#canon #canonc70 #sonyfx3 - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I really love the image from the C70. It has beautiful colours and the "softness" looks more filmic than other cameras with a quite digital sharp look.
It’s gorgeous forsure!
Congrats Thomas! So excited for you!
Appreciate ya! So stoked
Excited for you fam! love seeing your growth!
thanks dude! likewise!
Great explanation of your reasoning and logic for the switch. I also appreciate how you also classified the FX3 - it helps me better understand how to integrate it into my currenty Ursa 12k/BMPCC6K setup.
thanks! always hard to put these thoughts into words as I often spend loads of time mulling over it haha
Yeah! the fx3 is super capable, it's pretty insane
Congrats on the KX but I’m surprised you left the convenience of internal NDs.
Thanks! Yeah this is a topic I definitely want to cover
My thoughts have changed a bit haha
@@thomas.kovacik Interesting. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it.
Thanks for making this video. I really went back and forth on deciding what body would make the most sense for the type of work that comes my way. I went with the C70 knowing that most of my work will be one man band - run and gun. I too go back and forth on the softness of the image and where that works and doesn't work. The KX is a great tool and is still on my radar as the next step (at least with what's out there today), so I appreciate your commentary on how it works for you. The shots you integrate from your projects look amazing, so I have much respect for your observations!
course! that first step is so valuable and most people don't even take the time to figure out what makes the most sense, so good on ya for that!
The c70 CRUSHES, it's such an insane camera for the price. Thank you so much for the kind words!
welcome to the kx fam. can't wait to see all that you make with the kx.
appreciate it Tyler! really stoked to work with it
Congrats man, appreciate this detailed breakdown
thanks man! lots more on the way
Damn, that looks so clean. Can’t wait to see your creations! Enjoy, bro!
Thanks! Stoked on it
Sick video man! I'm loving the fx3 for all the reasons you mentioned, but the KX seems absolutely sick !
thank ya! absolutely love the fx3- you can do so much with it! yeah it really is- it's one of those cameras that is gonna be brought out for heavy hitter jobs, but I'm psyched to get the fx3 out on set more
stoked for you man, sounds like you made a great choice!
Thank ya! Really happy with my decision
saw your FX3 rig earlier, happy to see how well you are doing!
Also intereseting that you still use the Sennheiser MKE600. Bought this one recently and I hope this will go a long way with me too.
really like your video style, keep it up!
thanks! Yeah loving that mke600, have no reason to upgrade for the time being!
I'm hoping to upgrade to as well. Currently, I'm running with the Sony FX30, which is quite good. I've been looking at the C70 for a while. That being said, the one thing that has drawn me towards the Komodo X is the faster boot up time. Which apparently runs about 20 seconds. Which compared to the 2+/- minutes of the OG is quite an improvement. And as a low budget filmmaker, the faster boot up time is important. I'm still not sure what my next upgrade will be. But, if I can swing the Komodo X I will be quite satisfied I'm sure. Great commentary.
Cut scene: 1 year later - why I sold my red Komodo x. Jk, just jealous 😅 seriously though, your work looks great and it’s exciting you can grow with this camera system 💪
hahah I hope not!
I could see myself selling if I needed to upgrade but I'll cross that bridge when I get there haha. Hoping this camera is plenty for my client work for at least a few years
I could see adding a burano or raptor at some point, but there's no major rush or push for that
Thank you for the kind words! Excited to put it to work
If he did, I’d say go for it. If you’re serious about filmmaking/cinematography (in contrast to just videography), it’s beneficial for your career to have experience with as much cameras bodies and their pro/cons, different colour sciences, features etc as possible. If a producer or cinematographer asks you to work on a film, you want to step on set with as much knowledge as possible of any camera
@@thomas.kovacikI wouldn’t want a burano due to the rolling shutter. Global shutter on a red (I know not all red models have it) would be a huge factor for me
As a Komodo X owner, I saw you coming from a mile away haha welcome to the family bro!
hahah I love it! yeah right when I saw it announced I was like "oh no" haha
Subbed. I’m a canon shooter but I love the way you did this process of why it doesn’t work for you. So many people usually breeze through the practical parts and go straight to specs or whatever every one else around them is shooting that you never really get the feeling they’ve thought it through. Also as a canon shooter, I’m definitely looking forward to being busy enough to need a red or even a Sony high teir cam.
thanks! always great to hear- I try to only share thoughts / opinions when I've spent loads of time with gear.
Love that C70, but hoping they come out with some new stuff soon. I feel ya! RED + Sony Burano / similar are all great
Congrats dude!
Thank ya!
Very interesting as always. The c70 still works for me, but I’m really happy that your new camera suits your needs now. Thanks for creating the video for us.
thank you! appreciate it, yeah that c70 is really special. I wish I could've kept it
The Komodo X/OG is my dream camera. Don't think I'll ever own one but I'm always happy seeing someone's excitement when they get their hands on one! Can't wait to see your upcoming images! Have fun.
it's such a rad lil camera! crazy that red made one
haha thanks! really stoked to shoot with it, it's a blast
@@thomas.kovacik Godspeed!
Love your Videos Bro
cheers! stoked to hear that
Woo! It’s out 🎉 Congrats Thomas on the Komodo X!
Thank ya!
Looking forward to seeing some more videos with the Red
thanks! Me too, def getting some scripted out in the near future
Thanks for the vid, I was wondering since when I saw the c70 for sale on share grid .
course! yeah haha glad I got this out - some nuance in my situation forsure
Still a great camera!
Dude, you can crush any video. I want to see you put together an iPhone 15 log project
haha thanks man! Would be fun, I've seen some clips online and it looks really good for a phone haha
@@thomas.kovacik do you think a time will come that for an EDC, an iPhone paired with iOS dehancer etc can replace an x100 or Ricoh?
could! all depends on preference
I'd still carry a camera even if the iPhone was viable
Just subbed. Great video! I watched this after just watching why you switched to C70. I was wanting to upgrade to my first cinema camera with the C70. As someone who isn't a pro DP and has funds for just a hobbyist/occasional CZcams travel videos, would you still recommend C70? I have some CanonRF glass. I am someone who ,like your video on why you bought it, is looking for built in ND's, C-Log 2, and great dynamic range. I also can't upgrade till probably 3-9 months and wonder if new tech will be out by then. Any thoughts? Great video.
thanks! Yeah for hobby / CZcams travel you can't go wrong with a mirrorless cinema camera - something like the r5c, fx3, xh2s. The c70 crushes but it's definitely a more professional camera that is geared towards heavy workloads. You can get alot done with less
Canon SHOULD be releasing something soon, but we have no idea. It's a great camera but I have a hard time recommending it for a hobbyist- even a fx3 can be overkill haha
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks so much for the response. I think I want to stay in the Canon ecosystem due to my lens. I appreciate your suggestions but will probably still land on the C70. I plan on doing a lot of travel videos and just want the best quality I can get without going too mental.
I can afford the C70 😉😉
@@ANomadsMovingPictures definitely! can't go wrong with the c70 then
Interesting that you got so much for your C70 in the US. I live in China and used C70 are going for $2.5-3k here. I'm actually thinking of picking up a used one at that price as a B-Cam (A-Cam is the C300 mk3 for now). You're right though - we are living in great times with so many options being out there for us to work with.
yeah! I sold it at a good time- plus it was in really good condition
Yeah it's a great time to be a buyer right now! That would be perfect alongside your c300 mk3
I couldn't do without ND filters built in. They're a huge part of what pushed me to the three C500 Mark II bodies I now use.
I feel! That’s an incredible camera
I own the R5C and the KX, and I definitely love the flexibility of R3D RAW for shooting in underwater challenging environments. However, for anything else, I appreciate the versatility of the R5C as a camera. It can shoot 8k 60 raw, 6k in S35 RAW, and 4K 120. Plus, the ability to switch to an R5 with a switch is great. I opened your video because I'm looking to add a C70 to my fleet, and you just sold yours for a KX haha!
rad! It's great having two cameras like that forsure! There's times where I'd grab one over the other
Haha I love it, I think the c70 would pair really well if you have the funds
It's like an incredible mix of both cameras. So versatile and solid, especially if you run it stripped down
For me, I couldn't justify having my fx3, KX and C70 so it had to go haha
You are on point about the c70 having a soft creamy look. For versatility I will need to get the FX3, I’m wondering how realistic it is to edit the s log 3 footage in post to soften it and make it look more like the c70. Is this too much of a hassle or completely realistic?
yeah it's really lovely for alot of projects!
Yeah I think you can match the fx3 to that style really well- lensing is #1. I've been happy with the sony 24-70 gmii and vintage lenses for a softer look
The fx3 is really dang versatile and can get really close to the image from the c70. the c70 is just too easy to get a good look haha
Nice concise reasoning.
thank ya!
cool, look forward to see how you think the komodo compares to c70 image quality wise. I heard the sensor is the same as a canon full frame cropped down?
Thanks! Yeah so far the KX edges it out with depth / motion cadence
I feel like it also has more DR / better highlight rolloff. I'd have to rent the c70 to do a side by side test but as of now I just feel like there's more depth to the r3d, which is expected
Not sure! haven't looked into that but that would make sense I think
Nice choice I was thinking, buying a Komodo x to be my main cinema camera and the c70 as my run and gun came, colour match better and I would have to have two different lens systems
Have you tried the autofocus on the Komodo x with your rf lens?
Thanks! That’s a solid combo too
Haven’t tried it much! I tested it quick before I sold my rf24-70, seems decent
I’m going all EF lenses or rf cine zooms for now
id always say - the more that camera is giving you in terms of when its covering clients specs, makes your work process easier like color sciense, resolution, autofocus - more you can focus on your skills and being better at it. i still feel like BMP6k is a good camera, but it has so many limitations when you are one-man agency on the set, so it really limits your creative abilities.
I'm curious, what does it feel like the black magic is holding you back on? I keep considering getting one
id say for me the focus issue and the way i need to rig the camera would be the most annoying thing.@@SamEmilio2
Truth! So many variables that make specific jobs a lot easier
For the bigger jobs it’s nice to have something like a KX
The BMD cameras are a great value but they forsure fall short with the ergos / rigging. Sure you can get by with it, but I want zero issues / compromises. If I brought one out into the mountains I’d be worried about it the entire time
Still a great value for image quality especially at that price. But lots of compromises which is fine, that’s why there’s other cameras haha
great footage from the c70
Thank ya!
Thank you for your praise of the C70 (I just bought one). That said, You have legit annoyances with the C70 for your particular needs. I agree about the C70 "softness" but it's still great for my needs.I do documentary work and it's a good run-and-gun camera. I understood the pros and cons of the super35 sensor before I bought it. For me, this is good camera, though still overpriced IMHO (I bought mine used). I personally miss a EVF and I'm working on a DIY solution. I personally can't live without built-in ND but I'm seriously looking at the Panasonic S52 as my B and gimbal cam as it's just an incredible value for the feature set and image quality.
yes! it's such a great camera
Yeah for solo run n gun stuff it's so killer. I worked with one for a total of 2-3ish years and I was completely okay with the compromises during that time until recently haha
EVF would crush! I enjoyed that on the c200- I hope they make a new RF cinema camera in that c200 style body with EVF, I think alot of people would enjoy that
Built in ND is sooooo nice, that's one bummer moving into the red but I have some solutions im testing out
@@thomas.kovacik I came from a C100 M2 which was an amazing workhorse - if they had just made it full 4K 422 10 bit internal to SD with a decent Mbps they would have sold a million of them. I was disappointed with the C200 and didn't buy one - no internal 422 10bit to SD? REALLY? Canon makes decent cameras but reminds me of Apple - gives you just the minimum to be functional, but never breaks any new ground and doesn't give you enough - and always at a premium price. There truly is NO perfect camera!
I love it! yesss that would've been huge back then
The c200 was odd, 8bit 420 or heaaaavy raw haha
Yup there's no perfect camera, that's why I have the KX and FX3 now haha
Getting the Komodo x is going to be... wait for it... legendary!
There are some new rumors about a C70 mkii in Q4 2024. Would definitely make sense. I guess a mkii could be a banger.
Just give it FF 6k DGO and a working display hinge and it‘s a terrific camera. 💥
Hey i mostly shoot documentaries and lifestyle commercials. What camera would you recommend? Ive been looking at fx3/fx6, c70 & komodo. Currently use bmpcc4k but its lowlight and rigging is limited. Cheers!
love it! can't go wrong with any of those
Comes down to preference / lens systems / and other random features
The c70 would crush it especially if you want a RAW code
Komodo og is a bit more clunky
FX3 / FX6 are both incredible, no internal raw, dual base iso, autofocus, solid battery life etc
I would look and see what ecosystem you want to be in and dial in some other features that you need, can't go wrong with any of em thankfully
@@thomas.kovacik thanks Thomas! Yet to invest in any of the above ecosystems so that's a good point
also in the market for a komodo or komodo x, but congratulations man, things looking up for you.
heck yeah! can't go wrong with either. Definitely a different workflow but that R3D is sooooo good
Thanks! Really stoked for this year
Does it have much better IQ than blackmagic 6k ff? How much in percentage? Also thinking to switch from bmpcc to komodo og
I think it depends
on the BMD you get 6k, ff, open gate. BMD has its own "look", I enjoy it! It def feels closer to Komodo than the C70
The c70 has a dgo sensor, s35 buuuuut the dr / highlight rolloff is insanely smooth
Can't go wrong with either. I'd rather have the c70 for versatility, but the bmd is an incredible option if you have a smaller budget or don't mind having it rigged up 100% of the time
I've seen people run the bmd with no rig when traveling and that works well but I wouldn't like that for client work haha
I'd look at lens ecosystems, accessories, and overall workflow to help with the decision!
Komodo og is rad too. I'd prob rater have the bmd ff or c70
KX is on a whole new level though. It's like a komodo og mixed with c70 - best of both worlds in a way
@@thomas.kovacik yes, but price wise it’s also on the another level 😀All this IQ is funny thing, I have also the a7iv so sometimes the bm delivers much better image and sometimes it’s hard to differentiate
very true! that's a great observation. It really comes down to stuff in front of the sensor - lens, composition, mainly light, movement, colors and so on
Cameras are just data capturing tools with som features to make life easier haha
ive shot good / bad stuff on bmd, sony, canon and red haha
@@thomas.kovacik also partially true as I was so irritated with Sony as sometimes the colours went crazy and there were some mushiness in the shadows hard to describe, bm even if on paper has less dynamic range seems to have cleaner shadows maybe due to lack of internal processing in camera
Hey hey hey now, having that R5C the cinema side is a true cinema cam, the basic r5 is definitely not the same with video. That’s why them little bitty batteries can’t keep it powered lol 😂.
But congrats, it sounded like you were going to get a full blown cinema camera from what you said your desires were and what you’ve been shooting. And that red is a beast!!!
hahah I love it
it's such a sick lil camera but I wish they did some other things to it to really make it compete
hah true! Gotta get that power from somewhere! At least it has a fan haha
Thanks! Yeah it was due time to get something a bit more dedicated
This video got me looking at used C70s LOL! If Panasonic don't update the S1H very soon I'm grabbing a couple of C70s!!!
haha heck yeah! you can find them for sooo cheap nowadays
Great so see you having such succes in 2023! for me it was quite the opposite, i definetly need new approach. What contributed to your succes the most if u mind sharing?
thank ya! yeah it's been slow growth over the last handful of years
Lots of networking! It's been a work in progress since 2019, and looking back every job / step of the way led into the next
I took lots of work, worked for cheap or for free, and just invested in relationships. It's a win / win because I make new friends and working partners, they get videos, I get work, everyone wins haha
But yeah, networking is key
how do you rig for Gimbal? I'm curious to see your solutions for dynamic shot.Thx
I didn’t fly it with a gimbal but I had the bright tangerine cage with DJI baseplate so I could’ve stripped it down and put it on a rs3 pro easily
wow! C70 colors are amazing!
They’re so good!
Movie "The creator" was shot on FX3, this just goes to show u how much of a powerhouse that little camera is.
It’s one of the most versatile cameras out there!
Cool, thanks!
I think it’s wild that people want 6k delivery. It feels like yesterday when 1080p was perfect
I know right, I remember 4k first rolling out at the prosumer level
I don’t mind bc it makes cropping / stabilizing a lot nicer
Damn you are partly why I chose the C70...after watching that video you did
It’s still a great camera! My personal needs have changed though
The C70 is a great cinema camera, it just needs an update to a 8k sensor with CFexpress cards along with external ssd recording.
I agree! definitely needs a 6k or 8k sensor, cf express cards are a must, SDI would be really nice too. Wonder if the next one will be a c70 mkii or a new design
@@thomas.kovacik I'd definitely buy it if they use an 8k sensor!
You should shoot the R5C, its definitely more than an R5 with a Fan
haha I knowww I give canon a tough time for it, seems rad but not for me. been loving my fx3!
Canon is coming out with new cine cams this year. R5C actually has more DR than R5 and the codecs are different (same as C70). Watch out for IR pollution on the Komodo, its there.
Hopefully! It’s definitely time
Haha yeah + cine menu + fan, I clown canon a bit for the r5c but it really is a cool camera- just not for me
Will do! I have IRNDs that I’ll be using
Great move! Question- what is your solution for focus and ND filters
Thank you!
So far just pulling with hand from barrel
I plan to get a baseplate system to get rods to add a manual follow focus as well as wireless for bigger jobs
For ND I’m using my NiSi Fixed 3 and 6 stop IRND
They’ve been great bc I’m used to that workflow when using them on FX3.
I ordered but cancelled my kippertie revolva, I may end up getting one but I need to think about it some more. The dsmc3 monitor poses issues with that
I may try out the breakthrough x4 system, both fixed and VND
I’m also messing around with the idea of picking up a cine zoom and going mattebox / circular NDs haha
The fujinon mk 18-55 has a 82mm thread so it would be really easy
@@thomas.kovacik thanks for the breakdown! That's the one thing that I would miss from C70 (built in nds) well and AF, otherwise I would also go that route.
I also use tilta wireless system for manual focus and it works great when I have it on a car rig.
Good luck with the new camera man, it's a sick package! Would love to see a video comparing the 2 and talking more about the codecs and how much harder is it to color the image?
course! yeah I totally get that, it's still such a great and capable camera especially if you want to run it stripped down. It's so powerful that way
Great to know! I want to venture into that tilta system and get a handle with the focus wheel- maybe that'll be nice for cinema lenses while solo operating
Thanks! 100% that'll be on the way sometime
Lidar is there for focus 🖐️
@@HESSHHhave you tested it? How does it hold up to canon r5 or fx3?
Are people not aware of the C500 ii, Full Frame 6k. proper audio inputs, dual cfexpress slots, modular AF etc
I’m aware! It’s a rad camera forsure. Happy with my KX though
If you ever want or have a need to run a V Raptor X along with your KX for a project, let me know 😎
I’m doing everything I can to put it to work this year
dude yes! I'll def keep ya in mind
how are you liking the new X? it looks siiiiiick
@@thomas.kovacikright on man! I think it’s gonna be a great tool, obviously for shooting but also for connecting with other great filmmakers and DP’s. I’m really looking forward to that aspect of it!
Honestly, I literally just got it in earlier this week and I haven’t even had enough time to get it fully unpacked haha.
That’s my fun for the weekend though for sure.
I rented the regular V raptor a ton last year and love it though! It’s as close to a perfect camera as I’ve ever had.
and here I am literally debating on selling my Komodo for a c70
haha I dont blame ya! the c70 is an incredible camera
You have the OG or KX?
@@thomas.kovacik i have the Og
yeah I can feel that, the KX is a solid mix of the komodo og / c70
FX3 imagine is years behind c70/c300mkIII....visually speaking....
Ehhh if you know what you’re doing it close
Buuut, there’s an edge for sure. That’s why I got a KX instead of going back to only FX3
Fair enough.
still a great camera though! I'm still recommending it to most shooters
I think RED is the only brand that could break my Canon loyalty. But for now all my Canon's do what I need and I still love the image.
My guy, you're artistic professional eye messed you up. Once you saw the potential in the Komodo, you probably started hating the Canon LOL. That Canon image can not only match the Komodo but beats it in price. 6k delivery for the client is a thing though so, continue getting paid.
c70 is great, but man am I happy with the kx. can't go wrong either way, but I'm loving the workflow with the kx over the c70
@@thomas.kovacikCompletely. Do your thing. I can't stand having to buy stuff to rig stuff, almost doubling the cost of the camera for things that the Canon has built in. The box cameras like Z Cam are even great but it's too much rigging. Great video, great footage, great review. In the end the only thing that matters are the results and you do great work.
@@kamhunt500 thanks! yeah I totally get it
The c70 stripped down is such a powerhouse it's crazy! The last year I pretty much ran it fully rigged and comparing that setup vs the KX is night and day haha. I'm pretty much cable less now, but is that worth an extra $10-15k? that's up to the cinematographer haha
Can't go wrong nowadays!
4k still overkill in 2024 to my point of view
Depends on your jobs! 4k is still viable for lots of my work- 6k gives me more flexibility with cropping + stabilization too
@@thomas.kovacik totally agree on that. Great vídeo!!
Sony Handycam was the correct answer.
Shoot you’re right
Got a KX for sale! Lightly used
so pretty much you upgraded because you had the money to afford the komodo x lol
I wouldn’t be able to make the move if I didn’t have funds of course, but there’s already been value in adding the KX. Fits my workflow really well
C70 is still great but I’m happy with my move
the Canon cripple hammer strikes again
Haha, love the c70 but my needs have changed! Nothing against that camera
I hope they release some new RF cinema cameras though
C70 obituary
Riiip :(
Still hope to use it again some day!
So many confused people in the world, that enjoy buying new gear. This youtube is chucked full of YT ers, talking about why they sold this and bought that. Few can run a cam 8 years, they just can't do it, lol It's called "Money itching your pocket"... We all have it, LOL
So you are a nikon boy now😅
🫨🫨🫨🫨
Haha technically I guess
I don’t have plans on moving things to the z mount though! Quite happy with my fx3 and KX
@@thomas.kovacik :) i want to try the Sony fx6
Yeah! It’s a solid one
