More About "It's Not About Fear":
A nervous Lena goes over to James' for a date. There, while cooking dinner, the two flirt lightly, and James considers reaching for her hand... Until he feels something over his shoulder. The now familiar presence of a dark creature waiting in the shadows. His confidence cracked a little, he goes over to the end of the room and turns on the light, a temporary fix to make it go away before Lena notices.
While they are having dinner, Lena goes on the offense again and a simple touching of his leg triggers another appearance by the creature. Feeling himself succomb to panic, James makes up an excuse to leave the room.
The creature follows him into the kitchen, where he starts to hyperventilate and lose grounding. Lena, aware that something is going on, comes to find him, dispelling the creature's oppressive presence. As she comforts him, he blurts out that something is "Always there", and points towards the creature. Unphased, Lena takes him back into the living room, where she points to another creature lurking in the shadows and says "There's mine".
Reassured, James attempts to explain the traumatic event that happened to him, but as it proves too distressing for him, Lena stops him and suggests they just calm down together for the rest of the evening. We leave them as they eat ice cream together, smiling, with both monsters lurking over their shoulders, not as threatening as they once were.

The moment she said 'he didn't wait for me to say yes - ' I instantly knew what they were.
And when he said he can't remember what she looks like, alluding to how young he must have been - it broke my heart.

I like that we get to see the perspective of both genders and how they find confort in each other because they both can understand what the other went through. Especially the part where he sees the hand of his abuser (AKA his monster's hand) in the girls hand when she puts on his leg, I can't imagine how hard must be for an SA victim to engage in sexual activity again. I love that they both understand how is like and can be slow in their relationship, I think it's a beautiful example of survivors of such a monstruous thing.

@@shamirabbas7706I’ve also experienced SA at a young age and can relate to the man from the video. There’s no universal experience as anyone who’s been through trauma processes and reacts to it differently. For me, I often find that my brain won’t allow me to recall/experience things that are related to what happened. That can also include making it different to do things that some would be perceive as positive (such as going on a date) due to fears that are associated with my trauma. It can feel terrifying and in some cases has led me to have panic attacks. The film did a great job of visualizing the fear and showcasing the emotional toll trauma (especially unresolved) can take on a person

This is an amazing short film that represents the trauma, flashbacks and lasting effects that sexual assault can have on a person. It was very well written and thought out.
    - From the creature following James home.
    - James washing the same parts of his body multiple times because he feels "dirty".
    - Lena worrying if her outfit is too revealing or provocative.
    - The creature trying to emerge from the closet as Lena was getting ready, (thoughts from the past were haunting her, she was worried the same thing will happen to her again, but she quickly shut those thoughts down [represented by her closing the door and walking away])
    - Both James and Lena kind of being nervous to be alone in the presence of someone of the opposite sex.
    - James drinking to calm his nerves, meanwhile Lena is apprehensive to drink because she wants to keep her whits about her.
    - When James mentions "last time" it throws Lena off guard and she becomes deep in thought for a second, then she's firm with James about limiting her drinking.
    - The creature haunting James when he is getting a little too close to Lena.
    - The creature being in a small dark room, it seems to scare James even more (this leads me to believe his assault could've happened in a small dark room because she went away as soon as he turned the light on)
    - When Lena zoned out while James was talking about meditating, zoning out like that can happen a lot after a traumatic event.
    - When Lena touched James' thigh but instead saw the hand of the monster (the literal monster of a woman who assaulted him), and then she shushed him when he started to panic. Then the she-monster began approaching him (something that leads me to believe he was assaulted as a child/when he was young by someone older than him and possibly in a position of authority)
    - James then leaves to get himself a drink to calm himself.
    - Lena then begins to realize that both her and James have gone through similar traumatic experiences.
    - Lena then shows James the creature haunting her. He has a blindfold on, which to me can mean a few things. She never was able to look him in the eye because she was scared, or he never looked her in the eye because he didn't see her as anything more than a warm body. A piece of meat if you will. It could also mean both. He was also wearing a suit, not "looking the part" for a rapist. But looks are very deceiving. Most of the time, they don't look the part, so sometimes people don't believe the victim because the assaulter has the halo effect.
    - James then reveals that he doesn't remember how his assaulter looks and how he doesn't remember her name, hence the reason she is a silhouette. Another factor that leads me to believe his assault happened when he was young.
    - James became increasingly upset when trying to remember the past, Lena then reminded him that his trauma and his story will still be there when he is ready to talk about it, and that he doesn't need to explain right now. (Another detail from the director that I really liked, traumatic events can cause memory loss of the event itself, but also being haunted by the memories for a long time, often times, the rest of your life)
    - Lena then asked for his consent to hold his hand, to make him feel a bit more at ease. James' breathing began to slow to a normal rate and Lena reassured him that they would do things on their own terms, at their own pace.
    - They then sat together in the light, on the couch, looking much more at ease and having a better understanding of each other, all the while the creatures that haunt them lurk in the nearby shadows.
(This is just my interpretation of the film, the directors could've been different, but this is my perspective as someone who has been sexually assaulted.)
I'm honestly disappointed at how many people missed the point entirely. This isn't about anxiety or being haunted by past partners. Did you even watch the film if you can come to that conclusion? There are so many important details that were overlooked.
This is the type of film you need to watch twice to truly appreciate the value of it. A job very well done by the director and the crew.

      @Buff-Skeleton Před 5 měsíci +8

Your analysis is superb! Really helps bring out some of the details I'd missed.
Additionally, I'd give folks who had a different interpretation a little more credit. Everyone has a different experience in life, and they'll see different things in any given work of art. So there will be other interpretations, even those that aren't necessarily in line with what was intended by the creator. This is clearly about SA, but it could be -- to other people -- very resonant of other things that reflect their own lived experiences, too.
The key point I took home was that we don't have to suffer from past traumas alone (whatever those traumas may be), and that kindness and empathy are the best ways to defeat our inner demons. That's a message I think can reach a really wide audience, and I hope it does!

    • @clementjochem

Over the year or so of the festival run, a number of people I've shown this film to had completely different interpretation. Some saw it being about their inner demons, anxiety in general and someone even asked me if it was about this brazilian ghost myth!
Frankly, once a piece of art is sent out into the world, it does not belong to the artist anymore. However people relate to it, I am more than happy.

This has to be one of the best I've seen on this channel so far! In it's own way of course!
I love how her Haunting Stain is still so human and realistic, because she can remember him way better, how his demonic eyes are blinded and he's sitting down.
Yet his has grown into this horror figure, standing close, following everywhere, still reaching out. It tells us he's trying to run away - in vain. All of the times. Thus becoming the true horror figure it is now, not resembling a human anymore, underlining how helpless he must have felt and hinting at a young age (because his Horror Stain is also portrayed as taller than him) or at least a very vulnerable one where he couldn't stand up. And look at the creepy smile. Holy shit. It must have been terrifying. My heart is aching.
I really like how they give each other a safe space by listening to and being empathic with each other. I hope it will work out fine for them in the imaginative movie-universe.
    Also, great acting!

I like writing relationships where people learn to talk to each other. It's a difficult thing, and not portrayed well in film/tv very often. It's often cheesy and forced, whereas in real life trying to express yourself to your partner can be messy and difficult

Due to physical and mental abuse that's been in my life since a young age and all through my life, I turned to drugs and alcohol around 11. I discovered a numbness through heroin and valium around age 19 like no other so after 20+ years of using, I have another demon to try fighting but it's a losing battle.
Everyone needs a shoulder to lean on and an ear to vent to but not all of us like to talk about it or to burden others. Don't try struggling alone. Speak up.
Excellent depiction of trauma, anxiety and not being able to get over that hurt but learning to live with it.

@brotatochimp Thanks, hun. It's a bittersweet support system. Mum's my best friend but she thinks I stopped using years ago. Seeing how much my addiction made her age and the hell it put her through has made me keep my relapse quiet from her. I was so skinny she'd cried a few times I'd visited her at work or gone home black and blue after fighting with my partner. She lost sleep waiting for the cops to knock on the door to tell her I was dead. I was popping so much valium, oxycodone etc and doing heroin that I can't remember things separately...they blur together or are forgotten altogether.
I've been with my partner for 30 years now but his hatred of himself after seeing his marks on me has helped him gain control of his temper. He still obv gets a certain way when angry but is able to walk away and it's very rarely he ever needs to. We only had violence when using speed on top of other drugs. We both want to get away from drugs altogether and better our lives before we get too much older. He's more determined than me though so I guess I'll have to strengthen my thought process.
Sorry to give you a long answer but it's hard to explain the situation in fewer words. I greatly appreciate your kind words and hope you're doing really well 💕.
Edit - I should add that I have supportive friends but due to my severe lack of confidence and self-esteem, I rarely see anybody and lock myself away so only chat through Facebook etc. My friends from younger years got sick of seeing me slowly killing myself and it hurt them less to turn their backs. I understand that 100%. I still talk to them through msging as well so the support's there if/when I'm ready to be open with them.

I think the metaphor became clear when they started to confess to one another. "He didn't wait for me to say yes" and "She didn't listen when I said stop" both allude to a shared trauma that is now familiar to the public consciousness, thanks to more public discourse about consent.

Fantastic! ❤ This reminded me somewhat of the first episode of the latest Creepshow series. **SPOILER** A young lady had a personal monster that was killing people who didn't spend time with her, or something along those lines. She was just trying to find someone to connect with. She fakes a crisis to gain entry to the house of a woman she saw at a coffee shop (another customer) and thought would be the person to finally connect with her. In the end, when the coffee shop woman was talking to the young ladies monster, you find out she has a monster of her own. But she was able to tame it, and it was locked in a trunk that sat in her living room. Easily THE BEST episode of the series. So wonderfully acted. As this was as well. Great job guys.

A dead blindfolded business man in a suit.. and a charred person. Do they deserve this? Why is she so comfortable with this? I would hardly be in the mood to entertain... as if dating isn't hard enough...

5:52 "I have got this gin, someone left after a party."
A point where got knew it's about being r***d.
Gin Or djin? I wonder was this intentional?

      Not necessarily intentional hahah
Can I ask what you mean by it?

@@clementjochem djin are basically entities (predominantly found in islamic mythology) that can be good and bad, the bad ones are infamous for having the capability to suck souls of hosts.
The drink gin and the entity djin are both pronounced the same. And the timing of the dialogue that i stamped was also apt for the setting. The protagonist got this gin(djin) someone left after a party (implying that he was hurt at some party by some random girl, who left him traumatised and the pain she gave him still lurks around in the form of an evil entity) and he has got both the gin (drink) and the djin (entity) in the kitchen. So I thought this could be intentional reference.😅😅😅
Not to make my own analysis on your creation. It's just that's what clicked my mind in that time stamp.

@soumyayadav1725 I was familiar with the Djinn but I love this interpretation! No such thing as a wrong reading as far as I'm concerned!

It's an amazing film. The representation of everything concerned, from trauma to anxiety, to pain, to accepting the past and the steps being taken to move on are all shown really well.
I wish you well and hope to watch some more masterpieces from you😊

That creature is utterly terrifying. They both are. You've done an awesome job portraying mental illness. 👏

This was profound, we all have demons, pain and trauma in some way or another. The way she pulled him out of his panic attack was moving. Usually these kind of visuals denote some type of creature. Was nice to see this be more symbolic.

Well, this one is one of my favorite on Alter, the plot was amazing especially about STAND PAWA, and how encouraging to have a gf(?) like that, a real support system.
I like the idea about how to respond the your inner fear. So fresh! Tysm for all crews that got involved here

I watched this short film with Scottonauta, and it was a bizarre experience, cause it was a live stream, Scott and everyone in the chat were making jokes about the shadow monsters and most of them didn't understand what happened. I usually find short films a little dull, but this one in particular had me hooked from the start, and by the end while Scottonauta was laughing, I was crying. As a survivor of sexual abuse, this story hit me in a different way, I had never before felt as represented by a character as I did by James. I was just a boy when it happened, and unfortunately the person who did this is still free, as they is someone from my family and that's why no one wanted to report it. It's still very strange that people still don't believe that men also go through this kind of trauma, there are still people in my own family who think I'm lying.

I gotta say, this little film was a lovely and healthy-feeling surprise. I have one of these haunts in my own closet, and it makes life feel downright unpleasant at times. This film is a beautiful allegory. Thank you.
