I bought 1 of these a few years ago and the water purification tablets came in the plastic bag the instructions came in.
They usually come sealed with extra sticky white tape that has 2 bands of tape running vertically either side of the label and a 2 inch band of the extra sticky white tape wrapped around where the 2 tins meet, and it looks like your ration had already been opened as it was not the original tape.
The original tape is incredibly difficult to remove as it is so sticky and still leaves a sticky glue residue on the container after removal.
The water purification tablets might have been removed after they expired and were not replaced as they usually expire after 3 years from manufacturing.

Excellent presentation, as always! Having served as an Army LRRP (Co. G, 143d Infantry -- 1981-85. This was one of only two LRRP companies remaining in the post-Nam era, and both were part of the National Guard rather than the Regular Army) during the early 1980s and my unit worked extensively with several of our European counterparts, including 21st and 23rd SAS. Their SOP mandated making one's own survival kits. Note the plural -- each man was expected to make and carry two: one based on the standard MOD mess tin and worn on one's belt kit (called LBE in the US Army), the other a small metal box of one's choice the size approximately that of a packet of cigarettes and carried in a shirt or trouser pocket. A certain amount of individual discretion was allowed concerning the contents as long as the essentials were packed. Both were to be sealed with electrical tape. I still have both of mine : one packed in a Netherlands forces mess tin (quite similar to the UK version) and carried in a re-purposed 100-rd SAW ammo pouch, the other in a re-used Altoids box. The RAF Mk.9 kit is clearly very well thought out, of high quality, and definitely shows its evolution from the kits I've just described. Good troops use their imagination with adding "quality of life" items to their kits: curry powder and mustard powder were also very popular with the Brits, while a lot of Americans have a taste for stuff like Old Bay, chili powder, plain black pepper or whatever other spice mixes one can find at the supermarket. All of those can cover a LOT of culinary sins in an emergency! In place of manufactured food bars, we more commonly carried sealable plastic bottles packed with rice or other grains of choice (I preferred buckwheat, which is more nutritionally complete than rice and goes really well with beef or chicken broth. This is the main ingredient of the _kasha_ one finds in many Eastern European rat-packs, BTW). Once again, a good presentation!

They come with a 2 inch wrap of tape around the middle of where the 2 containers meet and a thinner wrap of tape each side of the adhesive label that secured both tins together securely.
That’s how mine came and have seen similar taped boxes on eBay over the years.

OXO cubes were probably the first dried stock cubes, being made with the process invented by Otto Liebig in the 19th century. The OXO building, the headquarters of the company is on the South bank of the Thames, marked by a tower with the word 'OXO' in stained glass on it's sides. An OXO cube mixed into boiling water is a very warming, comforting, and satisfying drink on a cold day.

Was it oxo or bovril that was developed from a need from the British government to supply a nourishing meaty drink to its army during war? I’m not sure which.

    • @lloydevans2900
      @lloydevans2900 Před 5 lety +9

Bovril was first created in 1870, though it was originally called "Johnston's beef fluid" after the name of the inventor in Scotland. The name of the product only changed to Bovril in 1889 with the formation of the company of the same name, though the recipe didn't change. Strangely enough, the demand which provoked the creation came from the French army first, though of course it was later used by the British army, perhaps most widely during WW1.
The confusion is certainly justified though, for several reasons: The original "oxo" beef stock product was a semi-liquid paste, not unlike bovril both in taste and composition. Oxo cubes were also used in British army rations, beginning in WW1 and are still used in British military rations today. Plus of course while both brands were started by separate companies, today they are both owned by Unilever, so there is no longer any real competition between the two.

    • @kaitlyn__L
      @kaitlyn__L Před 5 lety +7

Bovril definitely has more actual meat content than OXO, just going by taste and personal experience and everything (I've not looked up stats about either, so feel free to disprove me), and is a paste that looks more akin to Marmite or Vegemite. Plenty of people enjoy a cup of bouillon from an OXO cube, like me, but making a drink from Bovril seems to be more.. official? OXO always talk about using it as a base for making your own soups or stews, rather than having on its own.
Anyway, now I'm thinking about the line from Spaced:
"I'll have a pint of the brown stuff."
"[giggles], you can't drink a pint of Bovril"

    27.P/38
    Instructions
    1. All food components in this pack may be eaten ONLY when about 3 pints of drinking water per man per day are available.
    2. Used efficiently the rations will provide sustenance for a number of days, even when doing hard work, provided that fresh water is available.
    3. The circumstances in which you find yourself must decide the amount to eat each day. Plan this carefully, endeavoruring to eat a portion of food each day. As a general rule, it is not necessary to eat very much on the first day of the survival period.
    4. It is not essential for most men to drink water during the first day of the survival period. Obvious exceptions are those who are injured or losing body water at an excessive rate by seating, vomiting or diarrhoea. If possible each man, after the first day, should drink at least one pint (hal a litre) of fresh water per day. Under some circumstances this may be impossible. However, even 3/4 pint per man per day can sustain life for quite long periods, depending upon the climatic conditions and other circumstances.
    5. At all times conserve body water, for man can survive longer without food than he can without water. During survival at sea and in very hot climates, utilize shade and breeze where possible and avoid unnecessary exertion. If marching move by night if possible.
    6. NO MATTER HOW THIRSTY YOU ARE DO NOT DRINK SEA WATER AND DO NOT ADD SEA WATER TO GRESH WATER RATIONS. Hovever, if a few drops of sea water get into your fresh water rations by mistake, this is not serious.
    7. Fresh water should be purified before it is consumed. This can be achieved by boiling or using the water purifying tablets provided. Sea water cannot be purified by either of these methods.

      Contents
      Drinks
Beef Stock 'Cubes' - half a 'cube' to a lidful of water. (Note sterilisation of water)
Coffee or Tea - if the water has not been sterilised with Puritabs, or previously boiled, then it must be boiled during the making of coffee and tea.
Milk Powder - add to drinks as required.
      Sugar - use as preferred.
Food Packs (Flavoured bars or tablets)
Remove carefully from the laminate pouch so that these can be used again to store water or food.
Eat the food portions only when hungry.
Not mor than eight portions a day.
Eat only one tablet at a time.
      Chew Slowly and Well
Salt - when doing hard work, and seating vigoursly, AND WHEN PLENTY OF DRINKING WATER IS AVAILABLE, salt should be taken. Do not take salt if water is in short supply. If you take extra salt you need extra water. the salt will also help remove leeches when applied to their point of attachment.
Spatula - all purpose mixing utensils.
      Box
Use the box and lid as cooking pots. Use the empty food bags for storing water and food components. The four lengths of wire make 'loop' handles for the box. The ends of a length of wire should be placed in the holes at one end of the box and bent in the form of a hook.
NOTE: The box hold about 3/4 pint water when full to the holes for the wire.
      STERILISATION OF WATER
Fresh water must be sterilised before drinking using either of the two methods below.
If water is muddy it should be filtered through a handkerchief, piece of sheeting, or other available material.
The tablets are the first method of choice.
      a. Water Purifying Tablets
Thes are found in the survival kit.
Add 1 tablet tot he polythene bag or lid full of water then wait 10 minutes before using.
      b. Boiling
Heat water until it boils. Boil for as long as is practible. If stored, keep in a clean bag or other clean container.
SEA WATER IS NOT PURIFIED BY BOILING OR PURITAB TABLETS
