As a mavs fan, I love d-live and can't wait to see his progress, but he hasn't had a stand out game yet. Wembi and chet definitely has. That's the only reason why he's not getting the pub
They can score. Lively is great for the Mavs, but as a standalone player being compared to Chet and Wemby, he's a level below. But he's good enough to help them win a Championship if Luka and Kyrie can get back to 55-60 pts each night. Not sure if Dallas can keep winning with the points by committee thing they've got going on. Especially if the Wolves beat Denver. That defense is even tougher than the Clippers and OKC PLUS they have 2 big time scorers and 4 guys who can hit 3pt shots in the starting lineup. I don't like that matchup at all....

Kidd is the ultimate game planner, playoffs are all about adjustments and as a former PG he has an advantage as a coach. Also it’s not just the adjusting but if it works cause if you choose wrong like Thunder did in G5 then you have those kind of results.

I know it helps spacing if lively can shoot 3s but honestly he gives us so many 2nd change opportunities in the post. Not always a direct rebound but a bunch of tap outs.
Rookie of the year for this year should have been between Wemby, Chet, Ben Simmons, and Derek Lively. I might have given it to Simmons. Dude has such a high potential ceiling.

Imagine this:
Clutch time vs OKC. 2 scenarios.
1. OKC plans on doubling Luka and just seeing if someone can't get a steal. Luka gets the ball out of the double safely and Lively sprints to the 3 point line like last time with Holmgren following to foul him.
Only this time, the ball is passed to Lively just before Holmgren gets to him to foul and Lively gets into his 3-point shooting motion just before Holmgren fouls him.
That's a free 3 point attempt, a possible 4 point play, and if he bricks the 3, he gets 3 freethrows (which means he can still run the score up if he misses 2.
2. It's Hack-a-Lively time, but Lively is at the top of the key setting a screen. Dort has 4 or 5 fouls (it's the end of the game). Instead of going into the paint where he will be fouled, he participates in a hand-off with Luka. Holmgren has to stay back because he's the help-defender and Dort is fighting over a screen. If Dort fouls Lively or Luka, GOOD, now he's at 5 fouls or out of the game.
But instead of driving into Holmgren, Luka hands off to Lively at the top of the key. Holmgren doesn't have time to get out and contest Lively's 3, and Dort probably isn't expecting this, and even if he was, it will be difficult for him to leave Luka and block Lively without fouling. Lively will get the most uncontested 3 of the season, and if anybody should manage to contest or "Hack-a-Lively" while he's at the top of the key, that's 3 free-throws which also screws up their plans.
***And as a more long-term sidenote... The Mavs have been going "big" a lot... but if Lively can make 3's, we no longer have to limit Lively and Gafford to a combined 48 minutes regulation. If Lively can shoot 3's, we suddenly open up the possibility of playing both at the same time and going mega-turbo-wumbo-big. Imagine Lively and Gafford BOTH being able to play 30 minutes a game. All it requires is Lively being able to play the 4 for 12 minutes a game while Gaff is at the 5. It's entirely doable.
I don't think the goal is to make Gaff and Lively to be shooting bigs. But there might be an occasion or two, if Mavs get to WCF and face the Wolves, that they get open for a while because Gobert is lurking in the paint and the Mavs bigs have to shoot with low shotclock. Kidd wants to make them comfortable doing that
It would be nice if they focus more on the mid-shots, FTs and moving the ball when they get it and rather than standing still and trying to hand over the ball, it would open up a lot of chances.
It could be interesting with DLive being able to shoot 3s, I think I rather have gafford focus on his mid - rim and keep him there.
One practice of shooting 3 balls isnt going to move the needle much on their effectiveness. I remember Powell saying a few years ago coaches had him working on stuff that we seldom see in games. I suspect this is something in line with that. Those two guys put too much pressure on the rim to pull them away from it much. Imho

Yeah, Luka and Kyrie are struggling partly because Maxi isn't there. With Holmgren and Williams just camping under the basket, they don't have to worry about defending a pick and pop. This means Luka and Kyrie are getting crowded in the paint.
Healthy kyrie is playing scared. Luka is going with his players that step up.
I love me some Maxi, just wish he was healthy this season. Gafford, Lively and Kleber we need all healthy for this next round, the versatility between those three should scare everyone, remember Mavs had the best rated D for last 20 games of the season.

The fact that Lively is ONLY TWENTY is incredible. Best thing to happen to Dallas since Luka joined (no disrespect to Kyrie, but he's in his 30s and Lively's potential is almost too good to be true). Imagine Lively and Luka winning a string of championships....

Not just because of his natural talent, but his effort and hustle. Dude is ALWAYS moving and making plays I see veterans miss on the regular. The Mavs best draft pick of all time besides the 2 obvious ones

It's more likely they'll need to hit FTs than hit 3's.
bruh they don't need to practice 3, offensive and defensive rebounds, attack and defend in the paint, alley oop, outboxing, footwork in paint, and passing is their best options not 3.

but seriously, imho we don't need more 3 point shooter going 1/8 in league games, we already have enough specialists doing exactly that on a more frequent level than we like to see. and afaik all players are part of a 3 point shot training routine. so nothing special here.
