- Check out incredible Food Packet, Survival, General Purpose! Huge thanks to Oldsmokey for hooking me up with this thing:
/ @oldsmokey1
This one came from a Pilot's Hot Weather Climate Survival Kit from the Vietnam War era. This Emergency MRE is still in service to this day, but this is the first generation of it - where it all started back in 1965. Inside are incredibly well preserved contents - so let's give it a look.

It seems like it... absorbed the cheese...
imagine youre out in the woods of enemy territory and you hear someone say "Nice hiss" while opening a meal pack lmfao
SpaceHeretic TM lol
SpaceHeretic TM plot twist: imagine you're in enemy territory and you hear someone say "nice hiss!", but they've been out there for 30 years. XD
SpaceHeretic TM funniest comment... crying laughing
omfg i laughed so hard at this comment
Sander Schoester same here lol'd,
Being watched by other soldiers in corner of jungle*
"lets get this out on to a tray"
"nice."
I swear, “It’s still ok” will be Steve’s final words.
Words on his gravestone will be 'He thought it was still okay, it was not.'
... and will be the litany of the post-apocalyptic Steve1989 cult that against all odds survives through the 20-year famine.
Muaha. Classic!
or "this is still perfectly good...at least I hope so"
I opened a vacuum sealed toner cartridge at work the other day and said "Nice hiss." My co-workers were like "wtf?"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
lol
Join the club. I started subcontiously saying "niceee" like him and have felt the urge to continue with "let's get that out onto a tray" on multiple occasions lol

Nice!
"lets get this out on a tray, nice!" ill never get tired of hearing that
Damn look at you, nice!

YES. Always makes me happy.
And the "mmmkay" right after the "nice".

"Let's put u on a tray, nice!!" Sorry
"What am I doing with my life" - Steve. I feel the same way lol. I'm sitting here watching you drink chicken broth that was meant for a US pilot in Vietnam.
Get into herion
@Patrick Ancona sweet
@@harrymonk6 Nice!
LOL
Breaking the fourth wall there.
What are YOU doing?
LMAO what am I doing watching you do it three years later!
LOL
"nice hiss"
Steve's colon: *please have mercy*
I’m convinced his entire digestive system is made out of some sort of ancient wrought iron filled with space acid
There is no mercy
Random dude in 1965: "I can't anymore, I'm full, please save it for later."
Steve 50 years later: "Let's put it on the tray"
"it's a bright yellow cheese bar.. of death." "a true diamond in the rough, considering how it smells." this video is winning super hard.
I'm always suspicious when a food item is made by a pharmaceutical company.
Cheese bar, molded. Yup.
Some kind of cheese-potato crouton bar to break up in your soup.
"You dont ever want to eat these fudge bars" **takes a bite**
REX101100 the funny part is that is the second bite from this particular bar, if I'm not mistaken lol.
thats his thing.. something will be so wretched and hes so grossed out by it but hell eat the whole thing lol
Wretched Slippage with the strange exception of the Lamb Curry from a British 24 hour ration, which he said looked and smelled like 'baby vomit' and wouldn't touch
mmm. Delicious. This is my favorite!
He's a Viking, isn't he ?
''This one smells terrible''
A few secs later...
''Well, this one is perfect!''
Love the way Steve opens a CAN? !WOW!!!!! 😉 😂 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
steve, for what it's worth, I directed my 87-year old, veteran father to your channel, and he absolutely loves it. keep up the good work.
"That smell is......awful" OMNOMNOMNOMNOM
LOL! LOL!
I read that right as he said it lol
Lol!!
I am addicted to these videos, I don't know if it is the novelty of having a glimpse of what it was like in the past, or if it's his Patrick Bateman-esque descriptions. He has this infectious enthusiasm that comes off creepy yet endearing.
ghost3337 omg I feel the same way
Yeah - they are so brilliant! 🤩😂😂
Lolz feels
yassss
Totally agree!
"ohh it's aweful" * proceed to take a bit *
You remind me of the Victorian scientist, Frank Buckland, who made it his mission to eat as many animals, no matter how unappealing, as he could in his lifetime. And in the name of science. If an inmate of London Zoo died, it wouldn't be long before it made an appearance on Buckland's dinnertable. He, like you, had an iron constitution. No matter how old or foul, you'll try it, in the name of science. I love your videos - and you cannot just watch one; they're way too fascinating. Your presenting style is wonderful - you know your subject, and obviously love passing that knowledge on, and it's wonderful to see how these packs are created, and in some of the older packs, actually fitted into their containers. Rations have come a long way since the 'Bully Beef', and 'Garry Grease' of my late father's British Army days (1946-1954. He was called up, but loved the life). This is a great channel, and I love it. Nice one.
Smells bad
Looks bad
Feels unatural
Must be safe for consumption
In this rare case it was, random guy! A real food phenomena
just curious, how many times have you gotten seriously sick from eating old rations if you do not mind me asking?
it cracks me up whenever i see him lift something above the camera thinking he's just smelling it or looking at it, then it comes back into camera view with a bite taken out of it, and hear him crunching "hmmm, what am i doing with my life"... literally lmao with an :O face, love you Steve
William B I think he said only once or twice total
random guy - we've all had our faces between a special woman's legs thinking the same thing.
The man is a hero. He is willing to eat stuff that orcs would pause to taste, and no matter how vile the stuff is he keeps eating. Steve must have a gastric system built from chrome vanadium and leftover space shuttle jet exhausts. Terrifying yet deeply fascinating.
lmao 🤣
That comment is so funny. And full of metalurgy and other wisdom.
I'm obsessed with the sound of you opening the cans sped up... it makes my hairs stand on end!
Unicornicus Oceana welcome to asmr
"I stepped on a landmine and lost my foot. But when I buy a pack of socks, it now lasts twice as long...nice." - Steve.
Did he actually?

Anyone realize Steve is eating history
One ration at a time.
History in a can.

It would be NICE to get a reply from the famous Steve himself
Hey Dustin! Hope you have a Nice evening!
Dustin Gardner he replied, lucky! But *nice* for you
I kinda had a feeling ....... Nice
Hell yeah I got top comment and a freaking reply. Thanks Steve!!!
"Its a yellow cheese bar of death." *takes a bite*
I will never grow tired of your videos!
Steve is mesmerizing. I just love to watch him and listen to his descriptions!! He could do tours just opening rations packs on a stage and sell out the auditorium! J
Those cornflake bars look like the stuff they made school desks out of.
Maybe the cornflakes bars are desks
And they said there's no food allowed in class...
Steve I'm just putting it out there man you should call one of the companies that makes MREs and see if they will give you a tour on how they are produced
Oh yes!
And while your there steal the secret recipe for the glorious cheese-bar!
Steve throughout the whole tour
Steve: NICE
Oh heck yes! That'd be a fun field trip for all of us.
Nice
Steve: "OMG that cheese bar smells so foul"
Then he takes a bite anyway lol.
Steve I salute you for having a cast iron stomach
When Steve upsets a kitten, he be like
Steve: "Nice little hiss!"
Nice hiss
The minor adjustments to the sound clips of him tapping the packets and tapping the spoons are hilarious.
DUDE! The editing you do with the drink mixing is glorious! I just noticed it the other week and you make some pretty good riffs. NICE!
Thanks Beta! I probably have a little too much fun doing those - but just can't help myself. Alright, cool!
BetaAnonymouse i laughed too
Shit was funny
Nice
I love the little riffs also. They're worth a chuckle.
Nice to know I wasn't just imagining that haha
One thing I notice about a lot of the products in your reviews, specifically the older rations, was just how many items originated in northern New Jersey. Linden, Newark, all pretty blue collar areas at the time
It's so easy to buy into this guy's love for this..I especially love when he finds smokes...I love the analyzing of the smokes
fruity and foul was my stage name
CthulhuInc oh...
Ok
What you did on stage

im going to name my next metal band "bright yellow cheese bar of death"
Not Corn Flake Bar Type 2?

Gr33n_ Gh05t how about Nice Hiss?
Gotta love Steve. Produces a video showing food consumption and apologises for chewing sounds. He boosts my confidence that the twenty year old British rat packs I have in my cupboard will still be edible when I get around to finally eating them! Thank you for your great content from UK 🇬🇧
It's 3 AM and I'm watching Steve eat a 50 year old survival ration. Life is good.
On a side note, it's interesting that so many of these older rations (survival rations especially) do not have any water purification tablets.
imagine what its like when he eats fresh food
He is sustained only by old rations.
opens can of 7up.......nice hiss
opens bag of doritos......dry, seems stale, but nice cheesy flavour
opens slim jim......looks off, smells off, nom nom, good meaty texture
I actually said this a few days ago. Same appreciative and sweet commentary to actually edible, nice, enjoyable food? I would cook all day every day for someone like that. :D
exactly
"Huh, no hiss"
i don't even know how i ended up seeing war dated rations and mousetrap reviews... but i'm hooked hahahaha
Lucas Perboni mousetrap reviews 👀 now I found a new hobby
mousetrap reviews? never thought of that, i gotta check it
Love the musical stirring spoon tapping!!! Genius!!!!
This was a beautiful ration, packaging was in great shape, can't believe it was so old!
Got-f*cking-damn-it I can't help but chuckle (without fail) each and every time Steve does the ole' "now let's get this out onto a tray....NICE!"
CLASSIC😎love it.
Thanks for making My day with the personality of yours
That makes my day to read, Jeremy. Thank you
Steve1989MREInfo i allways pictured you as this nice person i guess i was right Much Love
You really do help people bro. Your personality and presentation is decent. I didn't even know what an MRE was, now i'm like an expert!
Hey thanks so much Craig. What you said there really does make my day. Making these videos helps me, and if they help others too that's even better. Hope to always be able to do this and teach you & the folks about rations, and hopefully make our days a little brighter in doing so.
Hey thanks Jeremy! Much love back my friend.
Ah man I love this guy! His humor makes my day! I wouldn't mind living off mre rations and any survival kits at all. It's great to see someone like Steve here to make these reviews with a sense of humor! Gj!
"You dont want to eat these, they will ruin your day." *eats more* oh my gosh😂😂😂
His shits must be legendary

Steve has coined catch phrases. I constantly catch myself saying "Nice!" "Not bad" "Nice hiss" "Alright cool"
Steve, your videos are great. I watched one with my mom and she really liked it. Thanks for your wholesome and complete information.
"It's just a . . bright yellow cheese bar of death"
I am an English Lang & Lit guy and I watch these for your narratives. You truly do have a gift.
This is going to be the best week ever!
This is the nicest too!

Steve1989MREInfo nothing makes me hungrier than watching you eat 50+ year old rations. Keep up the good work
LOL I've developed a habit of waiting to watch his videos until it's time to eat. It's weird, but I like it.
Carl Smith lol
I watch while I eat sometimes too. I'm thankful I'm not eating what he is, but the way he gains an appetite and excitement to eat this stuff makes me hungry!
this video is pretty, nice!
Hey, not bad!

Steve1989MREInfo, love your vid. I now have a good ending to a really bad day, thanks for all your hard work.
I think your vids are the ultimate salute and tribute to all the troops out there having a rough time. Respect

It's awesome to see a ration type that I work with as Aircrew flight equipment working with the 25 man life raft from another time. The ration kit we use now still has the chicken broth, coffee replaced with tea, you get mints, 5 cereal bars. 2 short bread, 1 corn flake, 1 granola, 1 chocolate chip. The instructions are on the outside of the box and it says the same thing minus the key thing.
Oh brother, I’m drinking my coffee as usual, loving every minute of what you do.
Nice!
He's gotta have some mean shits.
he has military-grade intestinal microflora :-D
jednoucelovy type 1 or 2?

I love the commentary. The dry humor and sarcasm is the best. I really feel like I could hang with Steve and chat about MREs over a over priced not so good IPA any day.
Thank you for your service, my father retired US Army, chief warrant officer. Two tours nam.
Steve's videos can make any bad day seem...nice!
Hey thanks Andrew, not bad!
Nice
I love this channel. Steve has the best narrative, and his content is document oriented. It's not some other annoying dude yelling the whole time and hearing him smack his food to only tell you that it tastes good or bad. Keep the great videos coming.

Oh yes I would recommend to watch emmymadeinjapan she does these kids D's of videos too and she's very soft spoken and we'll manered

I wonder how good his immune system is from all this tasting...

Probably VERY strong.
Very nice.
Naw. Stuff like this is so loaded with preservatives that his liver gets more of a work out.

After watching several of these, I find myself getting excited when there's a "nice little hiss."
Your mre reviews are a guilty pleasure for me you just do it so right
DON'T DIE STEVE!
And seriously, if you write a book on this subject I will buy it,
You really are the MRE connoisseur

It is really interesting to see all the different types of survival rations through all the years and all the countries. I highly enjoy your videos.
Steve is a brave man with a cast iron stomach. Carry on.
when ever I see a new video by Steve 1989 I always say nice and it feels like Christmas a new video after another thank you man
Hey Tj, thank you man. That makes me happy to read here.
My girlfriend and I have been saying it long enough that its an ingrained expression in our personal interactions used to express that feeling haha.

Nice little hiss: 0:52
Nice
So is a hiss good or bad? Does a hiss reflect gasses and off/ineatable food?
Michael A. A hiss means the container is still under a vacuum giving the chance of the contents to be fresh

I would watch this channel what must have been like 3 years ago, just came back today still satisfying. "Nice"
I gotta hand it to you, your reviews are hands down the best on the net. The flow, the descriptions, and the genuine love for this really comes through. I watch often at night to relax before bed or with my 14 year old son. He absolutely loves your channel and we have picked it up as a hobby. Thank you for your tips on how to tell if something is good or not and thanks for giving me another way to enjoy time with my son. Keep on keeping on!

“Look at that I don’t even think I’m going to try that I mean look at it “ comes back into view with a bite out of it lol haha love this guy love his videos
By the way, Steve, you were wondering what they were thinking when they added sorbitol to everything. Well... considering that even modern MRE's are sometimes called "Meals Refusing to Excrete", they might have been thinking "laxative"!
Okay, probably not, actually. More likely they were thinking "humectant"... in other words, "keep it moist". The three main reasons for using sorbitol as a sugar substitute are laxative, humectant, or cryoprotectant.
Nice hiss
That's a real doozy!
The reason why I like to watch this kind of videos is because how people like Steve take great pleasures in simplest of things such as the MREs. If we all learn to take pleasure in things that a lot of people take for granted, I think we are not too far in finding the key to happiness.
I love watching your videos so glad I stumbled on em randomly on the tube
