How to Change a Headlight Bulb on a Saab 9-3 - HID Xenon Bulb Removal and Replacement

Another project for my 2004 Saab 9-3 Arc Convertible, this time I'm changing the passenger side headlight bulb. In this video I'll show you how to remove the HID Xenon bulb and replace it with a new one. The bulb I chose is a Sylvania HID Xenon D2S 35 watt, costs $99 per bulb but boy is it worth it! It projects a strong beam of clean, beautiful white light.
To change the headlight bulb only takes about 5 minutes, and while it's a bit tricky the first time anyone can do it.

Other year variations have much more difficult wire clips on their low beams.
Great video but please keep in mind that the 2008 and later models of the 9-3 have a very different (and more simple) system.
Great video. Had to go out and check my 2005 Aero as I saw another video that said take the bumper off. Good to see my SAAB has the same set up. So now I know how to swap the bulb if it goes out in the future. Thanks.
Glad it helped. There was no way I was going to take the bumper off! Though some people do. Even taking the airbox off isn't necessary, though it helps as well. So essentially I did it the simplest but also the most finicky way, much patience required, haha.

Great video on the detail in such a tight space.. I have a 95 and a vid had me remove bumper last time, don’t want to do that again! So hoping the clips and turns are all the same…
👍 excellent, clear & concise!...large handed fellows may have an issue, so get wifey or your neighborhood kid to do it while you sip a cold beverage in the shade!..it will have to be a cheap beer though, at $99 for the bulb!...ouch!

I just got a 2005 ARC convertible with 89k on it, I might be a pain in the ass because the person I bought it from has done some rigging work like they rigged the immobilizer and other stuff, and the shop who did the Valve gasket fired the guy who did my diagnostic, which he told me that would fix the P0300 code, I've had 6 Saabs so I knew he was wrong, because I did the plugs and Ignition Coil Packs, and there was oil in the bay of cylinder 3, which I would have had a 2nd code of P0303, he told me to get new spark plugs? and I got the recommended plugs and packs from the Saab forum and was also told, there would be no reason to change the plugs again? 2 days later the light came back on, a 4 days ago my SID said the low beam was out, so I popped the hood, and the aluminum coil pack engine cover was lifted up an inch in the rear right-hand side were the chords come into the bay, So there going to have to pay for any damage done in that area because they took it apart, but it was bent so fast and violently it left stress marks...once the engine is sound I can get the driver's side hydraulic cylinder replaced.
Geez sorry to hear all this, a lot going on. Sounds like you've got the expertise to get it sorted, and I think it's great that you're refurbishing the car to get it back to excellent condition and keep it on the road for years to come.

thanks! My 2003 9-3 was infuriatingly difficult to get the baLLAST properly positioned. Why? I did not realize you need to unplug the ballast before attaching to the bulb!
FYI, you have Xenon headlights and just replaced a Xenon bulb with another Xenon bulb. A halogen bulb does not have an igniter.
Ah, that is very good to know, thank you. Oddly enough the old bulbs (which I have sitting right in front of me) say halogen on them, even though they look identical to the new Xenon bulbs. That's why I assumed they were halogen. Weird!

The ones in the video were the only brand my auto parts store carried, but if you check Pep Boys or Rock Auto or Amazon I think there was a cheaper brand option, but not 100% sure.

I’m don’t offhand, and I sold my Saab so I can’t go measure unfortunately. Center caps are usually 2.5 inches in diameter though.
