I’m sure it will be great when it’s dusty or raining. Pull in moisture and dust into the system. Sounds great… The battery grip / R5 in general does need a higher voltage battery to fully utilize the big white primes though. So that would be a welcome change if that was included.
@@Tinvaak good explanation, but I hope it’s up to the task. Since this is the main choice for wildlife photographers, and Canon is apparently unwilling to provide the top weatherproofed body to them.

If the ducting through the camera is airtight/watertight, it shouldn't be a problem.

It makes sense to put the active cooling components in a separate grip. Then, if you don't plan to do anything too demanding with your camera (which in my case would be 100% of the time), you won't need to carry all that clutter around.
The more I think about it, the less I feel that Canon will announce both the R1 and R5 II at the same event. Each camera deserves its own announcement. They might be on the same day, though.
I hope they announce an updated battery to go with the R5 II. My main complaint about the R5 is middling battery life when I do a lot of burst shooting.
It does seem like a strange thing to do. I do hope my source is wrong. I'd like the announcements separated by a week, but canon did announce the R5 and R6 together despite being different cameras.
I think it depends on how much of an upgrade each camera is over the R3 and R5/R5C. If the reality just isn't that big a deal, doing a two-fer might be the best approach. If either of them will actually blow our socks off, they really should separate them.

I'm sure Canon is holding events elsewhere as well. We should be getting more leaks very soon.
Never, ever, had a problem with overheating in the Canon R5. And that includes shooting all day long in equatorial climates, desert climates, and 90+ degree / 90+% humidity conditions. Add this venting system, the on-board ND filter, other video-centric features . . . the R5ii would be more appropriately named the R5Cii. And the camera body almost HAS to be bigger and heavier than that of the R5.
It was fixed in later firmware versions. I bought the R5 at launch and experienced overheating regularly… which is why I returned it and bought the R3.

It seems that most specs in the R5 II are related to videographers. Classic still photographers are no longer appreciated anymore in 2024 by most camera producers, I don't have any overheating issues (sometimes some hot pixels with a series of very long exposures) and don't need any active cooling in my camera. I have the idea that the R5 II will not be my next camera.
I'm getting that feeling, too. It'll be more complex. Likely bigger and heavier. And with nothing meaningful to offer stills shooters. (The first curtain mechanical shutter on the R5 is so good, I've never felt the need to go electronic.) The original R5 is an amazing camera for stills shooters.
@@billmartin1010 I can only agree, I only use the mechanical shutter because of the 14 bit Raw and slightly better DR. After 40 years Canon not to happy with many changes and priorities. Still hoped for many years for a real replacement of the 1Ds MKIII or the 5 Ds/r. Don't use and don't need video but have to pay for it.
Count me in on your reply. Many channels including this one highlight video capabilities more than image resolution, dynamic range, etc. I really enjoy the R5 but if Canon or Nikon indeed come out with a more photo-centric 60+ mpx full frame camera that's where I'll head, skipping the R5 mk2. When some challenge this and say just go medium format, my answer is the glass and the lack of it.
If you are predominantly a still-photographer, any particular reason you’re considering a newer body? Even older DSLR’s are more than capable for this in the modern day and age.
@@bsc001as a still photographer I expect developments like better dynamic range, a higher resolution (landscape and studio) and better sensors. When new cameras are not improving for still photography I will keep my R5 I as long as possible.
A very cool solution, always welcome. In 50 years from now, we will have camera's with a build in fridge.

Heat-pipes are already that, as they are phase-change coolers.

Why doesn’t Sony over heat ? They are smaller !And Nikon seams fine as well . I do welcome the new Tec but ?
And both those brands also handle the extra, concentrated heat of TWO CF-Express cards with 45+MP sensors!

I have a r6,r5, c70 and have never over heated .
Heat's been an issue for all cameras for a long time. And with ever increasing MPs, and stacked, global sensors and AF demands; all these stress the CPUs and datapaths and the required power to process all the informations spells h-e-a-t. Some manufactures do things to minimize the heat profile which can reduce feature sets. The R5 when it first came out ran head-on into these issues, an embarrassment for Canon's lead product. These all got worked out eventually with the R5. Plus, the user can do things especially when in the studio to minimize the heat profile of a camera. But the heat issue is here to stay given the current hardware constraints.

Prores raw is not real raw, its a 20% of what is possible with real raw footage
The R5C already has a fan -- and that body is an inch thicker than the R5. Maybe this is Canon's way of moving the fan off the thickness of the camera and onto the height of the camera. We will see.
Thanx for the update, Simon. Smart move by Canon wrt the cooling-solution. Even simple ‘externally’ vented heat-pipes without active cooling would be a massive improvement, as basic convective cooling does wonders for removing heat from electronics, vs enclosed non-vented solutions.
Adding an active fan-solution in an add-on grip (with a bigger battery?) will basically give limitless recording capability, at least where thermals are concerned.

No. The vents are sealed off from the camera guts. But the vents might well accumulate grunge (and be hard to clean).

We already knew this. Didn't a canon source say that the R5 Mark II was going to be a cross between the R5 and R5C. Naturally we assumed active cooling would be part of the package. As a hybrid shooter I don't mind this but how many Photography ONLY shooters are going to be annoyed that they will be paying a higher cost for tech on a camera they will never use and have to deal with the increased weight from tech they will never need. Hopefully Canon comes out with an R52 that is photo only with basic video features.
I do not understand why an actual "Patent" is warrented for such a standard, basic function. As we know, Canon uses patents for other anti-consumer purposes.

Yes, agreed. Computers and laptops have been using heatpipe coolers for at least a couple decades. This is rather old tech.

Panasonic managed to fit active cooling into the S5II/x without the need for an external grip. So I would hope this grip adds something besides just cooling… perhaps XLR, Timecode and SDI ports?
But do you want to lug active cooling components around all the time, even if they won't be needed? I'd prefer them to be in the grip I won't need to buy, thank you.
@@CrowPal Same argument could be made for GPS… or EVF. The issues with adding required functionality via a handgrip, is if a cage is used, it must constantly be swapped out whenever the handgrip is employed. It makes switching between use cases a much more time consuming process.

As a non-Canon shooter, I'm curious about what capabilities the R5II will have that other cameras don't that cause it to need help with cooling.

Yes, that’s the essence of it.
This is good news for the video users. Good news for stills photographers? No. I've never heard of an R5 overheating during stills shooting.
Most overheating came from video shooters, but I did hear from stills photographers in the tropics. But even if it doesn't overheat, higher temperatures will reduce image quality.
Has anyone taken notice of how thick an R5C is? It's a full inch thicker than an R5. (Pull it up on B&H and look at the specs and photos from the various angles.) With all the new video features, it seems to me that the R5ii may have the same added thickness that the R5C already has. If that's the case, stills shooters, do you want it? And further . . . being an upgrade ALSO on the R5C, can it cost less than an R5C?

Could this cause dust issues for the inside of the camera? Because if the sensor unit isn’t completely sealed dust could get inside expensive lenses when mounted to the camera body.
Hi Simon, I hear the R5ii will only get one CFxB because of cooling .. any chance they'd put a second CFxB inside the active cooling grip ??
I love the R5, however there are more and more times I find it just too big to carry on an adventure. My work asked me to record a high activity work event. The only reasonable camera I could take was the M100 and a 22mm prime. The 24 to 50 lens size is ideal, but performance is unacceptable. I could see myself with a R50 and Sigma Zoom. I think the XT50 will be my next camera purchase. My point is, the larger the R5, the more it stays at home. Changing lenses, on an R8, while hanging from a tree is not an option, that is the kind of work outing my company has. The fps race does not interest me.
Have you tried the Sony a7Cii? GREAT full-featured camera in a smaller, lighter form factor. I use it with their 40mm f/2.5 prime for street and travel photography. Amazing, small, light package with the full-frame 33MP sensor and an advanced "AI" AF system.
Sounds like the R5 or and R5 II is way over kill for your needs. The Fuji XT50 is a great system and fun to use and perfect for stuff like work events. It never pays to over purchase electronics when something lighter and cheaper gets the job done.
I hope they will put lit buttons on the camera. Like the Z8 from Nikon, for example.
I see comments from still photographers about the lack of substantial still upgrades in the R5mIi and I would also love a still centric camera but if it has a stacked BSI sensor that would be an upgrade, but maybe not for someone who already has a R5. That said, I still hope for a 60+ MP stacked BSI photo centric camera with ok video, a canon/nikon size body that does not feel like a small toy (sorry Sony) and a full range of zoom lenses (sorry Fuji gfx).
if this is true, i would say that the R5 and R5c will be superseded with a single R5 model.

For video, this is going to go far beyond the R5C. Definitely an R5Cii, whatever they call it.

This heat sink patent is further evidence that there will never be a R5C II; the R5C will simply recede into memory if only as a cruel reminder at Canon's frantic attempt to address the over-heating R5C. The R5 II will be packed to the teeth with video features, exciting features and leave Canon owners to ask, "R5C mkII? What's that?"

Sounds like an EOS-1DX on a gimble isn't ridiculous enough for Canon, please do not use the grip cooling on the R5II, the internal fan is great for video rigging, but a grip is a nightmare
I think that all of these cooling and video related items are fantastic improvements to the R5 for video shooters. My questions are more about the improvements for stills photographers who also do some occasional video clips. I have yet to see something that truly wows me relative to the current R5. I was hoping for something like frame extraction from video clips or something like that from raw video. In the absence of something more in the stills area it would seem that I could buy two R5 bodies with care packs for about the same price as the R5 II with the cooling battery grip and care pack. For stills shooting this is becoming more of a choice between multiple Canon R5 units, a single R5 II, or a Sony Alpha I. Do you have any thoughts about this announcement for stills photographers who only do occasional video?
I recently replaced my R3 with a new R5 body . . . for $2,750 from B&H. It is VERY hard to beat the R5 at that price. At that price, it's "competing" with 24MP "mid-grade" bodies!

Canon USA is selling refurbished R5s with a one year warranty and the ability to buy a CarePack for $2199 and other stores are selling LN bodies for $2k. I really like the R5 sensor for still photos but I do take occasional videos and extract still frames from raw video. Two for one is a tough choice.
No links for R5 Mark II
If they put an actual fan they should make it so that an owner can easily replace that fan. My laptop recently had their fans go bad and I replaced them. The blades were coated with dust but turned freely. Since I have no means of testing them I don't know what the problem was. The laptop gave a message that the fan did not pass the start up testing. If there is a fan that may keep me from a purchase.
I think cameras more and more develop to things with capacities, that I don't need.
I sold my Panasonic G6 and won't buy the G7 because of fans causing the bodies to make the camera hard to hold! So looks like no Canon R5M2 for me.
I am hopeful that they will introduce some interesting lenses. An improved macro lens with 2x magnification? Smaller, lighter high quality f/2 L primes on the wide side of normal? A moderately-priced supertelephoto -- 600mm f/5.6 or 400mm f/4? The more we learn about the R5ii, the less convinced I am that either of these camera bodies is going to be attractive to me. I shoot the R5. I've used the R3 long-term. I don't shoot video. Unless there's a big surprise waiting . . . let's hope for interesting lenses.
So, in order to get the extra cooling you’re going to need to add the extra bulk, weight, and expense of a specialized grip that most people wouldn’t want to add. Mmm...not seeing a whole lot of innovation there. Other manufacturers probably - no, almost certainly - thought of adding some extra piece of some kind to provide more cooling but ditched it knowing very few would want to add the extra weight, bulk, and expense to get more recording time. It’s seems its appeal would be limited to a very small number of professionals.

My guess is that you will need to use the cooling grip to use 8K60 unlimited. With stills pictures you will not need the grip if you are not taking pictures in the sahara desert.

"Vented" ports means air can flow, which means water can enter. "Active" means this requires energy to work, which means the battery is going to be more stressed, which probably will result in poor frame rates when the battery level gets low (which is a factor in the r5 and written into the users manual) and/or less battery power to move big primes. So Canon is pushing this to bird photographers and already ignoring two potential issues. I cant see where the "wow" is coming from, unless you plan on sitting in the studio recording yourself doing CZcams videos about how great these cameras are, and if thats the case Canon has more than a half dozen 24mpx cameras perfect for that!
I will change for sony.
A cooling grip. Swell. Just like all the other manufacturers who have to sell cooling grips to keep their cameras from overheating. Let me check my list. That's none of them. Do you have to offer a cooling grip for a camera that isn't prone to overheating?

Here is this new camera and guess what it won’t overheat because if active cooling…..oh but you have to buy this extra £400 grip that contains the active cooling. Don’t want the grip we’ll have an overheating camera. Literally a hallmark canon type move.
