24 megapixel now makes a lots of sense.
This is why I tune to this channel even at 3:30 am LA time.
I do believe the sensor design for both cameras will be a big upgrade over the previous models, just not sure what technologies will be baked into them. However, they will be packed with a whole new design.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker dynamic range, 16 bit and low noise is one of the 3 combos I’d been waiting on and this new sensors seems to be targeting those areas big time.
Canon has introduced the C400, an $8000 cine camera without DGO because DGO leads to slower readouts and poorer frame rate performance in full frame. So I have a hard time thinking Canon will all of a sudden pull that off in a sports/action hybrid.
16+ stops of dynamic range is very exciting! The embargo ends in 6 short days! 🎉

I own an R5, which I will keep. I have given up on Canon future cameras. I bought a Leica Q3. Looking forward to simplicity of design and excellent images and color.
Seems that all upper tier cameras will be getting a dual gain stacked sensor architecture. It just makes perfect sense. Given the MP count for this R1 appears to be 24 MP it seems likely that this newer chip architecture would first be attempted with lower MP count sensors. Over at Andrea's site I've been saying that the purported A7S III successor will have a dual gain stacked sensor; the technology is too compelling. And Simon, you rightly underscore the point that the data movement requirements for pushing all of these bytes through the system requires a faster supporting chip technology. Thankfully, nanoscale circuitry is already with us in modern computer CPU/GPUs so Canon doesn't have to reinvent that wheel.
It looks like new cameras will still be released in 2024, but it will be on December 31) Closer to night
Canon will get a lot of R5 II cameras out the door by December, not so confident about the R1. Depends on how accurate sources have been with shipping dates.
Very interesting is that Canon said DGO technology slow down read-out speed of the sensor and that's the reason why Canon C400 does not have DGO technology. If Canon R1 super fast 2ms read-out speed camera does have DGO technology the rumors are wrong about read-out speed and in reality will be much slower, or R1 will be without DGO technology.
Hi Simon, you know this tech excites me .. but could some rumors be crossing over ? About a month ago, the R1 was getting 16 stops DR, few days ago it was R5ii getting those 16 stops.. never heard about R5ii getting DGO, but I would be strongly surprised when an R1 with DGO and half the mPickles than the R5ii has “only” the same DR.
Also your notes mention about SGO being a bad choice.. I fear that part didn’t survive the editing of the video..
The stuff I have reported on I am very confident, but can't say much about what Canon Rumours has reported on. I was able to confirm from another reliable source that the R1 and R5 II will both be announced July 17.
The “save the date” email has gone out to us normal users from Canon Europe with a calendar reminder for the 17th. The time translated to 6am Eastern time in the US.

Great video. We have seen very little improvement in photo sensor technology in terms of quality. We still have a black and white sensor. Canon, please please give us a genuine RGB sensor.
I wonder if anyone will ever develop a camera with three sensors, one red, one blue and one green. It would not be cheap, but the sensor design would be simple. I sense this would only be done in specific industrial use cases.

Canon spends a lot of time on R&D as we can see from the patents, its just a matter of what they are focused on

This technology (and the patents) certainly apply to security cameras. And that's a big market for Canon. Are there any rumors on lens introductions?
Going back months... there was a rumour about a 200-500 for pros. There are various primes like the 24mm, rooms like the 70-200 f2.8 Z and some super telephotos.
The fact that there's a patent for this from Canon doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it's likely, not confirmed, the R1 will have a dual gain DGO sensor. If so, Sony I promise will also do something ground breaking with the a1 II. Since I'm a Sony user, I'll wait!
The Canon R1 secret Weapon is that it's a Niche Camera for Canon just like the Sony A1 and a9iii are. Everyone will be mostly focused on exactly how well Canon has developed the R5ii. That's where it all Begins and Ends. So it better be a STACKED sensor Canon.

The R1 will need something spectacular to be competitive with R5II and Nikon D9 or Sony - with only 24mpx. Good detective work. Maybe it's this DGO. But most of us care more about the r5 with 45mpx. The proof is in the pudding on Jul 17. I think Canon kept leaks to the minimum to reduce expecatations after last r5 and the overhyped heat issue (that drove clicks). Let's wait and see.

@OrdinaryFilmmaker I was at my local camera store earlier today, and coincidentally, the Canon regional manager stopped in. He dummied up on the R5 II when asked about Wednesday's announcement. He said it was teaser number 2. He acted like the R5 II didn't exist. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Yeah right, they mail all customers twice about the announcement of teaser 🙈
By the way: was “the lens” mentioned in the strawberry moon comments actually the 200-800 at last ??
@WernerBirdNature Hello Werner! 👋🏻 Yes, I used the 200-800 to photograph the Strawberry full moon. Shutter 1/4, Aperture f/9, ISO 800. The lighthouse was 4.5 miles from where I was standing near the water's edge.

I've not yet used mine for such 'long exposures', but I posted yesterday on Insta a crazy macro from this lens (because my wife had my real macro in use)
So far I used it more often on our current Scotland trip than the 100-500, which I used only on Lunga in between the puffins. Aiming for flight shots, I've got many to throw away, but also some great ones yet to process ..

You keep calling the R1 a stills focused sports camera; But didn’t Canon themselves say publicly that the R1 will be a jack of all trades and master of all?
Both will have DGO but the R5 will be much slower. ... Hopefully.

See - that would make sense. Putting it in the R1 but not the C400 doesn't make sense, unless Canon is borrowing some part of the technology for the stacked sensor. None of us expected a partially staged sensor I the Z6 III but there it is.
Quite simply because they have to save something for the C500 Mark III. It makes sense that the C400 shares the sensor with the R3 and the R1 with the C500 Mark III.

I hear you, but everyone, I mean every source and every publication is stating a 24mp sensor. Unless Canon has been sneaky ;)
Canon is definitely the outlier when it comes to "flagship" resolution. It seems Canon has decided to be THE 24MP camera company (not that there's anything wrong with that). Only one full frame camera body outside the 24MP range. I don't understand it, but I"m sure their marketing department has seen something I haven't. I love my R5 and it would be great to have more Canon options in the 45 to 60MP range.
It makes me wonder if Canon will ever refresh the 5DsR... lots of talk, but little action.
Difference between a Canon Flagship and the rest is that it works flawlessly for a long time. It's not just a spec sheet for people to comment on CZcams about....If you need to crop more get the driver of the jeep to go closer, or buy a longer lens.

Gherkin Gamut: The sensor's dynamic range ensures that no highlights are too bright, and no shadows are too dark. It's all about balance - just like a perfectly seasoned pickle.
The R1 is in another galaxy so I'm not very concerned about it until future more affordable models come out featuring some of the same tech like the R6-II taking some specs from the R3 as well as the R7 getting the same AF system as a higher model. The R5-II sounds more interesting to me. If other surprises are coming I would enjoy hearing about them, but the R7-II is what I would like to hear more about as well as the R6-III
Curious to know what higher model the R7 focus comes from because it's pretty awful in that regard...
@@christophercarlimages9003 I haven't had an AF issues with my R7. The AF it was rumored to have inherited was the R6 but due to the slower sensor readout speed it can't keep up with high fps rates that the system is capable of (40 fps) in servo mode. It does share the same processor (Digix X) as the R5
quad Digic XI chips...faster RAM and tonnes of it...
