You can just tell how much Dr. Mike disagrees, yet he still remains super polite. Props to him for having that much self control.
So true, I would've thrown hands😂
Yeah it's very very difficult to do something like that. It needs a lot and lot of practice to perfection this.
Amen to that. Guidry is one step above Oz sorry but he is. But people are gullible believing anything. This guy is making huge dollars off this. The sad thing is this man is convinced he’s right but there are studies proving him wrong. Vitamin C is water soluble it’s excreted when we have too much take enough all you’ll get is diarrhea. Gun dry cherry picks. They’re not predisposed genetically to develop those diseases. Half science isn’t science
I like to believe this is what happens when highly intelligent and mature professions hold a discussion. No one takes things personally. They just discuss. Challenging ideas is so important. The problem is, so many people, at least now, take being challenged as attacked.
Except at the end. He started getting a bit snarky there. I do not blame him though, it is actually quite impressive how long it took him to get there. I would've lost it in the first 30 min probably
I would love Dr. Grundy as my lawyer. Dude will manipulate so much info in his favor and not back down. Honestly it’s impressive.
He’s not wrong in a lot of his points. It’s just that the risk of confusion among the general public on what to eat greatly outweighs the advice he’s trying to give. In a lot of cases, both sides in various parts of the video (not all) present viable solutions for you and when contextualized can be a benefit to you!
@@rappercentral703he is mostly wrong
@@rappercentral703 The points he's not wrong about are still so blown out of proportion or so nichely applicable, according to the data cited by the other two competent doctors who aren't out to make money off their fad diet books, as to be practically useless.
@@rappercentral703 Saying he's not wrong is a lot of his points is similar to me saying "You can not die of heart disease if you shoot yourself in the head". This statement is very true, but the implication that I am trying to make is not correct.

Honestly I have so much respect for the woman in this video, Dr. Danielle Belardo. She seems like an expert on this subject and practically every sentence she utters has evidence to back her up. I wish she was getting more appreciation in these comments just because of the absolute class and professionalism she displays. I wish the video gave her more credit as well. Her name is not even in the title yet in my opinion she carried the entire discussion.
Dr. Belardo. I enjoyed your contributions, intelligence and delivery. 💯❤️from 🇨🇦
Appearances can be deceiving. Take a moment and investigate from what sources she receives her funding for research. I worked on a UC medical school campus I know the system inside and out.
Her ignorance on some subjects discussed are startling. She's just another apologist for big Pharma and big medicine.
When it comes to smoking, neither she nor Gundry understand the principle involved that makes one safe and the other pernicious: how tobacco leaves are cured and how lung cancer and coronary heart disease are the primary effects of the modern process using fungi (yeast + sugar).
Mad respect Doc Daniel.

Gotta give Dr Gundry credit for freely walking into the lions den. 🤣

This family care provider is an insecure and emotionally loaded bully who is triggered and left speechless when a patient confronts him with the apple/fruit facts!
His medical knowledge and debating skills are so li ited that in order to confront Dr. Gundry, he had to bring a real physician lady. He did not have the knowledge or the psychological strength to debate the subject alone. Therefore he needed a guardian dog.
Dr Gundry please do not fee pigs with your pearls of wisdom....you are wasting your time. This shallow PCP is not prepared to receive your knowledge.
PCPs have in general a vast but Shallow knowledge and with a few exceptions they are not the brightest. This breed of providers can not even come close to the IQ of Neurosurgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, neurologists, etc. This PCP lack of deep knowledge coupled with an insecure personality manifested as an egofistic bully is a volatile combination resulting in misinformation.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this episode. I read his book without knowing any of the controversy and I feel quite embarrassed that I didn’t think about it more critically. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle but after reading his book I dropped my fruit intake by over half and stopped eating beans + legumes as often because he drove the ‘lectins are awful for you’ message so hard and I was scared I was causing harm to my body. I’m so happy to bring those back into my diet again, I especially missed fruit a lot. Thank you again!
You are blaming him for your own inability to use logic. If you pressure cook beans the harm is gone. If you ferment beans the harm is gone. How you handle your own diet is not Gundry's fault. He delivered the information. You must figure out what steps you take to reduce the bad food intake to some better level on your own. He can't do that for you. The truth is in poison hotlines (Google it). Under-cook your beans and the lectins will be even more active and prove that Gundry does speak in truth.
I think he makes many good points. I wouldn't dismiss him that easily.
Hey, you don't know what you don't know. I think we good because...
We are not medical doctors (well, I'm not) and we have to rely on our judgement of how informed they are. They don't have all the answers either, no matter how reasonable, thoughtful, and informed their brain is; so right off the bat it's gonna be hard to find the answers. I think we're doing great because we are searching for answers by watching this medical video. Lots of obstacles.
My mom still loves gundry, but like you, I think he's a book-selling, unethical quack who will never change their mind no matter what they might of been able to learn. He has another book coming out after all, and he wants more $. Thanks for writing what you wrote.
Well you might wanna do an about face again cuz lectins have mostly nothing to do with fruits
@@amianderson8866 Its hilarious for you to view Gundry as someone who just wants more money off his books considering that Doctor Mike likely makes far more money off of what he is doing here on CZcams. It is also far more likely that doctors and dieticians who disagree with Gundry are also paid off by the big food companies and pharmaceutical manufacturers since he clearly goes against the grain versus their big dollars.
I don't follow Gundry's rules completely only because it is impossible due to stores and restaurants not making the right foods available to do it. But I think he is far more accurate than the majority. I have been able to prove it through my own change of habits even without fully following his yes/no food list.
Can confirm this works. I've been eating cigarettes, smoking cheese, and inhaling fermented beans all my life and I am currently over 200 years old.

It’s so nice to see this! Usually this stuff lives in different worlds and bubbles, we need more conversations like these! Also, please someone give an award to these two for patience!
My son was failure to thrive…I stopped eating lectins while breast feeding and he stopped the bloody diarrhea and started gaining weight. This advice was given to me by a PhD nutritionist, maybe it’s from this guy.
Not all people react to the same substances or have issues. Plant anti nutrients, toxins, intolerances, build ups, gut auto immune issues, sensitivity issues, one shoe didn’t fit everyone.
Many people have gluten and lectin and oxalate issues. Almonds have lectins and cyanide in them. Spinach causes lots of oxalate issues. Many people have fructose absorption issues and fructose is metabolized by the liver and is toxic if too much is ingested. Are we learning all this when we hear that all fruit is good, all plants don’t cause issues? I’m not gluten intolerant but I can respect that many people are, and maybe it’s a glyphosate intolerance issue? We always need to be open to better and flexible analysis and expanding science.
The whole podcast in a nutshell

I tried his diet for a year and nothing changed. See why anecdotes aren’t good evidence?
However, intermittent fasting does have some evidence to support it. So it’s possible that intermittent fasting was what had an effect rather than any other garbage you tried from Dr. Gaundry.

Ecactly. Big pharma doesn’t want healthy people and all these mainstream doctors are brainwashed big pharma employees.

“There’s a really good correlation between ice cream sales and shark attacks as well” - Dr. Mike, summed up this discussion perfectly 😂 CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION
What a coincidence,in this very long interview, that scene played just as i read your comment lol
If anyone would like to see more random correlations, there is a paper out there listing random correlations (like cheese consumption and dicovorce rates). They show graphs that seem to have the same shape, but are completely disconnected from one another.

The good, worthy of eating apples Dr. Gundry is talking about are called antique apples.
Old, usually smaller, often not so attractively colored varieties with lineages that can go back hundreds of years whose health benefits have not been hybridized out of them.
There are commercial orchards all over the United States that specialize in growing these healthy & unique varieties for direct sale to the public.
And too there are a number of nurseries here that provide antique apple trees for planting in your own yard, ones that produce the kind of healthy fruit Dr. Gundry recommends.
I’ve heard for years that a healthy gut is the best thing a person can do. It seems that these doctors will only do something if there are studies and “scientific fact”. How about deducting what has changed between the American diet and the diet of hundreds or thousands of years ago.
“Who’s overeating fruit??” I genuinely loved this debate.

You can over eat fruit, too much sugar/fructose is too much. Period.
Fruitarians. Vegans with binge eating disorder. People who love to feel physically full yet not satisfied at all and sh!t themselves to death after constant bloating. @@UandMeDasame Ah yes. The "Have you tried [single food] diet?" comment comes.
The issue is you can get one good rheumatologist and 25 "bad" ones, which Dr Mike makes clear that the health system doesn't give doctors enough time to go through with every patient exactly what to do how to overcome their illness. Gundry "provides a solution" and like the individual is being listen to.
That is main problem, doctors might have the answer (which might be correct) but they don't communicate it well enough for the individual to achieve success or patient misunderstands what is and isnt required of them.
Gundry says some stuff that is off the cuff soundbites that are incredibly misleading but if you listen more closely and get to the crux of what he is saying, it is to eat a balanced Mediterranean diet (which is the same as what most cardiac doctors say as well).

Personally I believe this depends on your circumstances. A lot of people would not benefit from his diet. But from someone who struggles to loose weight and have many gut problems that if were not addressed could have and were significant decreasing my quality and life. His diet was a lifesaver to me. Its not something I believe anyone can live on for forever. I am adding foods back into my diet slowly. But this diet has quite literally transformed my life. I have so much more energy. Whether you believe in this diet or not my blood levels with my thyroid problems and gut problems (hashimotos, cebos, and cirs) have gotten significantly better. I know I could get hate for this comment but I do believe it works. But it seriously depends on circumstances and if you are sick enough to try the diet. I also do not think it is for everyone. The modern medications I tried didnt help at all. Some people may not believe that but modern medicine cost me a lot of energy and more gut issues. HIS DIET WORKED FOR ME, IT DOES NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE!!!
I think the problem with someone like Gundry and other diet gurus like him is he promotes his way as “the only way.” It be one thing if he claimed the diet may help some people and not others, but that is not what he does. He has to sell his method to the max because that is how he makes his big bucks.
So heartening to see a good-hearted discussion/debate where evidence and reason are employed. Gives me hope...

I agree, and I think this is a good argument for understanding logic/rhetorical tools, because it helps you see the shape of the conversation and how it does (or does NOT) actually address the points being made. For example, constant shifting of the conversational focus, contradicting yourself, distractions, talking in circles, are all things Dr. Gundry is doing to avoid a direct back-and-forth about the solidity of his own arguments.

This "debate" if you will, is probably the single most absolute perfect example I've ever come across, of why I always find myself asking the question, "Who the hell are we sopposed to listen to?"
I highly doubt there's ever been a more confusing time on this earth, because in this modern age of mass information, that's exactly what it is: confusion at it's best.
Something very important happens at 1:29:23 when Dr Mike asks Dr Gundry “what do you know that GI and Rheumatology docs don’t know?”.
Gundry says “that all of this comes from intestinal permeability”. That’s essentially quackery. BUT, on the other end what most docs don’t know is nutrition and even if they do, they don’t have is time to spend to help patients with it.
So odds are that Gundry IS helping improve (if not making perfect) their nutrition, and nutrition is powerful. I’ve seen huge reductions in inflammation esp when weight loss ensues. But if a patient with sensitivity to FODMAPS gets a plan that cuts back on their aggravator that’s causing GI symptoms, anxiety and overall sensitivity to their condition and it’s reduced but their told it’s because of reducing “GI permeability”, though it has little to nothing to do with it, then “I’m on an anti-gut permeability diet” is what they’ll megaphone to the world because guru Dr Gundry or Hyman said so - true or not.
But at the end of the day, the patient feels better. And that’s good. The bad is when the arrogance of ignorance bleeds into the public sphere and Gundry starts blasting apples etc. A little knowledge is dangerous at work.
But shame on the medical system for letting so many patients the likes of which see Gundry (and pay a lot to do so most likely) fall through the cracks.
Doctor you did amazing in this conversation, not being too aggressive but also calling the doctor out when he gave specific examples. This is a perfect way to talk to people who you dont agree with.
Honestly, despite Dr. Grundy's unwillingness to back down from some of his unsubstantiated stances, his ability to take criticism without becoming "overly" defensive or rude is admirable. This is exactly how to have a civilized argument about something. The hope is to learn from each other and hopefully move closer to the reality on the topic one way or the other and respect the others position to some degree. They were all able to agree on the most important aspects which is focusing on a plant-based diet without highly processed foods, but disagreed on the quality and usefulness of mechanisms and anecdotal evidence in providing recommendations to the public.
I wish Dr. Grundy was more willing to acknowledge how his claims can be confusing and misleading to the public especially when he respects the science and the nuance of the claims he's making, but it was a good source of discussion for how scientific recommendations should be made and acknowledges how anecdotal evidence still has some meaning since it can lead to more evidence based trials and studies that can let us learn more which then can lead to additional recommendations.
It is also a typical example of how academic discussions and disagreements proceed. Name-calling and aggression is not part of the practice of academic discussion. We praise this as if this is an accomplishment, but this is the only kind exchange that warrants the title of discussion. Any other form is juvenile.

You said it. I had all types of feelings throughout this interview. I guess Dr. Gundry don’t wanna be sued and have to pay back all the money. That’s why he backtracks, talks in circles and will never say he was wrong by updated science. The unfortunate part is there are so many doctors like this, holding on to belief and dogma as evidence show otherwise, and putting patients health and life in danger. That’s why we cannot be dogmatic and latching on to one doctor, one health lifestyle, and our heads in the sand about other pertinent information out there, so when we go to our doctor, we are educated and open-minded, and it need to go both ways. Beware of dismissive doctors that says I study this, I wrote the book, I have so many viewers and followers so I’m the authority.
The older doctor I actually like because he gives a different medical perspective on things we may be overlooking due to other risk factors that combine with smoking. Granted it’s anecdotal discussion but it’s a healthy discussion to have. There are so many chemicals in a cigarette. It’s possible that ONE could potentially have a benefit but again, if nicotine really is a good mitochondrial coupler why not prescribe it in tablets so we aren’t smoking it? Why not patches with those diet changes? Would we see similar results with patches
I love Dr Gundry. I take Total Restore and it changed my health significantly. He does not promote smoking, he’s just saying that it’s amazing how smokers in the blue zones are still in good health due to their lifestyle and food choices which are chemical free and organic. You are exactly right. It's only good for some of us, though, because bad ideas can reinforce stubborn people.

Dr Gundry is speaking a lot of truth on ROS and mitochondria. I’ve been involved in science and cellular metabolism for decades, and there is a lot more to this world than what any of us think or believe.
Our medical system, food and nutritional strategies are way off and this is why our chronic and metabolic disease rates are sky high. We are eating the wrong foods and we are getting very sick.
Saturated fat is not an issue to human health. We completely got this science wrong. And that is just one of many, many examples of bad science and poor assumptions.
