- Xtreme hog hunter Randy Brown is frequently asked questions about the dogs he uses on his hog hunts. Each dog of his is specially trained for their individual hunting tasks, whether it be tracking a hog or holding it down. In this week's episode of Team Wild's Xtreme Hoggers, Randy introduces you to the Enon Plantation's hog hunting dogs, and shows you the kit that they use to track them when they're baying those problem porkers.

What breed is tank ?
Tank is a breed know as the American bulldog.
As bulldig historian and author Diane Jessup writes in one of her books:
"A breed that, until the late 1980s, was virtually unheard of, this breed was made from existing lines of large Pit bulldogs during the eighties to attract the novice Pit bulldog owner who thought "bigger is better." Pit bulldogs which survived and developed along unique lines in secluded Southern states. Some lines of American bulldog are Pit Bulls crossed with any of a half dozen large Mastiff-type breeds."
Erick Caoudal
I did google it. That is from a book about Pit bulldogs. Pit bulldog is a type of dog. It is not a breed. Many different breeds can be considered a Pit bulldog. Even though the APBT and American bulldog are two different breeds, they are very similar in genetics, function, and breed purpose, because APBTs have been used to create the American bulldog. For example, the Scott line--the American bulldog strain said to be the standard for American bulldogs--has even more APBT added to it for more agility, speed, and working ability. Scott line comes from breeding Johnson American bulldogs with APBTs.
Erick Caoudal
Yes, very similar to the breed which created the American bulldog - the APBT. From "What is an American Pit Bull Terrier":
"The American Pit Bull Terrier was bred as an all-around farm dog, working the farms as a cattle/hog dog. Some chose to turn their talents into the sport of pit-fighting. The breed’s tenacity and accompanying strength are unmatched in the canine world. Some proponents of the breed argue that this breed is the original bulldog of the past. Old prints and woodcarvings show reason to believe this. They show dogs that look exactly like the breed today, doing things the dog is still capable of doing." From another site about the American Pit Bull Terrier it says that:
"Farmers and ranchers used their APBTs for protection, as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, and to drive livestock."
Erick Caoudal
Since it is well-documented that the APBT predates the American bulldog, it makes perfect sense why, with the help of a variety of larger mastiff breeds and the working bull baiting dog of England we know today as the APBT, the American bulldog would be another bulldog breed which helped out on farms and hunting large game. And both strains of American bulldog do, in fact, have APBT blood in them. From the first bulkier Johnson American bulldog, to the leaner, more agile, and work-ready Scott line (which has even more APBT added to it for the agility which real working bulldogs are known for).
Erick Caoudal
But, even being two separate breeds, the American bulldog is a Pit bulldog breed. Definition of Pit Bull or Pit bulldog:
"The term Pit Bull is a generic term used to describe dogs with similar physical characteristics. Usually a Pit Bull is considered one of several breeds including the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, American bulldog, Dogo Argentino, or any mix thereof."
I do not agree with the term Pit Bull or Pit bulldog. The real term for dogs like the APBT and American bulldog is simply bulldog. The term bulldog is the same as saying Pit Bull, but bulldog is the term that came first to describe large game working dogs with certain traits that made them good working dogs, like strong gripping jaws, well-defined musculature, and a sturdy yet agile frame.
