THE REAL SECRET TO GETTING LAG (DRILL 1)

- This is the first golf swing lag drill I want you to do and the best way to do it. If you haven't seen my first tip "The Secret To Getting Lag In Your Golf Swing" then I suggest watching that one first here: • THE REAL SECRET TO GET...
That tip gives you the understanding what you need to do and how to get the maximum hinge angle at the top. Without this angle, you will never get lag in your golf swing.
This lag drill focuses on the top of your backswing. That's right. Everyone claims to have the best lag drill, yet, they don't even talk about the top of the backswing. This is where it all starts.
Free samples from my Body Swing book and video series here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
So you need to get the top of the backswing wrist angle set first to its maximum. This is the best drill to allow you to do that. Once you do, you can work on maintaining the lag angle in the downswing.
For now, stick with a mid iron, but into the future, you can do this drill with driver or other clubs too. Stay focused only on this for now. As you start to set your backswing, you can then move on to the downswing by doing lag drill 2 and 3 that I will post in the future.

What a refreshing type of golf instruction. A common sense way to improve your swing without requiring you to have 5 or more swing thoughts to think about when you're learning golf.
Having more than 2 thoughts will be a total disaster. Try doing multiple thoughts if you are under pressure or as you say trying to learn the game, golf is tough enough without trying to make it complicated. You have to make this stuff simple.
Always loved your videos Paul. Great work dude
Glad you like them!
The great thing about Paul he teaches the same swing that works since he first
started showing videos on CZcams. Every year someone is adding the new swing tip
for the new year. Paul teaches what works and you have to do the drills.
For sure. I have been teaching this going in to my 33 year. I know the results I get so why change what I teach. New stuff coming in the future once the weather gets better. Thanks for the support.
I don’t think Paul is being condescending. I just think he’s passionate about teaching the golf swing the it’s supposed to be. You do you Paul, you are certainly helping me!
Thank You! I know from years of experience that this stuff is attainable from all golfers and will make everyone play some good golf. Why struggle like I did for years and years, you can hit the ball well right away.
Watched the lag series 2-3 times. Been a chronic caster till I watched your series. Hit a lot of range balls one day and took it to the course the last two days...awesome! Still building repeatability but I’m hitting my irons 1-2 times longer. Drives are higher and farther. Thanks Frank
Very good. This is tricky for most people. Glad you worked on it and are seeing the results. This will make the game so much easier into the future.
What can I write? Superb. Correct, Useful. I will make sure to check my wrist today. Sorry for praise on all videos that I have seen, but deserved.
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
i watch a lot of instructors on here and this one is comfortably my favourite....he's clearly so close to losing it on the viewer a few times. Classic stuff. 3:15 mark onward is great.....again at 6min briefly. Love it.
Yep, I want people to get it. I don't candy coat it. I tell it like it is.
Over the years I built a terrible habit of not breaking my wrist in effort to control ball accuracy. Not only did I not fully cure the accuracy, but I lost a lot of distance on my shots. I have been doing this drill for a solid week and I am hitting the ball like I was in my 20's again. Great lesson Paul! Thank you.
Glad you found me and see the power in what I am teaching. You would have lost distance for sure with those wrists locked up. See the wrists not as wrists. They are a hinge. A hinge hinges ... and rehinges. A hinge in life if loose. So you need super loose wrists. They you get serious power with no effort. Keep at it. I have tons of other tips too. I would watch these as well:

You really have a gift for explanation. I love so much all your videos. They really changed my golf game. 😊
Thanks so much. Simple is the key. Keep up the good work and stay focused.
Great tip! So Unique and yet, easy to find implement.

Paul, you’re the coolest. Appreciate you and the channel! 🙏
Thanks so much. I appreciate it.
I love this guy he's hilarious! Keep Goin Paul
Thanks for watching!!
That was an incredible video and drill, I've broken my scaphoid bone in my left wrist twice and dislocated that thumb multiple times, I didn't realize just how restricted my movement had become until practicing that drill. I can't wait to practice this drill for a couple weeks and try it out on the range and course.
Glad it helped! I have taught numerous people with this issue. Amazing how little some people can hinge their wrists. You now know that however much you can hinge is your maximum. You can still generate good power from that spot so don't think you can't.
I had SCL ligament surgery 18 months ago and follow up 6 months ago. I'm right there with you! Need to practice this a lot and use the wrist-grip-spring exercise devices all the time to be able to set the angle and not lose my grip at the top.
one of the best lessons so far, looking forward to learning how to HOLD it through the swing. The missing link.
Thanks. Will be posting the next one shortly.
6:02 - Classic Paul, doing his best Clint Eastwood impression. Had me laughin' so hard! Great stuff Paul as always, can't wait to see Drill 2.
Exactly. There are times when I need put the hammer down. That was certainly one of them. Wake up call.
Thanks again Paul. Very practical
Very welcome
This is the 3rd time I have watched your video on lag. Started working on it yesterday. Hoping it will give me more distance specially my driver. Thanks!
You can do it!
I have been swinging my 9 iron in the last 3 days for about 100 times on the lag exercise. Really need to work on my distance with my driver as I only it about 200 yards.
I played today and I have seen mark improvement in my hitting. The only problem is I over swing When I hinge my wrist. Do you have a video to prevent or stop over swinging. Thanks!
Great tip Paul still working on it and the grip over and over hopefully I’ll ingrain it into my swing
Very good. Takes work but the payoff is well worth it.
You're welcome! Knowing you love what I do makes it all worthwhile.
Hello Paul. This drill put it all together for me. I literally gained 25 yards with my seven iron Keep up the good work.
WOW!! Great stuff...keep up with the good work.
Sage advice, squire.
Thank you.
Thank the lord above I found this channel great work Paul 🙏🏻
Thanks and welcome. Lots of tips here. Just take it one step at a time.
Totally agree what I did was to cast the club and lost distance plus hit the ball very high.
You definitely have to work on this.
Once again a great tip. Paul you appear to have strong hands and forearms. Doesn't this strengh determine how much lag and coil tension you can build up in the transition from backswing to downswing whilst keeping the wrists "relaxed"? The legendary swing of Sam Snead comes to mind.
Not at all. That would mean that no 12 year old would have leg when I see everyone of them with perfect lag and I never have to say one word about it. Train your wrists too be loose. If you do and start your body first, you will have lag. Take work though.
Great, great, great...
Thx...
Glad you liked it!
Thank you again Paul! One thing I'm trying to make sure. Am I doing good if the club is resting on my "V" (between my thumb and index knuckle)? Or should the club rest more toward my thumb?
Yes, rest it in the V. I will do a tip on it in the future.
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you very much! I wasn't sure I saw it from your book or somewhere else. I am trying to get my old swing back after taking a few years off. As I remember all those fundamentals from your "swing machine golf," it has been relatively easy. Perhaps, I can be even better than before!
Yes, I do have it in my SMG book. This is vital and can only be done with the neutral grip. So if you are trying to get it back start with lesson 1 and just focus on each piece of the swing. Doing way more practice swings than balls you hit. Do it this way you will have it back in no time. It's all about the movement. Get the movement ... you get the ball.
Hi Paul, when I hinge my wrists to you recommend pushing out with the heel of my top hand?
You can do that. Need to be careful you don't disconnect under the left armpit though if you do that.
There are 4 wrist movements: flexion, extension, radial and ulnar flexion. The wrist flexes in the backswing but it is the type which can be confusing. Johnson at the top of the backswing has a very flexed toward the palm left wrist which gives a flat appearance whereas in your video the wrist appears cupped in the opposite direction.
As soon as you start talking like that I tune out as well as 99% of other people. You are making this way too complicated. Johnson's wrist is severely bowed. It's that simple. This is a serious flaw that was not corrected as a junior golfer. I have seen this many times over the years. My position is relative to a 2 knuckle grip position. There is no way on earth the average person is going to square the club from Johnson't position. This is fact.
Paul, are you coming in Florida this winter? I’m a Canadian snow bird and I’m around Fort Lauderdale till April the 10. Thanks. PS I’m member on your web site.
Unfortunately no. I really don't travel anymore. I typically take time off in the winter to get things ready for the next season. If things change I will certainly let you know. Thanks for asking.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the quick answer. You know, I’m teaching golf in Quebec Canada to beginners. I learned the whole fashion way to teach golf but I really like to way you teach. I think this is the best way to practice golf. So I’m trying to include your method in my lessons. I hope you don’t mind because you have the real approach.
By compress, are you referring to pressing down on the handle/grip with the left palm on the takeaway?
No. Hinge the club and you will feel the bone in your left wrist compress as you hit the top. In other words, hinge to your maximum. If you are looking for lag just do this drill. You'll have perfect lag in 2 mins:
czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you, Paul. Definitely saw major lag when I recorded my swing. It's amazing how feel and reality are so different. Appreciate it!
Thanks for this, Paul. Question, is your wrist flat at full hinge or cupped? Also, how does one keep from over straining the thumb in the hinge?
My wrist is cupped relative to a 2 knuckle grip position. Yours should be too. In no way do you want a flat wrist at the top. There is an angle in your left wrist as you do a 2 knuckle grip. This should be the same angle at the top. Do you grip. Hinge the club up to your nose. Then rotate to the top with this angle. There you should see the slight cupping once you look back at it.
You may feel pain in the thumb too. You need to make sure your grip is neutral and in perfect position then just keep doing it. The pain should go away. If not there may be a physical issue. If this is the case then you need a workaround.
Paul Wilson Golf Paul thanks for the tip, my hinged/cupped wrist at the top gives me an open club face at the top if I’m not mistaken. Or should the club face be square at the top with our cupped left wrist?
Can you show or explain what brings the arms down and how the club face squares up? Is it a shoulder turn that drops the arms and not so much us actively trying to pull our arms down ? Thanks in advance
Square at the top with a slightly cupped wrist relative to a 2 knuckle grip position. Match the leading edge to your left forearm at the top. Your body rotation brings the club down. You need to start your legs and hips first. In no way are you pulling the down the club. You are squaring the club with loose wrists. If you are hitting shots with slice spin then of course you would be working on manually releasing the club for a while. Once you can consistently do that you would be focusing on body. So you have hinge/rehinge coil/uncoil.
I am an all arms golfer. I am having a rough time with these drills. At this point my swing is really bad now to the point of shanking almost a whole bucket with my 6 iron. I hope others are having better luck !!
So stop working on lag. You need to get the club releasing first. Follow these:

How much is your book and how do I get it thanks Paul
thanks for your interest. please visit: bodyswing.com product tab at the top of the page.
I allow the club to hinge in my fingers as much as wrist.... not losing control of it, just feeling the pressure of the club grip as it reaches end of back swing...... views?
Fingers of the right is fine. Left should be across your palm. Not sure if you are doing my grip right. Check here: czcams.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/video.html
Paul I forgot to ask you but is your driver standard lenght or shorter. ty
It's 44.5"
@@paulwilsongolf Ya thats what I want. I am going ti get it cut down some. ty
Yes, longer does not mean faster. You will get to a certain length when you will actually lose distance. I would go on a launch monitor and try different length shafts. You should be able to see the numbers change at a certain length.
When I try that I feel the but of the club lift from my lead hand palm is that normal or should I have a tighter grip?
Yes, hold on tight. It's loose wrists not loose grip:
czcams.com/video/YHCEPu9e_1k/video.html
czcams.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/video.html
@@paulwilsongolf got it thanks
It looks like you're cupping your left wrist to get to the max lag position. Do we cup it or keep it flat to get the max lag position?
There is a slight cupping in the lead wrist relative to your grip. 2 knuckle grip = slight cupping as seen in many of the best players of all time.
@@paulwilsongolf Thank you.
You have a very cupped left wrist at the top of the backswing, whereas most teachers suggest a flat wrist. The cupped wrist can provide lots of lag on the downswing but where does the ball go
Never heard that one before. My left wrist is slightly cupped which it should be relative to a 2 knuckle grip position. Do a neutral grip. When you do you will see an angle in your left wrist. Hinge the club up towards your nose. Once hinged, coil and set the top. That is the hinge and how much cupping you need in your wrists. A flat wrist would be manipulation of the wrist or a weak grip. This is fact. Where do my ball go? Dead straight or with a falling to the right.
I have never heard a teach say cupped left wrist at the top. 99% of tour pros are flat or bowed at the top
You are not seeing the same tour players I am. You are most certainly wrong.
Saw your chicken wing video too....my chicken wing and the lag seem to go hand in hand....I am soooo not flexible at 58 yrs old esp in the wrist. What do you recommend as far as left thumb long or short?
They sure do. I don't teach a long or short thumb. Here is the grip step by step: czcams.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/video.html
But lag is when club handle is ahead of ball at impact?
Sure the club would still be very slightly lagging. They are referring to that as forward shaft lean. In no way have I ever thought about this. You get this when you get the right fundamentals in your swing. You need to watch drill 3. If you are holding that angle too much it will be a disaster. czcams.com/video/1lj7uao01KE/video.html
Paul Wilson Golf thank you, do you have any drills to get shaft lean.... ive watched videos of myself and definitely flipping the club at impact. I can literally see my right hand over take my left hand which is adding loft instead of delofting my irons.... thanks
Can you explain what lag is?
Lag means something is trailing behind something else. In golf this would be your club trailing behind your body. So from the top you use your legs and hips to hit the ball. This allows the arms to follow creating an angle in your wrists. As the legs keep firing and arms and club keeps coming down this angle is released (if your wrists are loose) creating clubhead speed and squaring the face. If you want lag just do this:
czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
czcams.com/video/tHipoVuEzI4/video.html
czcams.com/video/SfIM2GWj9Cs/video.html
Watch this as I compare my swing to an amateur's swing:

@@paulwilsongolf Thanks so much Paul I'll check these out.
Within 3 balls your gonna be a tour player! Lol
Exactly.
Paul, your content is great. Your tone and delivery may benefit from some change. Probably just me but your tone seems condescending, as though you are tired of saying the same old things over and over. Certainly justifiable. Delivery in an attractive way will help you retain even more subscribers. Good luck!
Its not frustration but passion in knowing that this method works and fed up of seeing so many golfers struggle to get better, when its easy but you just have to know exactly whats going on in the golf swing. I had these same frustrations for years and nobody helped me until I figured it out differently. Just trying to help golfers out there not go through the anguish I did.
Well I have played golf for 50 years. You are a bit sensitive. The point is that Pictures or Videos explain much more than words.
Yes, I am sensitive. I actually want people to understand and get it instead of blowing through my stuff not understanding it and not doing it. I actually explain "why" things happen in your swing unlike others that just say to do this or that in a 2 min tip that I know you will never do or will never work. I went through this myself when I was taking lessons and trying to learn it years ago. I asked countless pros "why" and they could never answer my questions. If you don't know "why" then why would you do it? As I said, if you want to skip through it no one is stopping you but as I am doing the tip I think of things and mention them in the tip. I also say things then say it again, and again so it sinks in. People are easily distracted these days and people only retain 17-25% of what they hear. If you are looking for lag and want to do it quick then do this: czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
I'll get you perfect lag in 2 mins. Video your swing and you will see it.
Don't talk so much. Just show the drill several times and then explain
That's funny. I love guys with no patience trying to learn a game that takes immense patience and understanding. Here's what you do in the future. You take your mouse on a computer or finger on a mobile device and skip through the video. This is what I do when I watch videos. Problem solved.
