- Ever walk into a bike shop and think to yourself, "Every bike looks the same!" Or maybe you're too intimidated to go into a bike shop, because you're overwhelmed by all the choices. We hope that this video will help you sort through some of the basic types of bikes and help you figure out (possibly) which category could be the right one for you. Of course nothing beats actually coming into our shop and test riding the bikes IRL!
We hope at the end of this video, all of the bikes no longer look the same!

this was the clearest, most simplified, and easiest to understand differentiation of bikes i've ever seen.
Yes, clear and to the point.
I can understand avoiding singlespeed and its subgenre, track, because they are usually for enthusiasts who know what they are getting into with a bicycle. Recumbents are not popular with beginners either and are priced out of the target.
However I believe he should have added in cross/gravel bikes. They make good beginner bikes (the only problem being drop bars for some), and fit in the “if a mountain bike and a road bike had a baby” model he came up with - not sure the car analogy though.
The only issue is the larger manufacturers haven’t yet introduced entry level bikes in this category yet, they’re still priced and spec’d too high. Looking at direct sakes like BikesDirect, it looks that they should only be $50 higher than an entry road, the added price being for the mechanical discs, something which should be in a fitness hybrid anyways. Overall, much cheaper that a sport hybrid unless that hybrid has an unusable front shock.
Mountain Bikes - XC, trail, all mountain, enduro downhill
Cyclo Cross - Gravel bikes
BMX
Great points. We do a video breaking down road bikes and include cross/gravel into that category. Basically anything with drop handlebars, we throw into that category. Thanks for watching!
they missed out bmx and a typical mountain bike is a hard tail as it is generally cheaper and faster than a dual suspensionlo to ride
0:25 Anyone else thought he was going to say ''What the fuck''???? Just curious :D
When I shot the video, the thought did cross my mind. You can't tell, but I do a slight pause there because I almost did. Thanks for watching!
YES!
Yeah😂
Same
That’s what probably all the BMX riders thought after he never mentioned them lol
THANK YOU for all of your comments about this topic! Our goal for this video is to provide a starting point for the newbie shopper who knows NOTHING about bikes. We’re just talking adult bikes here - the top 5 categories that are sold in our bike shop located in New York. For those of you that have commented that we didn’t mention singlespeed, recumbents, cruisers, gravel, cyclocross, bmx, touring, yadayada… sounds like you already know a lot more about bikes than what this video is intended to cover. We HOPE to have future videos that dig deeper into all the different types of bikes out there!
Thanks for watching!
I am such a huge newb when it comes to bikes..my girl and I want to start bike riding.we like going out to the woods and beaches...what is a good bike for this?
@@zombie5815 Personally I would pick mountain, its best suited for things like that and is a nice, easy ride. Though keep in mind the wide, heavily treaded tires on mountain bikes make them harder (but bearable) to ride on the road, as there is more drag/friction.
Give me addars pl
why won't you invest in mamacharis? They look like the 5th bike, but more versatile for city/urban settings.
@@zombie5815 Watch and understand the video, and you will learn.
*Think of this as a Hummer. They're meant to go through mud, through the woods*
Thank God someone knows what a Hummer is supposed to do.
y e s
a whole lot of 26 people do.
@@RESISTAGE u e s
They're supposed to be in the shop getting fixed and at the gas station getting refilled lol
I had a Hummer 4, they are not made for tough road conditions, let me tell you that. Thats why I am driving a Lexus GX now
00:25 WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUIIIVE
wtf
wtf is that dual sport hybrid 😂😂😂
Thought he was gonna drop the f bomb
PJ Gricalda what do you mean it looks nice
@Nyc Jeff which one ?
I think if the child #3 don't look like the parents it might be adopted lol.
I think the mountain bike cheated on the road bike with a cruiser
Or a human hybrid
@David Skreiner 1 thing you should know david is that not all bikes have a comfort frame back in the day
Comfort hybrid frames even back in the day is designed like this: the top tube and down tube are completely parallel and both tubes curved down making it step through, they made it COMFORTABLE
Well the thing is it is not the common type of bike back then
They commonly use a more normal bike with a top tube parallel to the ground and a down tube inclined but straight so its tall as a road bike or as small as a bmx and can be uncomfy sometimes so they made a more comfy bike frame which they call it "the granny bike" or "mommy bike"
Im sorry but i disagree with you
I think it's the child that's like after the millennial the couch potato version lol
True HAHAHA
FINALLY I find someone who explains things like I’m clueless because I am!! Other guys are always using their bike terms that I find harder to understand so I’m glad he made this video because NO ONE could explain it any better!
I literally spent days trying to figure what bike to buy. CZcams kept giving long and confusing vide. I'm so glad I clicked on your. It was clear easy to understand and short thank you.
Same
But wait theres more!!😁
Like Type of Road bikes,Mountain bikes
So what did you go with
I'm a 66 y/o male that has some arthritis issues now. I love riding a bike whenever possible. An upright seating position means I can look around when riding on city streets avoiding neck strain. Going to the grocery store is a chore without a basket on the back to hold stuff so the step thru design makes getting on and off much easier not to mention having to stop for traffic.Instead of having some "cool" looking bike I prefer one that actually works for my situation. Xcellent tutorial
I was today years old when I learned there are cruisers with front suspension
Go watch my vid on me an daughter at Walmart buying a bike
#sheeshsuppport
#keepworking #weloveyousheesh
weloveyou Sheesh, I highly suggest that you assemble the Walmart bike, due to the fact that Walmart employees don’t really know how to assemble a bike
@@notapleasemember I like how I commented that a year ago, yet you still replied
@@flissfloss915 they weren’t even replying to you tho
I'm so glad I found this, this simple short video helped me out a lot in figuring out what I want. Thank you! ☺️
The use of relatable metaphors to clearly dilineate each kind of bike is genius. You'd be an A1 school teacher. Thank you!!!
wasn't expecting the comfort cruiser. thought for sure a cyclocross was coming out.
I thought a bmx was coming out not the 90’s one
Dual sport was the cyclocross
Gravel bikes are better than cyclcross bikes. fight me
CyclingAddict dual sport looked like a regular hardtail mtb to me
@@philm259 Dual sport is in the hybrid category and more closely related to the mtb parent but you wouldn't actually take it into the woods and jump over rocks, roots and hills. Dual sport can handle dirt trails with light gravel and small roots.
Thanks for the wonderful and easy explanation. Looks to me like the Fitness Hybrid is the bike for most people (mostly commute/on the road + some 'not too rough' off-road biking)
Just wanted to drop a comment and show some appreciation for the clear and straightforward video.
Most people are tight on time these days and as you mentioned, the number of choices can be overwhelming but you summarized things quickly/perfectly.
Really appreciate the info!
Finally someone that broke everything down VERY simply and concise. Great job! This will definitely help me with my decision.
Great job man. You simplified all the types and cleared my doubts.
Sports shops tend to forget about classic city bikes. The kind that come with everything you need, including dynamo lights, mud guards, rack you can fit panniers to, internal gears for low maintenance and a good old kickstand. These tend to be the most practical for commuters, as you can ride them in the rain, without getting dirt all up your back, and they can carry your stuff.
Wow this was so clear, short, and informative. I wish I would’ve seen this sooner, before I purchased a cruiser. I had no idea what I was doing
the first frknnnn time in my life, someone with knowledge explained bikes easier than making my coffee. LOVE U DUDE
Awesome and easy to follow and understand video!! Using layman's terms, that's what we clueless peeps need!! Love it, love the bike family analogy! You're the bike salesman we all need!!! Clear, plain simple terms, using car examples to.compare, just frigging brilliant!! Thank you
I appreciate your clean explanations and bullet point review at the end. I'm super short and am trying to learn on a renter bike, but it's too big for me and it's been so difficult for me to get the hang of it. I think I'm going to buy my own proper fitting bike and continue trying. Thank you for this. ❤️
Have you learned ? What bike are you using atm?
@@mim5759 yes, please come back
Excellent. Nice quick summary for people who walk in bike shops these days & love all the shiny and snazzy styles and features but feel TOTALLY baffled as to how to begin to assess the products and prices! Helpful brief video. Thank you 😊
Dude great video!
Clear quick and concise!
Great analogies!
if I lived near your shop I would purchase from you ASAP.
Now I know exactly what I need when I walk into my local shop.
Thank you so much!
I love theese straightforward tutorials, if a friend would ask me what kind of bike I need, Ill send him/her this video
Thanks man......this video was of great help.......now I'm pretty sure about which bike I should buy.....
I really like your authenticity and the natural way of talking, explaining. I have no questions left, good job!
WOW! Thank you for this short but informative video! You answered all my questions!
u just gave me 30 yrs of simple info in 3 min, thanks! Very helpful
Thank you very much I really appreciate this video. Very helpful for me!
Great video, very helpful and informative. Thanks for taking the time to make it!!!
I loved watching your video. Your comparisons not only made me smile, but understand. Thank you!
Love the analogy man, that is so well understood and am sure anyone can relate.
Dude is not wasting any time. This is a bike, you sit on it, you pedal here, breaks here, GOT IT!! :)
Awesome video! So informative yet kept it so simple and easy to understand.
I appreciate this very simple but clear explanation! I've only recently become very interested in bicycles and am learning about them!
Probably the ONLY video on CZcams which isn't intimidating when it comes to describing what different bikes are like, you deserve many more views/likes. thank you so much.
Out of all the videos I watched that over complicated the types of bikes, your video was simple and to the point. Please make more like these!
Awesome video, best explanation of bike types - thank you!
finally... clarity! thanks!!
Excellent video I’m going to shop for a “Dual Sport” 👌🏿
Very clear and explicit explanation on the various types of bikes
Superb!
Just WOW on the explanation. I’ve watched a few videos and this one is very easy to understand the differences between the bikes. Thank you for making this video.
I feel like, I have a test tomorrow when this guy Explains
now for the five different types of mountain bikes ..
Um. XC, Trail and Downhill, I think there might be more, but I can't remember
TheAwesome Stevo xc trail enduro free ride downhill
I really want to do that video!!
Ian Taplin Fat bike as well.
Cross country?
Love the way you explained in detail every bike! Thank You 🙏🏼, now I know I need the Fitness bike hybrid.
This was by far the best analysis to explain the bike family!!!!! Thank you so much for this!!! Subscribed!
i feel like there should be a sixth one. something that is in the exact center of the dual sport and fitness hybrid bikes. the specialized Sirrus X comp carbon is kinda like what im talking about, just add the specialized seat suspension... kinda... maybe call it the all rounder or jack of all trades bike 😝
BMX
Dirt bike
Downhill bike (Can't go uphill on those, so they don't quite fit into mountain bike category as good as a enduro, xc or trail bike)
Ciclocross bikes
Trial bikes
Fixies
Triathlon bikes
Track bikes
And so on...
Alonsitis Duff that’s why the video is titled “ 5 types of bikes”, all those bikes fall within the 5 categories of bikes beside the BMX bike which would be its own category
Sorry but I disagree. The title says ''THE five types of bike'', not ''five types of bike''. And honestly, you can argue that a dirt bike can be considered a mtb, but a trials bike... A fixie... A cx bike... And don't get me started with Penny-farthing, unicycles, choppper bikes...
Freestyle bike
Lowrider bike
Muscle bike
Cruiser bike
Beach Cruiser bike
etc.
Glad to see the comments! All of the different types you all have mentioned are legitimate bikes in their own right, but we had to draw the line somewhere. For whatever reason, this breakdown of five bikes makes sense to most people and they can branch out from there.
Alonsitis Duff a dirt bike cannot be considered a mountain bicycle, a bicycle needs to be propelled using peddles
Thank you so much. I’ve been shopping for a new bike and was so confused. This was very helpful!
I got back to riding bicycles 2 years ago and this video made things clearer than any sales pitch on showroom floors. You still have to try different types of bikes to find what suits you best and I changed my mind quite a few times along the way. So far my favorite thing to ride is a single speed road hybrid with granny handlebars which I would have never envisioned initially.
Thanks for the video! Really clear and helpful
The second child is what I need, need it for home - work and the location on which I travel has a little bit of a trails on a pavement.
Great quick video. I like it simple and to the point
Absolutely helpful video !! Thank you so much for creating this !! ☺️☺️
i went from a confort to a fitness specialized. Next step im going to a road one.. i just need to get more fit and i will do the jump.
Just had to say... what a great video! Simple informative, easy to watch! Thank you sir!
Thank you for the comment and for watching! I never get tired of the compliments!
Great explanation, I am looking at getting a new bike and you broke it down in a perfect way for someone who doesn't know the first thing about bicycles. Many thanks! 🙏🏽

Mine is the first child!🤣 "I'm not a serious biker but I'd like to get some exercise bike. " that's me..
Great job at clarifying the basic categories. Very helpful.
OMG thank you for your video!! i just want to buy a bike but not sure where to start - your video really helped me!
You should include fixie and bmx
Thought I had a mountain bike but it looks like the fitness hybrid
Your videos are amazing. I just rediscovered my passion.
I just learned how to ride a bike 2 days ago and am looking to buy a new bike since my learning bike I only bought for $40 off of FB Marketplace. The other videos were long and super technical, like a teacher giving all the unnecessary info. I this video went straight to comparing bikes to cars which makes so much sense! This helped so much as a newbie who has no idea about different kinds of bikes. Now I know I want a Comfort hybrid. Thank you so much for this video!!!
I have a mountain bike that I use to ride around my village. It is pretty useful as there is a bump in the road every 5 seconds. And you have to be extremly careful around one point because there is a hole that can fit a smaller foot and it isnt nice when you ride on it as it makes you jump quite high 😅
Now I can just go to a store and ask them to show me the dual sport hybrid instead of awkwardly asking which one I should get and pretending to understand what they’re explaining
Thanks
Excellent video!!! Straight to the point, clear and very informative. Unlike other videos which waste your time with too much talking!
Thanks. You explained bicycles perfectly. Other videos made them very confusing. You simplified it very nicely.
The last bike - should be called the Mailman's Bike.
Your mama's bike.
@@zhongyi7211 I mean, yeah?

Loved the video! Super easy to understand thank you
MTBs are supposed to come in as 2 types: full suspension and hardtails. The one he's shown is a full suspension.
Im joining a bicycle gang so im gonna need a bike to join obviously.
I know I'm late but get either a road bike or a dual sport if you are going for pure exercise
Thank you so much for this video, it was easy to understand! Loved it!!!!!
Thank you for being so clear with no fluff. ❤
interesting my parents bought me a huge mountain bike as my first bike after I learned how to ride when I was 7 and that is all I knew. No wonder my calves and legs are so strong.....
I like the second child best for my needs
Awesome!!
Amazing!

You couldn't get any better than this!!
this is the best description of types of bicycles, that i have seen. well done and thank you.
You should be teaching Physics theories. You would explain those more clearer than the professors.
How about some Finance? czcams.com/video/zOlJ5Z6C7A4/video.html
Actually the mtb married another mtb so they produce an offspring
1 crosscountry
2 enduro
3 downhill.
This is what I was looking for.. Easily understandable for someone with zero knowledge about it and wants to get their first bike.
Thank you!!
You are such a great teacher. You simplified if for a beginner like me. A thousand thanks.
You just missing the famous and well respected Touring Bike....as my favourite bike ever....🤔
What about BMX, trials, fatbike, enduro, e-bike, downhill, or unicycle?
"5 basic"
Ok 1) bmx'es aren't for road racing, they're for stunts 2)fatbike is simply just an obese mountain bike and is efficient for ice and snow 3)e-bikes can be any type of bike featured 4)unicycle is not a bike you can use for daily transport 5) downhill is just a really jacked up/buff mtb like mtb=normal athlete, downhill=bodybuilder 6)trial=uhh.. idk
@@hyakkimarufluff534 I have a road unicycle, use it everyday for transportation. I also have a mountain unicycle that I use for exercise in the woods.

Very simple and accurate explanation for our newbies!
0:24 who else thought he was gonna curse. Also he forgot the most common type of bike, a tandem bicycle
"What the fff-"
Tandems arent even close to the most common type of bike, its between mountain bikes and road bikes. Besides he didnt mention alot of groups (fixed gear, single speed, electric, fat, etc.)
An intellectual would realize that you could have a tandem roadbike, a tandem mountain bike, an electric tandem fatbike, etc. therefore making them not only the most common but the most versatile.
