Fix Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death THE RIGHT WAY Teardown & Repaste - Hry
18:30 "make sure you don't use too much thermal paste, too much will actually hinder it" -proceeds to drown it in thermal paste
as5 is also conductive... and its all over lol
Let's start with the GPU. Clearly starts with CPU. Homeboy has dyslexia or is blind not to see the ram around the GPU
@@HandicappedMind Exactly what I was thinking!!!
Exactly what I was thinking!!!
Just watched this video, got to the part where he was talking about taking the top and bottom panels off without breaking the clips but you can see broken plastic all in it
I have done this to multiple xboxs and it worked every time. Great Video
I've done this to 5 xbox 360s and not one came back to life...
Mine got the red ring of death. I did the Q-tip method. I have had this Xbox for like four years and I also got it from a previous owner so it’s pretty old but surprisingly it still works.
I dont even have an xbox but i binge watched this
Goo gone is your friend for dried thermal paste. Then alcohol afterwards to clean off the goo gone
I gave this a go without much hope because my hardware skills are not fantastic - I was genuinely shocked when the xbox started up. Great video and if I can do it anyone can
The Jasper units don't suffer the same RROD as the earlier ones... They have capacitor issues. Also the Kronos Phat 360s don't die whatsoever.
What kind of capacitor issues?
@@kutless45I’m experiencing this now with my Xbox , the jaspers have Sanyo capacitors that are cheap , mine have blown up , not all jaspers just some , the falcons and xenon’s have rubycon capacitors and last
Thank you for taking the time and making this happen on CZcams
Picked up a RROD xbox360 as part of a console lot. After using a heat gun for 5 minutes and new thermal paste it console is working now.
Hi, is it still working?
@@SuperHitman55 It is temporary fix! It will come back!
@@sergelavallee913 Mine works
Great video. You showed and explained every step. 18:12 'a dab'. You've got them flowing over the chips onto the board. lol
😂 someone never watched tonics fix
@@EnahsFurm definitely not the perfect amount of thermal paste
Gonna have to order the paste you spoke of before tackling this essential repair. Thanks.
I got 4 of these. People donated and bought for cheap. Going to try this!
This video is excellent! All the steps are very clear. Thank you for making it. My son and I just fixed our old Xbox-360. It sat in the back of a cabinet for years. When my son got a free TV for his room, we decided to try and fix it. We were so happy this process worked. Thank you again!
I fixed my original phat xbox 360 I clean the motherboard the DVD drive gears tray drive belt heat sinks and the fans most importantly I reapply fresh thermal paste on the CPU and GPU chips and heat sinks also clean the power brick and the fan its how I fixed my original Microsoft Xbox 360 and it works excellent
Worked! Thanks so much!
Definitely liked and subscribed
I have a elite system that has great HDMI port but the video does not show. Sound comes thru though. I get one vertical line of display. I cleaned it and put new thermal paste in it still does not work any suggestions? Will heating the chips like this maybe work?
Bought a Halo 3 xbox with the RROD - going to give this a try. Hopefully all goes well! If anything i'll just move the chassis to another motherboard lol
You didnt remove the sata and fan cable when you were applying the heat, the thermal paste and heatsink appliance was bad and you miscalled them, its the other way around, also in the end you put the fan shroud wrongfully and thats why you could not place the DVD drive properly. I enjoyed the video tho but too many mistakes
it's proved it doesn't matter applying too much thermal paste.
Excellent video very clear. Merci beaucoup.
Took my 360 apart to try and repair the RRoD and found 3 bulged/leaking capacitors. Ordered replacements, but I'm wondering if I should still follow the steps in your video, or test functionality after I replace the capacitors?
I’ve had the same thing happen to me as well. The capacitors should not be an issue if they aren’t burst but if you are going to try the method from the video, I’d just go ahead and replace the capacitors since all that extra heat from the gun could cause then to burst.
I have a digital heat that has actual specific heat temperatures you can set the gun for so do you know what heat setting would it be for low and high in Celsius/Fahrenheit ??
400 Celsius
I did this to my grandma's xbox and it worked great
Your awesome man ty I might need this in the future
i get one for 5$ i fix it like you do sur and he work very well
So does this fix all types of the red rings?
I need help, in 2018 my limited edition halo 4 Xbox has the red ring but idk how to open In. I was wondering if I can mail it to you. I've tried method I've seen on CZcams so I feel like you're my last hope
Get it reballed as not reflowed. The reflow is a bunch of hot air. The reballed is permanent
Lead free solder has a high melting point (~400f). Heating the board is just that. you're more doing that here. Get some flux around the chip and focus heat on a preheated board to at least get molten solder. Other option is a complete reball..
My xbox had red ring for 8 years and i never fixed it
Mine doesnt start up anymore after this. Any chance i missed something?
I have a friend that well he is involved medium to heavily in electronics he was in a game shop too he also did stuff with pcs. He told me that he fixed these on the daily and he did that one fix on CZcams where you take off the x clamps and well essentially hard mount the cpu and gpu I didn't like that but he told me that helps it but the true fix it well desolder and reball either or the cpu or gpu or perhaps both. And well yeah he's right he came to that conclusion years before and he's right it's just that, that's a high skill level you have to be to do that there are mechines that do that for you but possibly are very expensive oh also solder mats for the actual chips you need and a hot air work station to do it. I actually want to do that myself one day to like learn mostly
Can I use a oven instead of the heat gun????
Where in any place of computer how-to's has that EVER been an acceptable frosting of thermal paste?
😂
It’s a fantastic repair but is there a way to prevent it from happening again? Overheating seems to be a huge issue with these older 360s.
Heat kills. Proper airflow repaste and clean the inside. Place the console in a open space not in an entertainment center or on carpet. Check that both fans run and push air out of the back. I also added small heat sinks to the ram chips
The processors are defective, the constant cycle of high temp-back to normal kills parts of the chip which have a design issue. There's a lot of interesting info on it! The only way for you to feel safe with it is playing on Xbox 360 S, or any other Xbox consoles coming after as they are retrocompatible
You should never smear the therm paste as it creates air bubbles, just leave in a blob in the middle and as you put the heat sink back on it will be pushed outnice and even with no air trapped. 😉
it's proved it doesn't matter.
@@tirijalito I've seen it proved that it does matter hence why I mentioned it. Where out of interest did you learn that?

18:21 How to apply thermal paste like the verge
it's proved it doesn't matter.
Had one with diag 0102. Was tearing it down and just realized it has 10 blown capacitors.
That happen to me
On my 360 the cd tray doesn’t open like it should, I have to use my fingers to open it, it closes ok but what can I do to fix this? Thanks
Is old but there’s a band that usually slips in the dvd drive that can be cleaned
No replaced
Everyone watching this video ROCKS!! 🤘🏾
You should make an rgh tutorial
I followed the steps to get hard drive out then placed hard drive on piece of cardboard then wrapped board in aluminum foil. Placed in oven preheated to 350 for 20 minutes, no longer! Lift board out of over by lifting cardboard. Let cool then carefully reassemble, Turn on normally & enjoy
The oven is for food not sensitive electronics. while it may "work " For a short time you cause more problems as all the components don't need heat just the faulty GPU
If you don't have a heat gun can you use a hair dryer or oven?
Mmmm xbox for dinner
Do you know if this xbox was a jasper xenon or falcon??
Sure that it's a falcon. If you see the Southbridge, have the XSB with the circular metal top. The Jasper have new chip PSB with a black desing
@@MrClavesin correct, also has only two power coils = falcon
Falcon
probably 2007 falcon which still has same defective RHEA GPU used in the xenons.
He is duing this on carpet stic electrictity?
Found my "2nd" red ringed Xbox 360 today. Had a red ring, Xbox "fixed" it or sent me a new one that also ended up getting it too lol. That's when I switched to playstation only
what if i dont have a heat gun to heat the motherboard up what can i use besides that.
Use a vape coil 200watt
hair dryer for very temporary fix, only lasts few minutes usually but still its fun.
I don't normally reuse the x clamps. I replace them and use bolts and nylon washers.
that damages the board further
@@zackwolf1173 not if you do it right.
@@arpod1980 true that
@@arpod1980 just had a working bolt modded jasper come in. Undid the bolts, and now gpu is dead E74. Put bolts back, still E74. Bolt Modding kills the gpu and warps board very bad so that new graphics processor cannot be reflown correctly. Board is junk.
Thanks man 😊
Heat gun is not repair temporary fix
you are correct, you need to replace the gpu!
Amen bro
@@bethfoster6208 nope just re ball it
@@pablonaranjo your wrong
yup. reballing wont help. FCBGA fault inside the gpu. GPU must be put in trash it cannot be fixed ever. Need new gpu.
U didn't put the fan shroud on correctly rip that Xbox gonna die of overheating
Edit of further Inspection there was quite a few things that j noticed that were wrong
Can you do the reflow with s hair blower?
hair blower can temporarily fix it. warm it up 40 seconds and test again while board is still hot. should work until it cools down again. tested on a xenon board.
A reflow is never the best way, when it comes to 3RL or E82, Microsoft itself said that the problem is not in the contact between the XGPU and the card, but in the contact between the EDRAM and the EDRAM reballing. Therefore, performing a Reballing on the XGPU with these errors is a repair without warranty, because when removing the XGPU with the heat applied you reflow the EDRAM, and that is why in some cases it is not possible to solve the problem even with reballing. , it is recommended to replace the XGPU in these cases, it is a permanent repair.
I think if i recall the jasper models didn't have this as much
I still use my Jasper
What can i use if i dont have a heat gun
hair dryer, warm board for 40 seconds and while board is still cooling down and still warm not too hot, try power it up. it will work however as board cools FCBGA will loose connection again. Only fix is to replace GPU.
My one hasn’t broke yet
Same
That was far too much thermal paste
he's an idiot, rrod is caused by gpu failure
@@bethfoster6208 caused by solder failure on the gpu you're right
@@jammydodger1449 wrong, it's the substrate losing connection to the chip itself its not the solder at all, this has been proven many times
@@bethfoster6208 thanks for the further info mate, what's the substrate youre referring to?
@@jammydodger1449 the connection to the die and the actual chip itself, on GPU_Y1/GPU_57/GPU_Y2/GPU_RHEA
Just traded an xbox 360 for a pack of yugioh card
Going to ask is it wrong to get rid of X clamps and go but and bolt route?
it is wrong, might damage the board even further
will damage board and gpu further. find a professional to reflow new gpu on proper using BGA reballing station.
No it's much better and after all the Xclamp aren't reusable at all. I made my own x-clamp fix with a few screws and (bumpers ???).
After all it's much better than the original Xclamps however don't over tight it
Hmm You should've have removed the plastics around the chips and put flux.
18:24 That's way too much paste.
it's proved it doesn't matter.
@@tirijalito Wrong, it will insulate the chip if it’s caked on.

Tiny compared to ps3s heat sink
Yeah, I have approximately 0% chance of success being able to do list. I will just sell the console on eBay with a link to this video. And buy a new one. Lol
Waste of time. Reflow and replaste is only a temporary fix for a faulty gpu. And not all phat 360s will red ring, late falcons are decent, jasper v1s are great, and v2...... will never red ring
