  • For years, Danny Lindahl taught the fundamentals and physics of throwing disc golf discs to the masses. In this five-part series, Danny takes his teaching method to a new level-one that involves other humans. Watch episode one now.
    In this first 1-on-1 coaching session, Danny walks a novice golfer through four key drills disc golfers need to throw slow-because slow is smooth and smooth is far.

    Whenever I'm playing with a new player, I always like to get them started on the first few holes by throwing discs and simply letting them learn how a disc flies, glides, and fades. By hole 4-8 or so is when I like to delve into more mechanical thinking. But as long as the person you're teaching is having fun, then you're doing it right!

    This seems like it could be another incredibly helpful series from DD!
    Here's some armchair psychology for you, Danny -- from someone who has been in roles where I've had to rapidly deliver new information to folks and at times on camera:
    My impression is that most people when put in a situation where they are learning something new (or relatively new), and especially if having to do so while on camera, have two key subconscious motivators going on for them: they do not want to be embarrassed nor a hinderance. So, when overwhelmed with information (info dumping), most people will simply be agreeable when directly asked if they understand or notice something -- typically the learner is not consciously considering their awareness in addition to focusing on absorbing new information, and so delivers a subconscious response driven by those two main motivating factors.
    I think a way as a teacher to work against this natural inclination is to hyper focus on key elements without verbally crossing over to other elements already or to be learned -- let your learner internally relate elements themselves or else do so as the teacher in a separate review section when not learning new elements -- and to not directly ask your learner "yes" or "no" questions but instead guide them to describe back to you what you are hoping they are learning; for instance, with the heavy bottle drill at the end, rather than asking, "do you feel the weight at this point?", asking the learner to describe (and assuring them to take as much time as needed to feel confident) where in the swing they feel the most weight, should get them to consciously focus on what they are doing instead of feeling a subconscious need to move along with what the teacher wants to get done.
    Again, just some armchair psychology from someone who also has immense social anxiety but has been in similar teaching roles; so take from it whatever you think may be helpful and best of luck with your continued growth as a teacher for the sport! I am still relatively new myself and have been learning a lot from your content, so thanks!!

    Anything that helps me to get some muscle memory for consistent throws that travel in the desired direction is helpful.The hammer and heavy bottle drills are a good idea. As a casual player, I've mostly just been using a bottle to get hammered. 🥳

  • @josephcooper8885
    @josephcooper8885 Před rokem +2

    A good thing to do, especially with completely new players, would be to get a feel for how they conceptualize the form and method of throwing a disc. Just say to them, “OK, to start I just want you to go off of intuition and do what feels right to you, no judgement, no wrong answers - I just don’t want to overload you so I just want to see where you’re at and then I can meet you in the middle”, you’ll be able to stay less reliant on terminology and keep yourself distanced from using jargon.
    Then, highlight things they do or tell you that can be worked with, perhaps even direct 1:1 parallels with certain key points in mechanics and instead of saying, “this is called the x-step”, just refer to it using the terminology they used. You’ll be able to build from the ground up on their terms and reinforce them positively instead of working backwards shoveling the knowledge you’ve had for years onto them in a way that can be hard to understand and a bit overwhelming.
    Be assertive and positive and unconcerned with what the student is thinking and just take the things they have, compliment what is good or will work as a foundation for facilitating improvement. Don’t get discouraged and don’t focus any energy on saying, “yeah, it takes awhile to get, but you’ll get it”. I also wouldn’t focus at all on teaching them drills.
    Drills shouldn’t come until you know if the sport is for you or not. Just keep a good flow, keep it fun and most importantly build their confidence but don’t patronize or condescend. If you can get them having fun and feeling good about even the slightest thing the improvement will come naturally with reps

      Also, it may be a good idea to sort of write out a thing and rehearse it, then when you’re taking a shit imagine yourself teaching and say the stuff out loud, practice it recite it repeat it every single time you are on that toilet taking a shit. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. You will feel incredibly stupid, but you’ll often find creative solutions to problems and new ways of interacting with life and in the world that practicing stuff while not shitting simply cannot replicate. Toilet time is where trying meets terrific to become talented and totally tubular, or TTIWTMTTBTATT. Or, number two is where we become number one. Crucial.

    When it comes to gripping the disc, one rule of thumb I remember from classic golf is you grip the club like the hardest you can grip an open tube of toothpaste without squirting the contents out. It applies to disc golf well too.

  • @3X73RM
    @3X73RM Před 2 dny

    I've only played four full rounds so far, so very much a beginner, but the thing that let me be at least a little more consistent is actually by using a walk up instead of standing still. When I stand still I feel more tense and "in my head" overthinking technique queues. When I just walk up and let my body and the disc do their things, it feels more relaxed and natural. Also, I'm WAY better at forehands, like many beginners are, I hear 😅

    Amazing video with some interesting drills. I've been struggling with "the hit" and believe the hammer and bottle drill will help get the feeling down.
    Also, looks like Mariah was releasing the disc and not letting it rip out of her hands, thus the wobble. You see her throwing hand, fingers stretched out after the throw.

    I am totally struggling with disc golf. I had my first lesson a few days ago and I was more confused than when I started. Too much information, he must have given me 8 different techniques. I was so sore (he had me throwing discs for 1:20 hrs), that today was the first day I was able to go to the park and practice.
    I am older too, 65 and weigh 117lbs. I tried the swinging arm technique, and I am still not sure what to do with my feet? It is all overwhelming.
    Mariah is way better than I am. At this point I can only throw the disc about 20 to 30 ft.
    Danny, would you please consider doing a beginner's video with someone like me, a female senior?

      It sucks im right hand dominant and have to throw with mainly arm power because I can’t feel it with my legs and hips but when I disc left handed I can literally feel every point energy is being created and transferred and feeling it snap out lol

    Your first step is correct BUT now you must get the right foot further left if RHBH which will get your disc released straight in front of you instead of to right of you PLUS by getting right foot further over to left of tee pad you get much further distance bcuz your twisting your hips more now bcuz of it!

    Almost always when I try to play with a girl for the first time it's an exercise in frustration. I swear they often just won't try to throw hard. I'm sure they understand what I mean when I demonstrate how to use your entire body, make a whip l, etc. Then they just toss it 25' with a wrist flip again. Sometimes they don't. But omg it happens often and is frustrating.

Paige Shue had a good video for ladies who start playing and she dealt with a few issues women players have that us guys don't think about.
