America’s preeminent Led Zeppelin tribute band, ZOSO, feat former members of Pantera, Mr. Bungle, Danzig, and more, and described by the L.A. Times as “head and shoulders above all other Zeppelin tributes,” performs “Black Dog,” one of the band’s most quixotic riff arrangements, and iconic, lust-fueled songs, at Austin’s 3TEN ACL (ACL Live) before an SRO crowd.
But as writer Erik Davis suggests in his excellent 33 1/3 title “Led Zeppelin IV,” though, “Despite its basis in quotidian blues images, ‘Black Dog’ and its song of craving marks the point where sexual obsession goes supernatural. Dreams devour Percy [Plant], but they also push him onward . . . “
The song’s guitar solo, like so many of Page’s, also balances the whip of classic country motifs with the stabbing shrieks of the blues; it’s Chet Atkins meets Otis Rush, with plenty of James Burton roiled into the mix. Burning red, indeed. JVR
