FIVE MINUTES WITH The Yamaha CS01 Battery Powered Monosynth

Chris from @BOOelectric (Battery Operated Orchestra) treats us to some quality time with the Yamaha CS01 - a much loved battery powered monosynth that was a first synth for many budding synthesists.
Chris has modified one of his two CS synths, adding a resonance modification to the 2 Pole Low pass filter.
Its not pleasant, but it works....
The CS01 was also recently immortalized in software by Babyaudio.com as the BA-01.

I still have mines, grandfather bought it for me in 1982 :)
My prediction, in 2000 our cars can fly.
I know....where did it all go wrong.
@@gnosis6073 I hate to say I told you so, but it's because when the foresighted popsters of the 80s "opened the door" with gold lamè suits, society didn't step through. If it had, by 2000 we would all be wearing one-piece silver suits with diagonal zippers, have the flying cars and be enjoying meals in pill form. If only we could turn back time...😁
In the early 90's I was in a postpunk band with future members of Phantom Limbs. One of the vocalists played a CS01 through a guitar amp on a couple songs. I also had a beer bottle on a cymbal stand in my drum set. At the time I hated it, because I was an anti-keyboard punk rocker. Now I'd love to find one of these, esp the MKII!
my first synth back in the day. would always play "the forest " constantly
I always look forward to five minutes with Chris. Thanks Sonic State for turning me onto BOO!
The first synth I played (1982) fond memories.
Nice work Chris, I particularly enjoyed the saw sound and the PWM. I used mine to mimic the CS80 in Chariots of fire. The CS01 a battery operated orchestra...well almost. Not bad for 1 oscillator.
Please check the brand new and awesome VST recreatrion of the CS01: the BA-1 by Baby Audio. Fantastic VST emulation!
Cool demo! Great little classic.
Great sounds from a little synth. I still want one! That's a surprisingly faithful rendition of the percussion from Being Boiled.
Sounds lovely... takes me back.
Little beast that could. Ps you can use a Y cable ts/ts-trs to control cv and gate externally from the breath input
the written narration is the most brittish ass shit I've ever since and I love it
wow, new synth from yamaha!! when will it be available in stores?:D😮😳🤯
well it was new.... 40 years ago🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@norman7571 yeah... fake news... ☺
Available at your local time machine 🕰
Bill and Ted will be back soon..... ask them a favour😂
Great little synth. I sample the bejesus out of mine and always get something usable. Not seen much action since I got the BA-1 though 😳
Great sound and catchy playing FTW
it's a lovely little synth that I missed out some very cheap ones years back. I imagine they're much more pricey now.
the little brother of the SH-101
this is great!
The only actual synth you could buy from Argos!
Knew nothing about this until BA-1 came along. Such a great synth in an unassuming package
Most people do not know the Power this _Sympth-Tool-Osus_ holds within it.
Got one on my shelf ,do the mod on the resonance pot on the pcb board :)
Somebody has to sample the first beat it's such a vibe
I have the MKII version - with MIDI. The MIDI mod makes it so much more useful.
What's interesting about these is that about five years ago there was next to nothing on CZcams regarding them. In the last two or so years I've started to see an uptick in videos featuring them - but mostly the MKI version. It seems the MKII version is rare as hen's teeth. They're sort of Yamaha's version of the SH-101. I dare say I think they sound better than the SH-101 (and that's from a former SH-101 owner). The filter on the MKII version is bonkers and you can get some proper gritty screaming acid lines out of it, along with basses, rip roaring leads, percussion and FX sounds.
May i ask which midi Kit you got? I am searching for a Midi or cv Kit for my cs, but it seems like a dead end
I swapped mine wite a dj who also worked in a fastfoodstand ten meters from my apartment for free sausagerolls and burgers for a year 😂. My first synth, bought in 1984 at 13 years of age. Miss it sometimes though.
We need that RS7000
Legendary
I still have mine with original box and breath controller all in good working condition.
Awesome .. Just Found mine after it went missing in a move we did 4 years ago !! .. A buddy trade it for a MXR Distortion Pedal back in the 80's .. Not sure if it was a fair trade ?
I remember seeing these in Mo key Business and thinking they were little-more than the Casio VLTone. Shamefully, I never even demoed one. Well, that was my loss. Along with the synthi I turned down for 100 quid. Ahh, youthful foolishness, eh? Sometimes I wish Now-Me could have been near Then-Me to offer a few words of admonishment and advice 😂
Ouch! A Synthi for 100 Quid? That's the kind of thing that'd haunt you to the grave. I feel your pain, sir.
listen Sababa 5 most the synth lead solos from CS01
Bought one 6mths ago... !!
To me it always sounded like some of the waveforms are analog and some are digital on this synth.
Ngl I like my cute cs01 more than my sh01a
I think Chick Corea played one plus breath controller on Letterman.
Hmm, maybe a second version, looks a little different. Anyway, findable on CZcams.
@@MichaelRohaly Thanks, I'm gonna go watch that now!
@@MichaelRohaly I think you're right that it's a MkII, which has "Yamaha" printed across the internal speaker cover. The MkII also has a slider for the filter resonance instead of the weird high/low switch.
wondering why Yamaha didn’t reissue it along with the reface stuff?
I'm a bit confused here. Always thought this little keyboard has got digital oscilators. Not VCOs nor DCOs but just digital ones. Can anyone confirm?
They're analogue oscillators, not digital... I do, however, have a feeling they might be DCOs, not VCOs as the front panel says.
@@BOOelectric I swear some of the waveforms are digital, not all...but some...I am probably insane though.
I just did a little checking on the sound source... apparently it's a YM10150 chip, which is a clock, an oscillator, and it handles all the modulation too. I'm a little out of my depth tbh, but I'm pretty sure that makes it a DCO, though It says VCO on the box and the manual. It does sound extremely stable, and perhaps a little cold. I will continue my hunt for evidence.
Never heard of it! Sounds nice, especially the "zero-resale-value" one 😀 Also nice melodies you play^^
Where are the sound patches located?
There aren't any. You need to get practised at modifying the parameters on the fly, using the knobs and sliders. I have a breath controller for mine. Recommended. I'm a wind instrument player anyway, so controlling expression using breath is intuitive for me.
Not a toy!
Finally another sensible video instead of that awful boring stuff from some sort of audio equipment fair where they blatantly push a non-available piece of junk. Bleh! More Friday Fun, Five Minutes With and _Independent_ Review video's please.
Personally, I like videos that present upcoming music hardware products that I may or may not buy in the future. I expect lots of other people do, too. If you don't like them, don't watch them? Moaning about them on an unrelated video seems a bit pointless to me.
@@onetwothreefourfivesix I think it's a waste of time, a waste of energy and a waste of talent from the SonicState people to make vids at fairs. And a waste of time for SonicState's subscribers. And given the fact that all youtubers *beg* us, in an increasingly embarrassing way, for a subscription that might just be of importance to 'm. If you think that's wining and moaning: yes. It broody well is. And moaning about this in one of the ten-thousand SoSta video's from a fair is of no use if one doesn't give an example of a video that one *doe* like. Or don't enthuse them to make more vids like so and so.
You go and waste your time on 10.000 non-informative shaky vids from fairs, I'll go and watch SoSta's serious reviews and inspiring demo's.
@@meneerjansen00 Maybe just watch something else then and chill out a bit? You seem agitated.
Nice but no midi or cv is too big a stretch
Looks like your CS was shot
I just open mine up and adjust the trim pot as required.
