There are family dynamics like this in real life. One member gets dismissed as "crazy" or "someone who starts drama" when it's actually a different family member who's actually sick. The others scapegoat the "crazy" one while they enable the behavior of the really sick one.
Thanks so much for watching. I’m not suggesting Upstairs is a documentary, but it’s important for me to ground stories & characters in reality. I’m really happy that aspect resonated with you. All the best. 👍
Yes the scape goat or sometimes black sheep is a family dynamic discussed in psychology. Where the family will pin all of its problems on one child, usually the one that is acting out in an obtuse manner. When in reality the issues are other members of the family, or the entire family as a whole.
@@popermen694 absolutely bang on. You would have hoped Tim, as a psychologist would have recognised the obvious signs, but he was so desperate to help Jennifer and therefore please Caroline, he simply couldn’t resist going upstairs.
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment 👍
That is so true! I was abused by my parents. They always gaslighted me into believing I was a horrible child that couldn’t be told anything and deserved to be beaten. I was diagnosed with depression in middle school and they made me believe I was crazy and even told people that. But they would defend family members who were blatantly toxic.
@@stasiagoro8720 I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I hope you have a good chosen family now. I knew some people like that growing up.
James and Caroline were born different, hatched from something other than human. Jen was the miracle biological child. James and Caroline tried to hide their DNA and their genetic tendencies......Jen was not crazy.
Spot on, it’s always the crazies that are actually the most sane. So glad you liked the film.
Poor woman. Led her to believe she was psychotic when she was the only one who was totally sane and normal.
@@philliptrow3330 like Shakespeare’s fools
Thanks for the spoiler.....Grrrrr
@@F.WormsworthStop blaming the comments when THAT'S what they're for. It's for discussing the content in the videos so that's on u.
When you go through it once and then watch it a second time, you start to notice things you probably didn’t before. Like how the boyfriend was the only one eating his dinner, and when they asked about his family and it turned out he didn’t really have anyone left.
Like they were making sure no one would come looking for him.
Thanks so much for watching, twice by the sounds of things. Well spotted, as Jennifer says to Tim; “you’re perfect’.
Thanks for the explanation 🙏, I like watching this films because English is my target language and sometimes I don't get all of the film
"Youre perfect" Jen says.
I noticed she said, "You're perfect" right after he mentioned those things and what it meant. But not the disconnected horror of her expression and tone.
Wow you noticed this even I didn't, fantastic attention to even tinier details. Really hope you're a writer!!!!!!
The role of the brother is very interesting. I liked the beginning twice as much when re-watching! The brother obviously hates what he is and realizes what they're doing is wrong. Hence Jen tells him he doesn't have to be there and can leave. Yet he chooses to stay because he can't resist his inner hunger. And he seems to hate that about himself.
I got a more hypocritical vibe from the brother. Like he didn't show up until RIGHT before dinner because he didn't want to enjoy any small talk with the family, and how he acted exasperated whenever Jen acknowledges truthful accounts of past events. However, the minute Caroline shows up covered in Tim's blood, he IMMEDIATELY asks to be excused from the table so he can go feast on his remains.
Tim isn't hateful of himself, but he prefers to live in delusion as much as possible. He doesn't acknowledge what he is until he's hungry and it's time to eat.
Yeah, such a pity for him
Luke Newberry is such a phenomenal actor!!! I was so excited to see him in this, he brought such a great performance to the role.
The gaslighting is the most terrifying part OMG
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
@@philliptrow3330 thank you! This movie was spot on
Yes, it's traumatic whether in this movie or real life.
Made up word
@@greedywtgtwt what word?
There's a double meaning when she says "you're perfect"... She hates her family, so she sees the fact he has *no family* as the perfect relief. But at the same time it's a pun (nobody to come looking for you. You're dead meat, dude!).
Well, Tim was warned not to go upstairs. This is a great short; albeit, predictable. I enjoyed the acting and the intense built-up. Notice how the mom cringes by the touch of Caroline and holds a knife in her hand in case Caroline decides to attack her; Similarly, as Caroline attacked her dad.
Hey, thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. Love the fact you picked up on Shirley’s hate & fear of Caroline … I mean, considering what she did, it’s hardly surprising. 😮
Yeah i think it was obvious Tim wasn't getting out of there .
when they were all in the kitchen, it could have gone either way. i didn't know if they were all gaslighting her or if jen was going to turn out to be the the bad one
@@philliptrow3330 I noticed it too. I was on Jen's side since the beginning. Wonder what happened to her after she screamed at the end
Predictable? Seriously?
The Story. The acting. The Intrigue. Everything in this is just so good. I had to come back to watch this again. I'm sure I'll be back again.
Hey, thanks so much for watching and your very complimentary comment, I really appreciate it …. and feel free to pop back for a rewatch as many times as you like. 👍
Yeah
This is absolutely impeccable work, actually my favorite thing I've ever watched. The suspense, the lead up, the reveal of different elements throughout is just so, so perfect. The gaslighting, building with the tension, and that one moment where I just started to doubt Jen, myself, and then it all comes to a head, perfect horrific conclusion. I especially love the foreboding throughout, how Jen makes the 'you're perfect' comment, how upset she is at James for no discernible reason, the comment about finding David's body looking like 'the animals got to him'. This is so wonderfully twisted and truly masterful. I hope it gets the attention it deserves.
Wow, thanks so much. As a filmmaker, comments like this make it all worth while. Cheers 👍
What I was trying to figure out after my first viewing was why the ashes took the particular shape they did. It's clear that Derek's ashes are on a mantle directly across from Jen and Shirley. Based on everybody's conversations, it sounds like Derek was killed by an extremely hungry Caroline after Jen scared Caroline's date into leaving with his life.
The ashes fall in a sort of T formation, though, stretching out towards BOTH ends of the dinner table along its center. After revisiting with a closer eye the moment when the ashes fall, however, it's more clear that BOTH twins are standing at each end of the dinner table. This suggests that Derek does not blame Shirley for what happened to him, but that he lays blame on both of the twins. It may have been Caroline who killed him, but both twins ate him and he holds both of them responsible.
It sounds, also, like the confrontation in the kitchen is what set Derek off. He couldn't abide what they said about Jen, so he spilled his ashes and ruined their fake dinner so he could remind his whole family what really happened to him. You can see that Caroline and James respond very differently. Caroline looks up defiantly, while James is really cast down by this reminder that his father hasn't forgotten what they did to him.
Absolutely spot on - Derek’s reaching out from the other side to tell Jen she’s not mad and point to the real perpetrators of his demise. Thanks so much for watching 👍
You should probably get out more
The writing on this is extremely clever. Rewatching this after the first viewing makes every line before the reveal suddenly make sense. It's very hard to write something suspenseful, tense, yet vague on the first viewing but perfectly clear on the second, all without spoiling the ending. Very, very smart.
when caroline said to tim to go upstairs i realised that jennifer is not the psycho here. because she warned him to not go upstairs
“I was a mistake” that was too real
Also I found this to be very representative of what it's like dealing with narcissists. They gaslight you to thinking you are the crazy ones. This family was basically doing a smear campaign on the good one. The part I didn't understand was if mom was human or not. I feel she was because she had given birth to the good one but maybe made a deal with something sinister for the other two. Also I took it that the dad was pointing at who killed him by using his ashes but then got confused at the end as something other than the hatchlings was eating Tim...so was dad really dead or was that image the family projected and he was upstairs eating Tim...but then why was the good one upset about what they had done to dad?
Hello again 😂
Shirley is definitely of the human variety and congrats on nailing the meaning behind the ashes - it’s definitely Derek reaching out from the other side to assure Jennifer she’s not delusional and the twins are evil.
Not sure what you mean about who’s upstairs - the twins are the ones consuming the prey … but in their true form, obviously. 😉
@@philliptrow3330 it's just ( I have to watch again to make sure) but when Jennifer is trying to run upstairs you hear the noise while the brother is holding her and the sister looks on at her for a minute before the sister image is gone....I'll find and give more details. Right now got to get geared up to go back out for Karaoke. Again thanks for a great short and thanks for getting back to me.
I was wondering the same thing but I also thought it might have been showing the dad wasn’t human? Or somehow responsible for the hatching? His ashes looked green (And I’ve never seen ashes before - so maybe I’m totally wrong?) like the body that was burnt wasn’t human remains.
@@CuraTeIpsum3 ooh, I love all the theories. Derek was human though, consumed by the twins when Jennifer chased off their intended prey. Of course, they still needed to feed, so poor old Derek was for the chopping board. The noise upstairs was made by Caroline in her true form … 👹
A THOUSAND TIMES YES! Narcissists/enablers/flying monkeys/scapegoat/golden children the whole cast and crew of the narcissist's lair.
This was a great telling of how families will bend over backwards to help one child at the expense of the rest.
This was excellent. Great twist. Was not expecting that ending at all. I love it when you think things are gonna go in one direction and they go the other.
So glad you liked it, thanks for watching.
I couldn't understand the movie... please explain it to me
I’m super curious where the twist was for you? I felt the story was completely predictable from the beginning once the sister showed up. What were your thoughts going through?
Very very compelling film. I not only loved the horror but also the portrayal of family dynamics and the effects that can leave. Jen would need therapeutic intervention even without that fact her family were monsters, and also because of that.
Thanks so much. Really glad you picked up on the family dynamics and how each of them are struggling with their own battles … especially Jen, obviously. Cheers for watching😊
At first u think the conversation at the beginning is Normal but after watching the film u start to interpret it differently
This would be amazing as a full length film. Like a flash back of what happens to the father in the end, also showing what their true forms were as well as how they really came about in the family. Excellent short, wonderful acting. I have referred it to a few friends as well. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching & commenting and good shout, the feature script covers exactly what you mentioned 👍

for such a short movie the suspense was really well done. the 'meeting the new boyfriend' scenario was a really clever exposition device, and, as you find out in the end, a great way for james and caroline to bring in new victims
I love so much Iain's gestures in his acting, always the same but so me in any occasion! Thanks for sharing it with us 👍🏻
Absolute pleasure. He is very good, isn’t he? … it’s a shame he went upstairs.
We need a longer version I want to see where this would go or what would happen next. What are the twins true form?
This had the most amazing twist at the end. Is the little sister really a murderer, delusional, crazy? Or is there an even deeper darker secret lurking in that house? Amazing film had me second guessing myself there for a minute lol. LOVED IT.
Oh, there’s definitely something going on in that house. If you ever get invited for dinner at the Saints, I’d give it a miss.
She isn't crazy. Her origin parents found two hatched 'demon' things...and raised them as their own thinking they couldn't have a child. The demon things ate the father. The medication at the end is to help the actual daughter forget. I think it's pretty clear.
Watch again...pay attention to what everyone says, but especially little sis....it's not her, she's the only normal "human" kid!!!! And she's the most sane one there 🤣
I think they all didn't eat the dinner except the boyfriend coz he "is" the dinner for them. The little sister must be telling the truth.
@Lightning Rose yeah I was confused why his ashes spread like that.
would have been a lot better if the thumbnail didn't give away the twist
This was great, I think the sister will eventually break out. She's old enough that she knows what's going on, even with the meds, yet she takes them anyway knowing it will help her move on but I think she will choose to remember and do something about it. I wanted her to help the guy so bad, idk why it's so scary to me the idea of trying so hard to get someone to believe you but they won't. I want a part two where she saves the guy! And we find out more about the twins and maybe the psychology of the mom and why she feels the need to protect them. A lot could be done with this story line, many avenues could be explored. I've seen similar story lines before but they never got the horror level like this one, where you really empathize for them and can physically feel the trauma.
Hey ToxicMoon,
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment, really appreciate it.
If we ever get to make the feature, you’ll see just how Jen goes on to ‘deal’ with the situation. 👍
Even if the sister was completely wrong, you didn’t need to escape, and wasn’t a killer who killed her father - would a smart person not Get Out?! 😂 I love horror movies, they truly teach me to pay attention & run at the first sign of freaky situations 😅
Never go in the basement. Been pounded into me over the years. Now my own creeps me out. Sheesh.
This is like the sequel of the short film where that couple wanted kids but couldnt so the man appeared out of a fridge holding a monster baby and the woman was happy with that eldritch abomination as a child😂
Can't believe how fantastic this was!!!! Everyone commenting missed SO much, and the main points! Little sis said it.... they were HATCHED....and mum's behavior & words....people, watch it again! Great & subtle acting! Loved this🌟🙌🙌👏👏👏
Thanks Joanne, really glad you enjoyed the film and thank you so much for leaving an absolutely delightful comment.❤❤❤
Can you please explain this to me? English is not my first language and I 'm lost in translation
@@rossellaborthe mom and dad couldn’t have kids so they summoned and hatched demons. They must feed on human flesh. The youngest sibling was a miracle child born of the human mom and dad. It’s why she is trying to save people. One day the daughter saves a guy so the older sister eats the dad instead. The dads ashes fell out pointing to the two demons proving to the youngest daughter that she’s not crazy.

I’ve said this a few times now, so apologies if you’ve already read it, but the intention was always that the true horror is Jennifer’s realisation that she has to relive this nightmare time & time again. Glad that struck a note with you.
Omg I love Iain De Caestecker. Loved him as Fitz in Agents of Shield and in Overlord!
I had no clue what's going on the entire time, it feels like this movie is predictable and unpredictable at the same time. Weirded out but also love it.
I thought this was such a great short and it was such a pleasure to see Luke Newberry from "in the flesh" acting in this. The only thing I wish ALTER would stop doing though is putting spoilers in the thumbnail. I was quite sure that the siblings were some kind of carnivorous creatures, however the element of doubt is what adds to the tension. Seeing the daughter soaked in blood in the thumbnail kinda spoils that....
Thanks so much for watching & really happy to hear you enjoyed, Upstairs. I have reached out to the powers that be about the thumbnail, but I’ve never received a response, but I totally agree.
Oh and yes, both Luke & In the Flesh are awesome.

Yup, poor old Tim. So desperate to help Jennifer, he just couldn’t see the truth. Such a shame 😢
Well I took a big break from ALTER....not because I wanted to but because I had to....as I was getting so ridiculously addicted like practically frothing at the mouth for the next short when they were coming that I was going to become my own horror short. Anyway, here I am again and once again ALTER has managed to find shorts that are fantastic in delivery. This was terrifying. The most disturbing part to me was when Jen said "your perfect" after the guy talked of his whole family being gone and I was like "perfect for what?" thinking these guys wanted to eat him as they sure weren't eating what was on their plate. The acting was phenomenal.
I hear too much horror can bring on rabies-esque symptoms, but I’m glad you’ve recovered and are back on the Alter wagon👍

Thought it was a great short, but anyone who says they didn't see the twist obviously didn't see the thumbnail of the blood soaked smiling sister for this video. It was literally one of the last shots. I do wish Alter would put a placeholder or a different photo from the movie. It'd be so much impactful, it's a shane because had I not seen it then it would have been a surprise. Great film though spoiled by Alter.
True. That was out of my control to be honest, although I guess the logic is to use the most gruesome thumbnail to entice people in … just a shame, as you say, it kinda gives the whole thing away. Thanks so much for watching though, really appreciate it 👍

I have no idea what was going on in this film, but the performances and mood were outstanding.
Cheers Kevin, glad you liked it. Sometimes it’s nice to interpret things your own way, but happy to discuss further if you wanted a more in-depth explanation 😊
My Guess - mom and younger daughter are human. Older siblings (twins) are some bird-human hybrid creature. The younger daughter says she was a surprise (parents didn't think they could have kids) and they were "hatched". The older daughter lures people (or just men) to the house. Gets them to go upstairs where something kills them so they can feed. Like how mother birds do. They keep the younger daughter drugged up to "forget" and not spill their secret.
I wasn't sure if the father was really dead, or he was the thing upstairs, but I think he was human like mom and younger daughter and was killed (accident or on purpose), and it's something else upstairs killing.
There was a movie recently, it might've been called Hatched or Hatchling; I didn't see it but saw a video of someone discussing it. A neglected girl finds an egg and takes care of it. It hatches, and is bird-like, but as it gets older, it starts to look more and more like the girl; to where at the end I think you can't tell them apart. It looked pretty interesting and I keep meaning to see it for myself.
@@philliptrow3330I definitely need a more in depth explanation 😂 I loved it, but at the end I was lost.
@@daniellevaughn4598absolutely love this❤. The bird thing is new to me, but adore the visuals. Have to be honest, they’re not bird-hybrids, but they’re definitely not human where as Shirley, Jennifer and Derek (when he was alive) are … the rest - NAILED IT!😊

Ok so reading the comments i got the information i wanted.
The mother and Jennifer are human, the dad was also human, but the twins are evil. Jennifer is the true daughter while the twins are... Something else, and it seems they have a "true form", and it is not the human form.
The father's ashes were the father trying to show Jen she's not insane, pointing to who killed him apparently.
What happend was that Jen chased the intended prey away, the one ahe saved once. But becauae the twins still needed to eat... the father became the substitute. So yeah that's basically it in case you were wondering like me!

I love the story and the acting! Is the guy that plays the husband guy in a marvel show? That “Agents of shield” show?
Hey, I remember Lain! Loved his character on SHIELD.
Phillip Trow. A true horror genius. What a man !!
Well Caroline gets ravenous ; goes upstairs and kills Tim. But why doesn't she do it immediately after he goes up ? Why do they wait at the dining table ?
Again, when Jen yells "Tim Tim" , why does Caroline say what is he doing upstairs when she's the one who sent him there.
One more doubt. The twin brother is shown to leave his meal untouched , obviously because he has plants to feed upstairs. But then how does Caroline say I scoffed it up..I get ravenous ? Apart from these queries, I must say that's the best ALTER episode I've been through, so far. NAMASTEY from India. 😊
The acting, the story, the dialogue and the scenes were very well done. The only thing i did not enjoy very much was the fact that it was too predictable. It did not create a sort of impact when the twist was unveiled. I was not very hooked. But i did enjoy the work and the organic dynamic between characters. I did learn from your techniques. And that is great!
Brilliant! I dont know how the actors kept such straight faces without laughing. Kudos to them!
The gaslighting was the most horrifying part of this, because holy f-ck. The way they convinced her to doubt herself.
My idea is that the parents believed they could not conceive and made a demonic deal to have two children and Jenna was born a few years later after this deal was made.
Absolutely bang on (although the youngest Saint is called Jennifer 😉) Shirley & Derek really wanted to be parents, thought they couldn’t conceive, so used ‘other means’ to have a family … then suddenly Jennifer came along a few years later & suddenly it wasn’t just the dinner guests that were at risk. 😶
Bam! This was a work of tension that turned things atound and on its head.
It begs the question of who is the one with mental illness.
Loved the ending as it worked well.
The cover up of this level is Very Bad Things territory.
Great work to all involved.
Peace.
And peace to you my friend. So glad you enjoyed it and thanks for tip, I shall be checking out, ‘Very Bad Things’.
That would have been a no for me when I walked in the house and spoke and it was nothing, but silence 🤣
After reading a bunch of comments, I’m gonna watch it again! Very good flick
The second I saw "James," I knew this was top quality work. I will watch anything with that actor. May I suggest In The Flesh? Even tho it was one episode, the series Banana (offshoot of Cucumber) was wonderful, I often go back to watch these shows.
Yep, Luke is a very talented man. In the Flesh is immense and the reason I knew of Luke and wanted him to play James … luckily he loved the script and agreed. I also worked on Cucumber - fantastic show (as were Banana & Tofu).
oh my gosh, what an amazing short. This opened my third eye- I'm starting to second guess who is crazy and who is not in my personal life. This has invoked a great awakening. Thanks Daddy Trow.
Pleasure my child … would it hurt you to call your old Dad from time to time? I guess it’s life imitating art … or is it the other way around?
@@philliptrow3330 Why would I need to call.. I'm right UPSTAIRS..aha see what I did there.aha ha ha. Maybe I should be the writer hehe
I know the feeling. I also live in an effed up family.
Pure gold
Omg the blood red lady is so gorgeous
Reminds me of american psycho
I could feel the dizzying smell of blood a mile away
Phenomenal Story-Telling. The director tells a lot in such a short span of time. Brilliant ❤
Hoping the Director replies, I wanna be a film maker too one day. Some words of inspiration would really mean a lot❤🔥
Well, I’m the director and I’m replying, so that’s a couple of ticks. Thank you for watching and your amazing comments, I’m genuinely blown away. As for words of inspiration (ha!) I can’t guarantee it, but I’ll certainly give it a go.
I noticed you said you wanted to be a film maker, ‘one day’, but what’s stopping you from being a film maker now? I’m going to assume you have a smart phone, it’s got a video camera, you can download cheap or even free editing software, so crack on. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have a budget, you simply use what you have. I recently saw a documentary at the Horror-On-Sea festival about the low budget film maker, Michael J Murphy who said exactly that, “use what you have. If you’ve got a garden shed, make a film based in a garden shed”. The challenge of making films with limitations is only going to help you further down the line. It’s all about creating interesting stories & characters that don’t need multiple props, locations or CGI. So get creating, today & not ‘some day’ … good luck👍
@@philliptrow3330 Hello!
You are fucking awsome, this was such a good film you should really make longer films.
I love your work!
And also I started with animation and CGI, I started with using Blender (blender is free) and my phone as a camera, and I learned a lot and succeeded as an animator for films.
Everyone can do it they just don't try or give it a go.
@@drywallman55 hey, congratulations, that’s fantastic news about becoming an animator. There seems to be an incredibly popular animation on Alter that was released a couple of weeks back.
Agreed. If people really want it, they’ve just got to do it. Thanks so much for your amazing comments. All the best. 👍
@@philliptrow3330 Thanks!
@@philliptrow3330 That is amazing, thank you.
