    I used to do (mostly) refills in my younger days. I didn't know that the material still existed to do it yourself. Thank you for that. And in case there was any doubt, it is ABSOLUTELY a conspiracy to rip you off with a whole new wiper! LOL

      You have to hunt down the blade material, it’s hard to find, but it’s out there.

    You know this video is actually really cool and very insightful. I never thought they could be taken apart like that I always just thought they were glued or got molded around it or something.

      Thanks! Doing this used to be commonplace, now we just rip the whole thing off and replace it. Makes no sense.

    Dead right, I used to get them for Aud 2 from kmart but those days were long gone.
    I had to pay $ 50 per pair from Auto spares and I was fuming... Today I finally get them from Ebay for $15 for 5 pairs.

    Those silicone refills on Ebay (from China) are excellent. I still waiting for them to crack after two and half years.

    Wow now a video. This is great. I’ve been doing this for about five years. I get the cheap Chinese ones. Takes a few weeks to get them in the mail. But that’s ok. Get the silicone ones!!! After watching your video I may just order a few sets to have in the garage.

    So my car is a 2019 Ford Escape Titanium. Wiper looks much different. But there is a cover on either end and supposedly if I can get that cover off, I can replace just the inserts, found on EBay. Do you have a video to show this?

    This video needs more attention lol the conspiracy is real! Feels like they stopped selling the blade refills so that those who dont know any better just go the easy route and spend too much for new wipers..

    Definitely a conspiracy because the refill kit linked above is now "currently unavailable - We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock." (I found another tho.)

    Replaced with refills. Wiper skiped before and after. Tried bending the wiper arm. NG. Found that there are different size inserts. Never rains here anyway!!

    Mercedes-Benz E350 (2016) uses beam blades on P&H arms. These are impossible to find with refillable options.

    • @WoodgemanX
      @WoodgemanX Před měsícem

      I have a pair of those beam type wipers, on mine there is a small keyway in the channel where the rubber blade sits at both ends, about a 1/4" from the edge. Pull the end of the rubber away from the tip of the blade towards the keyway. The end of the blade will pop out, and pull the rubber out of the channel, spray some silicone lubricant in the seam of the channel to make it easier. Make sure the new rubber has the same side profile and squirt some silicone into the channel and slide the new rubber in.

      Don’t know, check your blades and see if the rubber material is removable.

  • @WoodgemanX
    @WoodgemanX Před měsícem +1

    No doubt it's a conspiracy. The rubber used to last years in the past. Now they recommend you replace your wipers every six months, even the least expensive wiper arms will set you back $38 each year. The pricier wiper blades don't last as long as they claim. The writng on the package of the $20 blade states last 2X longer. Twice as long as what? The chespest blade at Walmart is $7.87, so that $20 blade should last almost 3X as long.
    I acquired the $32 beam style blades for the cost of the entry blades at Walmart and after eight months the driver side blade is starting to sreak and squeal in a light rain. Replaced it with the $5 Michelin blade that was there before for a year and there is no streaking or squealing. For $64 I can buy sux pairs of the cheap blades which will be 4x less expensive in the long run. Also the beam type blades come with a bunch of cheap plastic adapter arm clips which are complicated and time consuming in installing and removing the arms.
    I used to rotate my windshield blades with winter blades. Upon removing the blades I would clean them with isopropyl alcohol and apply rubber conditioner called WipeEaze, that came in a small squeaze bottle with a foam applicator with a slit in it to run the blades through, you applied a second treatment after two minutes and store them till it was time to change over to summer or winter. I remember doing that for six years with the two sets of wipers. Last year I used the last of that wiper conditioner and can't find it anywhere, I searched the name on-line and the manufacturer and address listed on the label with no luck.
    I also remember not too long ago, NAPA had a spool of that wiper arm rubber on the counter, and they also sold the packaged refills for the less mechanically inclined.
    Also the small rear window wipers are hard to find and stupid expensive. Cheaper to buy the 26" blade and cannibalize the rubber and have a 13' spare piece of rubber for half the price of the 13" wiper.

      What's so gimmicky about overpriced, lower quality wiper arms? Rain-X treated wipers are a gimmick that don't do what the manufacturer claims and being overpriced makes them a ripoff.

  • @guesswho2378
    @guesswho2378 Před 5 měsíci

    FAIL. You should have mentioned that you must have gotten your replacement wipers as OEM equipment because what you get online are long strips of rubber or silicon material and each end of it looks the same and you cut it to length. So, what do you do then at 1:35? This video is of no help to us who don't go to OEM for an exact replacement of our rubber bits.

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  Před 5 měsíci +1

      What are you talking about? Nothing in this video is OEM, I even have the aftermarket parts linked in the description. At 1:35 I am trimming the strips to length (which I explained). You seem to be the only one here in the comment section that is struggling with this...

      @@DoItYourselfDad What he means is that if you don't have OEM wipers; you likely cannot take the housing apart and remove the wiper blades from the housing.

    • @DoItYourselfDad

      Yes, you absolutely can. I’ve got non-OEM blades on the front of the car in this video, as well as every other car I own (more than I’d like to admit), every one of them I can swap out.
