    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

    Wow! I'm thinking 17th century baroque style. How pets should be portrayed! Certainly helps me work through my own painting!

    Your drawing talent is spot on! Then you add darks and lights that you adjust till they are perfect.....the eyes are phenomenal. You are such a great artist.

    You're a wonderful painter, and also seem to have a special gift for dogs. I hope you keep them coming! So many of us are struggling to paint dogs while wanting to paint dogs more than anything else.

    Love your tutorials. When I can't fall asleep I often watch a painting video because most are soooooo boring but you move quickly and get to the point. Love that. A douple of things that would help would be to know your support and whether it was acrylic or oil primed and when you are painting over dry vs. wet paint. Thanks so much. I joined as a Patreon too :-)

    I LOVE your loose style! I would love to achieve that with soft pastels! I just keep overworking by rubbing in etc. and then seem to lose the contrast between lights and darks. Need to learn to make a mark and leave it alone. I also paint with watercolours. Again, need to learn to put paint down and stop overworking! Pity you only paint with oils.

    Chris, a couple of months ago I started watching your videos to pick up a few tips and tricks. Firstly, I'm a sketcher (arguably) not a painter. I've always wanted to paint my dog so chose this as my subject. Unfortunately my dog is mostly black so picked a difficult subject for a first subject. I'm really struggling with texture. The original sketch was good enough for my guidelines but once I've started applying the paint I'm losing something but not sure what to do. It's starting to lean towards a cartoonish appearance. I appreciate without seeing it there's probably little advice you can give but I'm gonna throw this out there anyway.
    With or without any advice on it, I'd like to say thanks for doing these videos. I've learned more in your videos than I learned in 5 years at school. Thanks, Chris 👍

      Glad you're liking the channel! Pet portraits can be tough with fur and texture. Sometimes less is more. See the big shapes and chunks of hair. I plan on making another pet portrait. video soon.

    How long did it take you to paint this?
    Did you take breaks to let the paint dry? Or is it allaprima?

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach  Před 4 lety +3

      Ricardo Büchner it took about two days painting. (3-4 hours per day) I never let the paint dry fully but it dried enough from day one to day 2 to be able to build the paint up to where I wanted.
