Great video. I own the fx30 and it is my principal video camera. I am not a wildlife filmmaking, but also I have problems with reflections in the screen in a sunny day. I want to have a minimalist setup and for this I found a plastic lightweight optic viewfinder for the camera screen (Kamerar) and works for me (also I use tripod occasionally, most of time handheld). You have convinced me to try the portkey instead of a traditional monitor (I also use the same smallrig cage). Saludos.
Thanks. Yes I have been loving it. An having the choice of not taking it when lets say filming in a hide. Like the size and weight to but I don’t think it will take much punishment. still looking for better options to mount it though.
Thanks Benjamin for the heads up on this. I have a Ninja V that I can use as a more built out option with my FX3 but I was also looking for a reasonable/ affordable EVF.

Great video! Was looking forward to it. I like the point that I can put it on a arm and adjust its position to my place in the blind. Wish it had hdmi out! Would of loved to see the screen layout. Time to go shopping. Thanks again for the video.

Yes had a small rig monitor arm and a full rig to make it more adaptable from different viewing points
Hi Benjamin, have you found any issues with viewing the screen, especially when not looking dead centre into the finder? I bought one and returned as I found when viewing into it from slightly off centre the screen appeared distorted, affecting critical focusing. Also the included right angle hdmi attachment was faulty, causing some strange colourings. Confused me to start with until I discovered the problem. Shame as Portkeys are good, I use their Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 inch 4K HDMI Touchscreen DSLR Camera Control Field Monitor |2200 nit | Bluetooth with the FX30. But, like you much prefer a EVF.
Not noticed that with my unit. Will double check again when I can. Which model was this with? I am using the LEYE iii. Just got back from Africa for two weeks and it worked very well the whole trip.
I've used it and personally i didn't feel like it even came close to the quality of the a7s iii viewfinder. better than nothing but it's a bummer that sony can't make an external version of that and sell it.

I just got the voking lcd viewfinder. What in you opinion is the difference between this evf and a lcd viewfinder?
If it works it works! U will have less bits to worry about with the lcd viewfinder. Not worrying about power and cable runs from your camera. But u also lose out on the flexibility of adjusting it. Also lose the functionality of the lcd screen, like touch focus. But will keep you rig smaller and lighter.

You could pick up a Zacuto (not ‘os’) Gratical X on ebay cheap and then pay for the HD upgrade. Cost me about £800. My LEYE broke after being outdoors in rain, very disappointing.
Yes realised I said it wrong after I made the video 🙄. I keep a eye out for that. Though they look rather big and bulky. I already struggle with kit allowance for when I fly.
@@BenjaminSmail true, they are pretty big. The Gratical Eye is very small and you can get battery addon fot it now, but then you’re in a higher spend.

currently using a monitor but always curious about these EVF's. Have you had issue with losing subjects as they move while you are trying to get them? It's definitely trickier to line up with a monitor but I do like to be able to look at the screen and look at the subject in case it suddenly goes out of frame you can quickly line it up again.
Yes I really struggle when using a monitor even the back screen I find more harder than with a EVF. Always prefer a EVF and just so used to finding my subject with it

How is focusing? I’m concerned about being able to keep a sharp shot with such a small screen.
Yes it's still not perfect with the EVF due to its size. But find it a lot better than the lcd screen. An you can always switch on peaking with a touch of a button.

It will hold a knock because its light. But would not trust it in bad weather. Not had it long enough to tell. But it does not feel very solid.

Makes the portkeys about 100x better in all ways to use.
I tried one of those portkeys ages ago and thought they were good 'on paper', but absolutely rubbish to actually use with the poor viewing angles and no magnification. If you are ever flush with cash, I can't recommend the Gratical Eye enough as the best 3rd party EVF by a country mile. If you ever get the chance to use one you will never want to go back, especially in the harsher weather 😉

Rumors out there say that Sony will issue a new highend apsc camera before summer of 2023. Have u heard anything futher, specs, etc? A 7000 apsc camera seems to be the rumors. Will be interesting to see how it stacks up against the latest Fuji cameras. If such a camera merges with EVF do u plan to pick up one for your wildlife, bird photography-video? 😎😎
Not heard to much. Guessing it will have the same sensor as the FX30 but more photo driven. Will probably have all of Sony’s new toys like A7RV auto focus and same features as the ZV-E10. Hopefully it will be like a mini A1.

that eye piece on the evf sucks major ass ! the glass sucks and the squishy piece unprofessionla , you gotta do the mod on it , just search from toy to tool !

This is a terrible viewfinder. Worst purchase I’ve ever made and I’ve purchased a ton of gear thru the years. I’m stunned this company continues to sell this piece of crap. The loupe literally demagnifies the image and the distortion you get when even slightly off axis is ridiculous. And the cherry on top is that absurd eyecup. Do your homework. This guy has no clue.
