Starting with the hand gesture of the pinched fingers, so many people around the world are quite familiar with Italian body language but do they actually have the slightest clue of the meaning of the most common Italian hand gestures? It seems like they come in handy when mocking Italians is the goal but what about using them to speak Italian without knowing the Italian language?
Using hand gestures in the language was already a thing in ancient Rome, so it's deeply rooted. However, it's probably after the fall of the Western Roman Empire that the aid of the hands in the language became essential. Immigrants and colonizers arrived from everywhere: Carolingians, Normans, Saracens, Visigoths, German tribes, Austrians, French, etc. All of a sudden the local language was not dominant anymore and resorting to the use of the hands became very practical.
According to a study, Italians use around 250 hand gestures in everyday conversation. While most Italians don't even realize how much they depend on them, for a foreigner it could be quite useful to learn at least the basic ones to communicate with locals.
It's important to understand that the Italian culture is very vast and there are Italians who emigrated all over the world. Also, because Italy was fragmented in small kingdoms for many centuries, sometimes not only the spoken dialects are completely different languages but also the meaning of certain gestures could vary, slightly or even substantially. For instance, some Italian Americans use a gesture that in their interpretation is very rude and shows anger while the same gesture in most of Italy, especially Southern, is used to simply say "I don't care, whatever...". And what about the "rock on!" sign? Did you know you could actually get in trouble in Italy by using that very sign that in so many countries would pump you up at a rock concert?
So it's important to know the meaning of the Italian hand gestures but it's also essential to know which hand gestures to avoid because they're considered rude and offensive in Italy or by Italians.
Watch this video and the meaning of some iconic Italian hand gestures will be explained to you in a funny way. Please share this video with your Italian friends or with your friends who like Italian culture or are about to travel to Italy.

I love the Italian language and I’m slowly learning it
that's great😉
The best Italian lessons! Such a great way of explaining through the lessons that it is a pleasure learning. I love travelin to Italy (sono di Croazia - is it correct? 😄) and I can't wait to go back to Italy and test my new skills (and hope not to embarrass myself😄). This is an other great video from Dolce Vita duo and since I am from Croatia we have some of the same hand gestures. It was fun to see this. Bravissimo! And thank you!
Grazie mille Mislav!!! Someone else from Croatia also made a very nice long comment about hand gestures😀
When you say "sono di..." you should always add the city otherwise it's "sono + nationality". Sono croato or sono di Zagabria, for instance;)))
Happy you like our videos, wish you nice holidays:))
Que bello! Mi piace molto! Sono turca and it is so interesting to see we actually have a few (like number 3 and 7) in common. We also use hand gestures a lot. Saluti da Turchia! :)
Great, I love it😉
Molto grazie!! You're the best!

Wow, you just made our day!!!! Grazie mille🤩🤩🤩
@@DolceVitaChannel I mean it!!
One of my ex classmates got widowed a couple of years ago. She is still beautiful over 50 :) and so an Italian man fell in love with her. She had learned Italian at secondary school but has forgotten it almost completely. They try to communicate in English. So I have recommended DOLCE VIta to her to make it possible for her to reach 2 goals at a time: learning English while learning Italian. She loves it!!!
Keep up the good work, dear colleagues! You are both unique and lovely. :)

You guys are amazing as always! I am from Israel and the last gesture you've showed that in Italy means "what do you want " in Israel means "wait a moment". As most of Israelis are not patient, this gesture is widely used. We even recently created the similar emoji🤌
Lol, that's so great!! I was in Israel right before the pandemic, I loved it and realized you also use your hands a lot🤩

Hi Luca, I'm from Brazil, but as you, I speak English as a second language. You know something, I realized that two years ago you sold two tickets to visit the Coliseum for me and my mother, small world!
Hi Luiz, nice to meet you. If you were in Rome perhaps you might've seen me somewhere in the centre working as a tour guide, however I've never done the colosseum and most of all I've never ever sold tickets to anyone so it must've been someone who looks like me, lol😂Anyway, hope you enjoyed the eternal city🤩
We certainly use the afraid gesture here in Portugal...
interesting because I saw Cristiano Ronaldo use that gesture in a game and I wondered if he picked it up here in Italy or if it was also used by Portuguese, now I know, grazie😀😀😀

Ironically the rock'n'roll gesture also has Italian roots. It was introduced by Dio (Padavona) who copied it from his Italian nonna. However she herself used it in order to protect from and exorcise demons of Dio who she thought was worshiping devil.
lol. Yeah, I knew that. The thing is, in Italian culture if the "horns" point up they mean "cuckold" but if they point down they're supposed to ward off bad luck or the evil eye🤪😂
Plot twist: she was using it to say devil was a cuckold dhdhjdhdhd

4:59 Are you affraid?
6:15 Shout your mouth
6:40 It's perfect! ( not just related to food but in general )
7:02 For some reason we call it "bosanski grb" or "bosnian coat of arms"; it means "S*** you" of "F you"
7:26 - You/He/She are/is crazy
7:51 - We use it when we repeat something that is important or when someone is not being reasonable

I loved your content guys but I think you put way too many "sound effects". Your videos are much better without them in my humble opinion.
Thank you so much for your content

Hi! I am from Turkey and some of these hand gestures have different meanings
6. Almost looks like the one in Turkish and it means wolf and wolf symbolizes Turks so it’s usually used by nationalist politicians 😅😅
7. Means cutting in Turkish hand gestures and if you’re angry while using it, it means that “I’ll cut you” 😅😅
8. Usually means you’re asking something’s price
12. Is the same
13. Is very bad meaning but friends can use it to each other and it means “I’m/you’re fvcked up” depends on the situation 😅😅😅
14. Means “are you crazy?” 😄
15. Means the meal you eat tastes so much delicious 😂😂😂
Thank you so much sharing 🙏🤩

Salve buona sera amico amica come stai tutto apposto

Iranians and the Italians are almost identical!
oh, wow, I didn't know, that's funny, lol🤩
Perche' i gesti derivano dalla colonizzazione Greca a loro volta in contatto con quella persiana.
The first gesture with a hand out of a chin (chin flick) in American Sign Language (ASL) means "go to hell"... After that, we usually hit the side of one hand on the palm of another hand, like a direction...
Also a sign that looks like "rock music" is a bad word in ASL. Usually, it means "bull" but in a context can mean "bulls**t" sorry, lol
lol, also, as far as I know the ASL "I love you" sign is kind of similar to the "rock on" sign, therefore should be used with caution in Italy😂
@@DolceVitaChannel Yes, in "I love you" also this sign like in "bull" or "rock on"... Everything the same
