Ui was bad, or iphones were cheap, nobody would use it or acquire it as status symbol.

I have a pixel and i love it. I think that pixels are popular among the android dev community more than anything. Theres no mistake that people who need an easily unlocked phone will buy a pixel. Its a very niche market indeed.
