Montana National Guard leadership recently became aware that one of their Recruiting posters included a background image that appears to show members of the German Army. You know, that bad ones in WWII. Not a good look when the purpose of this campaign was to bring in recruits from veteran families. The intent was to showcase the generations of service within veteran families, but the chosen banner made people wonder which side grandpa fought for.

My dad ended up as the commander of the American Legion Post in his town a few years before he died. I was down visiting him about '92 and he had told me about their 50th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. After the events and dinner, etc. several sat around the bar and they started taking turns saying where they were when Pearl Harbor happened.
They all had stories but one of their members, called "Fritz" (decorated Korean war veteran), hadn't been quiet. They kept asking him and he waved it off multiple times and finally they cajoled him into answering, "Where were you Fritz?" Dad said he kind of looked sheepish and quietly said, "With Rommel in the Afrika Corps." 😂

One of our local football teams made a commemorative jersey for ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corp) day to sell to their fans. When they put it on the site, they instantly got a lot of hate. They had put American army service men on the jersey, not Australian.
They tried to blame an Army base saying that they had worked with them to do the images, but when they Army base was asked by the press, they said they had never even been consulted. Then someone from the rugby team admitted that they had lied about the consult when that news came about, but by that stage, the damage was done. Really upset a lot of Rugby fans and vets.

Veterans Day in elementary school. My grandfather fought for the RAF in WWII so I was sharing a picture of him in his pilot uniform. The next kid also had a grandfather who fought in WWII as a pilot, he showed a picture of his grandfather next to his plane. Little me and the rest of us didn’t think anything of the cross on the side. The teacher noticed it and didn’t say anything. I ran into the teacher again when I was in middle school and somehow we got on that topic of my grandfather being in WWII, and I said the kid after me’s grandfather was also a pilot in WWII. She said, “oh yeah, remember how the plane he showed had a cross?” I said yeah after a second. She then told me it was the *other* side’s plane and the kid was of German origin according to his parents…

When I was in the Corps back in the 80s, one of my squadmates had a miltary photo of his grandfather wearing his dress uniform hanging up in his wall locker. Mind you, that wasn't something anyone would be really concerned about as many of us serving then had fathers or grandfathers that had served in the US military. The only problem was this guy's grandfather had served in the Waffen-SS during World War 2. Since we still lived in squadbays at the time, _everyone_ in the platoon, including the officers, saw this picture. This guy got razzed for the picture, but he never took it down.

And to think that nowadays, they won't even let you on base with a tiny Confederate battle flag sticker on your car. Your story reminded me of a time when I was stationed in Germany in the 2000s (I was prior Marine myself), and got a German girlfriend. Germany is (or was, don't know if it's changed since then) remarkable because they did not allow ANY depictions of nawtsi symbology on anything, not even plastic aircraft models. They were COMPLETELY ignorant of German history between 1933-1945. Anyway one day we were talking about our family and my girlfriend said "hey, I have pictures of mein grandfather, he wore uniforms just like you do", went to a drawer and pulled out this stack of old photos. She showed them to me, remarking about how handsome he looked in his uniform. And sure enough, they appeared to be prewar circa 1934-35 judging by the uniform variants, of her grandfather and associates in the black overcoat Algemeine-SS uniforms. They must have had very low membership numbers. I smiled politely, saying "that's so cool!" She had absolutely no idea. That's what denial of history does.

Though vile ethically, that's not treason.
      Regarding Ukraine, however:
When your government arms and funds a country that openly has your country's citizens on a kill-list, then are you ruled by domestic enemies?
      Obvious answer, isn't it?

"The poster was created by the Montana Army National Guard. The intent of the poster was to show our tradition of multi-generation service. Command Sgt. Maj. Lawrence DeBoo is shown holding a picture of his grandfather, veteran Louis DeBoo. In searching for a historical image for the background of the poster, the creator found an Adobe Stock photo. During the approval process, the Recruiting team did not recognize the German-style uniforms and equipment."
