SONY SCD-777ES SACD Player. Truly Byzantine design and build. Sadly, does not reliably read SACDs.

  • Not much to say at this stage other than an excellent design and build. I will weigh it later on to see if it is heavier than my Wadia 16, 861 or 581.
Fixed pickup KHS-180. Top cover slides to the right to reveal the mechanism.
Luckily plenty of info in Service Manuals and Service Supplements where some factory modifications are recommended. A lot to digest.
Does not read SACDs. Originally I thought it did read some, but it was only their CD layer.
Capacitors appear to be good, so the laser is a prime suspect now.

She's a beauty, somewhat similar to Pioneer's PD-D9 mark II internally, but the output stage and mech are something else entirely.

Beautiful player, truly outstanding build quality, at least the housing. Never owned one of these, would love to try one, but I would probably get a little annoyed with the notorious slow ToC reading. Takes forever on this and on the SCD-1 compared to the older X7 generation players which usually read any disc instantly.

You get used to it , can't forget the scd1 and 777 (the same transport) were the first sacd players on the market.
I won't part from mine, I use my xa20es and ca9es for casual listening. I love to use my 777es sporadically and sparingly.
It's something truely special to me to see this guy still play with zero issues. The age it is...
      I won't part from mine 😂

Check if the sindle engine has any play ... if it does, it needs bearing replacement. There is a guy in Poland who does those kind of repairs (Retro Audio).

i would just replace the player within if that was an issue, he said about 300...because of the age

2:34 the leaking SMD-bastards from the 90's just like in Philips 900 series?
It looks like million dollars on the outside but the analog section looks quite...mediocre?

Dude you're hacking on a sacd player that was literally the first of its kind. You actually believe you can "see" an analog section and judge it on its quality ?
Ohh boy wait until you see a 25k costing wadia lol

Mad to think that a wiim mini £89 would perform better.

It probably needs a recap of all the small value ones underneath the mech. Get someone good at SMD work to do it

I got her in black and i wont part from it. The dac is outdated so i use an external dac.
That being said as a transport youll be hard pressed finding something build better.
People here.commenting, the scd777 was the first of its kind together with thd scd1
Yes its outdated, naturally! Ever since the cdp101 (worlds first commercially available cd player)
The technology has leaped, you can't stop that. Perhaps understand without, products like the 777 you wouldn't have your cheap cd players sound the way they do.
It inspired better products for less..

I don't know if it's outdated. The best sounding DAC ICs in my book were Burr-Brown PCM-1704 and PCM-1702. Sony DACs never gained popularity outside their brand or respect from pundits. But I know couple of people whose opinion I value, who consider them to be as good as any.
