Tradition and Precision: "Le Capuchadou" by Fontenille Pataud (Collection Highlight!)

  • A must-see highlight of my knife collection!
The Thiers-based cutlery company Fontenille Pataud exists since the 1920s and has been known for quality cutlery throughout Europe, but when Gilles Steinberg bought the company in 1994 he gave it a completely new direction.
Mastermind and master craftsman Gilles Steinberg decided to return to the artisan methods of knife making. Today the company is known for its high-quality Laguiole knives. However, the craftsman and craftswomen at Fontenille Pataud do not only respect the tradition and the craft, they also introduced many innovations. For example, they offer Laguiole knives with a locking blade. Gilles Steinberg also came up with a very modern interpretation of the "Le Thiers" knife.
Visit the Fontenille Pataud website and CZcams channel:
    www.fontenille-...
    / laguiolethiers
Fontenille Pataud set up an extra website for "Le Capuchadou":
    www.capuchadou.fr
Watch how the Capuchadou is made:
    • Video (long version)
    • Video (short version)

I can see why you left this beauty till now. All the French knives you've shown are wonderful, but this really takes it to another level. The more I watched the more captivated I became. And to top it off the leather sheath appears to be designed to suit we left handed folk! I see from their website that they will ship to Australia, but oh my the price. Perhaps I might treat myself to one someday, maybe to celebrate something special. Thanks for the video Stefan

My God, herr Schmalhaus, you really do spin a beautiful yarn. The fact that this knife made you feel something very deep and special really shone through the video. Beyond a doubt your best work yet, the care in making that knife is surely matched by the care shown when making this video (and what a grand choice in music!). Bravo, my friend, bravo!

    Nice knife!!
I just sent one of my designs to Willem O'Kelly (K'roo knives)
It's my first custom and I'm very excited :D
Green dyed giraffe bone handles, 3cm long 2.5mm thick nickel silver bolsters (both pinned to the liner as a secondary attachment point aside from the pivot), 1.5mm thick brass liners, stainless backspring and bail and a 3mm thick O1 tool steel blade.
It is a small (9cm closed) slipjoint, but I designed it to perform way above it's size.
I call it the Baby Bear Barlow, small yet strong and it is a barlow pattern.

  • @StefanSchmalhaus
    @StefanSchmalhaus  Před 12 lety +3

@AussieMark909 Yes, it's hard to top this knife unless you want to go really crazy with exotic and precious materials. As for the price, it's still a lot less expensive than a Sebenza. With a Sebenza you get a masterpiece of precision, but the Capuchadou is a knife with a heart and a soul.
