    2:45 You are right! They are constructing on the site since 1248 AD (incl. some 600 year break due to rhinisch composure. There even is a local saying that, when the Cologne cathedral once is completed, the world's gonna end.

    I visited Cologne in 2008 and was in awe of the cathedral. One of the best pieces of architecture I've ever seen. I also went to Lindt's chocolate factory near the river; it had a chocolate fountain to dip wafer biscuits in. Germany has so many great towns and cities - Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin are some of my favourites.

      Try cathedral limburg an der Lahn. It’s very small compared to Cologne. Maybe 1/4 the size but beautiful inside!

    We visited Cologne a few years ago and my abiding memory is the large number of homeless people. Not what I expected at all.

    You two are living my dream. I am also a huge Disney lover, like you guys, and hope to get to go back to the UK in the next few years. My sister and I were in London about 10 years ago for only 3 short days as a layover coming back from Poland to see family, and fell in love. You two should travel to Poland if you can. It is a beautiful Country and the food is great.

    The Archbishops of Cologne ran out of funds quickly when building their „new“ cathedral from the mid-13th century on and by the 1550s construction had stopped. Only the stumps of the two western spires and the high altar with the shrine for the three wise men (kings) had been completed. The rest just got a provisory roof and that was it. The wooden crane with its huge treadmill to hoist those heavy stones was left in place. After the end of the French occupation during the Napoleonic era the political power over the Rhineland was handed over to the Prussians at the Vienna Congress in 1814/15. There were tensions between the mostly catholic Rhinelanders and the protestant Prussians. When the original drawings for the cathedral (on parchment) had been recovered in archives and in some shops for antique books the quest for finishing the cathedral as a monument of German history became a movement all over Germany which in that era was only a cooperative body of some 35 states under the presidency of the Austrian Habsburgs. The Prussian king supported that move. The cathedral was finally finished in the 1880s. When it came to the roof the decision was made to use riveted steel and not wooden timbers as it would mean less weight and a lower fire risk. That is one of the reasons why the cathedral survived allied bombing despite of being hit by those 14 bombs that are often mentioned. It did nit catch fire. The stained glass windows had been stored in a safe place. As Cologne is situated amidst lots of heavy industries and the Cathedral got the railway station as a „neighbour“ around 1900 the cathedral suffered a lot from air pollution, soot and acid rain. Lots of the outer surface had to be replaced by exact copies from a more durable material (basalt) than the original sandstone.

    Whenever somebody makes fun about the way you pronounce Köln, just let him read places like Massachusetts or Punxsuatawney 😂
    It's only fair that English speakers have made up their own names for difficult German places like Köln or München. No need to twist your tongue if you don't really have to.

    Did the UK invent Champagne?
    Did the English invent bubbly before Dom Perignon? - BBC News
    The French monk Dom Perignon is thought to have invented champagne in 1697. But 30 years earlier, an English scientist discovered winemakers on this side of the Channel had long been adding sparkle to their tipple. Some call it fizz, some just call it bubbly, but its proper name is English sparkling wine.20 May 2017

    I have never understood ( I have - its a lack of Govt spending ) as to why, post war, the UK was a wasteland for so ling then crappy buildings which are now crumbling were constructed on the site. I mean Koln was near flattened yet the cathedral is rebuilt here Coventry cathedral is still un restored and most of Coventry centre is an early 60's industrial designers wet dream when it was a gorgeous Middle Aged city pre-war

    • @lemming9984
      @lemming9984 Před 6 měsíci

      I agree with you. The British government's attitude after the war was " just throw anything up, it doesn't matter". In Germany they cared - Dresden was another city flattened by the allies, but rebuilt carefully. I used to live near Coventry; the new cathedral is 50s arthouse, and boring. The ruins of the old one are better!

      Probably does need a clean up. Problem is you don't clean these ancient structures with cheap bottles of bleach. Hot water cleaning, low-pressure cleaning, and steam cleaning are one of the safest methods of restoring and maintaining soiled building façades and exteriors made from natural stone such as sandstone, limestone, slate, or quartzite, and other natural stones. Often carried out by experienced craftspeople or conservators.
