Cheaper and more environmentally friendly solar cells

  • In countries like Germany and Italy, 5 percent of all electricity already comes from solar cells. But for an even broader breakthrough, even more efficient and inexpensive solar cells are required. To reduce the production cost and facilitate large-scale production, Charlotte Platzer Björkman at Uppsala University will make thin-film solar cells out of completely new materials as a Wallenberg Academy Fellow.

Where can thin film solar cells be purchased?

Wonder where solar cells will be in five years.

This is very cool but from my LIMITED research into the manufacturing of the photovoltaic cells is that the process is toxic to the environment in countries that are not highly regulated. How can I be certain that the solar cells that I purchase are a CLEAN and environmentally safe source of energy?

Some food for thought::: there are subsidies in place on fossil fuels. Even more so than on renewables the effect is a distortion

Could we also combine solar cells with lithium batteries? So that the panel creates electricity and stores it as well, up to a certain capacity?
If you could combine the two in a cheap way that could be truly revolutionary.

uhm It would be prone to defects...its probably better to store a battery in a appropriated place...it must be a easily damage prone item.

The average home, could be powered by solar and wind only, about 50-70% of the time. Unless alarge AC unit and washer dryer is used, a small solar system and batteries in the 20kwh range would be about enough per person, in a single home, each additional person would require about 5-10 kwh more battery, with solar water heating, for water and home heat, will make the home system more efficient. A 15 kw inverter, with 40 kwh battery, could allow off grid living upto 70-80% of the time, the large loads can be grid powered, reducing the need for coal burning plants, with solar farms further away can possibly have sun when the homes do not, the home battery can supply power when the solar farm does not poroduce, it can be a bit complex, but is possible, we must make the effort, a off grid home, with the grid for backup is possible partial answer, more hydroelectric, will help things also, with any surplus power used to pump store water for later hydro electric power, it is complex, but we must make the effort, it's easy to sit here and say do this or that!

Can someone explain to me? Maybe I'm missing something. I'm not being negative or facetious. *How is harnessing solar renewable?* In order to harness the sun's energy, we have to build panels from resources found on earth. The video discusses uses copper and zinc. Even though copper is recycled, the more panels we build, the more we will have to mine. Not to mention the structure of the panels - metal, glass, plastic etc. So, is this industry "renewable?"

I think the concept is more to transform our energy away from fossil fuels. As to the precious metal issue blue origin and SpaceX are trying to solve that issue with making space travel much cheaper and thus open up mining in space.

Nice Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Schallingora Computer Reconstruction Scheme (search on google)? It is a good one of a kind guide for saving money on your electric bill using this simple technology minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my GF at last got excellent success with it.

Well done! Solar IS cheaper than fossil fuels, now (see U.A.E. projects). And, it will only get cheaper. It's less than 2 years after this video was posted. :)
