HARD LIFE on the HARD - EP 76 SAILING LIFE ON JUPITER

- After the eventual success of our haulout... now the HARD work begins. We have a long list of jobs which we need to attend to. We start on pulling the prop shafts, replacing cutlass bearings. Then draining and opening the fuel tanks for a clean up of an old DIESEL BUG infection.

ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

IMHO, that looked like a lot of play on that cutless bearing, definitely time to replace! Good call.
Cheers Joe
Best sailing channel on CZcams
Best comment today!
Oh the fun of being covered in diesel. Doesn't matter how careful you are when draining a tank, this almost always happens.
Yeah Stephen... For once I smelled like a real man!
I like this video. Shows technical details of boat repairs. Everytime i see the boat i'm reminded how good it looks. Wished they offered more aluminum cat designs.
I reckon they will become more available... There a bit of demand now!
They now offer a Mumby 48 build in Harvey bay QLD in alloy, at different build stages, now just saving my dollars to get one, fingers crossed 🤞
Great video cheers
Cheers mate.
Good video!
Cheers Edward
Cheers for another great video guys. Love your work.
Cheers Bob
That's not hot that's home, you got the ocean and the bay to keep you cool.
We normally do Chilly... Not much breeze up on the hard tho.
@@SailingLifeonJupiter surprising down there... It's like the roaring forties most of the time.
Nice work Jamie, that diesel bug is real trouble if it breaks free & starts blocking the system, be gone diesel bug 🐛
Anks mate...
Great video but now I have to wait until next week to see how you clean the tanks, how do you expect me to sleep this week Jamie?🙃
Ooo... Hooked ya Walter... See ya next week!
Whaaaa??? You can't leave up hanging like that!
As for the seal on your stern tube, it's a good idea that you replaced it. With the amount of play you had in the old cutlass bearing, there was probably some wear on that seal. With the prop shaft running straighter, you might have ended up with a leak.
You might be right Marcel.
Great episode!! Keep rolling along!! Thanks for sharing!! 👍👍👏👏⛵⛵
Will do TW.
I dunno Jamie, I'd have changed that anode for good measure. It may last another year, but with all this work you've got organized you shouldn't have to haul again for two or three and now you will in just one year only for the anode. I've seen crazy things happen to anodes, like gone in 6 months from new because some idiot in a big steel trawler is pumping stray current into the marina and its eating every anode on every boat around it in a 60 meter radius.
Nah its fine Luke... We don't use marinas and we do keep a good check on anodes... Kinda vital for a metal boat... Worse case I can change the anode in water.
Man ! You have to Re think that fuel tank access. But at least you can get to it....and you are not bent over in an uncomfortable position...
Yeah dingo it's actually really good access being able to get my arm in there.... Most boat fuel tanks have zero access. Cheers
Thanks for bringing up diesel bug... another thing I will keep in mind if I purchase a used boat. 👏🏻 👾
It is very common... Most people don't know, coz they can't see into the tank!
Great job on your “baby” Jamie…safe travels always!!
Cheers Mike
Good job Jamie and Princes 👍👍👍
Tks Alfred
@@SailingLifeonJupiter is’nt it great that we are so far apart, but can communicate in minutes 😀😀😀
On My First Boat the guy cleaned his diesel tank and then painted it inside.
Ah yeah...so long as it doesn't flake off it should be fine.
excellent videos, pity that some do not allow me to access the translation into Spanish ,greetings
Thanks Duvan... The Spanish subtitles not working?
I am happy to see you do not have the "sail drives" I call them Junk drives. Do you use or have you tried the Prop speed anti foul?
Never tried it... I hear its good... Expensive tho.
That little 'wood plug (nope). If strapped for parts, at least paint the wood (epoxy) or wrap it in aluminum foil then glue that in place.
It was Jim... Dripping with epoxy
Was the drive shaft loose when the boat was first launched? Has it got looser overtime.
I'm on my 3rd set of Cutlass bearings.. They last 300-500hrs.
👍
Cheers Unni
3m-5200 sticks uhmwp
Ah well... Plywood for now. Cheers
Do you know what antifoul they are putting on?
Sure do David... I bought Seahawk colorkote... The most expensive AF paint I've ever bought! I usually use much cheaper ones, but have never been happy with them... See how this goes.
Should you use a different type of zinc for the fresh water systems on the "Great Loop" ?
That zinc would be called magnesium (Magnesum in american english?). However corrosion is not a huge problem in fresh water.
Im certainly no expert on fresh water fittings.... But I don't think there's any need to change...fresh water is less "active" than salt.
Cheers Joe
jumping the gun here (me) did you clean the diesle you took out before reusing?
Stay tuned!
okay? ii didn't jup the gun lol. Your episode ended well before any of that !!
Cheers
Hello sorry what is the purpose of anodes (what material, number) I can imagine that it is for corrosion with aluminum ???
aluminum anodes for aluminum
That's right JL B...Aluminium is low down on the galvanic scale which means that it if a different metal was in the salt water (prop/shaft) then the aluminum would be the one to galvanically corrode.... We don't want that!... So we use sacrificial anodes which are lower on the galvanic scale... Zinc or Magnesium.
@@SailingLifeonJupiter actually you should use aluminum anodes
@@ysesq aluminum in an aluminum circuit is not an anode. You need something that dissolves easier than aluminum as an anode.
(Sailing Life on Jupiter got it absolutely right there.)
@@grimfpv292 aluminum anodes are doped to dissolve easier than aluminum Aluminum anode alloy provides more protection and lasts longer than zinc. It will continue to work in freshwater and is safe for use in salt water. Aluminum is the only anode that is safe for all applications. they are built specifically to protect aluminum hulls.
They're crummy jobs....I'm glad I'm not doing it, sorry. ... Cheers to you ...
Somebody's got ta do it... Cheers Laurie
