I am working in acrylics doing my first Labrador painting. I am primarily a watercolorist but acrylics seemed best for a black dog and the many shades. My question is do you use a medium with acrylics to thin them so they flow better off your brush or just water?

So very helpful. I am working on a dog "portrait" which I haven't done before. I have a poor photo to work from. I spent so much time focusing on the eye that I completely forgot to paint around the eye before putting in details. This helped me see what's happening around the eye as well as within the eye. Using cerulean is a terrific idea - very few things are pure white. Also, I love the formula to mix black. I will try yours. I usually use ultramarine and burnt sienna or transparent red oxide. Really helpful!! Thank you!!

Lysa, I'm so sorry to bug you about this, but can you tell me which acrylic paint colors you used? You stated the colors you used for the black and your reflection. Blue was smart when you think about hidden veins. But what colors is the eye itself? And is the lower reflection ochre?
Hi Jennifer, you’re not bugging me! I don’t remember the exact colors I used as it was so long ago but I’ll copy and paste my response from a similar question below. The colors I use change depending on my reference photo. But my most used colors are burnt umber, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, cerulean blue, cadmium yellow medium, and titanium white. In this particular painting I also used a tiny bit of alizarin crimson mixed in with the blue and white to paint the sclera, but normally the whites of the eyes on dogs aren’t visible, especially from a distance. Also I’m pretty sure the lower reflection is cadmium yellow. But if you choose not to use cadmium containing paint, hansa yellow or lemon yellow would work as well. I hope this helps!

I use a blending brush, also called a mop brush for blending. U can find them in any art store😊

Good point! Smaller eyes can be easier or more challenging depending on the quality of your reference photo. I shall try to include covering that in one of my upcoming videos. Thanks for watching ❤
