The problem with Brazil is that South America is isolated and surrounded by Spanish Speaking countries. Brazil's basic education is pretty good when it comes to math, geography, history but not much emphasis on foreign language. When I was in High School, English classes were once a week for only 1 hour. Most people that want to learn English had to pay for private school which generally wasn't that good either. I think the new generation will be much better when it comes to English and other languages due to the internet.
Brazil borders Spanish countries, but the population does not live on the border, but more towards the middle and coast

I believe you will be able to find more people who speak English in Sao Paulo rather then other states. But we Brazilians love to welcome foreigners so I hope you have a nice trip no matter which state you choose

@@ulyssesguimaraes3820 yes, because of school teaching, o que eu aprendi de inglês foi estudando em casa, as escolas so ensinam a gramática do inglês, nem a falácia eles ensinam, que é um dos mais importantes.
As a brazillian, I think a lot of people will understand english if you speak slowly. And if you try to get information from a group they will direct you to the most fluent person around. But a LOT of brazillians speak english with a very thick accent (f.i, people tend to add an "ee" sound after consonants and before "s", as in Starbucks = EeStarBuckees)
Less then 5% of Brazilian population speaks English, so come prepared
sou brasileira, tenho a impressão de que muitas pessoas sabem falar um pouco de inglês, mas tem MUITA vergonha - quando fui á China achei bem similar a reação das pessoas.. por outro lado, na India, se a pessoa sabe falar o pouquinho de inglês que for, ela vai tentar falar contigo, mesmo na zona rural.
já na Italia, fiquei com a impressão de que as pessoas não tem vergonha, elas até sabem falar, mas não estão afim, até os mais jovens tem preguiça de falar e conviver com estrangeiros que não falam italiano.
Aqui tem uma cultura de ridicularizar quem não fala inglês quase como um nativo. Nós precisamos entender que ter sotaque não tem problema algum, entre outras coisas
One guy in the video estimated that 4 out of 10 brazilians speak english. The other one estimated that it was 1 out of 10. I'm brazilian myself, and in my personal experience, I'd say that only 2 or 3% of brazilians can speak good english. Bear in my mind that this video was recorded in a bookstore (which is a place mostly visited by people who like studying/reading), and even then, less than 50% of the brazilians interviewed could speak english.
I think in a country as big as Brazil anytime you generalize is a bit tricky. I feel in big cities younger people speak English more than older folks. So as a country you may be right but it depends where you are as well. Thoughts?

Do not generalize. Most of the young population of the country (since 2000s) know how to, at least, write and read English.

Jovens são os que mais tem chance de saber inglês, porque a gente consome muito conteúdo estrangeiro. Por exemplo, conteúdos coreanos é mais provável de achar tradução em inglês do que em português.
Eu aprendi inglês sozinha quando era criança, só porque eu era curiosa 😅 eu não tinha a intenção de aprender. Mas inglês é bem fácil, uma língua bem intuitiva.

Eu acho muito interessante como o tom da voz muda quando se troca de idioma. Em alguns momentos parece até que há uma certa mudança na personalidade.
Aqui em África tem um ditado que diz: "aprender uma nova língua é adquirir uma nova alma" sksksksks

Eu também sinto isso quando mudo o idioma, muda tudo em mim, me incomoda bastante, mas não vejo outras pessoas preocupadas com isso. Já é difícil conhecer uma pessoa, conhecer em outro idioma é mais complicado, porque não é a mesma pessoa do idioma nativo.

Certíssimo, nunca fiz curso de inglês, sempre me esforcei pra aprender sozinha, e hoje consigo me comunicar muito bem em inglês!
Estou feliz que este vídeo tenha sido recomendado por mim porque sou dos Estados Unidos e sou quase fluente em espanhol (minha mãe é da América do Sul) e estou aprendendo principalmente o português do Brasil agora (às vezes estudo indonésio e crioulo haitiano, mas raramente outros idiomas).

Eu aprendo inglês e sou fluente em espanhol e estou ouvindo áudios em italiano e francês mesmo sem entender muita coisa; para acostumar meu ouvido. Em Copacabana no Rio de Janeiro os moradores de lá, todos falam inglês.

Vou dizer o seguinte, o Brasil está isolado no idioma português aqui na América do Sul. Todos os países vizinhos falam espanhol.
Aqui na minha opinião a gente deveria aprender inglês e espanhol desde o primeiro ano do ensino fundamental.

as a brazilian, i think many of us learn at school but don't practice, so we usually say "i understand, but i can't really speak", and i believe we don't always have the confidence to speak even if we do have a good level

I am from São Paulo and I speak English fluently since I was 9, self taught, but now I speak 7 languages in total. It is very rare, unfortunately, to find Brazilians who really do speak English fluently, let alone other languages.

I am quite surprised to see that you went to a book store and you managed to find only 2 people who could hold a english conversation easily. I am Brazilian myself and I come from a low income family I had not the opportunity to study abroad, however as I am graduated from foreign trade, english is my closest friend. I have encountered people who lived in UK for 3 years and i didnt reach fluency somehow.
It's because they just hang out with Brazilians.
@Ananda D'Aquino Are there a lot of foreigners in Sao Paulo Brazil? I'm an American who has learned Spanish; when I'm done with Spanish I plan to learn Brazilian Portuguese. I want to live in Brazil and the fact so many Europeans are there makes it seem even cooler.
@@vivaeuropa yes! There are a lot of foreigners in São Paulo capital. Just head to the upscale neighborhoods and you will see a ton. I was working out at the gym a few weeks back and I encountered a Russian girl.
I'm pretty positive there're more than two that could speak a good deal of english, tho.
@@alfredoneto452 Actually the "result" was kinda accurated... We have like 220 million people here in Brazil and less than 2 million can speak english properly! I don't speak as well, i only can read or write in english! Don't try to talk in english to me or you will also feel bad for me😅

Ceará, Belo Horizonte e Rio tem mais pessoas fluentes em inglês do que São Paulo. Creio que não só porque tem mais turistas, mas a educação por lá é melhor

É maravilhoso aprender línguas novas. As línguas que nos fazem sair da zona de conforto são por exemplo as línguas de sinais. Contudo, são mais fáceis para quem tem dificuldade em aprender línguas orais.

I'm originally from Argentina so my 1st language is Spanish but I've been living in Brazil since 2010 so I also speak Portuguese. Working in multinational corporations allowed me to become fluent in English as well and since I love German and Japanese I've been studying them too but I'm still far from being fluent in either of them.
eu não me considerava fluente em inglês e não entendia o por quê mesmo que estivesse estudando a gramatica a quase 8 anos, tanto do ingles como do espanhol, então a uns meses atrás eu fui morar fora do país e alguma coisa desbloqueou em mim, o que me faltava era confiança em falar a lingua, não me importar se tava pronunciando corretamente, mas sim se eu estava sendo compreendido da forma que queria me expressar, em menos de 1 mês com todo o conhecimento que tinha já estava falando perfeitamente inglês e espanhol, sem sotaque e agora to aprendendo turco, pois, estou na turquia, ucraniano porque minha namorada é ucraniana e me ensina diariamente e italiano que é uma ponte mais curta ao romeno.

I think most of those from 80-90-00 can at least understand english most of the time, since we grew up, with movies, series and games that didnt had subs so we just kinda learned, of course not all from those decades, since we need to put in count, the family and social background, the early on activities and etc

As a brazillian it's really sad that we don't use english as our second language and learning new languages feel lonely because you don't have anyone to speak to. Luckily internet came and we can speak online but it's not the same feeling as talking to someone close to you.
I'm starting german with youtube videos and soon some books but I know it's going to take more time then it should be because I'm doing it alone.

Out of my many, many travels, including Brazil multiple times, Brazil is probably the hardest to get by not speaking the language of the land. Of course, the USA is another one, except English just happens to be the global lingua franca... ;)
