- Running around on the field? Hanging with the players? Playing shortstop? Taking BP with Kelsie Whitmore, the first female player in an MLB-affiliated league? Turkey eating contest on top of the dugout roof? YES TO ALL OF THIS and there were some former Major Leaguers in the house as well!
The Staten Island FerryHawks are managed by a former New York Mets legend named Edgardo Alfonzo (who once went 6-for-6 in a game!), and the visiting Long Island Ducks are managed by another former Mets stud named Wally Backman (who won a World Series in 1986). Pay close attention and you'll notice some other baseball royalty throughout the video.
Of course it was also great to hang with my friend Alex Katz (@kittyelgato12) and play catch with him. Want to see the other videos that Alex and I have done together? Check these out:

Want to read my book “The Baseball”? (Even if you hate reading, there are lots of pictures, and all the sections are short, so I still recommend it.) Here it is on Amazon:
www.amazon.com/Baseball-Scand...
If you want to buy an autographed copy of the book, contact my family's book store called The Argosy (argosybooks.com) and I will sign it before it gets mailed out. And by the way, if you're in or near NYC, you should visit The Argosy because it's a magical place. It's like the Fenway Park of book stores (minus the obstructed views).
Want to hear my entire in-game interview with FerryHawks broadcaster Jonny Wincott? Here's audio from the whole game -- my portion begins at 1 hour, 45 minutes, and 42 seconds:

Here's what you need to know about the giveaways. There are two different prizes that you have a chance to win. The first one is a copy of my book “The Baseball” AND a Drake baseball -- yes, two items will be bundled together as one prize. The other prize is a commemorative baseball from the 2019 New York-Penn League All-Star Game which, it just so happens, took place on Staten Island. That ball is autographed on the sweet spot by former Major Leaguer Edgardo Alfonzo.
In order to have a chance to win, you need to do ALL of the following:
1) Follow me (@zack_hample) and follow the FerryHawks (@ferryhawks) on Instagram.
2) Like my post on Instagram where I show the giveaway items.
3) Leave a comment in which you tag two people that you personally know.
The FerryHawks will pick the winners on July 21, 2022 and announce it on their Instagram, both on their story and in a static post, so keep an eye on that. Please be advised that there have been scammers messing with my giveaways, so if you don't hear from the FerryHawks' verified Instagram account (or, as a general rule, from MY verified accounts), it's a scam.
The prizes will be selected "draft style." The 1st winner will get their choice of which prize they want and the 2nd winner will receive the prize that remains. If you win, I'll happily autograph any of these items for you (I recommend getting the book signed). Just let the FerryHawks know and they will pass along the info, and if you want anything personalized, please be specific.
Phew! Are you still with me? Good. Almost done . . .
This video was filmed by "Fenway Chris" (@yonnernyc) on July 5, 2022. I edited the first half of it, and Zac Gutherman (@zg_films) edited the second half. Team effort! Thanks for watching and one big final thanks to the FerryHawks for the warm welcome and incredible access. Much love to everyone who helped make this day/video special! - Sport
Wow, I love when the players say they are a fan of you and your videos Zack! Means you are doing the right thing, keep it up!
Thank you! I love it too.
@@zackhample hi
This is one of the best channels on I’ve seen on CZcams. I always get blown away when you get to be on the field with the players. Great video Zach
Thanks so much!
One of your best videos ever. I for one would like to see more independent league videos like this from you. Take care.
I like the different videos its nice to see other teams/leagues associated with the game we love. Keep it up!
I do miss Staten Island even though most don't want to count it as one of the 5 boroughs it still to me is a great city with some amazing pizza. I have lost track how many times I rode the SI Ferry, my grandma used to take me out when I was a kid. Thank You Zack for the great memories, and I hope they had some Bud Light for Fenway Chris.
Aww, you are very welcome! Thanks as always for watching, RJ.
It's one of the 5 boroughs.
Zack Hample just living the dream of every 40 year old man 😂 Great video
I want that ball please my name is Trenton Shaw
You are the best MLB vlogger! Your content is always fun to watch! Hope you are having a good day!
Great video! I like Edgardo Alfonzo back in his MLB days. His swing was very similar to Edgar Martinez.
keep up the amazing work zack great content creator and inspires a lot of people
Awesome video! Great hitting and catching. Look like a pro
Its amazing how cool this organization, amazing how cool everybody was especially the person responsible to make this happen
Great video! Loved this for a change
Great experience and different view. Thanks for the trip to Staten Island.
You’re welcome!
You got a great swing brother! Another great show!!
Great video from Staten Island, Zack, with you interacting with Edgardo Alfonzo and Kelsie Whitmore. Thanks for explaining about the Drake baseballs.
I love your behind the scenes and access videos like this- and I have always wanted to ride the ferry in NYC and see views of NYC- as I have had an interest in NYC for years since I was a kid going through it in 1983- but did not stop due to weather- I love seeing you have fun on the field and I have always found it fun to see the different variations of baseballs that leagues use and I had never seen a Drake ball before! Very cool to learn stuff
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed this.
Keep up the good work Zack ❤️
Zack I really enjoyed watching this video. Your conversation with former Mets Edgardo Alfonso was entertaining. Hitting a baseball is probably the hardest thing to do. You have a very good swing. The Staten Island FerryHawks have a very beautiful stadium. I'm glad they are using that stadium after the Staten Island Yankees left.
I was waiting for this video!! Staten Italy. Thanks Zack!
Staten Italy?! I like it.
Great to see how it all begins at the Minor League level. No egos, just the love of the game.
Always love hearing about or seeing Expos related stuff ❤️⚾!
That infield turf is so neat too.
As always solid video!
Thanks!
This was so fun to watch awesome Zack!!!!
A nice refreshing change of scenery from the perpetual buzz of major league stadiums. From hitting to fielding, you looked good out there!
Thank you!!
Great to see Edgardo Alfonzo......................I´m a BIG FAN..................
Great video like always. I live across from the stadium and it's about time people realize that this team and stadium exist.
Such a fun video Zack!!!
Zack I really appreciate you.🙏❤️ You inspire and I think it’s so nice how you give away your baseball. Road to 1 mil?
Great video as always, Zack. As good (or better) than your Major League entries. Kelsie is a hero to so many girls and young women!
I love how passionate you are about baseball it's so infectious
EPIC VIDEO!!!! Props to you for how long this must have taken to edit (even though you just edited half of it.) Great work as always.
Thank you! Zac was a huge help -- good to split up the work between the two of us (though I'm sure he would've been happy to do the whole thing).
Zack I love your vids!!! Keep it up because your videos are so entertaining
Thanks so much!
I often film for my high school baseball team(team building practices and such) and at 15:58 I about died laughing because I got flamed for getting a shot like that because I was completely lying on the ground, Fenway Chris put in some work for that shot and from camera man to camera man I wanna say good work!
I had no idea of the Ferry Hawks existed. I live in New York! I was impressed by your sweet swing Zack.
Did you know that baseball originated/started in Great Britain!
Thanks so much! Glad you learned something and I appreciate the compliment.
They used to be the SI Yankees. Then briefly the SI Pizza Rats.
This video just made day
Love the video! LOL some of the announcers comments and with the turkey leg contest reminded me of the move Semi Pro with Will Ferrel. Good stuff
Thanks! That turkey thing was fun!
Great coverage Zack! I went last night and witnessed pretty much every kid (and adult) that wanted a Drake foul ball was able to get one at some point with a little hustle through the bleachers. Such a clean, friendly, and scenic ballpark just steps from the ferry.
Love this video… nice break from your hectic schedule to relax and enjoy the game I would assume.
Thanks and yeah, but if I'm filming, there's no pure "enjoyment." I have to be hyper-aware of every single moment and always planning the next thing I'm going to talk about.
What a great video Zack! That stadium is so cool... if I lived in New York, I would so love to go there to catch a ball game - nice stadium, great skyline view, Statue of Liberty, how could you go wrong? And that Ferry Hawks shirt is way cool too (fun logo). Thanks Zack.
Thanks! It was all amazing.
Another banger my brother
👏
God bless
Keep the great content coming
Thanks!
Great stuff Zack keep it coming thank you for sharing God Bless
:)
That stadium is really nice I used to go there alot when they were the Staten Island Yankees in the New York Penn league. I saw Pat Venditte the first ambidextrous pitcher pitch there with my dad back in 2008. I really like your videos you do a awesome job. Keep up the good work.
Wow! What a setting ! Who wouldn't want 2 play there!!!???
This looks like an awesome experience. I hope some more people check out their games because of this
What a cool organization everyone seems so nice and cool to be around and it’s awesome to see the young lady playing ball looks like she has a arm rooting for her and the team this year have a good day
Thanks. The young lady actually has two arms. :p
@@zackhample so she can pitch that fast from left and right now I have to say that’s talent lmbo messing with ya
@@zackhample I have to say that has to be one of the best views from a stadium I’ve ever seen I could be wrong But wow that’s a prime spot very nice stadium
The view of lower Manhattan from that ball park is tremendous, wow! That'd be worth going to see some games alone!
Loving the videos Zack!!! 👍 ⚾️
Thanks for watching.
Love how FWC is being used more on screen and the vlog! The best duo in Major League Baseball Zack hample and FWC!
Best duo EVER!!!!
I went to a York Revolution game last night and got to see Kelsie pitch for the FerryHawks. Super cool.
That has to be one of the BEST outfield views in MLB! Our Aberdeen Iron Birds park looks pretty much the same except our outfield looks over I-95.
Mad respect for showing your own skills out there!
Thanks! :D
LOVE THE TIME YOU GIVE US 😎THANKS
Wow nice video and keep up the fantastic work good sir. You even went on the ferry to get to this ballpark? That is a rather unique thing ever if you ask me.
I used to take the ferry to go to the Staten Island Yankee games all the time with my dad when I was a kid. So many great memories at the ball park
Gotta be emotional seeing freedom tower, awesome views plus cargo ship boating by awesome vid
It’s great that you did a video at this ballpark. I was outside of it May 1st when I did the 5 boro NYC bike tour - the 40 mile ride ended near this stadium. Ever since I saw it I’ve been wanting to see a game there.
Wow! That's an intense tour.
Hi Zack!! Love the videos, keep it up!
Thanks, Preston!
Hey Zack! I have been there on the boat too! When I was in Maryland I saw the Maryland Blue Crabs Play Against The FerryHawks! Great Content Keep it up! (In Maryland) my brother made it to Regionals
Fenway bringing some amazing cam work today. Nice work crew!
:)
Thanks!
Nice vid as always keep catching homers
Truly enjoyed this video .
Glad to hear that.
Hey zack just commenting to say I love the vids keep up the great work
Thanks!
Yea that announcer is living a dream , bless that man - and good luck to the FerryHawks ! A great vibe to the stadium and staff !
Zack, you have a great swing and your defense is solid. Way to go dude!
Thank you!!
Great to see Edgardo Alfonso from Venezuela here in your video!
1st. We love Zack with a K 😂
You blessed us with 4 seconds at 1:09
I actually got to see Kelsie play in her first game in the ALPB (@ the Charleston Dirty Birds) , met her dad and had a great chat about her love of the game. Even have her signature on the ticket of that game. It's awesome to see!
Oh my goodness sick edit
Good stuff MrHample🌝
love the vids zack!!!!
Thanks!
Crazy how open the access is. Really cool view of a team.
That’s Awesome
Cool video Zack, really enjoyed that one. You should definitely visit more minor league grounds. Have actually visited Staten Island many years ago while in New York but don't recall there being a ground there.
Thanks, Alan. Glad you made it there.
You make me happy in thought time so all I can say is thanks you
I went to a Ferry Hawk a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. It was a fun experience. The only problem was it was a very small crowd. I hope they can increase attendance. It's a great venue. On a side note you should go to a Brooklyn Cyclone game.
I hope so too.
Interesting change of pace video. I was at that ballpark a looooong time ago - back in 2001, the Staten Island Yankees' first season. Don't remember too much about it, though. I do recall one interesting feature - from behind home plate, at least, once you walk through the turnstiles from the street, you're immmediately in the seating area, you don't have to go up escalators or elevators or anything like that to get to the concourse. I'd like to have gone to more games there - I guess I still could - but from where I live, it's a very long trip to Staten Island.
Thanks! And I hear ya about the long trek.
Got to see Staten Island here in Charleston WV at the beginning of the season. I also have one of those Drake baseballs.
Really good video, I take it that this is a training league for umpires looking to progress to the majors, cheers as always from New Zealand.
Thanks and it's not just for umpires. Everyone is trying to make it and/or just stay connected to pro ball.
That is probably one of the coolest parks and I don't think anyone could have a better location with that view
Great work
Thanks!
Funny thing is i saw the FerryHawks play yesterday afternoon against our hometown York Revolution. Great game, came down to the bottom of the ninth with one out and the Revolution hit a blooper over the second baseman to win it 6-5.. Great video my man..
Aww man. I don't want to hear about the FerryHawks losing! But thanks -- glad you enjoyed this.
@@zackhample yea man its crazy..
@@zackhample I did get one of the game balls too for my son, took my 10 y/o to the game. After pesting the ball boy all game, he hooked us up after the game. We were both wondering what Drake stood for.. Thanks for the info..
Great music in the background definitely makes this more watchable glad you didn’t edit out the music! Also great video like always!
CZcams didn't flag it so I left it.
Glad you were able to grab a FOWL ball at the Wild Turkeys game.
LOLOLOL
Hi zack, This is awesome!!! I loved this! I think that you should come to like a minor league game or Atlantic league game each season!!!! Anyone agree with me???
I agree. I try to do at least one or two MiLB games every year.
I'd recommend coming out to see the Kansas City Monarchs of the American Association. They play on the Kansas side of town at Legends Field. Also if you haven't already you should visit the Negro Leagues Museum in downtown Kansas City. Wonderful history there.
Love it, I’m from Staten Island and take the ferry all the time.
👊
Cant wait for the home run derby tonight
Favorite baseball memory
I love that ballpark
wow this is crazy Zack! I'm a Lancaster Barnstormers fan which is also in the Atlantic league and it would be awesome if you would stop by soon to watch them play. great video tho.
Thanks! Hopefully I'll make it there someday.
What a neat field and location
Very cool MINI interview after 10:40
Hi Zack good video! I have watched for years now
Thanks!
You need to get to a Frontier League game next! New York Boulders and the Tri City ValleyCats are in your area
Alex Katz team Israel 2021 Tokyo !! Legend
Another minor league ballpark video?! I’m hyped
Awww yeah!
I walked along the sidewalk that goes right behind the outfield walls about a year ago and I peaked through the fence and that stadium was in horrible condition it’s nice to see the got it looking good again
Zack is loving the life we all want to live. I envy his life
Bagel looks delicious 😋
I watch you every day Zack
It's always nice seeing something that's not a packed MLB stadium once in a while. Plus the extra access is awesome.
Yep!
