Stearns did not do the Ruiz/Contreras deal, that was Matt Arnold. Craziest part is since Matt Arnold took over a year ago he has been just as effective as Stearns was
A note about Peralta that you kinda missed: he's signed thru 2024 with two $8 million team options for 2025 and 2026, which based on his current track record will most assuredly be exercised.
And a note about the Hader trade. It wasn't a team sell off per se. Hader's price was only going up in arbitration and the Brewers have never been a team comfortable with giving a reliever, even a closer, $11-$12+ million a season. He was going to be traded that offseason regardless, it was a forgone conclusion. Their logic was trade him now when you can reap more value from the year and a half of control as opposed to only a year and use the pieces you get for him to improve the team in preparation for the postseason. It wasn't a sell off as much as it was a situation where they chose to pull the trigger on Hader sooner than later.
I feel thats a bit like selling though. Not willing to pay a player what hes worth does make it feel similar to a dump.
Well, that and I think the Brewers front office was getting ‘nam flashbacks of when they gave Eric Gagne $10 million a year to be their closer and ended up being such hot garbage that when the Brewers re-signed him, I think it was a 1 year, $1 million deal (if my memory serves me correctly).
Judging at what we’re seeing now, I think the Brewers felt comfortable with the trade because they knew Devin Williams had closer talent. Of course, you could argue that the Brewers had the best setup-to-closer situation in MLB with Williams going to Hader, but everyone knew Williams had closer talent.
David Stearns really is a genius GM and probably does more with less than anyone in baseball aside from the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s going to be an interesting contrast in New York for him because now he’s almost going to have an unlimited budget to work with.
Yeah and they also picked up Matt Bush at that deadline, and as of August 1, Rogers and Bush had been pretty solid while Hader was coming off a horrific month (and would proceed to have an ERA north of 19.00 ??? in August). The idea that Williams' promotion, Rogers, and Bush could cover what Hader was doing was not ridiculous. The problem is that Bush *and* Rogers both regressed massively, combining for -1.9 WPA in 2 months and near-singlehandedly playing the Brewers out of a playoff spot.
@@Dreamhouse126 that's the part I failed to mention, Hader was having major issues at the time. You really can't blame them for getting what they could for him at the time knowing what they did. Hell, there were whispers before arbitration that the Padres might not even tender him, dude was a dumpster fire in the last half of the season (10.18 ERA, 23 ER, 5 homers and 11 walks in the last 25 games of the 2022 season) and he was projected to get over $13 million in arbitration? For a guy whose career might be spiraling? You really can't blame them.
It's an improper move with a player that did so much and was such a big part of that team. And it showed as they never recovered from that shock in the post season.
As a Phillies fan, it´s pretty scary what this guy could do with some more money at his disposal. Built some pretty damn good teams in Milwaukee and that trade history you went through speaks for itself.
im excited to see what he is going to do and hopefully he can use the resources he has now to the best

As a Royals fan I love the Brewers trade history since it was a major piece of them winning a World Series in 2015.

Stearns has not been a member of the brewers FO this year, and he did not make the trade for Contrares. That was Matt Arnold. FYI. it seems like in a few of your videos/shorts, both on this channel and Jomboy Media, you have been under the impression that Stearns has been the President of Baseball Operations for the Brewers this year, when that is not the case. While still under contract, he stepped down last offseason.
If you're the Mets, be excited. This guy can help this franchise so much. They badly need a guy like this, especially with the Mets rather dubious history with trades.
We traded for Rowdy in 2021. About a month after the Adames trade. We also got Trevor Richards in that trade and we used him for Rowdy
As a Cardinals fan I have major respect for Stearns, he’s done a great job for them with the resources he has available.

It's probably worth noting that Stearns didn't make the Murphy/Contreras/Ruiz trade - that's his successor, Matt Arnold (Stearns stepped down after 2022, becoming an advisor/took a sabbatical until he was free to take the Mets job).

Easily my least favorite Brewers star. He swung at almost everything, made boneheaded mistakes on the base paths, had an overinflated view of himself as a player, and was an insane hothead. I’ll never forget when he tried to break a bat over his leg five times after a strikeout. Man was I happy when they traded him.
Hey, Brewers fan here, I love the video but I can’t help to point out there were a lot of things said that were incorrect, or you just misspoke. Like for example, you said we traded for Tellez during 2022, but he was actually acquired near the 2021 deadline. In the Adames trade we also got P Trevor Richards, who we then flopped to Toronto for Rowdy. There’s a lot of little mistakes I also noticed, but like i said most of them seemed like little goof ups. Love the video and looking forward to future vids!
Thank you for pointing this out!!!! Not to mention, Jolly Olive seems to think Stearns has been with the team this year, which is incorrect as he stepped down for this season.
Also he said Grisham filled in for an injured Cain but he actually was in for injured Yelich.

You should do an “Insane trade history of cleveland Indians/Guardians”. They’ve got, by far, the highest positive WAR in trades since the start of free agency. They’re so good at trades it is insane.
Hey bro, stumbled across this in my recommended and couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Needed some hype before the Crew makes their big playoff run and this provided. Never thought I’d see this high quality of a video on the Brewers, but I am glad I found this!
Also to note that Jonathan Schoop trade did not pan out well either, I think they were in the hunt for Machado but ultimately went to the Dodgers. So they settled for Schoop
I think the Brewers also wanted Whit Merrifield from the Royals but KC wasn’t willing to part with him unless they got a king’s ransom of youngsters in return, so they settled for Moustakas. Schoop had one big grand slam but was a complete bust. Moustakas was a beast for the Brewers but I think the one downside to getting him was that it severely messed up Shaw’s confidence. He was playing so well at 3B only for the Brewers to trade for another guy at his position and force him to play 2B, a position he never played in his life. They tried to correct that by switching him and Moustakas to start 2019 but Moose was bad at 2B as well and Shaw completely lost it at the plate.

That Lyles stretch when the Brewers truly caught lightning in a bottle is really insane. Watching that every 5 days, I simply can't believe that he's not been the same guy anywhere else in his career.
Yea it was crazy how Lyles just somehow turned into an ace in such high pressure games despite being mediocre at best for most of his career. He actually pitched fairly well out of the bullpen in 2018 for the Brewers as well when they picked him up at the deadline that year. Kinda crazy how he pitched two months in two straight years with the Brewers.
Lyles was like a baseball version of Matt Flynn with the Packers. Flynn could barely make a roster on other teams but was a very reliable backup QB for Rodgers in Green Bay.
Mediocre at best? Jordan Lyles is legitimately one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball history. Which makes his run with the brewers all the more impressive.

I'm a long time Brewers fan, and there is no doubt Stearns made some amazing trades for us. BUT you have to also remember his awful moves, such as: waiving Scooter Gennett right before he became an all-star, giving away Keon Broxton right before he became an elite slugger, giving away Ji Man Choi right before he became a regular ++ slugger, and dumping a decent Jonathan Villar for an awful Jonathan Schoop.
Love these videos. I am not a baseball guy at all but I find it interesting how a team is built through trades and free agency as a big football fan I have learned that prospects are like draft picks in the NFL. Love the channel learned a lot about the game from you.
If only the MLB could figure out that they need to hype the prospects and not their own draft.
It’s massively depressing that all of these “Insane Trade History” videos are for teams that have never won it all…
It's the world of small markets. Larger markets can just buy the FA's to plug and play. If it doesn't work they rinse and repeat. Teams like Milwaukee have to hit on the majority of what they do and hope that a bunch of young guys acquired from trades get it down. It's tough to win it all when your playing with half the salary to spend (sometimes less) than the heavy market teams. For me, it's more depressing that teams like, say the Padres, who have massive spend and can't even win it all (and this year literally can't get into the playoffs).

@@dariusgarlandszn They haven't made a big signing since Yelich/Cain. Small ones since MA took over for Stearns. Boxberger who was decent, Donaldson who has worked, but outside of that it's been truly minor reclaim projects that are projected reclaim value. Luke Voit and BA didn't work out. Wade Miley most certainly did though. Win some/lose some. They continue to have one of the best scouting departments out there. Furthermore, their ability to get the most out of out of option/waived/low valued trade relievers year in and year out is tremendous. Pegeuro, Payamps, Milner, Megill, Wilson are 5 in the pen that fit the bill this year.

@@dariusgarlandszn Winker 'wasn't' in the sense that we got out from underneath Wong for a risk. That trade was worthless both ways. Yelich definitely will be an eye sore for years to come.

Cardinals fan here and the Brewers make some of the best trades! I know the Cardinals have made some steal of a trades for example Arenado and Goldschmidt but they have made some bad trades too Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantra for Ozuna especially after watching this years pitching woes. I have more respect for teams like the Brewers because they got good through trades and development instead of tanking and top draft picks!

I kinda feel like the Brewers are the new Expos now that they’ve settled into the NL. They operate similarly to how I remember the Expos used to. Never a big market team, don’t spend much but still somehow still manage to be scrappy as hell and scratch out wins. Ya gotta respect that.
I don't respect owners crying poor. Every team like Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati can spend more money than they do
At 9:15, something I would mention about the Moustakas trade is that he re-signed with the Brewers for the 2019 season. When they traded for him in 2018 he was a free agent after the season, so I'm not sure including his 2019 WAR is really fair when evaluating that trade.

11:23 it’s funny you say that cuz every single team that has knocked the brewers out of the playoffs have gone on to at least make the WS. The ‘81 Yankees and the ‘18 dodgers made it to the WS, and the ‘82 cardinals, ‘08 Phillies, ‘11 cardinals, 19’ Nats, ‘20 dodgers, and ‘21 braves winning it all.

He really just benefited from a group of talented prospects who all developed into major leaguers pretty much at the same time. And even then, he wasted two years of that talented group’s time in Milwaukee by hiring boring, washed up control freak Ken Macha to be their manager.

I think his trade deadline trades this year are going to give him a World Series before he leaves Milwaukee . Canha and Santana are driving this team into contention. In fact the moves this guy makes to get his team in positions to win is scary good and the Brewers are going to miss him and Counsel when they both end up in NY. That is then .. This is now and the Brewers ignored roster is ABOUT TO SHOCK THE WORLD!
I would like to mention David Stearns stepped down in the 2022 off-season and Matt Arnold took over for the Crew. He was the one that made both the Canha and Santana trades as well as the Contreras trade that was mentioned in this video

two notes: Mat Arnold made the most recent trade for Contreras. And you also forgot the Rowdy Tellez deal in that same season. He was amazing for us until this last year. nailed it aside from that. would have loved a Mark Canha shout out as well. He's been awesome.
This video is a great reminder to all, not to freak out over any trade that involves prospects! Don't get too excited about who you got, or upset about who you gave up. Everyone was mad about sending Matt LaPorta to Cleveland for CC, and couldn't care less about Michael Brantley being thrown in on the deal. But which one actually turned into a great big leaguer? It's impossible to project prospects accurately. That's why the deals Stearns made for 4 mid to low-grade prospects turned out better than if he had gotten 1 highly-ranked prospect. The odds of 1 or 2 of the other prospects panning out is probably just as good, if not better, than the top prospect reaching his expectations.

A crazy fact about the Brewers that you were close to fully getting. During their entire history every year they made the playoffs the team that beat them made the World Series. And only twice the team didn't win, that 2018 Dodgers and the 1981 Yankees. Even if you wanna get nit picky, the team that got the last wild card last year, ahead of the Brewers by one game, was the Phillies that made the World Series

Also a thing to note with mostakis is that he was a free agent after his trade year and sterns brought him back on a one year deal. That season was probably his last year of his prime and sterns decided to let him walk even though there weren’t any major signs of him slowing down. Ever since he went to Cincy he hasn’t been the same. Crazy foresight
Stearns seemed to have the same foresight with Grandal too. He had arguably the best season of his career in his one year with the Brewers, yet Stearns let him walk on a huge deal with the White Sox. Look what’s happened to him since.

The issue is that in Milwaukee he didn't have the Mets Factor™ to overcome, where players traded for mysteriously have the worst seasons of their career or get injured repeatedly.
Worth noting that the Willy Adames trade's value for the Rays has gone down a ton given the Wander Franco situation. We traded Adames because we had a franchise shortstop in the system, and then.... yeah
as a cards fan, I think that despite our dominance in the nl central recently (not this year lmao) the Brewers are so much better at acquiring talent and getting whatever they can out of middling guys.
if we want to get back to the top, we have to focus on how we manage our team/players like them in order to maximize our roster
ALSO - the Brewers got eliminated in 2011 by the Cardinals, who went on to win it all. And in 2008 the Phillies, who went on to win it all. In 1982, when the Brewers were in the AL, it was the Cardinals, again. In some form, it's almost always been the Cardinals standing in the way.

The royals thank them all the time back in the Zack Grenkie trade they got Alcedies Escobar and Lorenzo Cain from the brewers who both had a HUGE impact on the royals winning their World Series

While Hader definitely bounced back in 2023, he had a 7.31 era in 19 games for the Padres in 2022. The move negativity affected the Brewers clubhouse but it’s hard to argue they would’ve been better off down the stretch if they kept him.

Stearns stepped down from the position of President of Baseball Ops before the end of the 2022 season. He has not been the man making the transactions for a year now. He did not make the Contreras trade, that was Matt Arnold, his understudy. Stearns was only in an advisory role after 2022 season. The Brewers wont have to adjust to his absence because hes been gone for a year now.
Been a brewers fan my whole life because of my uncle and cousin. Never seen the consistent competitiveness until the last 6 years. I just want to win for once in my life and hope they never leave Milwaukee

YES! feels like there is never brewers content on baseball youtube. the history of the team is great, has had great players, the 82' season itself deserves a rewind, won 12 in a row and then preceded to lose 12 in a row, a team with unreal players only losing the world series because fingers got hurt (just a little video idea for ya)

Brewers have an interesting history of losing in the postseason to teams that inevitably go on to the World Series. Hopefully this year is different, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.
