- Join us in Brussels, Belgium as we try lots of famous Belgian foods. We try Liege waffles and Brussels waffles at Maison Dandoy, crispy Belgian fries, and Belgian beer. At Chez Léon, we enjoy classic mussels and fries, plus a shrimp croquet. We also explore iconic sights like the Manneken Pis before ending our day with Belgian chocolate.

let's count the tourist traps, i'm at 1 with the strawberry waffle
Facts
Ho damn I was not expecting this kind of review ! You did your homework ! First the Plain Liege waffle as it should be eaten, then the Fries with mayonnaise again as it should, then wow you eat the moule with the shell of another one, that is the right Belgium way to eat it ! :D Thank you !
I am a Belgian. I was born in Brussels and so very often I watch these vlogs on Brussels food, history, population, and of course...beer. Your vlog is...actually the best vlog I have ever seen as an introduction to the center of Brussels and its food. Most vloggers invent stories about what they do and eat and it pisses us Belgian off no end! We are quite a bit sensitive concerning our sights and delights. You do not and show us how you are enjoying the joys of seeing the sights, eating the wonderful food, and drinking the world-famous beers we produce. Really great job! Cannot wait to see more of your travels 🙂.
As a Brusselian, can you comment on the default condiment on a waffle? As a Limburgian-once--removed (read Dutch- but despite being Liège adjacent, we usually are prone to the more heartier variant ), I would say warm cherries, not strawberry, wat would you recommend ?
@@marcovtjevWhen we make them at home we just top with powdered sugar and some whipped cream. Not TO sweet. Warm cherries would be nice to. But in my family we eat that with meatballs or meatloaf and sometimes with vanilla ice cream. (Flemish part of Belgium)
French Fries is from WW1.
The soldiers in the trenches had only almost rotten pattatoes
So the frenched = 'cut it'
And fried = ' fry it'
To get something eatable out of it.
So it is actually "Frenched and Fried' ...
You won't find any decent French Fries anywhere in France
So good to finally see a Liege waffle how it's supposed to be eaten, and not with 20.000 toppings invented just for visitors who don't know any better. Such a breath of fresh air, most of these kind of vlogs usually only go to flashy tourist traps and then overreact to every bit of crappy food they eat.
0:36 you can't watch a video of Brussels without seeing those things passing by (background) . very nice video by the way .
Belgian beer is sooo good. You need to spend some more time exploring it.
For me Belgium is great. Best beer, best chips (fries), best chocolate 😂
The other mussels from Brussels probably tastes better. 😂 Belgium and Switzerland have the best chocolate in the world. Probably the best reason to visit Switzerland also.
Agree I'm English but I'd also say they have the best beer on earth
Do try the Belgian coast, so many lovely resort towns to visit. And the coastal tram system (about 52 km. of it) passes through every one of them. Great food & 100's of different beers to enjoy.
Sounds lovely! Thanks for the recommendation. 😃
@@TheMagicGeekdom I'm English but I'd admit the Belgian beer is the best on earth,so go ahead treat yourself
What? It isn't lovely... it's absolutely a horror of Urban development. I go to The Netherlands or France to enjoy the coast, and I freakin live in Ostend.
@@Robalogot I mean kusttram is cool because it's the longest tramline in the world and if you're a couple and kiss on the tram it turns into a kustram in stead.
I really like Brussels and think it's underrated as a city to visit, perhaps because it's not as coherent in its attractiveness as somewhere like Paris. I worked there for 6 months and I think it helps to have the time to really scratch the surface of the place. Some of the suburbs are very attractive and worth exploring, full of art nouveau buildings.
I worked with some locals who assured me that the 3 best chocolatiers are: Mary's, Wittamer and Pierre Marcolini. I tried all 3 and needless to say they're fantastic. IMO Belgium produces the best chocolate in the world.
Hi there, loved the vidéo. Just wanted to tell you there is no cheese in the "croquettes de crevettes". It is basically just a beschamel (butter, flower and milk) with crevettes bisque and gelatine ;) Also there is no butter in the mussels, it is a reduction of white wine and mussel juice.
a good advice , if you wanne eat schrimpcroqettes , eat them at the port of oostende !! there the are amazing good , most of the schrimps are from the coast of oostende , there you can see the local fischerman with their horses in de northsea fishing schrimps
Wow. It’s so sunny.
Food there looks delicious. What an amazing place.
Belgium looks stunning 🤩
While in Belgium, visit Ieper (or Ypres in old money) and attend the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate which has been held every evening since 1928 except when the German army moved back in (temporarily). The area was a major are of conflict during WW1.
Belgium is a brilliant country for beer, there's a very wide variety.
We aren't in Belgium anymore, but maybe next time. Thanks for the suggestion!
oh that shrimp kroket looks amazing! looking forward to where you are going next!
Have you been to Belgium? Do you have any recommendations for places to visit or foods to try for a future video? Let us know!

I've been to Belgium plenty of times after popping over on the car Ferry to France for the day, then drove from Calais to Belgium. Quick and easy, and Belgian chocolate is very very good. You guys are getting around, just like your fellow countrymen 'The Grimm Life Collective' who have been in England and Scotland for a few weeks checking out creepy movie locations. They have just left the UK and now they are in Disneyland, Paris. Check out their fabulous UK videos from the last few weeks. They are AMAZING!! ☠👻💀🎬🎞📽🖤
Oooh yummy! Tartare sauce also usually include capers. It's delish!
Thank you very much for promoting Brussels!
Brilliant I am of to Brussels soon to film content 🙏🏻
Jean-Claude Van Damme is the muscles from Brussels.
Your knife and fork skills are getting better. Well done.
There's something that we call the tourist waffle, where people just want to indulge in chocolate, strawberries, and whipped cream. The traditional way is that the Liège waffle is a street snack, you eat it without any condiments while walking around the town. The Brussels waffle however is eaten while sitting down at a brasserie, but contrary to most tourist waffles, you shouldn't put anything on it except for some powdered sugar, as it ruins the mouth feel and taste of the waffle. Maybe you have some vanilla ice or whipped cream on the side,
The story of the Belgian fries is interesting, but not the Urban myth about the American GI's. Andrew Jackson mentioned fries in his memoirs, so long before the war. Some people like to say they're called french fries because of the cut, but the cut got its name from the fries, not the other way around. The earliest mention of fries is from France though, a stand in Paris sold fries, so this gives people ammo about fighting on the French side of the discussion. However, circumstantial evidence still suggests they're Belgian. Potatoes arrived in Europe through trade during the Middle Ages, we're talking about the ports of Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, as they were the center of trade at the time for that part of Europe. This hub of Europe also resulted in a lot of pollution, making the fish disappear from the rivers. So we see a lot of dishes that used fish switch to chicken and potatoes during that time. We know that fried strips of fish was a common dish, but we don't have confirmation like with other dishes that they substituted the fish with potato, even though it is likely that fries became a common man's dish. So common in fact that nobody thought to sell it, and it's plausible that someone from France thought it was a good idea to sell it in Paris, making the first historical record. The deeply rooted love for fries in Belgian culture, both in cities and rural places, suggests it's not the result of a fad but grew organically as you'd see more concentrated spots in the larger cities.
U guys should visit my city called antwerp...we not only have several of the best beers regionally but we also house the world oldest chocolatier district behind the cathedral which u will love to see aswell.the entering gates are made outta bronze skulls and its a really goth feel u get.if u like shopping u got de meir but u should also go to the lil streets near the central station, lots of places for souvenirs😉
I drove there from the uk and parked in the central square, had some fries and a chocolate bar for after. This brings back memories 👍
Parking at the "central square" (Grand Place) ? That must have been 50 - 60 years ago.
We want Belgian fries! So good. 🤤
We've only been to Brussels once, but would love to see more of the country and try more food!
Hello both. I’ve been to Belgium a few times. The part I really like, and I’d recommend it to you both is Bruges. Belgian beer nearly always come in special glasses. A couple I remember is the Delirium Tremens, it has a Pink Elephant on the glass. The other is Kwak, it comes in a chemical flask with a wooden holder to keep it stable. Trappist Monks beer is available, quite strong, and I used to get a banana flavoured beer!
Looks stunning! Our little dog Chubs could have been Carlys brother, the spit of each other we had him for 16years🐶 xxx
The steampunk band was Cirque De Soleil! Look up their show, Kurios, which was playing in Brussels while you were there, and you’ll see the round-bellied robot guy that they’ve reskinned the peeing statue with! So you got to see, and document, Cirque performers right up close :D I actually thought I recognised the music when they first walked past but thought “Nah, must just sound similar”, then saw the rest of the troupe later in the video, when you showed the round dude, and it all clicked into place!
Ghent is nice. As many old buildings as Bruges, but feels more like a city. Ghent is known for mustard (Belgium’s Dijon). Some of the restaurants also have mustard-related specialties, like mustard rub ribs. Ghent also do cuberdonks, little purple triangle candies.
Please go to Ghent- Its such a beautiful city
if i remember right that square you was in at the beginning was a filming location for flashmob orchestra, if i find the video again i will post it.
9:41 Ah I thought you were at the Delerium Cafe for a moment! They have about 2.5k different bottled beers in their cellars for general consumption. We were hardly out of the place when we went!
Belgium chocolate is quality, but those super sweet cocoa smells are hard to stomach if you're in one of the chocolate shops buying pressies after a night at the Delerium cafe!! 🥵
Big, big, BIG kudos to you for doing your research! It's so refreshing to see visitors eat at places the locals like as well. It really saddens me to walk around Brussels and see so many people fall for the "tourist trap waffles" (Luikse/Liege waffles with toppings, rather than Brussels ones), join super long queues with only fellow tourists in them for subpar fries, get ripped off on shady restaurant food or low quality chocolates, etc...
You should have gone inside at Toone's Bar and shown the cannon ball stuck in the wall.
If you are in Europe for a while longer, check out German Christmas markets, especially Hannover.
brugge is where you need to be !!
When American soldiers came into Brussels most people spoke Dutch (flemmish)
After the war French language took over and about one third still speak flemmish...
The province as a whole in which Brussels is, is Flemmish.
@3.34 ish "and they're turning potatoes into fries!....right before our very eyes... and you know they're legit" Nice one.🤣 More random "rappin" pls.😉
At 9:42 you're standing outside Delirium, they have the world record for the highest number of different beers on their menu
Belgium is the country of fries. It doesn't get any better.
I've just checked the Wikipedia page for French Fries and apparently the phrase 'French Fried Potatoes' was first attested in 1856 and Thomas Jefferson had 'potatoes served in the French manner' in 1802 at a White House dinner.
And in Brussels, each beer MUST be served in its own unique glass. No glass; no buy of that beer 🍺
As a Bruxellois, I would have advised you the best waffles come from the vans and used to cost 1.50 (haven’t been back for a while)! Also thank you so much for helping to dismantle the the myth that fries are French and acknowledging their true origin!!!
British Fish and Chips made its way across the channel from Belgium with the migration of persecuted peoples in the 18th and early 19th century, The Hugenoes.
1.50 € that must have been centuries ago. Last ones I remember was 2.00 € 20 years ago. Must be 3.00 € by now.
I am belgium
Great Muscles from Brussels pun.
Thank you so much!
delirium tremens best beer in the world and it's from Belgium
Belgians are the best chocolatiers in the world, there’s an abundance of chocolate stores, I’ve only been once but a long time ago but I find the chocolate from Belgium far superior to anywhere else.
She-Hulk. 😂
I'm a fan of the She-Hulk comics and the show was pretty entertaining, but we don't all have all like the same thing.
Ya know when you said “chip or fry, whatever ya call it.”
It’s a chip.
Thanks.
French fries are actually Belgian in origin and should be called Belgian fries
Great you did find "Le Cercuille" but a pitty you had no more cash as the beers are served in stone skulls; a real treat in that bar :p
And being so close to "Manneke Pis" and not go for a beer in "The Poechenellekelder" on the other corner, shame on you!
The Manneken Pis is all about defiance. Nobody tells a "Brusseleir" how to act.
You almost cause an international incident by calling fries "french" in the middle of Brussels, the one and only fries are the Belgian one, no need to say "Belgian fries" just "the fries".
It is obvious you had a great time in my home city. And I thank you for that. However, for some reason you picked all the foods that are high in starch and sugars, plus beer, plus chocolate, plus fried carbs. Nothing personal, but a diet centered on these impulse foods and carbs leads to insuline resistance, diabetes, obesitas and all the related problems of digestion and blood value imbalances. The current diet in Belgium is not healthy and the well documented early onset of insuline resistance in children is frightening.
Is there a reason why you did not feature the many varieties of vegetables we have over here? White asparagus, burdocks, Brussels sprouts, endives, the various locally limited cultivars of peas, celeriac and cauliflower, not to mention the many, many special varieties of apples, pears, prunes, rhubarb and sour cherries. Please come back soon.
first
But burgers are not from American the are invented in Germany Hamburg is not American to you can’t cleame
That to
Wow, DVD's, I think my grandma had some of those, and I'm 60 now😉oh and for Jeremy 🧵🪡 couldn't help but notice on the close up 😂😂😂😂
