Sometimes you forget how emotional this show is
Rick is a broken man. He cares about his family more than anything even though her doesn't show it. It's only because he's seen it all, he's lost everything that meant anything. So, when it comes to love he pretends like he's not attached so that when he loses them again it won't hurt as much. He can't escape the pain, the sorrow, the helplessness that he felt. He couldn't save those that mattered the most to him. After that he sought temporary relief for his pain, constant drinking, partying, nonsense adventures. The Rickest Rick is the one who never wanted to be one.
Your last line hit hard. The "most" of something never wanted to be that thing. Just like the person who's praised as a war hero never sought for war again.

My father passed 2 months ago at 59 from NHL. He was the smartest and angriest person I've ever and will ever probably ever know. He had plans to change how we drive, how to solve climate change etc. I feel like the more intellgent you are the less empathy you have. Even dying in my house angriest look on his face as he passed I couldn't help but hold back the tears until his skin went cold and he had no pulse. I never wanted to show weakness.
