We can all agree that execution is highly important in storytelling, and saying that it all boils down to concept can sound misguided. However, what Truby is getting at is that, without a truly captivating premise, no one will have the interest to pick up your story. Without a hooky or engaging concept, no one will actually read your execution, no matter how amazing it may be.
In this video, I have three goals want to guide you through a simple and practical process for how you can create a strong original concept which demands your audience’s attention. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Thanks for not parating the "Nothing is original" take. The channel is a massive breath of fresh air in what often feels like a lot of repetitive wisdom.
my sister's boyfriend was trying to explain to me how all stories are derived from Shakespeare
You're probably misinterpreting the nothing is original take
I hate that too but it is actually true. When we think it's original it's because we are not informed that it has been done in some medium already. This is so common that I never even check if something I came up with already exist I already know it does, now it's all about putting your own twist to it.

A screenwriting course a while back said the absolute WORST thing you should say in a pitch meeting is you have an original idea. :)
Yeah I've heard similar, and not having taken any classes. All ideas, no matter how original you may think they are, are really derivatives of other IP. You may have a unique vision for it, or a twist that no one would see coming, or a fresh spin, but it's not an original idea. It'll borrow components and beats from other IP no matter how hard you try to avoid that. Just tell the story you want to tell, as original as you feel it may be, and let an audience/critic determine how good it is.
But yeah, never start a chat with "I have this original idea for..." It won't go over well.
Insightful video but agree the narration and audio quality is a little rough. Also Jurassic Park was written by Michael Crichton, seems pedantic but if you're going to reference someone's work you need to get their name right. Otherwise great vid and excited to see the channel evolve.
Thank you I came here to say the same thing.
I agree. Some nice ideas but as soon as I heard “Michael CHRISTIAN” I couldn’t take it seriously anymore. Still, I’ll pass this along to some of my struggling writing students.
@@atroyz isnt this foolishness on your part though? So if an african mispronounces einstein's name while stating one of his theory's you'd stop taking them seriously?
No "seems"....its very pedantic
@@afrosymphony8207 good point. I guess I didn't mean the pronunciation as much as the confusion. There is an actor/screenwriter named Michael Christian as well, and it just seemed surprising, for something so well-researched to get that wrong. But I liked a lot of this video as well and wish we had more original films.
What a great simplification of Concept and Conflict in the Story!Thank You !
Agreed
New year new look.
This is what I've been looking for! I've been having trouble with this idea/concept for a few months now, going back and forth between stories trying to see if one can go this way or another way! Thank you!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love that thumbnail, good God
I often keep getting ideas regarding unique concepts. Thanks to you, now i can add insights as well as instincts to my ideas. Thank you so much.
what a breath of fresh air in a world full of convoluted advices! thanks!
This video has given me some insight on how to fix my script idea, so that's definitely worth a like!
Thank you so much, I want to write compelling stories and take people on adventures. I have been struggling to figure out how to come up with a concept and this was perfect, much more informational and instructive than what I've seen you might not see this comment but you have earned my subscription 5 times over. I will definitely continue to watch this series.
Combining seemingly (or impossible) to combine elements is also called the Bisociation Engine. (Taught to me by Corey Mandell)
as a pre-service teacher, this video essay is structurally sound from start to finish
Incredible. I was just looking for a video on this exact topic. This was very helpful.
🥰 Brilliant. A simple, clear and easy-to-understand way to create original concepts with two superb examples. Thank you! 🤩
Thank you very much for the high quality videos, this channel is one of the best channels for screenwriters, Thank you ❤
Brilliant video! Totally looking forward to more videos on concept.
Loved how you concluded this video.
Solid content and a welcome reminder to stay focused on the things that matter.
Great video. Very helpful.
this is unbelievable. this is amazing and practical. this is refreshing.
Great video! But the audio quality's a bit off.
I wasn't looking for it, but i needed it.
Good video! Learned something more about conceptualisation and writing. Thanx!
This is one of the most educational videos I've watched. Thanks
Very cool video! Thanks for making it.
Kept rewriting my premise for years…thanks
I love this video and the concept
Nice Alberto! Love the video.
This is a golden content. Thank you!
On a less abstract level one of my favorite ideas for this is to take two or more stories and make them the same story. So for instance I had a concept for a TTRPG character several years ago where me the the dungeon master decided to look at the story of the prince of a conquered kingdom and the hero's deafening the evil sorcerer king but viewed as the aftermath
.
Ratatouille is an excellent example because I could never stomach that movie 🤣
AWESOME LECTURE
This is soo good! And so valuable! Thank you!
This is very very helpful, it's now crystal clear what I need to focus on to create that initial seed / concept for my story.
First video of the year, happy to have you new narrator! Would like to see the sound quality addressed a bit, but otherwise excited to see where TOP is going to go
Second video
@Mr. Executive omg thank god you corrected me, I cant believe I was Publicly WRONG on the internet OMG
Incredible video. This is really good advice.
im so glad i came across this video !!
Im not fully understanding step 3, can you discuss that step a little more or show me where I can learn more about that?
Fantastic video!
thanks man
This was a super helpful video!
Great stuff, thank you Tyler and the team
Top bloke.
Thanks, that's awesome help.
Michael Crichton is pronounced "cry-ton"
…rhymes with 👉frighten 😎
I looked to see if I had to be the one to point that out. 😅 Thanks.
Très bonne vidéo. Très utile. Merci.
When John truby writes a winner himself, I will listen to him.
Just, thank you.
Great video 😄🙏
thanks, really helpful.
Thank you
Thank you all very much
ive had a lot of trouble with this thanks lol
This helps a ton
Thank you 👍
One Love ✊🏿
It's a good framework but maybe more for analysing movies than writing them? Just a thought. Would be great if you could make a video with a few examples of it being used to develop original story ideas.
fight club is also a book and this movie is made from that but this movies is so good
I guess the most common philosophical concept is "good versus bad", like in most Westerns. To have different philosophical concepts than just "good and bad", makes for a more interesting story.
Cool video. Now if only you can explain how progess, nature, corporate life, rebellion, fantasy, reality, natural ineptitude, greatness, forget past and remember past are all philosophical BELIEFS. How are they anyone's BELIEF SYSTEM, beliefs which are genuinely held and affect how a person lives their life?
Thanks 💛
Can you explain the difference between a premise and a concept? Thanks for all.
I’m “it all makes sense now”ing so hard right now
2:21 “unpractical” is not a word. It’s impractical.
it's Michael Crichton [krai tn] and not Michael Christen
What would you guys say is philosophical conflict in Lord of the Rings?
(I'm still learning so I wish to hear your opinions)
I wish you were my English teacher
you teaches about real literature and real film, not spending 3 year on learning TEAL
I would say eternal sunshine is less "forgeet past vs remember past" and more "past vs present"
is there really a prof that the writer started with the idea of a the philosophical conflict? I read the short story fight club was build on and in my humble opinion this approach can be found, but it does not seem as the first step. However the video suggest that the philosophical conflicts provides the foundation for any further writing.
Yeah I’m thinking the same thing, it’s like something it missing each time they make these types of videos
jurrastic park is more like natural vs unnatural and fight club is more like conformity vs rebellion
This video told me quite a bit.
Wait a minute, that doesn't sound like Tyler 🤔
He is a member of the TOP Development team. His name is Alberto.
@@petercarmack4867 he's cool too
In the last few years of films, Tenet might have the best concept. A bit confusing but still a great concept.
Time travel + Spy movie
Dinosaurs are untamable because we never got the chance to train them
Let’s see you create an original story pitch with these analytical tools on this channel, bub! I argue that it cannot be done. It’s true that you should isolate & clarify your Controlling Idea and externalize it through your story. But that’s not really how stories come to us.
The writer of Jurassic Park, Michael Christian???? Dude!
That's an original take on how to pronounce his name!
phyloZophical conflict, Michael CrEECHton
A + B = Concept
Philozophical
Nice video. Would be untested in how you protect your scripts from being stolen when you send them out.
You did not talk about Truman show
Where’s Tyler lol
I’m watching this video as I read about Cocaine Bear.
Hey aren’t Fight Club and Jurassic Park based on bo-
Don't let netflix know you used this they'll just cancel anything original #saveinsidejob
I didn't know that dinosaurs are extinct
isnt this just dialectics and a simplified hegel system exploration? it works nonetheless!
Love the concept of the re-brand. Not really a fan of the narration in this particular video. It's a little disengaging. The craft of the Voice over should be as respected as the writer. Especially in an explainer as well scripted and thought out as this one.
watch at 1.25x
The Truman show was not an original concept; it was taken from a twilight zone episode.
Lol I thought Tyler Mowerie had a cold, his voice sounds odd
Sorry, but Is Jurassic park a high concept movie or were you being sarcastic?
Has anyone seen Prometheus? This is what I thought of when hearing originality
Michael Christian????
Michael Christian?
Also not the art of creation the act of creation.
Your information is great but you needed to do some fact checking in editing. You mispronounced Michael Crichton's name. That is too big of an error not to fix.
philoZophically
Just an input, I think you should try talking a bit faster
They are NOT archaeologists!
