He has written so many songs that were hits for other people before he started recoding them himself..He's been doing it from the 50's. There are videos of him from that time. You should listen to "blue eyes crying in the rain", you'll love it.

When we lose Willy, it is going to be a sad, sad day. Thanks for reacting to Willy. One of the greatest country and western singer/songwriters and probably the biggest proponent of weed in history. It was always headline news when Willy's tour bus would get stopped by the cops on the highway (no pun intended) and he'd get busted for possession. (This was before laws had loosened up over weed) News stations would be filming when Willy was released from the cop shop and Willy always walked out with a big ole grin on his face basically saying, "Til next time, guys."....and there were a lot of next times. lol Take care and be well, guys. Peace.

Always on My Mind" is a ballad written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James, first released by Gwen McCrae (as "You Were Always on My Mind") in 1972. Brenda Lee also released a version in 1972. The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both the country and western and pop categories.
AllMusic lists over 300 recorded releases of the song in versions by dozens of performers.[1] While Lee's version stalled at number 45 on the US country chart in 1972, other performers reached the top 20 in the United States and elsewhere with their own versions: Elvis Presley in 1972; John Wesley Ryles in 1979; Willie Nelson's Grammy Award-winning version in 1982; and Pet Shop Boys in 1987.

I first saw Willie Nelson in 1971 when I was waiting for a job to open up in Brownsville,Tx. My wife and I were staying in San Antonio and there was a local radio station that would announce whenever Willie Nelson and his band were going to give a free concert ar the Helotes general store about 30 minutes away. During the 4 years we were in Texas we saw Willie at least 8 times with each being better than the previous one. He always treated everyone great, rich, poor, white black or brown. What a great and talented guy. Salt of the earth.

When I lived in Dallas my mother in law who worked for a big wig downtown, got given $1500 tickets to go to a charity event in Fort Worth, at Billy Bobs. Willie Nelson performed, BJ Thomas, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and there were others, all of the old Cowboys were there, Lee Roy Jordan, Ed, Too Tall Jones etc. I didn't realize that the tickets were right on the stage, and there was a dinner served and all of the people that performed came and sat at our table, including Willie. I was a little star struck, so I didn't say much, but Willie was soft spoken and seemed like a genuine guy. His music was great in person, and BJ Thomas' voice was so pure and perfect. It was a memorable night.

One of the things that really sets Willie apart is his phrasing. Listen to his tests, the time that he holds notes for, the changes in pitch. He does all these without upsetting the time signature or the key of a song. I do not know of any other singer who does all those things. Put all that together with his unique voice and you get magic. Something else that is often unnoticed is his range. He makes everything sound so easy and effortless that you don't even realize how wide a range he's covered. I didn't notice it until I was singing along one day and found that I had bottomed out on my range. Willie still sounded like he'd never dropped below a deep tenor, yet unnoticed he'd eased down to bass.

My Dad was a huge Willie fan, probably because he met him when they were both in the Air Force back in the 50’s. The last concert that my parents went to before he died was to see Willie. My mother now can’t hear Willie without crying.

Love Willie Nelson!! Thank you for reacting to this one. You should try Whiskey River, On the Road Again, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Georgia on my Mind, and his duets. My favorite duets are Mommas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, Luckenbach, Texas, Pancho & Lefty, Beer for my Horses. Also, he collaborated with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson on the Highwaymen which is amazing.

"Crazy" was written and preformed by Willie Nelson before Patsy Cline sung it.
Patsy made "Crazy" her song and Willie loved/loves Patsy's version.

"Crazy" is his song done by Patsy Cline. And to your list I would add "Funny How Time Slips Away" which was said to be written the same week as "Crazy" in 1962. I would also love a reaction to "Red-Headed Stranger". You can see a much younger Willie without a beard perform it live here: czcams.com/video/OWOEfE22wow/video.html

    Hey you all,
Willie is in his 70's and still working. He is on tour now - The Outlaw Music Festival.. You two will LOVE this! He is mellow and smooth! You two's statement about how it sounds like it is studio. Is one of the ways I determine the great ones. Well Willie is better than great. He has written so much wonderful music.
