  • Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul. One of the coolest battles in Star Wars gives us a nice behind the scenes look from the bonus DVD as George Lucas, Nick Gillard and Rick McCallum go through the process of filming the final fight that shaped the future of the galaxy with Anakin Skywalker training under Obi-Wan instead of Qui-Gon, resulting in his turn to the dark side, and becoming Vader.

    That’s a big reason why obiwan was able to survive against Anakin. It was because of their relationship and the years they’d sparred and fought beside each other. They knew each other’s moves better than their own.
    So the fight looks more choreographed because to the characters a lot of it is just reflexive because they know each other’s tricks.
    Other Jedi didn’t have that relationship with Anakin and so they weren’t able to overcome the immense power gap.
    But even with a huge power gap, obiwan was able to utilize his defensive style and his history with Anakin to stay in the game long enough to get a victory condition (high ground)

    • @hanburgundy4317
      @hanburgundy4317 Před 3 lety +45

      Exactly. On top of that, Obi-Wan's style/form was a perfect counter for Anakin's.
      When he was first trained by Qui-Gon - up until the end of The Phantom Menace - Obi-Wan used Ataru; it's a high-speed, high-energy offensive form that utilizes the Force to enhance the user's physicality, resulting in enhanced speed, reflexes, and acrobatics. This form came with a caveat, however, in that if the fight became prolonged the user would eventually run out of steam - this is what happened with Qui-Gon, and Maul took advantage of it.
      After he had watched his master lose, Obi-Wan switched to Soresu: a defensive form. By the end of the Clone Wars, Anakin used Djem-So, a form that focused on counter-attacks and powerful strikes, so Obi-Wan's Soresu allowed him to "rope-a-dope" and not be taken advantage of.

    • @JL-el9kb
      @JL-el9kb Před 3 lety +25

      And and... It was Obi's experience fighting Maul that taught him the importance of the high ground. So when Anakin tried to jump over him liked he had to Maul he was ready for it. Stating "don't do it" he knew he would best Anakin in that moment.

    I think it's so cool that Liam Neeson's precise, fluid, powerful style perfectly matches Qui Gon's zen, mindful personality. And Ewan's intensity and knack for picking up the choreography really shows a young Obi Wan's eagerness, with just the slightest insufficiency of discipline. Ray's previous training makes Maul a visibly formidable opponent.

      Even though he said he was going to retire which was a lie. He knew he couldn't make another without getting Death Threats as part of the Backlash.
      Ahmed Best almost Committed suicide cause of the backlash of Jar Jar Binks.
      Kiara knightly said it supposedly Ruined her Career and same with Natalie Portman soon after episode III..
      Jake Lloyd got bullied in school and look how he turned out...like shit.
      The actor who played Panaka demanded more money for episode II but Lucas refused and let the actor go and thus creating Captain Typho to fill in the role.
      But all these problems occurred when the backlash began.

I know that one of the biggest complaints about the prequel trilogy was that the lightsaber fights seemed choreographed, but watching that short sequence of strikes in slow motion really helped me to see that a lot of the strikes were actually attacks that just happened to be intercepted at such a fast pace, that it only looked as though they were aiming at one another's weapons.

    Qui Gon really does have a beautiful form in the movie. It's very subdued, controlled, direct, and flowing like a real master of the art. In contrast to Obi Wan's erratic, intense, eager and passionate Padawan style.
    Maul is like a combination of the two only more talented than the Jedi at both.
    That's why I love this fight along with all the duels in ROTS. They tell a story and narrate with the fighting. Who's more naturally skilled? Who's more cautious? Who's on the offensive or defensive at any given time? Who's starting to lose their edge? What type of character is this judging by their combat style alone?
    I felt that Attack of the Clones didn't really accomplish this as well as this fight and the one's in ROTS. It was just Dooku verbally saying, "Yeah, I'm more powerful than you.", where it would have been allot more climactic and intense for him to show that in the fight itself.
    Don't get me wrong the fight in AOTC was and is still a good fight, but the choreography just isn't even on the same level for some reason.

    Duel of the Fates was an excellently choreographed fight scene where you can tell the expertise and training of all the coordinators. I think what made it so groundbreaking was we had never seen it before and it solidified how bad ass the jedi were. All we had seen were these very medieval broadsword style fights with laser swords.
