THE REAL SECRET TO GETTING LAG (DRILL 2 - How I Got Lag)

- Here's the second golf swing lag drill along with the image I used to get lag many years ago. Keep this image in mind as you practice. If you haven't seen my first tip "The Secret To Getting Lag In Your Golf Swing" then I suggest watching that one first here:
• THE REAL SECRET TO GET...
Many years ago I was flipping through a book by Henry Cotton called My Golfing Album. Near the back was a picture of one of the world's longest drivers at the time with an incredible lag angle. This became my secret image that I would think about when practicing. After copying this picture for many swings, I started to get this lag angle too.
Free samples from my Body Swing book and video series here: bodyswing.com/...
So watch this tip and use this picture as a mental image too. Try to copy it the best you can. This may not be instant but over time and with practice you will get that lag angle too.
Now I only did this drill in practice swings with short pitch shots. You can do that too or just use a 7 iron. If you get it with these other clubs you will be able to get lag with driver too.
Stay tuned for lag drill 3 coming in the very near future.

👏👏👏👍
I was just practicing my lag before this video game out here in my living room, my wrist is as stiff as a club shaft, after a little while I can see and feel the difference, not going to stop until I get it like Paul Wilson or John Daly, well maybe like myself:) Great video to keep in mind.
You'll get it. Just keep doing it.
Paul, you are a GENIUS!!!
I have tried every swing tip known to man before stumbling on your body swing technique. It made sense instantly. I’m 72 years young and hitting the ball further, straighter and with less effort than when I was 25 all due to following your instructions. I urge everyone to invest in your program....best move they will ever make.....GUARANTEED!!!
Thanks. Simple is the key. Getting people to understand is another. Glad you found me and are getting the results. Thank you also for the support. I truly appreciate it.
Incredible drill and thought pattern. Chick Harbert is from my home state of Michigan and I had no idea he was that long. Clearly it makes sense to imitate every single thing you see the pros do especially when it comes to effortless power. In my opinion you are the best golf instructor in the world. Keep it going.
Thanks so much. That's amazing you have even heard of him but being that long he must have had some kind of reputation. That book is super old. My dad must have got it when it first came out because I have been flipping through it every since I started. Funny how we see things that help us figure something out.
Your channel is the most underrated golf instruction on CZcams. In less than two weeks I went from 120 yard carry with my 9 iron to 138 carry on average. And I thought I swung my 9 as hard as I could. And Im just learning my new swing. Now it feels effortless with almost 20 extra yards.
Yeah, I know that. There are numerous reasons for this. I just have to keep making more and more people better. Eventually it will get to the point that everyone will be loosening up and keeping things simple. So glad you are doing well. Loose is the key. Please keep help spreading the word. I appreciate it.
Hi Paul, this tip from you and Chick H. is the missing link that Ben Hogan didn't mention in his book The 5 fundamentals. Lag is the Secret. I'm hitting so much straighter and longer With irons and driver. If this teaching would have been told 50 years ago there would be no such thing as over the top that plagues so many amateur golfers. This one move if taught and shown as the main ingredient in the golf swing would have changed the golfing world. Every one knows how to balance there selfs and knows how to aim at a target. Golf would be more fun if this tip was stressed more Thank's good job Paul! . 🏌️♂️
So glad you liked this one. Lag is a big key for sure. Need loose wrists to get it. So much more fun when you are hitting it long and straight that's for sure. I will just keep putting it out there. Hopefully one day everyone will find out and try it.
From your videos I think I understand leg at the top should your left wrist B-flat also when the hands and arms drop to the right hip area should I try to keep the club shift vertical as in the video and should I do this by using the right hand thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
Ok, I am hooked!! Post #3 soon!!
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for these tips on hinging. For some reason I stop hinging the wrist about 10 years ago. Now I know why my contact has been terrible for 10 years. Making a better turn away from the ball, getting my back to the target with a wrist hinge has me hitting it clean and long again. 👍😊
You're welcome. Did you take a break from golf 10 years ago. If so, that would be the reason. When you came back to it you started hitting. This is human nature. Now you have some good things to get you loosened back up again.
I really like the idea of working on lag with just short pitch shots.... my muscles and wrists are really relaxed this way...
Yes, this is a simple way to do it for sure. Just figured I was hitting all these short shots anyway might as well work on it. Not sure if you saw this: czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
Thanks, I am starting to use this in my swing. I have a swing speed of about 95, but only carry about 200-210. Wish I could get to Vegas for a 2-4 hour lesson. Thanks again!!!
Work on it for a few weeks and you will have it in your swing. The next best thing would be my app; COACHLINK. Download it and if I am online then we can connect immediately for a live lesson.
Paul...thank you for your reply...it would be a disservice to you if I did not comment to thank you additionally on the following ....I have spent the last three days since I saw your lag video and easy swing practicing your recommendations... knowledgeable, simple, practical and nurturing...result? Well I have had for 5 years saved and brand new the famous sldr s mini driver that I could never hit more than 30 yards...I went this morning to the range...and hit 180 yards on the 2nd try and thereafter of the fairway...not on a tee which would be easier..I am 64 years old...I look forward to following your videos more closely!
Wow, that's great. You are starting to get it. Good feeling when you start seeing results. Keep at it. Make sure you watch this tip too: czcams.com/video/pjOXHIWU8ps/video.html
Coach Paul now that the weather is better in AZ I am out on the course again. Lag is a new concept and I started to get the feel for it on the shore 30 or 40 pitch shots as you mention with a sand wedge. It's the first time I tried it. It felt like effortless power! I did it well. Then I went right to 85 yard full sand wedge and started shanking all of them low and and right. (palm face). I went back to the short shots. Look forward to the keep practicing the concept. I understand your message that it takes time.
Very good. Takes time. Do this too: czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
@@paulwilsongolf thanks coach Paul. Still just hitting the SW 30 yards like you mention. Its actually a new shot for me. Short high soft landing ball. I'm hitting 'em around the greens and people think I'm trying to be fancy or show off because it a full swing and the ball only goes 20-30 yards. They don't know I'm working on lag, I think. lol.....Will check out all your vids on Lag! for sure! Have a great day.
Yes, it's a great shot to have and if you are having fun working on it then keep doing it. It teaches you touch. Something that is lacking in most amateurs.
Ben showed it in some pictures but didn't mention this move in his book. Great job! A lot of golfers are now going to improve!
It is tricky for most to get it. Really, you just have to loosen your wrists. If you do and start your body first you get lag. Little kids have perfect lag without saying one thing about it. They are not strong so they are not hitting.
Excellent drill. I repeat this in the backyard 3 times a day, for about 5 minutes each, incorporating hinge and re-hinge. Don't want say too much more, get this feeling Paul will cover it in Part 3! Chick Harbert was an excellent pro, definitely long for the times. He had a very good record at the majors:
1947 PGA Championship - 2nd
1948 Masters Tournament - 3rd
1952 PGA Championship - 2nd
1954 PGA Championship - 1st
1957 U.S. Open Championship - 8th
1962 PGA Championship - 11th
Fantastic! You already have a good start on this. Pretty cool you looked up his record and yes, by the looks of it he could play.
@@paulwilsongolf I plan on getting out to the range this weekend. Will try to get some face on video. Should be interesting to see if there's any noticeable shaft lag. Not a priority considering 50% swing effort for at least 2 weeks, and my current shaft is low torque, not exactly ideal. I got 2 higher torque, lighter flex shafts coming in with the opti-fit adapters installed. So at least I can experiment with 3 different shafts, and run some video when they come in.
You will be needing that low torque shaft in the near future.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks Paul, definitely in agreement with that! I believe it too. Noticing a difference last few days in the backyard. Range this weekend, should be fun!
I’ve been watching you for 3years since I started playing I’m 33 so a little harder to learn but you’ve made it a lot more comfortable and easy for me at the tee box thanks Paul
Glad to hear it! Just take it a little slower, work on some swing positions and some of the drills I have on here and you will be hitting the ball great all the time. Thanks for Watching!!
soon as i can get over soreness i want to try the coach thing i never had a lesson in my life..club championship comeing up first week of September playing like i am now nobody can beat me with my handicap..i told the whole club if i win its cause i doing your swing now..Im doing what you say an trying to do them best i can all the drills im really giving this a go..
i told them at club they going to pay for me some coaching hahahahahahaha
i got me a old phone holder im going to put on a stick to be able to film my swing yea i dont have lot of money i got a 10 year old daughter doing your drills also she wants to play with school one day..her mom passed this month one year ago
Very good. The lessons on the app are only a few minutes so I can see you swing and give you a few things to work on. Glad you got your daughter into it. Once she hits some good shots she will really love it and you will have someone to play with.
Lots of great content from Paul this month - thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really puts it together. Still working on the last drill getting the feeling makes me want to spead up to get instant
Success. Not happening have to work on each drill with tempo and sequence. Will be playing tomorrow have to slow the tempo and not worry about the result.
Don't worry about everything for now. Just pick out a couple of pieces. It's like a puzzle. Get the pieces and you see the picture.
Your right want to move too fast.
Thanks for this tip, will work on this ...Cheers.
Welcome 😊
Wow. I looked up Chick Harbert. He had seven pga wins and in 1954 won a major, the pga championship (A match play tournament at that time).
Yes, another person looked him up too. Didn't know anything about him.
Thank you! Great tip...
You're welcome!
Interesting. I will be doing this practice. Thanks.
Best of luck!
Was really well delivered in this video, nicely presented. Hope to visit there one day if I ever return to the US, stay safe with covid!
Glad you liked it. Thanks. Definitely look me up. Yes, have to stay safe. My friend had it. Almost killed him.

when I try set max hinge angle, my left wrist cups. 100% of my shots are going far but left. Right handed.
Check your grip. I would think you are holding it too much in the fingers of the left hand. I hold it across the palm. Shot left you are hitting with your arms. Need to start your legs and hips first.
Your tips are really helping improve my game 👍👍
Glad to hear it!
Yet another excellent video Paul. Keep up the great work and sharing your secrets :)
Be safe
Thanks, will do!
After doing this for a few weeks lag just happened naturally without forcing it by trying to keep the right hand cupped
Glad you are getting it. Lag is important.
That picture looks like a steep downswing with a cup Left wrist. Wasn't that the old style with persimmon and balata ? Current tour pros shallow the club on the downswing and actual start flattening/bowing the wrists to square the clubface. Cupping the left wrist and concentrating holding a cupped wrist angle is opposite of everything else out there
It was a picture I looked at using persimmon and balata. I am not 21 years old. I didn't care about his left wrist I cared about the lag angle. Why does everyone want to over analyze everything?
there is no reason you cant maintain maximum lag while shallowing the plane and adjusting wrist conditions to square the club face. All 3 have to take place to hit a good shot. This drill is to ingrain the first ingredient without which you wont hit it long.
For me, when I do this drill my plane shallows automatically.
Thank you, I may have found the solution
You need loose wrists to get lag. Watch this one too:
czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html
Paul: My Right Middle Finger (I'm a Righty) is hurting after hitting (driver) a bucket yesterday. I figure I'm pushing too hard with my wrists, or perhaps I just need more Lag. Or maybe my grip is too loose, causing me to push with my knuckle. Any advice is always appreciated. Thank you!
This finger needs it's own room on the the club. Right now you are grabbing on and it is overlapping another finger. Now when you hit shot off center it creates shock. If your wrists are too tight this shock has to be absorbed somewhere so your grip will twist causing it to rub in your fingers. So in the future carefully place your right hand on the club making sure this finger is not touching another. This doesn't mean a huge gap just not overlapping onto or rubbing against another finger. Then you need to work on loosening your wrists so they can absorb the mishit instead of it twisting. Do some of my wrist drills to loosen up:

@@paulwilsongolf so I figured out my problem. It's not lag. I can make the best "practice swing" then stand over the ball and hit at the ball. It's all mental and frustrating.
This is a common problem. I talk about it here:
czcams.com/video/fuOJxv_22Hk/video.html
What you need to do is find an ending point you can repeat. I talk about it here:
czcams.com/video/gIp4ifKuZIw/video.html
This is what I teach in The Body Swing. Focus on the follow through not the ball. If you don't know where you are swinging to or the positions you are trying to work on you will just keep hitting. Change the thought.
Greatness thanks
I feel like no matter how much I try, I can't keep my left arm straight at the top of the swing and then on the downswing to keep that lag.
You don't have to keep the left arm straight at the top. I don't yet I have lag. Maybe that's the whole problem. In trying to keep it straight you are tightening. You need loose wrists to get lag. So loosen up. Try this drill. I guarantee you will have perfect lag in 2 mins:
czcams.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/video.html

So is this "downcocking"?
It is holding the angle. Never heard of downcocking.
Downcocking is a little beyond"holding" the angle where the wrists actually cock extra in the downswing from the momentum.
This goes contrary to your body swing method IMO because you are using arms only.
No it doesn't. When you are working on positions you would feel your arms. Once you get the positions you are turning your arms off. There is no way the average person is going to instantly turn their arms off in the downswing and loosen their wrists. Knowing this, I want them working on the positions.
