I love how Stephen's just constantly cracking up in this. It is almost like a fan talking with his favourite comedian. You can tell he really, REALLY enjoys Hugh's company.
As always, laughter is everything. Making Fry laugh isn't an easy feat, yet every three words, Laurie has him in tears. That's foundation for a life-long friendship.
Why should this be proof of a great friendship? Becuse they giggle together or because they both giggle about the same word(which is having a sexual context, incidentally?) I think tis kind of "analysis" ìs too simple .
7:53 the slap, how happy Hugh is with Stephen, his most dearest friend, at ease, comfortable, cracking at every word, butterfly in our stomach this is.
I came for a spot of Fry and Laurie, but the sudden revelation of Tony Slattery was a welcomed surprise; I miss him, he should do more shows but I hope he’s doing better!
That first picture they showed of her, I know that I would have been besotted with her if I had met her. Luckily I never did. My life would have been ruined.
I am quite sure Stephen isnt just making up his story of how he met Hugh, but rather confusing it with a different encounter with him later on (or something). Stil very funny, considering he is known for his splendid memory :)
@@umar6278 Even when he's not doing anything as dramatic as putting on a fake accent, he changes his voice and pitch and mannerisms a lot for different characters.
3:40 That look, that stop/pause.. That's the look of a man remembering good old days with happiness and nostalgia. That second right there say it all, what he thinks about Fry and everything they've been together. Favourite moment from the whole documentary
They are so wonderful. Memory is interesting. I scanned my diaries from 1971 recently and read them (I went to university when these 2 did by the way). Some things I just had remembered differntly and the diary set me straight. Strange.
This happens sometimes, rarely, in life. You get two or more gifted comedians, who meet up, serendipitously, but who seem to have a comedic connection that is hilarious and obvious to the audience, and innate to them alone. This is Fry and Laurie.
He disappeared from TV and I'm sure no doubt lost a lot of support from friends due to his alcohol and cocaine problems, but I'm glad he sorted all that out. He easily have a comeback, I'm sure he's still got the wit for it.
Animations are totally secondary to their amazing voices behind it. This upload is a godsend & I hope it never gets removed. It's brought so much joy to my life finding this! Cheers!
I went from a David Mitchell appearance on QI, to a rant he did on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, to That Mitchell and Webb Look, to A Bit of Fry and Laurie and back to this. How wonderful.
I served in the army, 1978-1990. We had what the Royal Navy called Sod’s Operas. Whatever remote corner of the world we found ourselves in, to maintain morale troops were asked to cobble together acts for the Sod’s Opera. Some of the funniest comedy I have ever seen came from that tradition. I’m just talking about the deepest laughter from the most original sources. A lost tradition of raw genius. Christmas, South Georgia, 1982: Recce Platoon Royal Hampshire Regiment, HMS Hecate’d crew inc. the RM Naval Landing Party. I love the Footlights but I also remember the emergence of the Goons from the armed forces.
Pretty sure I've read somewhere either in Stephen's auto biographies or an annecdote surrounding them that they constantly mix up how they first met as a sort of gag between the two of them. I've just remembered this while listening in the beginning. I wish I could remember where i'd read/heard it. Eitherway it's hilarious to see how it changes each time Stephen talks or writes about it xD
I only discovered That Mitchell and Webb Look recently: boy, am I glad I did. I have a load of Lit. essays to hand in, but they can wait for Sir Digby Chicken Caesar...
"Hang onto your hats! Plenty more chattering and chortling on its way!" It's like she knew my hat was so excited that it was about to fly right off my head.
Just would be a joy to have another series of Jeeves & Wooster series as older men. Picturing Jeeves as a Mr Chips at a boys school and Bertie looking like King Charles at Chatsworth! Married with dogs and kids at boarding and all kind of capers
Clearly the people who have written this show find themselves quite humourous. This is like watching a bad cover band open for superstars and then continually insert their own material between snippets of classic rock.
Yeah I can't help but shake the feeling this production just got bungled by incompetence. It's nice having all this extra footage and some more time with Fry and Laurie but there's just not enough discussion and entirely too much narration and the editors absolutely butchering any kind of flow to it. An all around awkward production
Err God...I really just want to see the two of them hanging out and reminiscing about this stuff themselves rather than having crappy out takes, dodgy animation and some breathless awe inspired narration for what just simply amounts to two blokes babbling on to each other.
7:24 - Sadly Studio 8 at the BBC Television Centre where Fry and Laurie filmed their wonderful show, is no more. Studios 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are all now bull dozed down and have been converted into luxury apartments. Studios 1, 2 and 3 however remain, a little nugget from the television centre which made the wonderful Fry and Laurie shows.
That boatride around 4:15 is the same place Tom Baker played the Doctor at, he was on such a boat too. That can be seen in the story the five doctors.and Shada :)
He got addicted to cocaine back in the nineties. He also spent next to a year in seclusion in a warehouse on the bank of the hames due to bipolar disorder. There is a link on here where Stephen and Tony talk about bipolar disorder and self-medication.
@damkot0205 he said 'good luck stitching that together' to the producers of this documentary - his story and fry's had some major differences (eg he said they 1st met in fry's room n drank tea while fry said they met at laurie's room n they drank coffee n others like the guitar etc)... so he said good luck trying to merge the story together.. something like that :)
I love that Hugh assumes the first thing in Stephen's autobiography is "How I met Hugh Laurie". Like nothing of note happened before that.
I love how fabulously dressed emma thompson is in this.
I can't tell if she is dressed that way as a joke or not but she looks fantastic.
Definitely taking the piss.
@@kindnessfirst9670 irony no doubt.. beautiful woman though
... she was taking the piss. The overly glamorous, pompous starlet haha
She's hamming it up, theatre stylee. But I kept grinning because I've seen her in her Brideshead Revisited role!
The stories of how they met, seems like they planned the confusion and stereotypes haha I love it
Wish they'd just let them speak for 90 mins
You mean you don't like the generic narrator show, ft. the occasional bit of Fry and Laurie?
Amen

Friendships like this really make life worth living.
past 50 and still giggling over the word "penetration"... you can tell these two have been best friends forever!
Why should this be proof of a great friendship? Becuse they giggle together or because they both giggle about the same word(which is having a sexual context, incidentally?)
I think tis kind of "analysis" ìs too simple .
Laughing at dumb things is easier with someone you have rapport with
these two together are like little kids. that's real friendship.
Fry and Laurie should actually teach a class on British History called Britain: Just what the bloody hell went wrong?
This comment has never been more true than it is in 2020
Tony blair. Followed shortly by the extreme minorities and PC.
I think that’s American history 😂💀 (I’m American)
Greed followed by many times a double of helping of Greed

After watching A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and then this, I think Hugh Laurie's voice got deeper as he got older.
you should hear him in Blackadder

Hugh and Fry are simply legends.

Hugh Laurie in most interviews reminds me of his psychic spoon bender character in F&L, this is the only interview in which he looks truly relaxed.
A beautifully prepared conversation pit.
11:19 you can almost see the wheels in Hugh's brain start turning after Stephen mentioned market penetration.
Good God, Emma Thompson is FABULOUS.
Yes, the Almighty would be impressed with Emma's thespian prowess!
