When teenage Rae realizes her stepfather has been stealing her mother's medication as her mother inches closer and closer to death, she has to make a decision regardless of her morality... Quiet. Rae has a plan to ace the SAT, get into college, and help her sick mother. There's only one thing standing in her way -- her mother's toxic boyfriend, Leroy, who keeps drinking away the tuition money her mother had saved for her.
When Rae finds out Leroy has been stealing her mother's pain pills, she does the unthinkable to save herself and her mother. She slaughters her step father in her family's meathouse, and processes the body to sell for grocery money on the side of a dusty backroad.

The way the film-makers depict abuse is very refreshing- he's not some evil villain, striding into the room menacingly like a shark while she cowers in the corner. He doesn't know and revel in his own villainy. He's selfish, childish, he thinks it's funny to sexually assault her, it's all a big game to him and there's no acknowledgement of how much of an ass he actually is. This feels a lot more real than some more dramatized depictions.

EASY?!?! As a forensics scientist, it is NOT easy to murder someone and get away with it. Trust me, I have tried. So get your facts right before you speak to murderers who work mega hard at their profession.

Not a good signal for our current world. And this type of story has already been done so many times. As the writer and producer you should also be aware of this perspective/criticism.
@@bdarecords_ Stories like these have been done before, but that’s not the point. It’s cathartic for abuse victims to watch things like this and cit doesn’t normalize anything. It’s a horror short that was supposed to be gorey. Even if it’s not your personal cup of tea, it’s still a well done story.

All the more impressed with the actress (Ellie Gall) after finding out she's Australian, she did a great job with the accent. Really cool short, satisfying comeuppance.

Wicked and sick in a way that still delivers. We get a revenge short that satisfies because of the sheer level of cruelty and abuse we witness in the beginning.
The story is pretty tight and to the point. Much of the gore is left to our imagination.
Makes you think twice about buying fresh meat on the roadside.
Maybe she'll go to college and be a surgeon. Oh the possibilities.

Hey, wanted to let you know. I showed this with my watch party group. It was a big hit. I didn't realize until we watched it that Justin Kirk from Weeds was in it. Good to see him in roles like this.

Wow that was an amazing 11 minute play. I would love to meet the cast in a chatroom. The setting was interesting here, I guess she was tired of her dad taking advantage of her and her mom, so she fought back hard with knives/weapons!

I’ve been binge watching all things Alter these couple days. By far, this one had me at the edge of my seat.
Justin Kirk is fantastic. I've seen him in Weeds, and Succession, but this short just put him among my favorite actors list.
The acting in this short film was great!

@@flux1968 It was a bunny cage actually. Growing up, there was a lot of clutter in my home. Nonsensical things that my step-father just wouldn't get rid of. The intent of the sign in the bedroom was to show her pre-meditation. When Rae snaps in the kitchen, Leroy becomes her responsibility. A problem she has to fix. No rats... this time...

Apparently some Player charged half-cocked into the Dragon's Lair to slay dragons whilst yelling " LEEEEEEROY JENKENS !!!!!" .
