  • We R Memory Keepers released the Foil Quill heat pens that you can use for handwriting, sketching, tracing stamped images and lettering.
    These pens work off of a USB power source and transfer special heat-activated foil on to paper and cardstock.
    There are 4 pen widths: Fine, Medium / Standard, Broad and Calligraphy (Chisel). Each heat pen transfers a different amount of foil.
    The pen can work on any heat-resistant surface and it works best if the surface is smooth and free of bumps or dips.
    Please be sure to observe all safety instructions with this tool. It gets very hot and could burn.
    I go over some of the surfaces that you can use to work on with this tool.

      @Joan Cornell. I’m not trying to take business away from our lovely jg, who has been generous enough to make this informative video, but, I just use a regular glue pen with the foil. No heat required, but you are limited by the thickness of the glue pen nib. You just draw or write with the glue pen, and put the foil ( shiny side down on the glue). When you lift the foil, you get a similar look.
      BTW. Thanks for the video. I never thought of stamping the image on the foil. Excellent tip, thank you.

    Thank you for this detailed video. I have seen these heat pens in Michaels recently and have been curious about them. I think i will stick with my minc for foiling because it is so much easier than this appears to be. My handwriting is also average so I feel these pens would frustrate me. I’m sure these can be mastered to get the look one wants and they are probably wonderful tools for many people. It looks like the magnetic board is the best way to go for those that do purchase these heat pens....holds the foil better and in time would be saving money by not having to buy the release tape over and over.
    Again I thank you for your video

    Hi, Stephanie. I just got these too, from HSN. I got the whole set. I do not have a digital die cut machine so the pen form is great for me. Thanks for the excellent review. I did not know you could buy the 3 rolls of placement tape. Thanks for that info. I just bought a new power-strip that has USB ports in it! Great product to use with these. I found that you need a firm surface to foil on. I bought the We R Memory Keepers magnetic mat and magnets from Amazon. I also find that trying to fill in is tricky. If you like a sketchy look, you’re all set! LOL. I am looking forward to seeing you use it with stencils.

    Do you think I can use a hot foil pen and stencil on pencils?

  • @audregaer3281
    @audregaer3281 Před 4 lety +3

    TFS I purchased everything from HSN except the powerbank which I already had. I haven’t really put them thru their paces because I had surgery on my index finger and haven’t been able to put any pressure on it. That said I tried them out using my next finger and loved what they can do. It is good to know that archival ink will work but I am wondering if it rubbed off a little on the envelope or was that just the reflectiveness of the foil. I have a tip when using the washi tape-it is easiest to put the tape on the four corners pulling the foil at an angle. It is possible to get the foil really smooth. You can add additional tape along the sides if you want but I haven’t needed it on my ScanNCut mat. My mag mat is not coming till mid September so I used a piece of Masonite which worked well. I tried out the stencils which are OK but not great-the floral designs have unconnected ends so for instance you have to hold down the pieces that separate the branches and there are tiny veins in the leaves that are only attached at one end. The stencils are a good idea but not well executed. I will be interested in your take on them.

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Audre, Thanks for watching! I hope you recover soon from surgery! The archival ink didn't smear - it was poor stamping on my part. Also the ink doesn't stay on the project, just the top carrier sheet for the foil. Thanks for the heads up about the stencils and tips on the foil. I appreciate it!

      I also use the Washi tape only on the 4 corners of the foil. It is so much easier than trying to tape down the 4 sides and I can do a much better job of getting the foil smooth.

    2 Questions - does this work with any other foil? I know deco foil needs laminator heat so I wondered if that would work? Also could you write on a card with the foil and paint over the writing with watercolors - just a light wash? Thanks so much.

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  Před 4 lety

      Thanks again for watching! Deco Foil is slightly different and it does not work with the Foil Quill pens. The Minc foil works ok too, but not as well as the WRMK foil. Yes, you can do a watercolor wash over the foil. Thank you for your questions!

    Hi there, what's the difference between using the Heatwave pen vs. the Quill? I get that the latter has more 'nibs', if you will, but the former is wireless. Is it just preference? TIA

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  Před 4 lety

      Hi, Crimsonjade! Thank you for watching! The biggest difference is the power source. The Freestyle uses an USB cable to draw power from an electric plug with an adapter or a battery pack. The Heatwave uses 3 AA batteries. I have not used the Heatwave, but the picture on the package made it look a little awkward to hold. The Freestyle barrel can be held like a normal pen. I hope this helps!

      Hi, 58Kym! I have not had success with scrapbook paper. The heaviest paper that I have had ok-but-not-great success with is regular copy paper. I even tried light weight vellum and so far not great results. If it transfers any foil, it is sketchy looking. What I did find is that if you let the pen heat longer than 5 minutes and trace slowly, you may get good results. I will experiment more, but so far just very light weight paper works-ish. It seems as if the pens tips need to be a bit longer so you can see the tip more easily.

      Hello 58Kym! Thanks for watching. Yes, it would be nice. And the barrel flares out a bit, so you have to tilt it a bit to see well. The pen works pretty well, though!

    Your mat trips me out. Looks like your hand is going under the white lines when you move them around.

    I've been been binge watching different we r memory tools, I found this video to be interesting but it's just not for me, as you need alot of supplies and I'm on limited budget, I'd just use metallic pens or watercolor...mikelle art mom
