Bro, I've searched so many tutorials. Yours is by far the best I've seen. I'm a brand new motorcycle owner/rider and trying to figure things out from scratch. I think I know my problem now. Not only that, but great explanation of details and inner functions. Awesome!
Exactly
Except he is telling you that the starter switch is breaking the hot wire, but it actually breaks the ground.
Thanks Bro,at present dealing with a bit of a nightmare.First, ordered new carburetors, got a 1987 gsxr 250 four, and the new carbs after ultrasonic clean, did not have float needles, swapped the needles out of original carb set, well the seats are different,my intakes filled with fuel, gas everywhere, took the carbs out, changed the float seats, dried the intakes best I could,re-install carbs,no leaks, hit the start button and heard this loud click, turned over a bit then completely quit, getting that clicking at the relay now, will pull plugs and check for hydro lock, like I said, very challenging, however need to thank you, will take time and fix this, you Rock.
It was a very well detailed video thanks for the content!
A good way to think of the voltage and current is with a water system. Voltage is the pressure of the water, like from your water tower in town to your faucet at home. The water pressure is there but the flow to your work is determined by how much you open the valve. So in the case of your starter think of the relay as a valve and the starter as a pump driven by the flow of water, (electric current). Your starter relay as a valve must allow maximum flow, like your faucet at home being all the way open in order to give enough flow to run your starter motor.
🤔😉🤔🎯 Hey I like that example
Sure broo nice
I have a 1996 Suzuki an the start won't stop cranking even wen the key is not in it
Can somebody help me

Great video cody! As always, lots of good info. Keep up the great work your doing!
Dude, you make the best tutorials.
Very easy to understand been watching your videos already fixed 4 of my friends bikes keep up the good work man
That was the best examples believe me I looked thanks bro appreciate it.
I had my theft deterrent alarm box malfunction and intermittent no start condition until I disconnected alarm box. Too much fun. Great video and teaching.
Such a good teacher..... great one buddy. I've never once stopped to think about what's inside a solenoid. So important to know simple stuff like this... it helps massively in understanding and fault diagnosis.
All the best buddy...... Steve.

thank u so much man you make a great difference in peoples lives seriously.
any thoughts on a system with the starter turning, but turning almost slowly, or just spins freely then lags on and off and on
Thank you for sharing your expert knowledge.
Great tech tutorial always willing to Learn new things thanks for the insight into solenoid’s
Excellent explanation 👍🏻👌
Thank you Dr. Cody very much. I'm an engivorated new subscriber thats about to fix and ride my new Ninja ZX9r

Great information, I watched beginning to end!! thanks.
Hi, Great Video !!! thanks a lot from Wales Uk , Gus
Hey bro I enjoy your vedio and as a first timer ..it was well ilerstriated in every way and just like how you want over and over and bean pation with your demonstration..thanks for all your information ❤👍
fantastic video sir. i agree with rest of the commenters, this was hands down some excellent tutorial work on troubleshooting. keep it up, subscribed.
Excellent and fascinating, having problems like you describe , with my cagiva w12 , nightmare bike , been fighting with it for 4 years , never thought of changing the solenoid , sometimes it clicks , and when I tap the starter motor it turns over slowly , have to put a booster on it , to start it ! Will go through the checks like you showed in this video , !
Best explanation ever!
Very helpful!!! thank you!
Very good video, nice job. I have a fuel injected bike and only see a starter relay on the starter diagram. And my bike just clicks when trying to start, I can push start it. I've checked the battery and it is producing the proper voltage. Do you think my starter relay is the problem?
Yeah ill take that starter motor i have a 88 virago 750 . great video thanks!! In subbed now !
Thanks for the tips 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve seen that situation multiple times working on hvac equipment for a living. The voltage travels through the switch (whatever it may be) yet the load (motor or light or whatever) won’t operate so you replace the motor, the load, because it’s getting voltage but not coming on. Then that horrible feeling when the brand new motor won’t start either!😭😱☠️ the contacts inside the switch are still strong enough to send the voltage to the load but NOT strong enough to handle the amperage supplied by the motor or load when it receives the voltage. Weird but true. Wire can become the same way as well. Corrosion builds up on the wire or they weaken through movement and can do the exact same thing. Switches just naturally weaken through the repeated opening and closing of the contacts causing small amounts of damage to them with normal use.
Great video
Excellent.
You really solved my problem.
I'm having problems that's exactly like what you're explaining, If only I could figure out where, what, which wire goes to this and that. Its hard to follow along but I know what you're explaining has something to do with why my bikes not starting only making a clicking noise. I'll just keep watching over and over until I figured it out, you make it look so simple but trying to follow along is somewhat complicated
What about an 81 cb750 dohc that starts fine but I'm not getting sufficient charge into the battery from the alternator I have a cycle x setup with a brand new reg rec and just reloomed the bike the loom runs into the starter solenoid so would it possibly restrict charge if it's faulty
Thank you MD.
just perfect thanks !!!
This video is super helpful in narrowing down my search on what is going on in my 2002 yamaha r1. I bought this bike a couple of weeks ago knowing it needed some work on it but after replacing a couple of parts, which included a new stater relay and replacing the battery, I'm still having issues getting the bike to run. It does exactly what you said, when I click the stater bottom I hear the audible noise and when I hold the bottom down it will start, but as soon as I let go it turns off. This is my first time working on a bike let alone owning one. I would really appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction on how to fix this. I'm trying my best on not having to pay someone to fix things for me for budget reasons and for educational purposes. Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks
Hello Cody I am new to the channel but I love the way you explain things about motorcycles I have never worked on a motorcycle until I get one and the motor was seized so I figured that out and got it unceased But I could not get it to start it cranks over but it will not start I have checked the compression 2 cylinders are very high and one is low at 1:10 the others are 150 & 175 The bike is a 1980 yamoha Yamaha XS850 midnight special and it does not start. I'm thinking maybe the pick up coil but I do not know where it is located at lol So if there is anything you can do to help me get this bike running because it is a beautiful bike I would much appreciate it Thank you for your time And keep up the good work
I had this exact problem and when I hooked up my starter to the battery out of the bike and it fired right up. This told me that I needed a new starter solenoid. Sure enough the bike fired up when I replaced it. Also when I checked the spark plug wires and the coils I found the 3rd cylinder wired was bad and it actually ripped apart when I tried to take it off of the spark plug. I replaced them also.
i have a problem with my recreg ( think) i keep blowing my main 30 A fuses i disconnected the recreg and it started up and ran fine (obviously no charging of the battery) then i plugged it back in (and checked voltage from the negative terminal of the battery and the outer casing of the recreg and it had the battery voltage i am assuming this is my issue the recreg shorting out the system and blowing the fuse? have you seen this issue before or have any tips of further troubleshooting? i tested the recreg and it was getting the appropriate values i think it is working fine other than the outer case shorting do i need to buy a new recreg or could it possibly be another issue?
Thank you

Hey man I hope you can help me out. My bike always turns on but sometimes I have to hold the starter down a bit longer and the start up is kind of weak? Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks
Waw, great my friends👍
Have you had a 2012 honda pcx scooter w150 cc a no crank diagnose
I have a honda elite ch80 having trouble with it since I changed the starter ordered a manual should be in soon
working on a 2002 shadow spirit vt1100c. guy jumped it off with a car now the fuse blows at the solenoid relay. check continuity and nothing. going to change it out is there something i need to look at before i put power to it so i dont blow the new one? i did find that the positive side to bat was semi loose when it took it out. thank you sir
I have a benelli tnt 25, and i think i have a power drain in the 2 wires that come out of the ignition switch, so please tell me, does those 2 wires have current ( read 13.2 volts )...... A plus, when i connect my battery, the dashboard lights up briefly, is this a normal operation of the system, or do i have a short circuit?
Hey thanks for the great video, I wondered if you could offer me some insight. On my bike when I attempt to jump the terminals on the starter solenoid the starter motor doesn't spin and all the electronics on the bike completely shut off and I just have to wait for the lights to randomly turn back on. Any ideas on why that may be? Thanks
I would start by replacing the starter.
Ground of starter switch button to handlebar is real important in some motorcycles. I reconditioned my right switch gear, and rerouted the start button wrong, preventing grounding ……took me ages to work out this was the problem after testing everything else.
as a DIY guy.. I crave for such videos.
I legit have this problem on a Yamaha right now, happened 2 days ago. I got home and thought maybe there is time I can pop to the shop and buy some food. Lo and behold I go back to the carpark and the Bike tried to start a bit with the usually starter whirring sound 1-3 seconds failed to crank. Then after that, press starter and again and nothing. Dash and lights are on but nothing on the starter. Just a click sound when you press the starter button
Replaced the battery still a no go.
I have removed the solenoid/starter relay and waiting for a replacement. I just hope its not the starter :x
One key element I did notice 3-4 days prior to the bike starter not starting the bike is that.
When you press the starter, it usually does the "whirring" sound as it starts the engine.
But the odd thing was that, its something where > You press the starter button > whirring sound occurs> Engine starts > Then 1 - 2 whirring sound occurs just after the engine starts. And I am not pressing the starter button anymore.
So perhaps this was the starter motor going out? Had the bike since 2016 brand new after all...
I have acquired a project bike, which only seems to fire up when I bridge the starter solenoid. What would u say the issue is? ZZR 600, 97 bike. Battery is brand new, just won't start on the button, no noise or clicking at all.
Where are you located at? I'm in Minnesota I've been struggling with my bike. But after watching this last video.i think I can figure it out. With the starter relay. I'm using a relay from a Ford 150 on my gl1100. But I also have a 79 750 Honda. But after all my trouble with my Gold Wing I'm tired of working on another bike.
Thanks. The shop was wrong... you were right... Thanks
I have an issue with a 86 VFR that gives of a loud screeching/whining sound from the starter (pretty sure its the starter) when attempting to start it when cold. It sounds horrible. It does start however, but it needs a few tries. When its warm there are no issues.
Couldn't get my bike started. Watched your video. BOOM, bike starts
I had 12.5 at tge battery the relay would not work.
I tested the starter with 12v iv that worked....
The stop/ start had continuity plus worked.
In trying to start the battery went to 7v...so the battery was inconsistent..
Thx for your help Cody. 🏍
Thanks man, this really helped me trying to diagnose a starting issue im having with my 2012 klx140l. However i still cant figure it out. Battery is charged its a lithium battery, basically what happens , the starter solenoid clicks and sends power to the starter, the starter spins but only for like two seconds and cuts off, then i have to crank again and same things its like short little burst of cranks. Which makes it impossible to start the bike. However, the bike starts and runs fine if i dump the clutch. start Switch is good has good continuity if i hold it on. I tried jumping the solenoid and it has the same effect, starter turns for 1 second cuts off even if i still have the cables jumped. As if something would take all the power away from the circuit. I let go crank again and same cycle all over again. I ordered a new solenoid hopping maybe it overheats inside causing too much resistance but not sure because if i was to bypass the solenoid and jump it, the starter should crank continuously until i let go correct? any help would be greatly appreciated. @TheMotorcycleMD
Hi I found my 2022 Husqvarna fe350 submerged in water. I want to ask how to turn it on.
Is there a key to this?
hey guys ...i hav a hyosung gt 650..it fails to crank with the spark plugs on.and the positive terminal gets really hot..i also burnt the previous battery terminal..however wen i removed the spark plugs out..the engine did crank..my battery is good and so is the solenoid n wiring..could u pls help
Thank you 👍👍
Welcome 👍
I have a question on my 2001 honda shadow vlx 600. I tried to start it and it popped and I lost all power like it blew a fuse. I checked them all i didnt find any that were blown. I had to recharge the battery and It charged just fine I turned the ignition back on and tried it again. It did the exact same thing popped and lost all power. Before this happened the first time I had started the bike 30 seconds earlier and then I stalled it. After that it has been having this issue.
I’ve got a cb750 1991 nighthawk and rebuilt the starter the wiring is fine etc and all it does is spin in the engine but reverse the polarity it turns the engine?
I had to rebuild my 1983 CB650 starter. Not too bad. Some people dont realize if they assemble it into the housing wrong it will spin in the wrong direction.
😂😂 that is a fun lesson
Just recieved a new starter for a kawasaki bayou. After installing it wouldn't start. Wouldn't even try. I started ohm wire's. The starter terminal is ohming to ground. Thought i had a grounding issue, but after removing starter i tried ohming staryer terminal to body of starter,& it's ohming out. Can the starter be fixed, or is it just better to order another one? Thanks
Great 👍
I have a problem with my suzuki boulevard c50t 08 it was running great and wouldn't start one day so I put the charger on it started went for a ride came back home tried to start it wouldn't start had the battery checked the store said it was bad so I bought another battery I checked the voltage it was charged but still dead when I turn the key only the back light comes on and turn signals work but no front lights or dash no horn nothing working in the front l no pump noise checked my fuses connections. So I ordered a new starter seliond relay hope that does it.
Got a Honda shadow 600 died on day. Replaced the battery got it to start up. Now when I try. I hear clicking from the relay. Is that a bad relay ?
Hello, my name is Scott. I’m working on a 2005 Honda shadow 1100. I have replaced it cool the wires spark plugs I rebuild the carburetors was running really great. Everything is fine. I done a good job on it but my parking lights wasn’t working, so I started working on them now it will not start. The neutral light won’t come on the parking lights or not coming on. The blinkers will not work right on the front and it will not start that when I push the starting button, the headlight with, any comments advice?
This is the exact issue that I'm having and I need help laid my bike down and now this is the issue that I'm having.
I was hardwiring a rectifier in and acrced off something and heard a fuse pop, kept on wiring the rectifier, replaced the fuse that popped and now readout has chec and FI is on! Won't prime and won't start! Checked the fuel pump and it does work, checked clutch switch, good, checked kill switch, good! Starter is good! What the hell happened??? It's an 03 Suzuki GSXR750. Thank you for any help or suggestions this is killing me!
Hey man, ive got an indian scout. battery was load tested at shop and deemed good and its a year old. When you press the starter it does about 7 cranks before it stops trying. The power or sound of it doesnt slow or struggle like its a dying battery, its pretty strong it just doesnt start. Low milage bike but 8 years old. Sometimes although rare it does start immediately, but it takes anywhere from 1-3 presses of that start button for it to start most of the time. Im finding it has more trouble starting when its warm. The starter is in a shitty spot to get at and requires the rad to be flushed and removed to access it so if this doesnt sound like a starter issue i dont want to rip the front of the bike off to test it. What are your thoughts on that issue? Thanks
My bike (gsxr750 '95) starts a brand new battery empty in 3 seconds. It feels like the starter has a hard time spinning the engine around and draining the battery. Once the engine runs, it runs quite well
What could this be?
So what do you do if you jump it and it still won't start. Would it be safe to say it's the solenoid motor??
If you jump the relay directly to the battery to test it in isolation and if its good, wont it short circuit the battery? (No load)
Does anyone know how to get a hold of him to see where he is located so I can drop my GL1100 cafe to him? I need some help and I'm confident he can fix it. !!
If my starter solenoid is bad would my light be on when I turn switch on? It’s like my battery is completely removed. No headlight or neutral light on. Thanks.
My Honda Shadow 750 class you could dishion it runs good bun go down the road it dies like there's nothing can you help me
My xtz1200 clicked and didn't turn over a couple of times about a year ago. It healed itself.
This shows up on my feed today just after yesterday's "lab" & "theory" had me with multimeter in hand, cables off, solenoid out & mine did the exact same damn thing! (To the "T"!)
I have seen them where the contacts were making connection, but were so dirty they were just barely making connection. The starter motor would try to spin, but barely. I just jumper across the main terminals and the bike starts right up.
Damn should of watched your video before started working on ny atv. I replaced battery ans starter and nothing. Im replacing celenoid tomorrow
So I bought m bike without a battery bracket and can seem to put it back on can you make a video on batteries and battery bracket ?
It’s a 1998 Honda shadow 1100
I have a TVS 125 hlx motorcycle whose starter tries to turn on but never completely turns the motorcycle on. It just makes a weird sound until the battery is drained of any power. I really love my motorcycle can you please give me any advice?
I have a question. I have a new battery, fully charged at 12.9v. I put in bike reads 12.4. I rev to what I think is 3000rpm(no tach on bike) and voltage goes up. Problem is after a few hours of riding battery dies. Don't know what's going on. I've checked R/R and that's fine. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe battery is sulfates but it's a new battery. Few months old. Maybe was bad batch from factory.
Sounds like R/R but if u did all the tests for it and battery is really charging too then maybe you have parasitic draw somewhere on the bike? Also what kind of battery you have and what kind of charger did you use for the new battery?
yeah, sounds like the reg/rec is faulty. It doesn't regulate the charge from the alternator and boils the battery. You can test it with the multimeter. Good luck. p.s some reg/recs have no heat sink fins on, so they overheat when you're sat in traffic, bad design... I had to upgrade one of mine to one with fins, just have to find a compatible one.
My 83 Honda shadow 500 been sitting for a year.. changed the battery all I got was a click.. a little bang on the selinoid now it cranks but wont turn over.. please help! what do I check next?
Ever figure out the problem mine is doing the same thing
V65 magna. Light dims but no turn over. I jump it and it starts. I think bad solenoid am i right. I have add so I gotta watch your video another 20 times before I understand. Help plz. Love your channel. Im new.
New to your channel. Bin fixin for 20 yrs.
I got a shadow doing the same thing have u figured it out yet
V65 brother here. Mine was running fine and next day won't start. Now I'm down the rabbit hole.
Yours sounded like battery issues.
My starter turned on and wont turn off? 2004 kawasaki klr 650. What should i do???
So the stud coming out of the starter is positive
Replaced the relay and starter motor is making a click sound after the motor has fired up, same thing when you shut it off, a click sound from starter, now have to strip half the bike down just to get at two bolts which are out of reach, so i can get it out to test/replace
I have a real stumper of a problem, actually two but lets tackle them one at a time. If I push the starter button I can hear the relay fire. When this happens its supposed to kill the lights and supply 12 volts to the (green) control wire on the starter giving it the voltage to snap the solenoid down to engage the (heavy) current direct from the battery to the starter motor. When the starter button is pushed, it does not kill the lights as its supposed to do. It does however supply 12 volts to the (green) control wire of the stater but the starter does not fire and it does not turn. I have tested the starter with a jumper wire direct from the battery to the spade lug that has the (green) control wire. The starter fires like a champ, it starts the bike...No problem. I have tested the (green control wire with a volt meter and every time I push the starter button I am seeing 12 volts on the (green) control wire so there is voltage going to that wire when I push the starter button. So, why will the starter turn on the jumper wire and not the (green) control wire. Also, I have the shop manual. The manual clearly shows (2) starter relays!!! One is in the fuse block under the left side cover and the other is under the seat. When I push the starter button on the handle bars, I hear the relay fire that is under the seat. Its a single throw, double pole relays. It's purpose is to carry more current to the (green) control wire for the starter and at the same time disconnect the headlight and dashboard circuit to turn the lights off. This is done so that you are not robbing need power for the start circuit to start the bike. This I fully understand. What I don't understand is why its not killing the lights as its supposed to do but it does put 12 volts on the (green) control wire going to the starter. The other thing I do not understand is what is the second relay under the left cover for. How many damn relays does Harley need to start a bike. I have asked Harley mechanics what is going on and they are clueless....Any ideas....
Okay my 09 Yamaha YZFR1 is having an issue where I hit the start button and the starter cranks and cranks but wont turn the bike on. I cant find a fix for this anywhere. I've bought a new starter relay thinking it was that, going to replace it today and see. I have a brand new fully charged battery. I bridged the solenoid and it continued to crank the starter but to no avail of a startup. If anyones got any ideas or suggestions I'd GREATLY appreciate it because im losing my mind over this
Did you figure it out mine is doing the same?
When your testing resistance you need to keep your fingers off the metal because it’s trying to read resistance through your body
At 10:30 he touches both meter leads and the meter shows his resistance.
Mine clicks as well I know it’s not the selinord cause I just replaced it I know it’s not the batter it’s pretty much the starter cause after I keep pressing the start button eventually it will roll
Over then go back to the same issue I tap the starter with a hammer and it rolls over
I Have The Same Problem Zx10r widow maker
What if you have spark the spark is not strong but engine will not run
Mine was clicking because my valves clearance was toot tight and the motor could not cope. as soon as I free the cams was spnning again
what if you dont hear a click when you hit the start button?
Do not touch the multimeter leads with your fingers. That will cause it to read crazy resistance since you're reading yourself. You might have an open/cut wire, but you might think it's good if you are touching it.
Hello there my friend.i changed the carburetor and the motorcycle still wont start
