I met MatPat in 2014 at a Con. He was very nice. He reveled in the attention from fans and answered all our questions. He was a lot of fun. It really seemed like his real personality.
It's really interesting to have seen the dynamic of the Game Theorists go from a collective of video game enthusiasts to the Mat Pat show. I remember watching them between 2014-2016 when Mat was starting to grow the channel so it was an interesting time. Also the TOME project was more of a Christopher Niosi thing than it was a GT thing. The 15 episode animated series was went up on youtube in 2015 and it's still there today it seems.
With this one what I understood (note I have not done ANY research to confimr this) is that it was a channel collab as a sorta 'sub boost' for both Mat and the other host. However It immediately saw extremely sporadic uploads and I don't think the viewership was all that great from what I remember.
Matpat seems kinda like he is raising tons of new channel ideas to flower into their own thing (or fail miserably after 2 episodes in some cases.) and use them as a way to hold viewers in between other shows or larger projects as a bonus, rather then the other way around. Pretty cool if its intentional on his end
As it seems, he likes to make an idea bloom, and be shared with people; but the game theory channel was grown just for that, unfortunately: game theorizing. That's why a lot of them fail or get separated into their own personal channel; cause not everyone from that channel would like to see something different, so they would amass a small portion of views
@@RoninCatholic I just went on newgrounds and all the old episodes are still there. Its so damn cringey but damn I love the nostalgia rush of pre-social media internet.
I like culture clash and some of the other shows, didn't know he straight up deleted their existence :/ even if no one watched them at first, he at least could've left them there for posterity
About the deadlock serie i remember the matpat say in one of hes livestreams that he and the people on the show got alot of hate for it and that it took a little to long to make.
If I remember right, the TOME thing was basically just MatPat signal boosting a show he liked. It's actually a remake of an old sprite animation show. And they weren't really "video game characters" so much as "people playing a futuristic MMO like Sword Art Online or .hack".
Hey there, I'm a current Game Theory editor! I don't have a lot of behind-the-scenes knowledge, but I can confirm that the lack of gaming shows that deviate from the "Game Theory" concept is due to the algorithm not favoring channels without a clear focus. It's a shame some of these series are privated though. I remember really enjoying Smash History. As for Frame-by-Frame on Film Theory, the creator's name was Kyle Adams (AKA twelthofadime). Not only did his FT series disappear, but almost all of his online content has been scrubbed. Including an entire gaming channel he did alongside Makemebad35 called "Pwnage". The theory is that he has moved on from CZcams as a career and dissociated himself with that content in order to help his chances with future employment.
Also very easily debunked as he has used work of a certain lewd artist in his thumbnails before. He actually used to use raunchy themes in his earlier Game Theory videos.
I feel like Deadlock reached a boiling point at the TF2 v Overwatch video. Came off more as an attempt to ride the hate train, and considering how inaccurate a lot of it was just made the video come off as super ingenuous, with the guy defending TF2 not even representing it well. Hell, MatPat didn't even seem like he truly knew much about Overwatch.
Hearing about Ronnie broke my heart, I just never thought he would do that, I had no idea he was suffering so much, I wish I could have done something to help him
Iirc the reason TOME is gone is due to its creator Kirbopher. He’s been involved in a few scandals. I believe he was exposed for being a physical abuser. One of the more notable ones is that he was the original voice actor for Byleth in Fire Emblem Three Houses. But broke his NDA and was removed from the project.
Actually if I recall, he bragged about Byleth being in Smash before it was announced. So not only did he break his NDA, but he leaked the character before release too. Truly a modern day version of the Icarus story.
Digressing and Sidequesting will always be one kf the highlights of that channel ❤ Ronnie had a brilliant mind and real talent. He is sorely missed. I had no idea his family is getting the revenue from those videos either, makes me want to revisit them again :)
Dunno if anyone said this but Frame by Frame was made by Twelfthofadime and idk why but all traces of him have been wiped from the internet. Hearing you talk about it unlocked a memory because I had completely forgot about that show and I remembered I had watched the creators content before he collabed with Matpat on film theory!
If I remember correctly, "Frame by Frame" was hosted by Kyle, who also did let's plays with MakeMeBad35 on another channel called "pwnageshow". Edit: pwnageshow and his own channel, "twelthofadime" no longer contain videos.
When I was younger I paid for the CZcams red game lab series, it gets better past the mirror's edge video but not by much. The stand out example is the Watch Dogs video where they actually brought in cyber security personalities and used real cyber attacks, still a bit cringe but honestly pretty good considering the rest of the series. I recommend you check it out if you have even a slight interest in cyber security because honestly as a young teenager, that video along with a few other things led to me pursuing a career in cyber security.
Hot take: Deadlock got canceled after King Raja assblasted him about the TF2 Vs. Overwatch episode. JUst a theory... Did you expect the funny game theory meme? Good. My joke worked.
@@themanwiththegoldengooch9811 The king pointed out several writing mistakes as well as biased misinformation that made both games look either better or worse than they actually were. I recommend watching King Raja's video for more info if not a few laughs :D
@@themanwiththegoldengooch9811 generally, the Deadlock episodes represented both sides poorly. The Dark Souls Episode said you needed the very obscure rusted iron ring to beat the game, and that made it bad. You don’t need that item, at all. They also didn’t realized that the NPC’s are supposed to be unreliable to some extent.
He said sometime on gtlive that the reason they stopped deadlock was because the custom pixel animations took too long to animate along with everything else they were doing
Dang Ronnie passed? I had kinda just tuned out Game Theory in general a good while before 2018 so I never knew. That's a damn shame he took his own life too, his show was one of my favorites on the channel and he always seemed like a chill, content guy. Rest in peace
Well, for an easy idea of it, just look up Gaijin Goombah. He did Game Exchange and Culture Shock on The Game Theorists, but separated to his own channel so they could keep their focus more narrow for algorithm purposes (the algorithm would see that people would skip over videos and take it as fluctuating popularity when it was simply that some people would only come for one series. Separating the channels meant that the algorithm would play nice. A lot of channels did similar around then, ending series or separating them between channels like a music channel and a gaming channel sort of thing). Gaijin continued on his own channel with Culture Shock and Game Exchange and has since expanded to other series with the same themes (Which Ninja, looking at popular ninjas in media and rating them on historical accuracy, and now one about yokai in media and telling their mythological origins). So while some may have stayed on the main channel (I'm sure D&SQ would have stayed if Ronnie was still alive), most would likely have either remained until their popularity died or would have separated to their own channels to aid the algorithm like Gaijin did (and I believe Footofaferret continued A Brief History on his own channel for a bit as well)
Whatever “scandal” it had, it was mostly unrelated to TOME since the show had already finished. But I suppose most of the allegations came from his time heading the project, so it’s iffy.
UPDATE: Austin left the game theorists, to make videos on his own channel and the videos on game theory eere deleted, whuch means that a lot of THE SCIENCE can be considered lost media.
TOME! Oh my god! It’s on Chris Niosi’s own channel and fully completed! I loved its concept and a lot of the designs. The voice over is pretty good too. I think he’s also working on making a game based on TOME as well, I remember him streaming sprite animation. Hell, littleKuriboh voices in it too! I had no clue it was associated with GT at all! Definitely recommend checking it out.
@@Rvtro I've heard some of that too, but was never too sure about them so I think it would at least be an interesting topic to talk about in the next video, sorry just need closure on that channel
Gosh I remember Frame by Frame. It was just deleted one day and I never knew why... 😔 It was literally my favorite show on CZcams and I used to rewatch those videos almost every week
They mentioned a few years ago that a lot of people say that (and I originally thought they were siblings too)! But it’s just coincidence 😂 they met for the first time in college
God, TOME, I need to watch that again. I remember first seeing it on Mat's channel, excitedly waiting for new uploads, before realizing that it was uploaded on another channel with a lot more episodes. Got to the final one and just forgot about it until now. Time for a trip down memory lane it seems.
Even after all these years, I still remember when he made that video about the headshot you get in the beginning of fallout new Vegas and I had to correct a few things.
Man I remember all of these shows now but forgot over the years since I kinda stopped checking up on the channel ever since everything got turned into Five Nights at Freddy's, though I still tune in here and there. Great video 👌
I don't recall TOME ever having been associated with Game Theory beyond them uploading one episode for promotion, and believe they said that's the entire reason why it was there. TOME was originally a basic Newgrounds show, and what you see as the series now was a complete remake and rewrite. Also, it's awesome. Say I, NYLOCKE! DRAGON OF VAGUELY REMEMBERING PAST EVENTS!
For the record, on deadlock, I forget when, but I think Matpat mentioned in another video when talking about fan arguments that deadlock basically was getting people up in arms having fights about the topics involved instead of the more calm rational debates he was hoping for? My phrasing may be off, but it was something about basically getting people too worked up rather than talking stuff out. (Might have been in his video post giving undertale to the pope, but I could be wrong)

Also the TOME project was more of a Christopher Niosi thing than it was a GT thing. The 15 episode animated series was went up on youtube in 2015 and it's still there today it seems.
Actually, he currently working on a Tome RPG game
I mean, they still have Austin from shoddy cast
@@SofaPop. i dont like what he do on GT, thats kinda annoying and not fun at all
There is another forgotten film theory show called "Film Legends"
Can't believe I missed one
@@TheGamerFromMars dang
With this one what I understood (note I have not done ANY research to confimr this) is that it was a channel collab as a sorta 'sub boost' for both Mat and the other host. However It immediately saw extremely sporadic uploads and I don't think the viewership was all that great from what I remember.
@@TheGamerFromMars oof
wasn’t there a “best film ever!?” where it pits different movies and give it super high scores?
Anyone remember watching the Deadlock episodes where Mat Pat got Reggie from Nintendo? Those were cool.
I love that episode
Tome was actually on newgrounds for years way before gametheory was a thing, it actually started off using sprites instead of flash animation lol
The good 'ol days of TTA
That's the version I watched. I'm old.
@@RoninCatholic I just went on newgrounds and all the old episodes are still there. Its so damn cringey but damn I love the nostalgia rush of pre-social media internet.
MatPat really wanted people to call him "Matdaddy" because he grew a patchy beard.
That's something that's just supposed to happen on its own. Sakurai didn't ask to be called "Daddy Sakurai"
umm thats not it works if you ask people to call you that it dies off fast just like all of hes video escapades
Makes sense
*#lolz*
I think that's a joke
I like culture clash and some of the other shows, didn't know he straight up deleted their existence :/ even if no one watched them at first, he at least could've left them there for posterity
I didn't know that until now either and I agree.
I presume they're deleted for algorithm reasons
@@lovablesnowman ? What would that even mean?

About the deadlock serie i remember the matpat say in one of hes livestreams that he and the people on the show got alot of hate for it and that it took a little to long to make.
I mean I’ve only seen the TF2 Vs Overwatch Deadlock but Dear God it was atrocious

The Smash History privating may have been due to Nintendo DMCAs.
That’s what I thought too. As Nintendo really didn’t like content creator back then
If I remember right, the TOME thing was basically just MatPat signal boosting a show he liked.
It's sad cause the Frame by Frame series of videos where absolute bangers
"Ive actually never looked at pooorn.. ever."
-Matpat (2017)
this episode was cringe-gold.
(X) doubt
Everyone say that in front of their wife x)
Also very easily debunked as he has used work of a certain lewd artist in his thumbnails before. He actually used to use raunchy themes in his earlier Game Theory videos.
@@Riitje lol, it's actually his wife and him pick those lewd pictures because their assumption is that it can gain views.
Most of us watched all these shows, now they’re lost media. Weird huh.
Hearing about Ronnie broke my heart, I just never thought he would do that, I had no idea he was suffering so much, I wish I could have done something to help him
Matpat more like Wattpad
Here's a good one too: Matpat? More like... MatBad!
GOTTEM!
Got em
that is the most lowkey roast I've ever heard, i appreciate that
Iirc the reason TOME is gone is due to its creator Kirbopher. He’s been involved in a few scandals. I believe he was exposed for being a physical abuser.
One of the more notable ones is that he was the original voice actor for Byleth in Fire Emblem Three Houses. But broke his NDA and was removed from the project.
Didn't he make brawl taunts back in the day.
@@Sgt-Wolf yeeeeep. So in another timeline he would’ve went from doing smash parodies to actually being a character in smash
@@thatguyinaldi9056
Damm...
@@Sgt-Wolf yeah.. :/
Actually if I recall, he bragged about Byleth being in Smash before it was announced. So not only did he break his NDA, but he leaked the character before release too. Truly a modern day version of the Icarus story.
Hey but this secret is just a theory.
*A matt theory*
Digressing and Sidequesting will always be one kf the highlights of that channel ❤ Ronnie had a brilliant mind and real talent. He is sorely missed. I had no idea his family is getting the revenue from those videos either, makes me want to revisit them again :)
Dunno if anyone said this but Frame by Frame was made by Twelfthofadime and idk why but all traces of him have been wiped from the internet. Hearing you talk about it unlocked a memory because I had completely forgot about that show and I remembered I had watched the creators content before he collabed with Matpat on film theory!
Gaijin, Ronnie, Drake and Foot of a ferrot were always my favs. Still watch everyone to this day.
I remember Mat said in one of his life streams that he stopped deadlock because the debates made people too upset
If I remember correctly, "Frame by Frame" was hosted by Kyle, who also did let's plays with MakeMeBad35 on another channel called "pwnageshow".
Edit: pwnageshow and his own channel, "twelthofadime" no longer contain videos.
Yep, Kyle's personal videos also disappeared from his account.

Austin’s screaming
also me:yep have to agree with ya there
Weirdly enough, game theory sorta became all these meshed togethor
When I was younger I paid for the CZcams red game lab series, it gets better past the mirror's edge video but not by much.
The stand out example is the Watch Dogs video where they actually brought in cyber security personalities and used real cyber attacks, still a bit cringe but honestly pretty good considering the rest of the series.
I recommend you check it out if you have even a slight interest in cyber security because honestly as a young teenager, that video along with a few other things led to me pursuing a career in cyber security.
If you want to practice penetrating I would suggest to check out hack the box.
Ayyy man! That's rad! I'm pursuing that career as well! Best of luck!
Hot take: Deadlock got canceled after King Raja assblasted him about the TF2 Vs. Overwatch episode. JUst a theory...
Did you expect the funny game theory meme? Good. My joke worked.
what happened in the episode that got everyone so upset?
@@themanwiththegoldengooch9811 The king pointed out several writing mistakes as well as biased misinformation that made both games look either better or worse than they actually were. I recommend watching King Raja's video for more info if not a few laughs :D
I miss King Raja. He's a chill guy.
I'm kinda surprised about tome being on game theory but most of these video series meantion were a nice blast from the past

@@zednotzee And they don't have them in RED! That's all i want!
It really makes you think what would happen if all the side shows on Game Theory got popular?

I don't recall TOME ever having been associated with Game Theory beyond them uploading one episode for promotion, and believe they said that's the entire reason why it was there.
TOME was originally a basic Newgrounds show, and what you see as the series now was a complete remake and rewrite. Also, it's awesome.

Tome became a full series
There has got to be backup downloads of the Smash History series. Those videos got a lot of views.
There are, I've found all of them
