It's hard to separate that concept from simply republishing the same thing under a more recognized brand name. It's the quickest route to profit, and underpins the examples in this video. If the copies added something new, trimmed the fat, or simply re-envisioned the content, the only tangible difference is that the same content was produced by one but added to the success of another. The infinite recursion argument from this video is the only thing that gives a plagiarist the excuse of "well, you didn't invent that either, and so you should be happy that I made it popular, and thus, validated your effort."

I'm glad you commented! I always want to hear how the people in the country of origin pronounce names we are familiar with, but may not have learned correctly.
I can't remember the name of the museum where most of his work is (do you know the name?), it was not large, but my niece was just overwhelmed, she is an artist and loved everything there. She also said the people were very nice and friendly (As a 6 year old, her mom married a man who loved to travel a great deal, and she went around the world with them until she was in her late teens. I loved hearing her views on where they went, she had an incredible gift for talking to anyone, and as a beautiful little girl from California, always attracted a lot of attention).
I am convinced if children could travel for a couple of years around the planet, they would become much better citizens of the world. The benefits would create interactive nations and understanding, instead of the ignorant xenophobia so prevalent today. I realize how expensive it would be, but I still think it would be great.

If you write as a profession (or dedicated hobby), I would suggest that you don't focus so much on the story pattern, but more on how it is carried out and add your own personal spice to the main factors that drive the story forward. A good writer can turn any common-day occurance into an event worthy of a reader's highest attention. As such, it's not the occurance that is important, it's how you tell the story about it.

I too stumble on upon this problem quite often. Usually, I just continue to break down my idea (if I find out its already used) into smaller chunks, build upon those and then try and match it togheter. Seeing if I can create something "original". Of course, building on top of a concept is what I belive is the best possible thing, as it grants a completely new perspective.

I think a better video title would have been: Your Brain Can't Comprehend A Blank Slate.
I suspect what is happening is that the struggle to find something "completely original" is what's at issue, resulting in a short circuiting and your subconscious brain scuppering you. I've got no expertise in this matter at all, but it might be that taking fiction and rewriting it as many ways as you can could break you out of the lull, teaching your subconscious that "originality" can't exist in a void.

This is a sobering and much needed reality check for us creators working hard to make our own thing. But in a way, it's kind of a blessing that everything is (not completely) new - that everything is a variation of something before, not only (like you said) because it builds on what'd been before, but also because of how we view and enjoy things. Let me explain:
Reading books, or walking into movies or tv shows, we enjoy surprises, but there are certain core elements that remain the same (and we expect them to) - tropes and story structure. Everything runs on a basic core system like mods in a video game, and these skeletal mythos and conventions are older than sin. It's how you dress them up that makes them interesting. Too many subversions and people actually get turned off. (I think this explain why so many people didn't like the ending of GOT, but I digress).
People all have an insatiably favorite genre or genres that we enjoy, and we keep going back to them throughout our lives. If nothing was made because it was simply a variation of something before it, we would have NONE of the favorites we grew up with. Everyone would be re-reading or re-binging the same story for years on end until we croak, and that's just boring. Variation means that there are other similar shows and stories that we can enjoy equally (or sometimes, even more so) even after finishing our favorite series. This process continues indefinitely. It's dizzying to think about, but we do it all the time. 🤷

Sometimes an artist has an idea they think is so good, it must have been something they had seen or heard from another artist and just forgot the origin of. The opposite of "cryptomnesia". Paul McCartney had the idea for the song Blackbird in a dream and when he woke up he thought it was a song he had heard somewhere before. Despite his best efforts to find the original work, he eventually gave up and pitched the song at his band mates. It was an original work afterall.

Great video, thanks for the upload!! - Although I have to add that *Christopher Booker might not be the best source of information,* as his book "The Seven Basic Plots" was (also) heavily critizised. For example: tragedy is a "genre" and not a plot in itself - it's far too broadly defined for that and a gazillion of widely different plots would fall into that category without any shared caracteristics other than a tragic plot development.

your comment is irrelevant, as Thoughty² talks about artistic creation (writing, music, films, painting etc)
Einstein & Hawking were scientists. In their fields you can have an original, never seen before idea, but then it goes through a determined process of 1: hypothesis 2: validation by experiment or calculation 3: cross checking and repeating the experiments, before publishing as scientific facts. (that does not prevent plagiarism in scince, though)
      ...
and for Edison : we need to stop glorifying him, as he was mostly a thief! He had a lot of people working in his labs and companies, but often times he took their invention or ideas, and then marketed it publicly as his own personal genius! And on top of that, he used shady business practisses, lies and smear campains against his scientific or business competitors ! (Westinghouse, Tesla) Just google about his involvement in the horrific death of "Topsy" the elephant and you will understand !

@@domundtgregor6683 I think i did not made this a little clear
I meant "Are we joke to u" As Einstien and Hawking made the most Significant Contribution in their Fields and Their theory was orginal
and "I know" Part As in Edison admiting that he was a Crdit Hog.Yes, he was brilliant But also an Asshole and Thief.

    "Underwater basket weaving"
    NOFX - Anarchy Camp
A phrase that's been used since the 50's
And all this talk about how there are but a few different stories, but not a single mention of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth as described in Hero With a Thousand Faces.

I can’t bring myself to enjoy this video because I’ve had many bizarre ideas that I’ve never seen before in any other work, and some that are so outlandish they might have never been thought of before. He says it’s impossible but I’d be willing to bet based off of some of the books I’ve read that for some people, original ideas are a tangible possibility. Just recently I had this experience watching Annihilation for the first time, and as far as I know it’s the first and only movie / story to execute that particular idea. Original content does exist and people can have original ideas, it’s just very difficult and the odds are against you most of the time, but it can be done.
