The thing I always miss in these video's is the end result, you know, put the thing back together an boot it up to show that the repair was succesfull.
probably a failure thats why they dont show it..
@@michaelknight8797 or maybe because yours didnt work and ur salty
or maybe cause its a console used for an example and already works????
think before you spit bullshit
I remember back when I was around 16, I got the red ring of death and did a DIY fix where I tore the case open breaking a few of the clips, then put two pennies wrapped in electrical tape in place of the old thermal pads, then put it back together and it worked like a charm 😃😃haha This method in video looks much more clean and professional, and I'd take this route now as an adult, but it was fun to think back on!
Thank you for using the correct amount of thermal paste. I've seen so many videos where they apply what looks like a quarter of a tube of the stuff.
Nobody ever looked so cute while fixing RROD. :)
Ive been fixing Xbox's for a couple years but i still watched your video :)
Do not use washers for the cpu or gpu. They do fix it but they do it in a way that will destroy the console. They pull the cpu or gpu back into the solder balls but with the amount of heat produced this will flex the board. When it flexes, the cpu or gpu can't move and it will damage the motherboard around there and can kill the board.
Also some gpus and cpus are fully dead and the washers won't work. You will have to get a new one or send it to someone who knows how to replace the cpu or gpu.
yep and the x-clamps are needed to keep the board from flexing around the cpu and gpu. although I could have idea wrong.
i subscribed, just because your the only one who gives some extra and usefull tips like, telling me how to undo those x-clams
USE ISO ALCOHOL. Not nail polish remover. And never spread the paste by hand , put a pea sized dot in the middle and press down the heatsink and it will spread on naturally and it will be the perfect thickness
Alcohol is barely effective on the thermal *putty* used in these old Xboxes. Clorox wipes are more effective than alcohol.
For 30yrs of doing this and OC'n and writing tutorials, using your finger is just fine. Love that the 'scary finger oil is going to make it run hot' is still a funny. Also, a dry paper towel works the best at removing compound.
@@wright96d Clorox wipes have alcohol on them
@@Davidmormino Well whatever is in them that's not alcohol is probably what loosened the paste.
That's a bolt mod isn't it? We get the luxury of retrospect with this since it's a decade old, but if it is I don't think it's the best idea.
Thank you someone else who knows bolt modding your Xbox 369 does NOT fix the red ring of death issue this is a bandaid fix the console will red ring again and as you keep repeating this “fix” the shorter your Xbox will last
@DICEMAN60 Sure, there are lots of different ways to apply thermal compound. All of which are better than how she did it in the video.
Lol!
DO NOT USE SCREWS THE POSTS ARE USED TO ALLOW THE BOARD TO FLEX WITH THE HEAT AND MOVE WITHIN THE CASE
So I have a question.... WHAT NEW THINGS DO I HAVE TO BUY, for this. Do I need to buy new pads and everything? or do I just need to put new gel on it and put it all back together? I never fixed anything before.
I recently picked up an xbox 360 that was refurbished by Gamestop. Fans were loud so I opened the console to clean fans and heatsinks. Also wanted to apply new thermal paste. To my surprise, the fans were loud because they tapped into the dvd drive cable and performed a 12v fan mod which makes the fans always run on high.
Here's my question though... Does the x-clamp fix require the metal washers? This console had machine screws and nylon washers only. Should I add the missing metal washers or leave as-is?
it works, but that wasn't my problem! thank you!
I had fixed 2 xbox's before that had 3 red rings but for some reason the one I am working on now still has 3 red rings! What can I do to get this thing to work??
Idk why but ur comment just made my day just a little bit better :D
What size and what kind of screws did you use on the cpu and gpu thank you.
Nice, thank you. That may come in handy in the future. I'm still rocking the old style xbox..been using it for a few years now. Only thing I've had to do so far (knock on wood), is turn up the laser power a tiny bit when it stopped reading. My new slim stopped reading just out of warranty! Haven't had the will to learn about opening that one up yet : ) Any good sources on that would be much appreciated! Thanks again.
Nice tut MJ but where is the tut for 360 slim disassembly? I can't find that one on your channel.
Another thing i would like to point out is that you shouldnt use plastic around stuff like a gpu/cpu to rub thermal paste .. use a tooth pick + arctic silver 5 thermal paste and just add a VERY thin layer of thermal paste .. that should really keep things cool.
Max Paynez wtf you talking about
Why? Inquiring minds want to know. lol Seriously, why? There is no reason why it wouldn't be a good use application.
Does ifixit have a teardown of the 360 slim? I'm curious to see what changes Microsoft made to fix the rrod problem.
Wait, back up. So applying new thermal paste will fix hardware failure? Not a new CPU or GPU replacement?
Please don't skip a lot of those parts. I'd like to see a full repair without skipping. Besides for that, very nice.
what size are the heat syncs you applied please answer
What are the sizes of the machine screws and washers?
Thanks it really worked
i all ready have this kit but i need 1 more stick on heat sinks what is the name of it or were can i pay it
I have the new model the one that doesint use the buttons that click.I dont know what model it is called but it came out in december of last year can you
I'm going to be repairing my Xbox 360 but I don't have new thermal pads or whatever it is. Can I still fix my Xbox 360 without needing them? By the way I have an Elite (with a HDMI connection).
Seeing the special case spudger like damn i did it all wrong all yhese years!!! Seriously never knew it existed!
what size screws and washers do you use for this
I love your channel, I, as the only person that seems to know what they are doing where I am, like and subscribed to your channel and I will find these useful in the future. I have a suggestion, tell us how much your kits cost in the video. i'm going to look right now for this one, but if you told me I might buy it sooner. I'm thinking about starting a channel of my own any advice to some one just starting?
is it bulit brufe? or is thewre a lot of money on the 2th layer?
You got a Fix for Red Ring of Love?
I have the latest xbox 360 ( the one that looks like the xbox one) and It has a red dot when it shuts off immediately after turning it on, any tips?
when i took my xbox 360 arcade apart it did not have those heat pads on the four on the bottom please tell me why is that?
Also using Surgical Spirit or Rubbing alcohol will work to remove thermal paste. And you don't usually spread thermal paste like that, you put a drop in the centre and use the pressure of the heatsink above to spread it to where it naturally needs to be
R.I.P to that poor Jasper model Xbox 360, those never rrod unless it's just a power supply issue.
@xXDEICIDE216Xx The center pressure is the reason the motherboard in the 360 warps causing the BGA failure. When MS was testing the heat endurance, they concluded that the heat was well below the limits of the GPU/CPU Failure threshold. HOWEVER, they did not consider the constant heating and cooling cycle that is common with consoles (being turned on and off regularly) and the effects that this would have on the motherboard as far as warping over time.
MJ, you rock!!!
i dont have the heat sink pads on the back of mine do i still do everything but that one step
How did this fix rrod without heating it?
The solder will still be messed up.
Can someone tell me what those 4 pad things are called next to the xclamps at 2:18 ?
All you did was replace thermal paste and the pads, what happened to the solder between the CPU and the GPU?
My release xbox still works but has suffered from RROD since a few months after purchase. My xbox is very particular where it is plugged in and prefers to be plugged into a UPS that helps condition the line AC.
I have tested it at several locations between the two homes I've lived in since owning it and friends homes and clean power is the key to keeping my xbox running. Mine has never RROD after use just cold starts plugged right into the wall.
I don't how you handle that but I learned once that you shouldn't touch on a electronic board unless you're grounded. Are you? And please use next time the right sized screw driver. Then one which you're using at around 3.40 is definitely to small.
@bhz10 lol, i just got the rrod on my xbox, thanx for your comment! :P
I know this is a good way to fix it, but how reliable is it? If its revived, should I back it up and buy a new one, or just use it as normal?
whats the thermal pad thickness
Can you Help me i have a x-box 360 slim and when i put a game in it tares it up in about ten minutes!! Would that possibly be the disk drive?? Please reply back!! Thank You!! And Great videos!! It Helps alot!!
@YoAmSoRaW did you rest the xbox?
THANK YOU
the oem thermal pads smell good =]]
@iFixitYourself No you need to reflow the board with a heat gun. This only improves thermal conductivity it does not guarantee that circuits will be complete.
I did this before and I added a way better fan while I was in there, never had an issue again with my xbox overheating.
I am just wondering. If the solder melts, when I will do „reballing“ what is the best solder to use?
Do not reball. It won't help. Because the problem is on the GPU chip itself, you need to replace the GPU entirely. To do it you need no-clean flux, 63/37 or 60/40 0.6mm solder balls, BGA Rework Station, stencil and I'm not sure was there more but if you're actually gonna do it, just tell me so I'll link everything you need.
mine shown like a 1/4 of a rrod so is it still in trouble
Pleas make a video showing how to fix the ps3 triangle button
I'm a frequent gaming PC builder. I've bought both the PS3 and Xbox 360 Slim versions.
I took them both apart as soon as I bought them.
Buy some ''Antec Formula 7'' Thermal paste.
Do NOT apply the Thermal Paste the way she does in the video.
Just apply a small pea size amount in the center of the chips. Then fix the HS (Heatsink) down.
Also, you should 'lap' or polish the HS where they contact the chips. Steel wool works great, just rub the HS in a single direction until you get a mirror finish.
Although his wording left a bit to be desired, he kind of has a point. I mean, it's nice that MJ has all the technical knowledge of how to take it apart and do this and that, but it would be more convincing and possibly real had she turned the Xbox on and showed it's RROD. Then, after repairing it, she could have plugged it back in and showed us the final result -- hopefully that of it being successfully repaired.
@modex20 For the method it is best to use the dot method because of the arragement of the CPU ibm.com/developerworks/power/library/pa-fpfxbox/figure1.gif A credit card is also a good way to spread the compound without creating air bubbles. I have also been advised to use a heat gun to help reflow the board.
Most repairs require a reflow. Strange how she just did a pm on the cooling systems. Also, the resistors to see if they were out of range.
Will this fix work if there's only 1 red led on the red ring of death
i dont see how this will fix the problem. i see how it could help to prevent the problem but not fix it
Wow, really simple. Now fix my PS3; it caught on fire.
@wollesto which mean there are more errors for ps3 than xbox :P
The x clamps are needed lol as this will warp the board without them and that fix is just a band aid only last about 28 days maybe less also not allways solder cracks causing red light death same as ps3 its the capacitors that meed replacing or just piggie back 4x 6volts at 460 micro farad.hope this helps eny ☝
WTF!
2:00 how many screws n type u have to open to get it out completely, i know people will get freaking confused if they saw u suddenly open it just like that without even mentioning them. two type of screws there n u dont even mention it.
@Rcee01 did it work man it worked for me so good like yesterday i played for like 3 hours and it was not even hot if i still had all the dust in it it it will be burning. And also when your vacuuming it with the tube thing make sure to unplug thee wires attached to the xbox and clean in those openings, and also vacum the black box thing with the orange light. Good luck I hope i helped you!
yes it doesnt hurt to reflow the cpu however those little sticker bs things on the bottom that they remove you only have to replace those and your system will work just fine have a nice day knowing you didnt spend a waste of money on way to much thermal paste
what is the point of thermal pads?
Do you know of a more permanent fix by any chance?
Please do a how to fix on that model?
yea my friends brother bought a used 360 arcade and it just rrod so this should help him thanks for the help
Did he fix it?
wait, what do you do with the "x" clamps?
Trash
@@cyclops8238 no you put them back on because the bolts are the worst thing you can do to an Xbox. If you want a reasoning then I will explain if you want.
I'm sure you're not even watching comments on this video anymore (I wouldn't blame you, lol) but I'm just curious, how does this fix the xbox? All you're doing is replacing thermal compound and pads, and clamping the heatsink on better. I don't see how this would instantly fix the system, and if you could explain a little bit I'd appreciate it.
It doesn't fix it because the problem is the GPU itself. The point of this mod was to force the connection between the board and the GPU but actually it makes things even worse.
@@mrveink yup it crush the cpu/gpu against the board. I used to do this and cook the board in a oven back in the days. Now I’v learned and I own 4 jasper v2, goodbye rrod. I still play a lot of 360 games.
@SGLNightHawk what's be better is if they made there own pc and see how it's like an xbox just has more cooling options.
Can you please post a video of how to fix an xbox 360 slim that has gotten a red light. It changes from green to red after about 1 second of being on. It doesn't get an error message and nothing appears on the screen.
How many of the quadrants are lit up red?
@truckstopcowboy i had the fat one for about 6 years and i do long gaming times with friends allot back in the day but now i have a life
I am perty Shure that my Xbox 360 e is due for me to clean it and replace the Thermo compound. I got it in 2013 and used it every day sense.
Where did they find this lass? I have, on multiple occasions, caught myself just watching random fixing videos that are completely unrelated to cellphone repair just to hear her talk.
I always get rrod on my xbox i just do alittle fiddling and faddling with the wires [ moving and repluging them] and it turns right back on :P
It didn't work for me, please help fixit :(
@Nintenfan49 Yes but it will break it heavily. It will only last 1 week lifetime doing the towel trick. Doing these self-repairs can give MS the right to ban the console from Xbox Live. (That's if your on it.) It's in the TOU nothing I can do lol.
You are using ACETONE on the GPU/CPU? .. .facepalm .. use isopropyl on the GPU/CPU .. and ACETONE on the heatsink only (if its really hard to remove thermal paste from the heatsink otherwise use Rubbing alcohol aka isopropyl)
Max Paynez pp
lol, cant believe i am commenting and it is 4 years old.. doing this is alright but WARP and other issues the X-Clamp mod can cause
Well said
Will this premently** fix that problem ?
I dont want to sound like negative-Nancy, but you forgot to heat the chip before you put back the heat sink, it would not work that way, so the chip contact would get back in place, the reason you got the red light is because the heat sing warp the board losing the connections of the chip and the board.
my xbox shows only one red light
what should i do?
yes, you have to do full reballing to BGA
it means replace all this small balls under GPU chip.
This is Jasper model, Red Ring of Death on this model is under 1% so it is not broken.
also this repair kit will work in 10% , and problem will come back in 90% .
this is just a temp fix.
Não sabe inglês mas quer ver o vídeo do iFixit? No meu canal tem o vídeo legendado.
@rustyragster it said they closed their account
but i am still get the red ring of death erro
wht do it now
Mine "CPU" ( Center Processing Unit ) is now working Slowly Slowly...
And the heat gun is not necessary?
send me some tools to fix it please
a woman who actually knows something about xbox.. wow
@legolover7777 - Ashens was not in this video. LOL!
The biggest issue with fixing a console (or any computer, really) is just dealing with the sheer amount of variables involved with troubleshooting. RROD? Which code? When did it first happen? What happened just before the console shut down? what did the code search reveal as a possible suspect? Is it fixable? How involved will the repair be? These and many more questions brought to you by some punk kid in the Rocky Mountains, with an Xbox throwing E10 and E71.
TheHGCGamersClub Personally I use Ifixit is merely a guide to take apart the console and nothing more. I use forums spanning across the entire internet and cross analyzing what information they have, then see if the result is applicable to my situation. I do not endorse the use of a heat gun to reflow delicate electronics, it is a temporary fix used to retrieve data from the console, be it on disc or internally. You may be right about the motives behind these videos, but nonetheless they are still helpful.
TheHGCGamersClub Then don't buy it. I'm not going to either.
TheHGCGamersClub It is a video describing the process to take apart the console. Only at the end is it an advertisement to buy their product. Your pretentious behaviour will sway no one. Instead of having an intellectual member measurement contest on the internet, use your time to apply your unimaginable knowledge to fixing the untold thousands of electronics you clearly presume to know how to fix.
TheHGCGamersClub Torx bit, Phillips bit, and a small prying device. You make it sound like buying a house.
@rcredit unfortunetly you could but it is called yellow light of death. I had my ps3 since it first came out and finally the other day i got yellow light of death. There is also a fix for it. However it will only be ok for a day and then it will be bad again. So If you do not have a warranty then eventually youre ps3 might do the same and you will have to buy a new one :( lets hope it lasts the same amount of years mine did. If you own the slim you have a better chance it wont happen.
