  • We talked to the one and only Craig Button after the Habs draft Austrian defenceman David Reinbacher 5th overall at the 2023 NHL Draft. What are your thoughts on the Habs picking Reinbacher?

If the rest of the fanbase want to throw Hughes under the bus after making some amazing trades and signings, so be it, but I personally have tons of faith in his vision of rebuilding the Habs into a Stanley Cup contender. I think Reinbacher was a good acquisition for the Habs, my only complaint is that we could have traded down for him instead of wasting the #5 pick. Who knows, maybe they even tried to do that but it turned out to be more complicated than expected with the Coyotes potentially interested in him. In that case it was the correct decision to pick Reinbacher at fifth.
Also, I do believe that we dodged a bullet in Michkov and his three year contract with SKA is honestly just one of many red flags. He doesn't speak English, he's undersized, many credible sources are telling us that he has attitude problems and that he told certain teams in draft interviews he would not play for them... the list just goes on and on. No doubt that he is an incredibly talented player and will most likely be a 40-50 goal scorer in the NHL but I don't see him as a player who would take the Habs to a Cup victory, especially when we already have an undersized player in Cole Caufield in the top six and with Lane Hutson coming up in our D. Stats don't lie, size wins cups. We don't want to become the new Leafs with players putting up numbers in the regular season and then disappearing in the playoffs.

In the end of the day, Montreal picked players like Slaf and Reinbacher that given a typical draft class, should be going a lot lower than #1 and #5. Two years into our rebuild, having such high picks with significant magnitude and value those picks bring, the Habs didn't select franchise altering players. You can like Reinbacher and Slaf as players and like their characters and still think Montreal's drafting is utterly ridiculous. Two years in and we still don't have a franchise player and our core is just meh. I agree with Button, you dont look at things in isolation but scouring around the league and our division rival, their young core players are just better. Reinbacher is a fine player but when you see that Buffalo has Powers and Dahlin on top of all their forwards, when you see Ottawa with Stutzle and Tkachuk, Toronto with Marner and Matthews, Tampa with Stamkos and Hedman as their 2 highest picks in their rebuilds and Montreal comes out of it with Slaf and David, it's just uninspiring

Aren't Suzuki and Caufield just as good or better? Suzuki projected to be one of the best two way forwards in the game and Caufield projected to be a constant 40-50 goals player. Let's not forget that! If they're not franchise players they gotta be really close to it! And let's not forget Dach too who still has a lot of upside to show, who knows what his ceiling really is. But what really impresses me with the young core is the depth we have

    • @ren2871

@@rocky_hockey6447 no, I don't think you can objectively think Cole and Suzuki are better than Stutzle and Tkachuk given the production we saw from those 2 last year. Dach, Suzuki and Cole are good, but there are plenty of good players in the league, what Montreal has lacked for nearly 30 years is that ppg player, that true #1 center, true talent that you can build around. Dach, Suzuki and Caufield ideally would be complementary pieces. Just based on how we've drafted and who we have, I have my doubts we can overtake some of the other good young teams. Unless we get lucky and select top 3 in the next 2 drafts, I see us building the same exact flawed team we've been accustomed to since forever. That #1 and #5 pick should have yielded those franchise altering guys, not players that are routinely selected in the mid first round.

They have specific attributes that are among the best in the league like I've mentioned. Maybe not top 5 or top 10 players overall but Tkachuk and Stutzle aren't either in my opinion. It's debatable i guess. For Slaf and Reinbacher i know they aren't sexy picks and probably won't be among the best NHL players one day. But when you look at all the recent stanley cup champions the depth of overall talent outweighs the need for a superstar franchise player. And I do think they will become really solid NHL players. And we have a lot of those guys right now. And maybe there's one in the whole group that has higher upside that we don't know yet. I would have picked Michkov personally if it was my decision. If u dont agree Leonard is the better pick, i suggest u watch some of his highlights, the guy is a stud. He is sooo much fun to watch. He just isn't who we should have chosen with our 5th pick, they should have at least traded up to 8th or 9th spot (if they HAD to take Reinbacher), guess they didnt see the Kotkaniemi trade... then maybe it would have been SORT OF worth it, but still not really, but would have been better. Anyone who says the Habs need D more than offence right now, hasn't watched the Habs for the last 40 years, they CANT SCORE GOALS. Every time we see Leonard get a nice goal, or Michkov, it's gonna be that same kick in the nuts again, over and over for the next decade and a half, so buckle up Habs fans. And get ready for another year of finishing out of the playoffs, but high enough to not have a good pick, like they seem to do almost every year, and if they DO finish low enough to get a good pick, who knows now if they go that direction?? I lost all faith in this management, that i was so high on. Reinbacher's 3 goals will boost the Habs to stardom im sure... I have nothing against Reinbacher, im sure he will be a fine defensive defenseman, but the Habs NEED scoring. If u look at the team, it's not hard to see they need scoring, I still feel like i got kicked in the nuts, again and again.

"Nobody saw it coming"... Maybe in your echo chamber, but in others Reinbacher was highly rated and fifth on some lists. Mathias Brunet (La Presse) and Snake Boisvert were happy with this pick (though they would have preferred Michkov) and they also think Ryan Leonard is way overhyped, even predicting the Caps will regret picking him so high! Leonard is limited offensively and benefits from his more talented linemates in their mind. We'll have to wait and see...

Good D make you win. Look at Las Vegas/Edmonton this Spring. If Carlson, Fantini or Smith were available, I think they would have take one of them. But between a good D and Leonard, the good D will have more impact. Eric Faille, a Quebecoishockey player that played with him in Switzeland compare him to Roman Josi. Maybe it s too much expectation, but he meant that from relatively young and unknown when R einbacher joined the club, he ended up driving the Power play. Playing against men. He s mature and smart, stong, fast, good in the too zones. Of course Michvov is interesting, but why would you pick a guy that prefer KHL to NHL? For me it tells what winning in NHL means for him : not much! Russian players are talented, but most of them don't compete hard. Remember the Sotchi olympic games with Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, and so many more... They collapsed. Mishkov is small and not very fast, I don't see him as a driving force in the NHL. A good D will play almost 30 minutes in big games while a good forward will play 15 to 20 minutes.

Here's are a few stats for all u people that are now switching and saying picking Reinbacher was the right pick, and that passing on Leonard or Michkov was the right thing to do.
Here is a list of how many players broke the 20 goal marker for the Canadiens... Let this sink in. Does management not know this?? Do they think RHP is going to solve this??? Or maybe Gally will revert back to 30 goal Gally all of a sudden, just turn back the clock??? Instead of having PLD and Leonard/Michkov, we got Newhook and Reinbacher, they are both fine players, but we need GOALS, and I know we need D, our D core was already coming along really good, and im sure there were some D we could have taken later in the draft, I think we did take a few more, 3 or 4. The pick sucks, and I hate that people are lying to themselves and saying that it's a good pick, that they did the right thing, i dont know, maybe it's therapeutic! (I realize it's done, and some people say there's no point in crying over it, and that's fine. But dont say it's a good pick, let me take that back, it IS a good pick, just not at 5. LOOK AT THIS SHIT...
    2022-23 - Three players
    2021-22 - TWO players,
2020-21 - ONE player broke the 20 goal mark,
    2019-20 - Two players

Unless makar or doughty are at 5 you pick a skilled forward. Shitty draft pick at 5 and trade with Colorado. Best draft since 2003 and we trade 2 picks . Montreal could have traded down with Philly and packaged 22 31, and 37 to move up in the mid teens. Then have 2 picks in the top 16. Passed on michkov, it's Denis Savard all over again.
