Reacting to LTT's Linux distro video. (disappointed)

- Look, I get that the point of the Linus' video was to be like "omgz look at how weird Linux is." It was supposed to be fun and whatever. But the tone it came off seeming like a regular LTT video. The vast majority of the distros they highlighted were practically antiques. And that means that most of the non-Linux users watching his video will get the impression that this is the current state of Linux. Which it isn't.
Of the 10 distros they featured, only two of them were real, useful distros. The rest were, frankly, so old or so memed (or both) that they weren't worth highlighting in a video of this tone. (One of them wasn't even a distro)
The worst offender on this list was Vinux, a (very old and extremely outdated) distro that focused on accessibility for the visually impaired. Frankly, this is the Desktop Environment's job, not the distros. And it was using Ubuntu Unity desktop (and an early version, at that). This was presented without acknowledging the age of the OS, nor when its last release was. They just poked fun at how bad the experience was. But those who don't know better might assume this was "Linux's best attempt" and write Linux devs off as a bunch of amateurs.
I feel like LTT should do better. I know this was meant to be more of an entertaining video, but they missed the mark on so many levels with this video. Clearly, they do not live in the Linux world.

thanks, but the clips were too much already... I tried watching Linus use Lnux, and saw him completely ignoring warnings about what he was about to remove, and then complain about it.
The thing is very easy to understand, if you live of sponsors that sell products that work on top of windoze you MUST hate linux and ridicule it as best you can.
Latest Linux fx actually use cinnamon...and yea this is more a joke video. Real Linux video is when he try to daily drive it and Linux basically self destruct...

Gardiner. Linus did not name Linux after himself, he wanted to call it Freax and that name was used in the makefiles. Linus considered the name Linux but he considered that too egotistical so he did not. Ari Lemmke who worked with Torvalds and volunteered as an administrator for the used FTP-server disliked the name Freax (good thing, if you ask me :)) and he changed it to Linux without Linus his permission, at first. The name stuck and Linus approved. Source: "Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary" written by Linus Torvalds and David Diamond.
And the mascot was almost a fox, instead of a penguin.

I still wonder why people pronounce Linux in a non-intuitive way, rather than the same way as they pronounce "Linus"
@@herrfaust2020 If I take a wild guess, because of the "i" in UNIX, considering that the name Linux is a play on Linus mixed with Unix.
The fact they look at Hannah Montana etc shows their intent with the video. Meant to be light hearted etc. It didn't both me so much, but that said I wish their coverage of linux was better. Anthony seemed to get things on track then it sort of stopped.

Anthony (now Emily) came out as trans and now doesnt want to be on camera anymore. Shes still a writer I assume and she appeared in the april fools video aswell so the influence is still there I assume.

whats with the implication that the distros don't exist because they are old lol. their video was clearly just a bit of fun and at some points it feels like you are taking it infinitely more serious than it is
The video was fairly obviously meant to be looking at old and weird Distros that understandably wouldn’t be maintained (otherwise they wouldn’t be that weird!) pretty much none of them should be used. “Vinux isn’t a thing” but it is? Old, outdated, weird but a thing. I feel like you’ve reviewed this video under the pre-tense that it wasn’t meant to educate and explain Linux to us. It wasn’t, it was just to point out some of the weird and silly stuff they found about it. The fact that some of them you didn’t know shows that the video did successfully convey lesser known information.
I thought the video was good. A good bit of fun. Which is exactly my expectation from an LTT video. I don't even have a problem with the distros being old, except vinux, but there more than worry any of the other distros, their heart was in the right place...
And they DID ask for people to comment on the state of accessibility software in Linux nowadays. I don't expect them to actually do anything with that information, but who knows? It might actually end up being part of a video in the future.

At the end of the day information needs to be factual and relevant.
@@ErichToven and at the end of the day, entertainment needs to be fun. Also, no information was incorrect and it was all definitely relevant to the main topic: weird and interesting distros.
If a distro can still be downloaded and installed it still exists. Ubuntu 9.x didn't cease to exist after support ended and nether did Windows XP when it's support ended. In the same vein if a distro hasn't been updated in ages but can still be downloaded and installed, it may be abandoned, but it still exists
Doesn't mean you should use it. If you can make your own security patches, sure. Or if you plan to use it completely offline (which is a valid use-case)

Its dead to anyone with half a working mind in practical terms it does not exist. The issue comes into play when you take the prase much more litterly then intended.

I think you misunderstood the intent of the video, they make no guarantees that any of these are distros you should actually use, just that they found them to be interesting. What annoyed me was when he said stuff like "this is the most Linux thing ever" referring the the crappy screen reader, or "you could use this if you really wanted to, but you wouldn't want to unless you have really old hardware" and then proceeds to say that that's true of most Linux distro, which was kinda wtf moment, and I'm surprised you didn't mention it.
Manjaro is hated for DDoSing the AUR, their firefox package needing to be taken down due to not being firefox, manjaro forgetting to renew their certificates, mixing brand new packages and 2 week old packages, etc. Though of the list DDoSing the AUR is the worst out of the bunch. Manjaro is just kinda a buggy mess, even when compared with arch, arch will beat out manjaro a lot of the time in stablity due to not doing stupid stuff. If you want arch but easier to install endevorOS is the better option.
Manjaro was my first long-haul distro when I fully switch my main rig (no windows dual boot) to linux. defended them for years, I don't remember what exactly was the straw that broke the camel's back, but eventually got tired of making up excuses for their continued incompetence, and the amount of work to fix their stupid mistakes (for a long time I thought the AUR just wouldn't work 60% of the time and that was just how the AUR was, didn't realize it was because of the stupid way Manjaro implemented the AUR.)
Eventually started distro hopping again and have been at Nobara Linux the past several-ish years happily.
@@swizzler Yeah, I use nobara on a shared rig as it's a bit less temperamental than arch, good distro, but arch on personal devices for me with how good the AUR is.
Exactly. Heck, even Garuda Linux is better as I'm pretty sure they use the stock Arch repos but add the Chaotic AUR repo as well (the Chaotic AUR being a pre-compiled set of AUR packages). And they do heavily customize the experience but it's not as bad as Manjaro.
And I agree, EndeavourOS is great, as it really is Arch but made for actual users. They also use the stock Arch repos but add their own repo of several utilities, two of which are AUR helpers which can be a pain to install without that repo, and they even have the propietary Nvidia drivers pre-loaded as a boot option on their ISO, at least until NVK and Nouveau become stable on GTX 16 series & RTX GPUs. And they moved to KDE Plasma as the default DE (nothing against Xfce, but given KDE Plasma has a lot more backing, they naturally have more advancements like actual working Wayland support and not needing as much customization as Xfce needed when it was the default), which will be good for users like me, who were former Windows users who had had enough with Microsoft's BS. The only issues I had with EndeavourOS was the 2022 GRUB EFI boot issue, but Arch also had that issue and EndeavourOS actually was the first to post on how to fix it (before even Arch themselves posted how).
I literally don't install Arch using the Arch ISO unless I don't want a DE or I want to install a tiling window manager or tiling Wayland compsitor not supported by EndeavourOS installed (they only officially support i3). And given that I'm more of a floating window type of user, I think EndeavourOS is one of my favorite distros.
Yes, fully agreed. Another reason why I as someone who used to use it dislike it is because it's not quite Arch so the Arch Wiki isn't always applicable and also because they preinstall snap and flatpak and for some reason uninstalling snap broke KDE for me. I don't want Flatpak or Snap and installing Endeavour or stock Arch just is like that by default.
@@cameronbosch1213I've installed "pure" Arch probably a dozen times and outside of headless systems, I don't find any reason to spend the time installing Arch by hand. I believe Manjaro was my first arch-based distro, which I used for about 2 years before getting fed up with the AUR issues and switching over to the Anarchy install scripts (which are now abandoned), which is what I used for 6-7 years. I'm currently using both Garuda (my desktop) and Endeavor (my laptop). Previously I had been using the old Anarchy install scripts (which are abandoned now).
I'll eventually move my desktop over to Endeavor, though I will say a nice thing about Garuda is that it defaults to btrfs + timeshift out of the box - and that's already saved me some time a few weeks ago when my system wouldn't boot after an update. I don't know what the actual issue had been, but I rolled back, waited a day and then updated again with no issues. It's easy enough to set up timeshift on Endeavor, but if you didn't install Endeavor on a btrfs filesystem from the start you will be limited to using the rsync functionality of timeshift instead of btrfs snapshots - which takes more time for both taking and restoring snapshots.
On Edubuntu it was one of the first official Ubuntu spins, it is customised for learning but there is some other stuff that it was designed to do. One feature that it really focused quite a bit on was the idea of using an LTSP thin client so it could be run on very modest hardware per desk with kind of a fancy netboot. The rationale is that the kids would have restricted profiles out of the box and run on older equipment so it could be used in schools in third world countries. It has never been a runaway success in terms of usage but it definitely had some good reason for being a thing.
Also, it has made a return very recently as a spin of Ubuntu again. 24.04 will be the first offical LTS version of Eubuntu in how long now?
@@cameronbosch1213 Well originally I'm fairly sure it was entirely funded by Mark out of pocket because he saw that as a worthy thing. When it was handed over to the community it kind of died because there weren't enough volunteers.
@@ShaneFagan That would make sense. Sadly, we need more businesses and education using FOSS. Heck, every user using LibreOffice or OnlyOffice, two excellent FOSS office suites, even on Windows, that isn't using Microsoft Office, is another user not trapped by Microsoft!
RedStar OS is kinda interesting to be to some degree, newer versions actually exist we just don't have access to them. However, we can tell they exist because the few public facing sites report as a newer version. I think how we got the last one is someone somehow smuggled a copy out of the country lol, I am curious if we will ever see newer versions make it out just to see how spooky they are and just because it's just interesting
I personally like that Linus is giving Linux more exposure, and i know he doesn't have malicious intent, but i really do wish he would do another serious and actually informative video on Linux, there have been talks of switching to Linux again, so im actually kinda excited for that at least
I like it as well, I agree he has good intentions but as I replied in another comment. When you have a channel that is your name and tech tips they need to be factual and relevant or you have failed in 2 thirds of your channels description.
Linus is a tim the tool man that surrounds himself in far to many all Borland's. It's basically a supporting case of all holding up one tim.
IMVHO LMG is giving... LMG exposure. "Mocking" uncommon distros that might be available only because of the openness of Linux.
However: more exposure and informative should be about the biggest gamechanger for linux spreading during last years: Steamdeck.
@@GsrItalia they did lots of coverage of the steam deck, and mention Linux in a pretty positive light every other wan show, and I don't think they mocked anything, most of the distros they reviewed were ment to be laughed at, uwuntu was never ment to replace Ubuntu, it's a joke distro, and they treated it like it is, a joke
@@ErichToven I don't see what was non factual about the video, it was mostly for laughs, and just because you don't personally like his content doesn't automatically mean that 10 million people are yes men, if you knew anything at all about Linus, you'd at least know he goes pretty far to make factual content when his content is informative, but the distro video was not meant to be informative, it was just looking at weird joke distros, no one was recommending anyone to go use them, though I would definitely have liked to see a video about choosing an actual functional distro before a video about messing around with joke distros
Unity is still a thing and maintained and there is an official Unity Flavor for Ubuntu. But the one in the video is definitely likely outdated. It was interesting seeing Linus go over the different distros though
That's what I was gonna say. I mean, sure, official unity no longer exists, but it is now an official flavor.

Maintained is a stretch. The last commit was a year ago, and there have only been 17 commits in the 3 years since the repo started.
@@linuxsbc Not really, the person that runs it now is Rudra Saraswat and you can find his version of Ubuntu as an official flavor which is just called Ubuntu Unity and they maintain the Unity desktop and working on updating it to be ran with wayland as well
@@BrianHarkness Do you have any evidence that they are actually working on it? I can't find any signs of changes anytime recently. Other than that, what you said is true-Rudra Saraswat runs it, and it's an official flavor, but that doesn't mean it's maintained.

I found the video entertaining. Yeah... The distros were old, but he pretty much stated that for most of them. And of course they had to include the Justin Biber thing... They are Canadian...
Was it a good round up of all the current Linux distros and there advantages and disadvantages? No! Did it try to be that? No!
Should Emily Y. have been the Co-Host? Definitely! But she made it clear, that she will not be hosting videos in the nearer future and that is fine.
I don't think there is a need for some form of LTT Linux. What would their angle be? Gaming Linux? We are all waiting for SteamOS anyway... The only thing I can think of, that they might be good at is making a distro for video production. That is their line of expertise. Thing is... Linus made it very clear, that they are using Adobe and he will not switch to the open source side of video production for various reasons (and all boil down to "it is still cheaper to pay Adobe, than to switch to something else"). Go watch that video. It is interesting. So yeah... No LTT-Linux.
Having to figure out where the hell your files are on Linux is so much harder than on Windows because on Windows you know which one is your SD card and which one is your thumb drive and which one is your internal drive Because they're literally labeled with the letters and capacity size.
Every time I have to find the absolute path to my SD card on my Steam Deck I end up having to open up the file explorer and look for it there to see what the path is very annoying.
I’m legally blind, work in IT and have never really been able to use Linux fully because of the screen magnifier software always being kind of half broken or randomly jumping around. I’d never heard of Vinux but I’m glad somebody made an attempt.
In my experience GNOME does the jumping around thing you're talking about, but my experience with KDE's magnifier has been much better. It gets a little weird with multiple monitors, but it's certainly usable...
I'm not blind, though. Orca, the screenreader, works on GNOME and KDE but probably works better on GNOME. And probably better on X11 right now, but GNOME is working on improving accessibility with the $1M dollars in funding they got this year. Hopefully it pans out.
There shouldn't be a need for an accessibility-oriented distribution; distributions should just be accessible by default. And they kind of are! But there are a lot of holes, I hear. Brodie Robertson did a podcast with a partially blind Linux user if you're curious what their experience with Linux was.

I know everyone says the year of linux is every year, or never, or whichever year it currently is, but the day linus switches full time to linux will be one hell of a year for linux, even if it isn't the year of linux.
In fairness to the video, they didn't claim they were new distros.
nor did they say anyone should actually use them.
The point of the ltt video was cleary entertainment, "haha look at this silly hannah montana themed distro".

@@_WEK_ Linus' linux videos demonstrate that he really doesn't have any interest in learning linux. And his criticism videos focus on how hard it is to get past beginner mistakes (mistakes that even beginner windows users would make) rather than actually teach people how to navigate it.
In other words he treats linux like a novelty rather than a legitimate option for personal use. And that's kind of frustrating to deal with. Especially when you're watching people who are dirt poor shell out $200 for an operating system just so they can watch youtube and play minecraft.

Here I why I dislike Manjaro:
They ripped out HVEC support in Mesa for no good reason (if there was a good reason why have so few other distros followed suit?), and their answer was: "Just run this repo that requires to you switch to the unstable branch, AMD peasant"
Manjaro was ok a couple of years ago, but they appear actively hostile to Radeon users today.

Also fails to understand why the "Year of the Linux Desktop" is a perpetually never happening event.
I can tell ya why ppl don't like manjaro and arch. when you do an update then reboot it'll reboot to black. Every time i have used either distro i think "man, this is awesome and feels so snappy" within a month it'll reboot to blackness. ya go to the forums to get help and ppl say RTFM and things like that. when really the wrong video stuff gets updated and shouldn't have been.
I noticed such problems too. I have a vm server and i have plenty of distros running just for testing. I do not install cracy software on them or doing something strange, my manjaro vms often break just by updating too.
Manjaro is way worse about this, the thing about these distros is you need to actively use them and update them frequently. Manjaro is way worse about this than arch though with how they package their stuff.
I ran Manjaro KDE a long time to learn Linux and stick with it... it ran like a year 100% perfect, never had a single issue like that. When I later ran Arch, it did break my machine a few times, and I found it annoying. I'm happier in the Fedora world today.
The funny thing is that I've had more problems with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu Studio than any other distro. Arch just worked for me apart from the 2022 GRUB_EFI issue, whereas I've had constant issues with every 17.10 and later Ubuntu version including 22.04. The problem is now Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio are now using an extremely out of date and unsupported version of Plasma for an LTS; they really should have delayed those releases to put Plasma 6 on them.
Very similar experiences for me. Though that was right after a boight a 5700XT GPU at launch. Support for LTS distros sucked and the bleeding edge distros had the issue described.
I wound up back in windows for a few months. I swapped to NVidia and back to AMD GPU since.
Been full time Linux on my personal desktop for a few years now. Pop 22.04 currently. Had to replace my ram and bumped to a larger drive last weekend.
I'll stick to long term release distros. Tired of getting cut on the edge.
The video was made as a joke, however with how much traffic Linus gets I'm sure there will be people unfamiliar with Linux that could get scared off by it. Never had luck with Manjaro myself honestly, regardless of how careful I am Manjaro just ends up breaking after about a month of usage for me - programs will just stop working, desktop icons will start giving errors saying they are harmful. I've tried Manjaro 3 different times and ended up going back to windows due to the OS just failing after a month or two.
I am trying Zorin OS right now, it's been about two weeks, but I am having a good experience and not encountered any issues yet.
Yeah, Manjaro isn't known to be a stable distro, due to the unstable merges, and the 2 week old packages being mixed with brand new packages. Manjaro doesn't really do anything to make the system more stable than arch, but they definatly do things to make it less stable. Manjaro is more of a GUI install for arch that breaks a lot. if you want a GUI installer for arch, use endevorOS
Yeah, Manjaro is a bit like that. When you download the ISO, burn to USB, don't re-format that USB. Reasonable chance you're going to need it.
I'm not about to knock Arch or Arch based distros, but I do run them in VirtualBoxes. My daily-driver is Mint + Mate, and I have had to reinstall that once or twice too. The main problem has been cases of user_stupidity (me) and the nVidia driver (nVidia's fault.)
Going back, to when I used Windows as a daily, have I had to do an emergency re-install on that? Oh yeah! And I have had the mother of all security fkcu-ups, which I must confess, wasn't exactly M$'s fault, it was mine, but that particular mistake couldn't have happened in Linux. Bad people don't export malicious active-X controls in Linux, because it doesn't have those.

Manjaro
The thing with opinions is, sometimes there are also good reasons why people dislike specific distros (or the management of it). Without listening to those reasons, its useless, I agree. The problem is, that many people don't explain themselves or some even hate it for bad reasons (let's just call it this way). And therefore those who have legitimate reasons are put into the same soup and you don't care anymore.
I personally had my own reasons why leaving Manjaro. Mind you, I don't switch so easily. Manjaro was the first distro to hop into after using 12 years of Ubuntu. Now I'm on Endeavour OS. Just wanted mention that people have good reasons, you just need to explore them if you want understand. CZcams comments is the wrong place for this...

I used to work at Amazon - all of the fulfillment centers used tinycore as the base for their kiosks. It's a lightweight OS that can be booted from PXE at scale with little overhead.
Whats wrong with the steam flatpak? It's one of the only formats recognized by Valve.
Flatpak is not supported by Valve.
To add, even the steam deck comes with native package installed as opposed to a containerized one
Technically, Valve only officially supports Steam on Ubuntu, which makes me giggle ever since the Steam Deck released and they never updated that line to reflect that on their website

This video would pit the top 10 “gaming” distros against each other; all tests should be done by two people, one advanced user and one complete noob. Grading should be done on the following categories:
Installation and setup of distro
OOBE
Installation of games
Performance
Ease of use
Ease of customization

So, why I think this video collab makes sense, Linus seems to be interested in following along the Linux for gaming saga, but clearly has had mostly negative experiences with Linux, so his audience also sees that same side of the story. But we know that Linux can be great and can be stable, and we know that if Linux had a video showing some of the user-friendly and well-thought-out distros specific to this use case, his massive audience would pay attention. I believe this collab, if it could work out, could have a major and significant impact on the Linux market share.
That would be an interesting video, but I don't know how useful it would actually be. See, I've seen people who had hardware issues with no bearer, but no issues with bazzite. Both are fedora-based and using relatively recent kernels, so what gives? And some of the major gaming distros won't even work on Nvidia cards, like Chimera OS.

Is the goal to show the "complete noobs" that they can in fact confidently switch to Linux and still game (since that's all people apparently do on their PCs 😂 ; admittedly, gaming *is* the only _variable_ thing people do on their PCs; all the "normal" things like web surfing, streaming and document creation already work without issue)? Or is the idea to show the "complete noobs" on which distro they can confidently switch-and-game, avoiding a high learning curve or whatever?
It's a great idea, but everybody would need to check their assumptions about goals at the door, or it could be quite a disaster.

@@hollisbostick2872I don't know what the real mission statement is, but it's pretty clear they just want to make entertaining kick videos with a side of Gamer's Nexus style testing and the background with its own separate website. When the Steam Deck came out, that was really peak Linux gaming right there. And so they covered it.
My first Linux experience was installing Ubuntu 12.04 on my old laptop back in 2012. (12 years ago) and I was impressed how responsive it was and how little setup I needed to do to get everything I needed.
And today I revived the laptop and put kde neon 22.04 on it. Still works and still runs decently.

Question: There is only one thing keeping me from moving to Linux. I'm a writer and my main writing software is Scrivener. Does Scrivener work on Linux as well as it does on Windows?

I thought it was kind of funny. I was a little surprised because I thought they would cover some very niche modern distros, But when they pivoted quickly to the goofy stuff, it was easy enough to take it in stride and laugh.
i use steam from my ubuntu store app so yea it runs in a container but i have no issues at all.

I personally use mainly Fedora and Linux Mint. Course not as much Mint for a little bit. And Raspbian for PI's. My main machine is Fedora and other than a small issue I am trying to work out as to why my SC2 and WoW won't work with Lutris or regular WINE when I didn't have an issue in the past, the majority of my games work. (Course I use Steam as well) And I am constantly working on stories, writing RPG game stuff for a group, running my landscaping business of it, watching movies, and streaming so ...

I tried manjaro, but it just didn't work for me. I switched to endeavorOS and have had less issues overall.

I do like how Linux makes it clear to which drive a partition belongs to, but they could do something like "C1:" for that. Easy and simple.
Aside, some vps services were still kernel 2.6 until a couple of years ago.
After years of slowly gathering linux compatible parts, I finally made the epic jump to linux norabra. I took a very patient approach, knowing I would have to relearn just about everything. I had a really nice time. Unfortunately, a week in I found out the hard way that screen sharing on discord is broken. In my use case, it was very painful but I couldn't find a realistic work around and this was a dealbreaker and I had to regrettably go back to windows. Now I'm home fighting with all the Microsoft bullsh*t, but at least my software works. Side note trying to configure the mouse's middle click to function just like in windows was impossible for me. I use the fast scroll thing a lot.

The user interface of linux can be the same as windows regardless of the functionality underneath. It's juts a matter of translating function calls. But when it comes to hardware and how it's utilized, that's a different story. Especially when it comes to data recovery. Before anyone starts trying to use any linux distro with an existing storage device that contains sensitive data, you had better understand the differences in file systems, backup procedures, and recovery procedures for those file systems. Hint : you can't use chkdsk on linux to recover ntfs drives created on windows and corrupted on linux. Just a heads up for the newbs.

From what I understand, the hate for it comes mainly from the people who maintain it. The way it works with the AUR gives it a tendency to DOS the aur servers if you're not careful, and also they have a bad reputation for failing to maintain their SSL certificates on their own websites. Those are the main ones I can remember at least.
I assumed the video was going to be on industrial/embedded or specialised options, makes sense it's all 'fun' OS's.
Real-time operating system are something id like to see a video on, less odd but interesting and used everywhere.
PS I know nothing about Linux or most OSs.

This video and guy are the peak definition of "Linux Users are the vegas of the PC community". This whole video and vibe of it as described by several other people in the comments, and this comment is coming from someone who uses several Linux distros all the time.
I actually started using Linux because of their 30 day challenge and my 30 day challenge became a forever thing when I fell in love with open source in general. I also realized that Linus Sebastian is just kind of inept at some things when it comes to technology and of course drinks the corporate Kool aid.

These types of videos you make are good for showing a counterpoint and informing. Congratulations for this! But with these videos they pierce the bubble of those who already know GNU Linux and FOSS, and reaches a more public, including those who don't know about GNU Linux and FOSS.
He is constantly learning more about GNU Linux, and with the amount of people who follow he, he is undoubtedly an important communication channel outside the bubble that is already directly involved with FOSS.

As an arch user, I don't hate Manjaro and I've used it for a few things myself. I have been annoyed the couple of times Manjaro has broken the aur though, and I think it's laughably unprofessional how often their website SSL certificates are messed up
Bit harsh on them given that most of the video was supposed to be a bit funny. As for "Windowfying" a linux install, I do it all the time - not with the look so much, but all the hotkeys. I swap daily between Linux for home and Windows for work and don't want to remember multiple sets of hotkeys. My personal setup is Debian + IceWM with Windows-like hotkeys and functionality. As for TinyCore - it's amazing, but has a bit of a learning curve. I've installed it a few times on a Pi and low spec PC's. Very impressive. It was a derivitive of the old Dam Small Linux (which has just had new release over the pas month after 12 years). Worth a look into.

Not using a rolling distro but for me installing the Steam flatpack version actually improved compatibility and maybe even performance over the native one.

I'm using Chimera os now, to replace the abandoned Holoiso I used to use and liked a lot. What really sucks is that I really wanted to have Steam os on my desktop pc. If Steam had made the Steam os available like they promised, that's the one I'd be using, and the only reason I was using Holoiso and now Chimera is because it's the closest to the Steam os I could find
For me, once I used the Deck os, now it's hard to use anything else, and I really liked PopOS!, Mint, Manjaro, and a few others I used before

14:31 - Interesting. For myself, I hand create a 'container' (more or less) for Steam to run in because I know how to do that. And it uses an alternate home directory that's an overlay filesystem over my real home directory. This is because I don't trust Steam apps to not scribble in my home directory in ways I think are unacceptable.
For a friend who is not someone who would be capable of running his own ersatz 'container' environment before starting Steam every time he ran it, I recommended the Flatpak for similar reasons. I didn't realize there were performance and/or compatibility issues associated with it.
I have an old PC (i7 from 2011 with an gtx 1070 from 2016) and I tried out the flatpak Version from steam. At first it looked good. But after a while I realized that I had Performance issues playing cs2...not particular in the game, but rather outside...when I tried to watch a Video on a Website or even a gif (*.webm) I experienced microstutter as well as sound stutter. This even did not stop after I quit the steam game.
It took me quite a while to figure out that the flatpak version of steam in combination with linux mint and my gtx 1070 was the issue.
I reinstalled steam from system packages (sudo apt install steam) and all issues are gone.
I can highly agree with Bryant --> do not use the flatpak version of steam atm.

Don't worry, there is no need to understand that Container stuff. You would have the same container knowledge gab on windows or mac. He describes advanced high level security stuff you will probably never have contact with.
To start with linux I can recommend to use a separate hard-drive or ssd. Leave your windows hard-drive(s) where they are, but disconnect them from the motherboard.
Boot from USB with a distro of our choice, for example I recommend linux mint to start with. Install linux on that separate ssd and try it out. Install steam, and software you like. get familiar for a week or two.
I'm giving linux lessons & workshops in my free time and from my personal exp, all people who start with only linux on der pc, stayed on linux.
The people who tried to use linux and windows at the same time on their pc, ran into dual boot problems, unknowingly blamed linux for it and switched back to windows.
What I try to say: Do not overcomplicated things. Everything your brains learns something new it is hard at the beginning and easy after a while.
For example for me it would be quite hard now to switch back to another OS which is not Linux based.

I've been programming computers since I was 8 years old in 1979. If I were a Windows person, there would be other things that I would be yammering on about that would be just as confusing, but because you'd also been using Windows for a long time you would feel completely comfortable in ignoring it.
For example, I could tell you stories about exactly how ugly and hairy the Windows DLL system is that would have you wondering if I used the same OS as the thing you comfortably turned on and trusted to work every day.

Windows is the same, you install a game and then a shitload of folders (from the game) get installed in your documents folder.
You can install it and a shiload of folders will be created in your "home" in Linux.
I you can't or don't know how to do this In windows you have no place bitxhing about this in Linux.
IDK, I use the flatpack version of Steam with the steam-devices debian package and it runs just fine on MX Linux. I mean, at least its not the snap version lmao
I really wish that LTT would fully embrace Linux and promote it more on their channel. For that matter, I wish Linus would learn more about the system and how to actually use it, especially if he used a distro that wasn't Debian based. It seems almost antithetical that a guy named Linus doesn't use Linux.

Yes flatpak is a fix for most of this software tho not all systems like drawing tablets drivers packages, an software can be installed by flatpaks. most maintainers is good actors tho it takes that one bad actor of maintainers to inject their own malware into the package to infect your system

I feel you miss the point, i dont feel the tone came off as a regular LTT video and i dont think anyone with half a braincell took the video seriously, its a lighthearted video reviewing weird and funny distro´s they even state it textually and the idea is repeated along the video, no hate intended.
I think Linux will be more interesting when any given distro just works out of the box. In my experience, there's always some obscure dependency that needs to be installed. As a student, I don't have time for that. As a future software engineer, I don't want to be spending my time debugging user software (like an IDE) or OS issues when all I want to do is be productive. Having said that, Linux is a fun toy to play with as you learn how to code and how operating systems work.
I remember the first Linus video about Linux. I had just installed it on my brother's laptop and he (being a 13 y.o. boy) wasn't as bad managing the computer as Linus, that's claims to actually know about computers and technology...

I think it was a good video. They were pretty positive about Linux overall (unless you're insecure about it) and they were just showing weird distros. They didn't say they had to be useful or current. It's just a bit of fun.
Unity was pretty cool tbh, though in general i find Linux folks spend too much time making competing redundant versions of the same programs and not enough nailing down one that just works perfectly, so i'm more in favor of Canonical assigning it's developers to help out Gnome than making their own redundant Desktop Environment. But Unity was nice.

I agree that an LTT video about any Linux topic brings attention to the community. I only wish that it was (slightly better) informed, fair(er), or less-meant-to-ridicule attention, instead of what it is (tending towards mean-spirited and dismissive).
Linux has actually accomplished/achieved a lot over the years. Witness the Steam deck, which is the culmination of quite a large number of (sub-)projects that created a cohesive product that works for all the non-Linux users who own one. Riffing on joke distros and prank packages as if that's what we do is just... not the attention I need or want from a big name like LTT.
If they talked about us more, and then occasionally threw in a joke like this, that would be fine. But that's not the way with ol' "Mean Girl" LTT.

I can't speak for everyone but I can speak for me, I usually use Gnome, but for Manjaro, it always ends up breaking for me. And I know, people say "It's Arch, what did you expect?" but at this point in time, I feel like Manjaro really isn't Arch anymore, it's it's own thing, and for me, it doesn't work as well as EndeavourOS or Nobara for me.

Not really so much an OMGWTFBBQ GO BACK moment but Ubuntu v18.04.1-server is the most recent in the list and I think it has something to do with the fact that this is the prime era of virtualization technology. So of course I'm going to have a fallback like that. Just a little weird that I'd be looking for it as recent as this year.

Manjaro on its own is great, now if you decide to enable the AUR on it... well you're the captain of your ship, just watch out for icebergs and remember there's a reason its the AUR and not the MUR.

bazzite is my linux of choice. I preload into gamescope and the go to desktop to do work. glad its pretty seamless with amd gpus.
I think the main hatred for Manjaro comes from the attitude the maintainers of the distro have demonstrated at times toward the community, especially when they majorly borked something up a little over a year ago, and just blew it off. That is not a good thing to do to Linux users.
On LTT Linux every button is a cancel button.
Actually Unity is a thing again now, someone took it over and now there is an officially recognised spin Ubuntu Unity, they have the same features Unity had when it was retired like the HUD too.
Most likely the point of these kind of videos is for FUD, to steer Windows users who are considering Linux because of the latest Microsoft b.s. in relation to Windows 11, away from moving to Linux.
