  • How To Insulate A Basement - Best Practices.
    FULL ARTICLE: www.aconcordcarpenter.com/bas...
Using Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation - Basement Insulation Best Practice Closed-cell spray foam is as the name suggests a polyurethane foam that is sprayed on by a nozzle. A mixture comprising of isocyanate and polyol resin mix at the tip of the applicator.
Basement Insulation - Make the Basement Air Tight - Using Closed Cell Spray Foam:
The simplest way to prevent this water vapor from entering the space is to prevent air movement [moisture] into the basement by installing a vapor barrier. When properly installed, Basement Insulation Closed-cell spray foam (spray or board) acts as a vapor barrier and insulates. Closed-cell insulation is considered best practice for basement insulation.
Once you have insulated and sealed off the masonry you can install the partition walls. If using Basement Insulation Closed-cell spray foam to seal and insulate you can install your partition walls ahead of time. Ensure that you space the wall away from the masonry 1-2 inches for the Basement Insulation Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation to create a capillary gap between the masonry and wood wall or metal studs.

Will look at your articles when I get the chance to. There has been somewhat of a step back from foam here in the Midwest (at least what I have seen) due to the costs associated with when something goes wrong somewhere else in the envelope and foam can exacerbate the problem. Foam had been billed as the cure all and it itself has created new issues. As a remodeling contractor, I encourage everyone to do their due diligence of homework when considering spray foam. There is a lot of misguided information out there, even from "the professionals". Keep up the good work guys.

Does closed cell spray foam off gas after 24 hours?

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

Best practiced. Masonry loves to wick moisture. Your masonry needs to breath somewhere. Do not completely seal your masonry. If your masonry can not breath it will condense and leak. There is a reason masonry sealant stops above grade. Spray foaming a basement deprives your masonry of heat. It moves the condensation area inside the masonry. If you do not have an area for masonry to dry where does the moisture go? You need ventilation in the attic. Be it passive or mechanical. You take a shower or boil water where does the moisture go? Try using a fireplace, stove vent, bathroom vent, and you find you need ventilation. They make heat exchangers for those problems. Some shingle companies will not warranty if no roof ventilation. Spray foam is a great product. Some care and thought should be taken with spray foam when using on masonry, roofs, and chimneys, because of condensation and moisture. Thinking of spray foaming the inside of my brick crawl space.

What are your thoughts on a combination of closed cell and let’s say rockwool insulation? Spraying 1-2 inches of closed cell and then adding rockwool to stud bays? Would the cost go down on the closed cell install because they aren’t using as much material?

    Rob,
Do you spray crawlspace foundation walls that are sub grade? I've had a contractor recommend this, yet watched elsewhere that the cinderblock will not be able to breathe and become waterlogged and degrade at a rapid rate. What are your thoughts? I am planning to insulate the walls with spray foam or board.

@@ConcordCarpenter Do you have a video on your thoughts re this? I was told that because I get moisture through my foundation, spraying it would trap the moisture rather than letting it seep through and eventually evaporate. I know this would drastically reduce the moisture I'm getting, but I don't want to damage the foundation!

I have cast iron around a good portion of my basement. I'm assuming the contractor will frame right in front that which will be about 9 inches from the cinder block wall. Can i still use 2 inches of spray foam? There will be a air gap between the foam and studs for that area
